Sakura woke when she felt the carriage stop. She glanced up at Maiko who shrugged. She sat up and turned to Kakashi. He shook his head, so Sakura leaned out the window. There, in the street, were two men.
Kakashi moved toward the door, but Sakura stopped him. "I've got your only shirt. I'll handle this." When Maiko's eyes widened, Kakashi smiled.
"Just watch," he said, then twisted around so he could do so himself.
Sakura walked around the carriage, rolling Kakashi's sleeves up as she went. "Hello. What's going on here?" She glanced up at the driver.
He swallowed and pointed to the two men in the street. "Um, they're demanding we give them the valuables."
"Oh. Really?" She asked and he nodded, then shrank back into the seat. "Don't worry," she said and smiled, then turned to the other two men.
If they had ever been ninja, it didn't show. One was tall and skinny and looked more nervous than anything. The other was shorter than his partner and heavier, but it wasn't all fat. They held crude clubs of some sort but that was the only weaponry she could see. She slowly walked up to the two men. "Listen, lady, you don't have to get hurt. Just give us the stuff and we'll leave you on your way."
"No."
He raised an eyebrow at her. "No? What do you mean no?"
"No. I'm not going to give you 'the stuff' as you put it." Sakura smiled. "But I will give you exactly ten seconds to get lost or you'll regret it."
The shorter man laughed. "Are you kidding? You, little girl?"
Sakura shook her head and tsked. "Four…three… two… one…" She reached up, curled her middle finger into her thumb and held it up at the shorter man's forehead. "Time's up." And she flicked him in the forehead, then watched with satisfaction as he flew backwards a good ten meters, leaving a deep rut in the ground.
She looked to the side at the first man's partner. "Well?" She asked him and he turned and took off at top speed into the woods. She wiped her hands together and glanced up at the driver. "I'm sorry for the rut. Do you think you can work around it?"
He was staring at her, slack-jawed, blinking. "Sir?" She asked.
He shook his head to clear it. "Um, yes, ma'am." He nodded several times and Sakura went around to climb back into the coach.
Kakashi opened the door for her. "When did you learn that trick?"
She grinned, "Tsunade taught it to me a while ago. I've just never had the opportunity to use it until now. We don't usually fight non-ninja."
"Good point." He chuckled. "Very nice."
"Thank you." She settled into her seat and noticed Maiko gaping.
"Wow. Um…remind me not to make her mad." She said to Kakashi.
"I remind myself of that all the time." He said and they all laughed.
Just over three hours later, they were forced to call a halt for the night. Sakura and Kakashi, used to sleeping outdoors, helped Maiko rearrange her things again so that she could at least sleep on the seat. They found a spot that was relatively dry under the trees and set out their mats. Kakashi put a fire together and they huddled around it to warm up. Sakura made a quick soup, which she knew was horrible, but they gladly ate anyway, along with what rice balls they had left from the inn. With some hot tea, it at least gave them something.
"We'll need to take watches." Kakashi said as they were finishing up their tea. "Can you take a shift?" He asked the driver, who nodded. "We don't expect you to do anything, just wake us, if necessary,"
"I can take first watch. I'm not that tired yet."
Kakashi nodded. "Thanks. I'll take second watch. Sakura, you can cover us last." She nodded at that. "That said, I think you and I should try to get some sleep."
Sakura wasn't going to argue. She'd given Kakashi his shirt back when hers was dry, but it was still a bit cold. She wished she had him to curl up to. She shoved the thought aside and curled up under her blanket. The nap had helped, but not enough. The lack of sleep the night before coupled with the day she'd had wet and fighting mud, was enough to knock her out pretty quickly.
She woke to Kakashi squatting over her. "Hey. How'd you sleep?"
"Like a baby. I was too exhausted for anything else." She said, hoping he would get what she was saying. She'd missed him, missed having him against her, but she was so tired, her body took over for her mind for once. She sat up slowly, but when Kakashi didn't move, they found themselves just a breath apart. Sakura swallowed, then leaned up, pulled his mask down and kissed him.
Kakashi returned the kiss, trying to show her how much he'd missed her. When they broke apart a moment later, he sighed. "I did the same thing. But I think I need a bit more. You'll be okay?"
She just raised an eyebrow at him. "Okay, okay, right. Sorry." He said, abashed and rolled himself up into his own blanket.
Sakura stood and stretched. It had been way too long since she'd camped. She needed to get back into it. She grabbed the pot and filled it with water, then set it over the fire. She stepped out of the circle of the campsite and scanned the immediate area. When she was satisfied that there was no threat, she sat back down and waited for the tea.
Kakashi knew that they were still at least a full day from the next crossroads, so it was going to either be a very long day or they would be forced to take one more night. The roads hadn't dried much overnight, so that in some spots, it was still very difficult to get the carriage through. So when they rounded a curve in the road to find an inn after nearly six hours of fighting with the mud, they were immensely grateful for the sight.
The inn itself was new. It had only been built in the last year. It had two stories with four rooms to rent upstairs and a nice dining room downstairs. The owner used to have a house on the spot and was often asked for a place to sleep for the night as there hadn't been anything between the road to the Capital City and the other set of crossroads near the Jungle Peninsula to the east.
All four rooms were available, so Maiko took the whole inn. The driver took care of the horses and carriage and then gratefully took himself to his room for the night, happy with the thought of a hot shower and a soft bed. After getting themselves settled into their rooms, there was a rush to the showers, all of them desperately wanting to get clean.
Maiko, Kakashi and Sakura spent the evening in the dining room. The innkeeper's wife made them a nice dinner of rice, fish and soup. They spent the rest of the evening sipping on sake and sharing stories of Naruto's antics and Sai's attempts at making friends. But as the evening wore on, both Kakashi and Sakura found themselves getting tense.
There was nothing at all this evening to keep him from coming to her. The last couple of nights, there had been a good reason for it. She glanced up at him to find him staring at her. There was a question in his eyes and she hoped that she answered it, but when they got up to their rooms and bid Maiko a good night, they paused in the hallway.
Sakura's heart was pounding. She stood facing her door, her hand on the doorknob. She swallowed hard, glanced over her shoulder at him and begged him with her eyes. Then she turned and escaped into her room. She closed the door gently, leaving it, as usual, unlocked.
