The sun felt so warm, she couldn’t remember a day that was so perfect. She lay back in the grass next to Neji, trying what Shikamaru always did…watching the clouds. She held Neji’s hand and she giggled at something silly he said. She rolled over and snuggled up against him, laying her head on his chest and began playing with the button on his shirt.
“I love you.” Neji said, quietly.
Hinata sighed. “I love you, too, Neji.”

Neji watched her sleep while he waited to go under himself. She’d rolled over shortly after she dozed off and now they were laying all tangled up. Her legs were intertwined in his, and she was curled up so that her head was on his chest. He wouldn’t have moved for the world.
“I love you, too, Neji,” she whispered, still asleep.
His sharp intake of breath must have disturbed her, because she snuggled even further into his arms and was still.
Did she? Could she? After everything I’ve done to her? The clan and their traditions, the ‘duty’ that she hates so much. Could she still love me?
He shook himself mentally, denying it, though he wasn’t really sure. Why not? His inner self prodded him.
Why not. Neji snorted to himself. Why not? Because I almost killed her! He shouted inside his head.
Does she look like she’s holding on to that? Has she acted frightened or angry or unforgiving?
No.
Then what?
I don’t deserve it. And…well, there were the liberties I took last night.
His inner self snorted at him. Did you force her?
He sighed. No. I did it for her.
Okay, then. Get over yourself. She obviously loves you. Now find a way to show her how much you love her and how much it’s not about duty or the Clan or any of that other nonsense.
Got any ideas?
But all Neji got was silence. Because he already did have a few. It would take time and patience, and more than a little persistence. But he was feeling very good about life, suddenly.

Genma shook Neji’s shoulder. “Hey, Neji,” he whispered.
Neji opened his eyes and registered first Hinata, and that she hadn’t moved, then Genma’s face hovering over him. “Oh, sorry.”
“No problem, but I need you guys to get up and take the shift. I’m beat.”
“Of course.” Neji looked down at Hinata. Genma seemed to get the hint and went over to his bedroll and stretched out.
Neji brushed his fingertips across her eyebrows, then cheeks, then her ear. “Hinata, koishii,” he whispered to her. She didn’t seem to want to stir. With a half smile, he leaned down a bit and started kissing her face. First her nose, then cheek, then captured her lips.
Hinata stirred a bit and Neji thought he heard her whisper, “Neji” against his lips before kissing him back. It took a Herculean effort to pull back.
“Hinata, we need to take our shift.”
“Oh!” Her eyes flew open. “Oh, Neji. Um, hi…” she blushed pink which made Neji think of the flushed look on her face the night before and he groaned. “N—Neji? Did I do something wrong?”
“No, Hinata.” He closed his eyes and tried to get his body to behave. It was a futile attempt. He hugged her close for another second, kissed her smack on the lips and gently let her go, untangling his legs to get up.
She looked dazed for a moment before pulling herself together. “I’ll, um, make some tea.”
Knowing she needed a minute to pull her thoughts together he said, “I’d like that very much.” He pulled on his sandals, straightened the bedroll, then activated Byakugan to look around. “It looks clear. Hopefully, no one is looking for us yet.”
“That would be nice. I don’t mind saying I’m not looking forward to another fight yet.” She turned to Neji with the cups and water and assembled the things for their tea. “Did you sleep well?” She asked, for something to say.
“Quite well, but then, I haven’t been that comfortable in a long time.” He smiled wickedly at her.
She blushed but smiled back. “Yes, I was…”she cleared her throat, “very comfortable, too.” She rubbed the side of her face and surprised him by saying, “although that button on your shirt is annoying.”
He laughed, delighted. “I’ll have to do something about that next time.”
Her blushed deepened when he said, “next time” and she looked over her shoulder at the others. Ino’s butterfly was sticking out from under the covers. Sai and Genma were snoring loudly, but it was Lee and Tenten that caught her attention.
Apparently, sometime after she’d lain down, they gave up the pretense. Tenten was curled up on her side, her head on Lee’s shoulder. Their bedrolls had obviously been put together like hers and Neji’s had. Lee had his arms firmly around Tenten and they looked so peaceful.
“It’s about time he used his brain. I thought he’d never get it.” Neji sounded exasperated.
“I, um, might have helped them with that.” Neji looked at her curiously. “Well, um, last night when I was getting water for tea, she was telling me how she thought he didn’t even know she was alive.” Hinata chuckled, “until, that is, he ran out of kunai. Anyway, I told her to talk to him, that I didn’t think that was the case. Well, I guess that’s the result.” She smiled over at them.
“You did a good thing for them. They’ve been skirting this for a really long time.” He kicked his sandals off and sat back on top of the bedroll. Hinata handed him a tea cup and settled down next to him, and they sipped their tea in silence for a while.
Neji pulled his pack over and dug through it. A minute later, he pulled out a rolled-up board and Shogi pieces. “Would you like to play? Help pass the time…”
“Oh, that would be great. I’m not great at strategy, so it’s a good game to practice.” She smiled and settled herself on the opposite side of the board.
“I never thought of it as a way to learn strategy, just one for using it. You’re right, though. I’d bet that’s where half of Shikamaru’s talent for strategy comes from.” He smiled at her, separated the pieces and they began.
She really was pretty bad at it, but if Hinata was one thing, she was a quick learner, and Neji was a patient teacher. She was sure he could have slaughtered her in a few moves, but he gave her the opportunity to learn some of the more strategic moves and after a couple of games, she started to do fairly well. They laughed and talked of their teammates and played several games.
She yawned into her hand and tried to concentrate but her vision was getting fuzzy. Neji look up at her and smiled. “I don’t need a watch to know that it’s time to switch shifts.” He chuckled.
She scowled at him. “Why aren’t you tired?”
“I just rest well when there’s a beautiful woman in my arms.” He watched in fascination as Hinata’s face went from bright red to puzzled to pale. He suspected the last was because she was wondering how many beautiful women he’d slept with.
Hinata tried not to dwell on the idea of Neji sleeping with beautiful women. Before she could think on it too long, however, Neji leaned over and whispered in her ear, “it’s only happened once, though.”
She looked up at him and blushed again. She was going to end up passing out at this rate. He’d meant her. She was the only one he’d slept with. Well, slept being the operative term. She was sure she’d seen him date before…hadn’t she?
She was so lost in her thoughts, she hadn’t noticed him wake Lee and Tenten. When he came back, she was still sitting in the same spot with the same puzzled look on her face. It was the first time she’d ever considered his…experience. Had he had…she gulped…experiences…with other women? She had obviously not been with anyone. She’d been too busy training and working toward her goals to think about that stuff.
And last night, when he’d… she blushed even redder when she thought about it. When he’d done…that to her, he seemed to know what he was doing. She tried to force her thoughts somewhere else, but they just wouldn’t go.
He touched her shoulder and she jumped. “Oh, sorry, Neji.” She picked up the Shogi pieces quickly and shoved them in the bags, rolled up the board and handed it to Neji. He put them back in his pack, took off his sandals and lay down.
When she didn’t move, he looked at her questioningly. “Hinata-sama?”
She shook her head and curled up against him, not even bothering to attempt to lie apart. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her on her forehead. “What’s wrong?” He asked quietly.
She thought though a myriad of different possibilities on how to broach the subject, but none of them seemed to work. So, she just took a deep breath and mumbled, “haveyoubeenwithawomanbefore?” Her face must have reached new levels of red and she buried it in Neji’s shirt in the hopes he’d let it go.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you. What was that?” He looked genuinely puzzled and a more than a little worried.
She swallowed around the lump in her throat and tried again. She hid her face but said more clearly, “have you been with a woman before? I mean, I’m sure you dated…Oh, never mind!” She cringed inwardly both at what she was asking and at the horrible way it was coming out. She mentally kicked herself.
I have no right to ask him this! He’s not mine. He shouldn’t even be with me!
Why not?! Her inner self sounded affronted.
He’s…he’d just be doing it out of duty.
Girl, when are you going to learn? Tsk. Tsk.
What do you mean?
Uh-uh, you’re going to have to figure this one out on your own.
But you are me!
Hm. Her inner self apparently had enough fun.
“Hinata-sama?” She dared to look up at him and he was smiling at her. He kissed her gently on her forehead and whispered in her ear, “I have not.”
He hasn’t! Her inner self danced with joy. Hinata realized she’d been holding her breath and let it out. She smiled up at Neji and her world seemed a little bit brighter right at that moment. She blushed again, placed a tentative kiss on his jaw, snuggled down into his arms and sighed.

That has to be a good sign. Neji thought to himself. I can’t make anything else out of it. Now, I wish we could get this mission over with. I have so much to do. He closed his eyes and finally fell asleep.
