Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: I’m so sorry the
update is so late in coming. I have been
working diligently on my own works, and my poor unfortunate fan-fics have been left in the dust. I promise to attempt to make sure to get an
update a month out. Right now my
originals are more pressing to me. I
hope you can all understand. Also,
please don’t be afraid of the captcha…I like my
reviews, even if I don’t beg for them.
Review Responses:
Ero Sennin:
I gave myself a pervy giggle when I wrote that
sentence, and I figured Kakashi would have a hard time leaving it alone,
too. Shika is going to confess to Chouji
soon (unless the plan changes).
Mmartini: Thank you so much for
your review. I hope this chapter doesn’t disappoint you.
Sneakyfox: I think I’m blaming my
husband for sexy, nerdy flirting. He’s a
math geek to the core, and some of the lines he comes up with are just…
strange. I hope you like the chapter.
Alice: Thank you for taking the time to respond. I love Shikamaru as matchmaker, but too afraid
to talk to his own love interest. He’s
kind of cute in this chapter, but that’s my opinion. I hope you like it.
Nejislady: I’m starting to delve
into part of Sasuke’s problem in this chapter, but there is a lot of insecurity
in play there. Having a friend who
always grew up as “second best” no matter what he accomplished, I understand
this point of view quite a bit. My
friend has turned out fine, in no part thanks to anyone but his mother who
never made him that ‘other son’. In this
case, though it’s not really revealed yet, Mikoto is so deferential to her
husband that she never thought to dig into Sasuke’s psyche to see what he
needed. I’m so glad you still like the
story. You’ve been such a faithful
reader, and it just makes my heart soar.
Chapter Nine
Sasuke smiled as he sat between Shikaku and Chouji. “Thank you for taking me out.” He looked around at the restaurant. It wasn’t as fancy as the ones his parents
had always taken him to, but somehow it was nicer. It felt like he was part of a family here
rather than part of the decorations.
Uchihas should be seen and not heard.
He always had to be prim and proper, and there weren’t any hugs and
kisses in public; there were few enough in private. Even the baby wailing across the room didn’t
ruin the experience for him.
Shikaku shook his head.
“Don’t worry about it. My son did
something right when he was blessed with a friend like you.” Shikaku glanced at Chouji and smiled. “Both of you. Don’t worry about him forgetting you; you
know it’s impossible.”
Sasuke’s jaw dropped before he broke out in a ridiculous bout of laughter. “You’re worried about Shikamaru forgetting
about you?” He gasped as he tried to catch his breath. When Chouji nodded, Sasuke snorted. “You are both so dense.” He smiled softly at Chouji. “Talk to him about it.”
Yoshino smirked. She
had an idea why Sasuke was laughing. It was
old news to her that her son wasn’t picky about who he was with in regards to
sex, but it took a very special person to get into her son’s heart. She thought she had seen the attraction there
before, but Sasuke’s reaction just now to a ridiculous assumption served only
to confirm her suspicions. She put her
hand over Chouji’s. “If Shikamaru can be
anything, it’s not dense. I’m sure he
will understand if you tell him.”
Sasuke made sure to catch Chouji’s eyes. Without saying a word, he told Chouji they
would have a talk before the end of the evening. After seeing Chouji’s small nod, Sasuke
turned his attention back to the menu.
“I’ll have to be honest; I’m not used to this kind of place. My father only takes us to five star
restaurants because it’s,” his voice changed to imitate his father, “unbecoming
of an Uchiha to be seen with anything or anyone less than the best.”
Chouji snorted and Sasuke saw Yoshino and Shikaku (they’d
insisted he call them that) smirking in his peripheral vision. Yoshino cleared her throat. “Be that as it may, we like you anyway.” She frowned for a moment, thoughts of
Shikamaru’s increasing suicidal tendencies pushing their way forward. “If we could afford a five star restaurant,
we’d take you.”
Sasuke frowned. It
wasn’t his intention to make them feel bad.
They had been nothing but wonderful to him. “I didn’t mean it like that.” He looked into her eyes and understood that
she knew that. “I have a lot of issues
with my family. I don’t know how to move
through some of the things that plague me, but I know that the fact I missed a
real family environment growing up is responsible for some of my problems. Shikamaru has wonderful parents, and it’s not
because you can buy him everything he wants.
If anyone should know that doesn’t mean much, it’s me.”
Shikaku decided to break the tense atmosphere that had
descended in the wake of the serious conversation. “I don’t know about anyone
else, but I could use some potato skins and a beer.”
Chouji laughed. “You
always need a beer, Shikaku. If my
father had known, I’m sure he’d have managed to invite himself along.”
Shikaku smiled at the mention of his long time friend. “Yeah, but Chouza told me he didn’t think
that inviting himself along tonight was fair.
He said something about one Akamichi being enough to scar a kid for
life.”
Sasuke was almost offended for Chouji before the guy’s laugh
bubbled up from beside him. “My dad
would say something like that.” He
smiled at Sasuke sheepishly. “I suppose
you’re not used to this kind of banter either, if you’ve grown up in a stuffy
environment?”
Sasuke shook his head.
“We were never to speak unless it was something to add value to the
conversation, as such children were not supposed to speak. We weren’t educated so we could not add
anything of value the adults did not all ready know.”
Yoshino made a tut of disapproval
before she smiled at Sasuke. “You should
know you are more than welcome to say anything that is on your mind here. We don’t judge, and we certainly believe that
every input is valuable input.”
Sasuke smiled and nodded.
“I think I’d like some of the potato skins.” He peeked back at the menu one last
time. “They look really good.”
Chouji smiled.
“Better order two or three, Shikaku.
You know how I get.” Sasuke turned
a questioning glance toward Chouji only to be met with an almost impish look on
Chouji’s face. “If you couldn’t tell, I
like my food.”
Sasuke smiled throughout dinner. He couldn’t remember a time he had smiled so
much, in fact, since Shisui’s death. The
food, while not what he was used to at home, was better than anything he had
had before. He watched the relaxed
atmosphere with which the Naras and Chouji interacted with each other. He certainly didn’t have that level of
intimacy in his own family, and most certainly not with anyone outside his
family, with a very few exceptions.
As the night was winding down and he was finishing his
fourth Mountain Dew, he stood up. “I’ll
be back. Restroom.” Sasuke headed straight to the first stall. He shut the door behind him, not caring to
have anyone actually get a chance to peek at his goods. It was a strange quirk, he knew. After all, it wasn’t as if people didn’t see
it, but even his quick fucks hadn’t actually gotten to see much of it. He just didn’t like the idea of people
looking at him there. Something inside
him told him that was weird, but it was just the way it was.
He heard the door open and the unmistakable voice belonging
to Chouji. “So, that look you gave me
told me you wanted to talk.”
Sasuke tried not to fidget as he tried to force his shy
bladder to comply with his demands. He
really did have to pee. “Um, yeah.” He sighed
as his bladder finally listened to his silent pleas. He didn’t answer Chouji more until he was
finished with his business and washing his hands. “Look, I happen to know that Shikamaru thinks
you’re most likely straight.”
Chouji snorted. “I
live my life for that man. You think
he’d know how I feel about him.” He
crossed his arms. “So if I told him I’m
gay, do you think he’d take the first step and ask me out at least?”
Sasuke shrugged as he grabbed some paper towels to dry his
hands. “All I know is,
giving him a push in the right direction couldn’t hurt.”
Chouji nodded. “Why
didn’t you just use the urinal?”
Sasuke blushed before mumbling, “Shy bladder.” He didn’t mention the other reason, figuring
it wasn’t really anyone’s business but his own.
Everyone had quirks; his just happened to be a bit weirder than normal.
Chouji laughed and wrapped his arms around Sasuke’s
shoulders and pulled him in for a hug.
“I can tell that the idea of intimacy is scary for you, but please let
this family in. I know that Shikamaru
would be worse off without you, and I know that we would have been worse
without you. Please don’t hide from us.”
Sasuke nodded. Chouji
let go of him and started back to the door.
Sasuke sighed. “I’ll try,
Chouji.” He shrugged when Chouji turned
back at him with a smile. “I still don’t
know what my problem actually is, but I’d be happy to count you and the Naras
as family.”
Chouji threw his arm around Sasuke’s shoulders as they
headed back to the table. “Good. Now as family, can you tell me how Shikamaru
feels about me?”
Sasuke shook his head and smiled. “That would be a betrayal of confidence, and
I absolutely refuse to do something to someone I care about so deeply.” He smirked.
“I’m just urging you to be honest with him.”
Chouji pushed him playfully.
“Alright.”
He smirked. “Call me Chou from
now on okay? Since you’re family, don’t
waste your time with my full name.” He
thought for a moment. “Maybe next time I
visit, I’ll bring my dad with. I want
you to meet my family. I mean, you’re a
permanent part of Shikamaru’s life.
That’s obvious. I am too. Which means you’re going to
have to deal with my family at some point.”
Sasuke sighed. “I
hope to hell it means you never have to deal with my family,” he scowled at the
mere mention of his family. He felt
almost like he was floating through the rest of the night. After the perfect night he’d been through,
having to think about his family was taxing.
He didn’t want to do it, but his mind got sucked into the negative
thoughts.
He barely registered his body going through the motions of
the pleasant evening. At least he managed
to register that it was a pleasant evening.
He seemed like he was in a fog.
If anything it was the same kind of fog as he had when he ran away. He could observe everything around him from
this peaceful spot behind his consciousness.
Here he could wait until it was safe to bring himself back into the
front of his mind.
Eventually he found his full concentration back on the
family in front of him. His dark mood
was gone and he was actively part of the conversation again. He smiled at Yoshino. “Thank you again, for the night. It’s been better than I ever thought a family
night could be.”
Yoshino waved her hand in dismissal. “Sasuke, we’ve covered it. You’re more than welcome.” She was starting to stand and grabbing her
purse. “If Kakashi and your father
allow, we’d like to take all three of you boys out to a movie some night.”
Sasuke smiled. “If I
could get the permission for that, it would be wonderful.” He pulled his hoodie
on over the clothes he’d opted for. It
wasn’t really his hoodie, but Gaara had promised him
it was all right if he borrowed it for the night. Gaara didn’t want Sasuke to get cold on his
night out. Sasuke smirked a bit thinking about Gaara.
He didn’t want to say love, but there was definitely possessiveness where
the redhead was concerned, and an emotion he really wasn’t familiar with.
The drive back was peaceful.
Yoshino would sing along with the radio when the mood struck her, but
apparently that wasn’t unusual and more often than not the other two people in
the car would join in with her. He
smiled. It wasn’t that he didn’t know
The Beatles, but the fact was his breeding was ingrained. He wasn’t supposed to sing with the songs he
liked because it was considered lower than his status. Finally he couldn’t help it anymore. The sound of the others enjoying themselves
while singing along overrode his years of conditioning. He didn’t notice when the others stopped
singing to listen to him but as the last strains of Blackbird faded, he
realized everyone was looking at him. He
shrugged. “Sorry.”
Shikaku laughed.
“What have you got to be sorry for?
That’s a fantastic voice you’ve got.”
He thought for a moment. “Not
your usual style though, is it? It
seemed like you were putting your own little spin on it.”
Sasuke nodded. “I
prefer old punk. I like the Ramones, the
Sex Pistols, the Misfits.” He smiled. “Actually, Shikamaru is lending me
his Misfits CD until he gets back down in two weeks.” He sighed.
“I can’t wait. I really miss
him. I’m used to have intelligent
conversation or quiet company. Now I’ve
got this bitch Sakura trying to turn me straight or something. She drives me crazy,” he paused for a second,
“er than I all ready am.”
Yoshino was the first to laugh at Sasuke’s joke. When she finally calmed down, the rest of the
car had been infected and was working to catch their breath as well. Shikaku pulled up in front of the institution
and sighed. “Your stop, son,” he whispered.
Sasuke couldn’t help the painful, but exciting, hitch in his
breath and catch in his chest at the idea of being called son by the
Naras. “The evening was wonderful. If you get permission to take us out again,
please let me know so I can call my father.”
Chouji opened his door.
“One of us has to walk you back in, so I’ll do it.” He stepped out of the vehicle and held his
hand out to help Sasuke. Sasuke only
took a second to decide before grabbing the hand offered. He chuckled as Chouji winked at him and
grabbed his elbow before shutting the door.
“Well this date was wonderful, and hopefully we can do it again
sometime,” Chouji was making a near perfect imitation of the voice Sasuke had
used earlier to represent his father.
“Hopefully next time Shika will be able to go as well.”
Sasuke said goodbye after Kakashi met them to make sure that
Sasuke was unharmed and not in any kind of mental crisis. Sasuke went back to his room and fell on his
bed, pulling the hoodie up closer around his face and
breathing in Gaara’s scent. He closed
his eyes and found himself relaxing almost immediately.
**********************
Gaara smirked as he saw Sasuke sitting at the table, with
his hoodie beside him. Shikamaru elbowed him gently. “You need to tell him.”
Gaara shook his head.
“I can’t.” He sighed and frowned
at Shikamaru. “It’s just a matter of
time before the voices come back again.
I can’t put someone like Sasuke through that. I hate that I put my family and Naruto
through it. No one would stay with a
crazy ass bastard like me.”
Shikamaru sighed.
He’d been having the same conversation with Gaara for nearly a
week. He knew Sasuke felt the same way,
as he’d asked his friend more than once after Gaara left them how he felt. Sasuke figured Gaara wouldn’t want to be with
someone who was just a ‘spoiled rich brat’ with no real control of his
emotions.
Gaara smiled at Shikamaru, who once again didn’t balk. “You don’t get scared when I smile.” It was a casual observation, but anyone who
knew Gaara knew how much that meant to him.
Shikamaru shook his head and Gaara continued, “I’ll think about telling
him if he beats you today, but I’ll know if you throw the game.”
Shikamaru shrugged.
“I wouldn’t insult either of you that way.” He and Gaara crossed the remaining distance
in silence. Gaara slid down next to
Shikamaru as he always did while Shikamaru smiled at Sasuke. “Think you’ve got it in you to win today?”
Sasuke smirked as he pushed Gaara’s hoodie
towards him. “Thanks, Gaara.” He turned his full attention to
Shikamaru. “I might have it in me
today. I had a good date last night, or
at least that’s what Chou called it.”
Shikamaru was startled for a moment. Gaara nearly smiled. He knew his friend was harboring feelings for
Chouji, but he hadn’t met the guy yet. Shikamaru’s
lips twitched up at the corners in his amusement, “He considers you family,
does he?”
Sasuke nodded as he concentrated on their game. “He told me he wants me to meet his dad since
it seems likely that I will be a permanent part of your life and I’m going to
meet him eventually.”
Shikamaru nodded and elbowed Gaara. “See.
Friends meet their friend’s families and friends.”
Gaara snorted. “I
didn’t say you couldn’t meet them. I
just said you’re better off not meeting some of them. Kankuro can be real dick when he wants, for
starters.”
Sasuke rolled his eyes, but smirked as he finally found an
opening he thought could be the winning move.
After he placed his piece and looked back up at Shikamaru he could see
the shock registering across his friend’s face.
He smirked and mouthed checkmate at Shikamaru.
Shikamaru sighed.
He’d been distracted during the game, but that had never stopped him
from beating Sasuke before. He’d have to
remember to pay attention next time. “I
guess you win,” he shrugged and traded places with Gaara.
Gaara sighed as he rearranged the pieces on the board. “I did say I wanted to see your skills
against mine.” He blushed lightly as his
foot accidently brushed against Sasuke’s under the table. He returned to his task of setting up his
side of the board as quickly as possible.
Had he not looked down he would have seen the familiar bloom spreading
across Sasuke’s cheeks as well.
Shikamaru laughed at his friends and kicked Sasuke’s feet
under the table, telling him with his expression exactly what he should be
doing instead of being ridiculously quiet and bashful. Sasuke glanced at him and frowned. Why should he have to be the one to say
something? Besides, Gaara wasn’t
attracted to him anyway. Why should he
put himself on the line for nothing?
Another not so gentle kick from Shikamaru made Sasuke decide he should
do something. He looked at the board as
he made his first move. “Do you have a boyfriend,
Gaara?” He didn’t even both asking Gaara’s
sexuality. If Shikamaru was so
insistent, it meant he knew for sure Gaara liked boys.
Gaara blushed, but continued with the game. Sasuke was sure he’d over stepped his bounds
and was going to apologize, when Gaara suddenly answered, “No.” Sasuke noticed Shikamaru try to subtly prod
Gaara into speaking. “I like you, though.”
Sasuke couldn’t help the small blush and smile that spread
across his face. “I like you, too.” He sighed and looked down at the board. They both were concentrating on the game so
they wouldn’t have to say anything to each other.
Shikamaru chuckled softly from the side, “That wasn’t so bad
now, was it?”
Gaara was the first to speak. “You’re
one to talk Mr. I’m-so-in-love-with-my-bestfriend-it-hurts.”
Sasuke snorted. “Amen.” He sighed as Gaara beat him. “You win.”
He sighed and brushed some hair out of his face. He blushed but he figured he’d all ready been
humiliated enough. “Can I keep your hoodie?”
Gaara nodded and pushed the hoodie
across the street. “Can I have one of
your shirts?”
Sasuke nodded. “I’ll
bring this one up tomorrow.” He looked
down at his favorite tee-shirt, a black Sex Pistols shirt. “Do you want me to wash it first?”
Gaara shook his head.
“It’s fine.” He smiled softly as
he finally managed to pull his head up and look into Sasuke’s eyes. “You’re not put off that I’ll most likely
have a relapse and have the voices on me?”
Sasuke shook his head.
“If I made it through Shika’s suicide attempt,
I can make it through your voices.”
Gaara let out a sigh of relief. He stood and smiled at the say Sasuke held
his hoodie close.
“I never thought a skull and bones would be so sexy,” Gaara smirked at
Sasuke’s statement. Sasuke leaned
forward and just gently brushed his lips against Gaara’s cheek. A spark he’d never experienced before went
through his body. “I’ve got to meet with
Kakashi.”
Gaara nodded and head back toward his room. Sasuke turned on Shikamaru. “And you had better fucking tell Chouji what
you feel for him after you made me go through this with Gaara.”
Shikamaru shrugged and smirked. “Do you mean to tell me that you aren’t glad
I put the two of you together?”
Sasuke frowned. “Of
course I’m glad.” He smiled at the shirt
in his hand. “I really like him. That’s weird after just a week, isn’t it?”
Shikamaru shrugged. “You’ve
never been normal.” He smiled and pushed
Sasuke toward the door. “Go talk to
Hatake, and if you didn’t know, you’ve been invited to a movie with us in two
weekends. You should ask for permission
from your father.”
Sasuke nodded and headed down toward Hatake’s
office. He smiled. He liked Kakashi and it was becoming easier
to talk to the man. He figured he should
mention the fog he experienced. He was
finally comfortable enough with Kakashi to mention some of the things that
might actually make him crazy. It helped
that Gaara was so strong, and dealt so well with his own problem, which was
much worse than Sasuke’s.
Sasuke knocked on Kakashi’s door. “I have something to talk to you about.”
Kakashi smiled at the boy in his office. This was not the same scared Sasuke. Something had happened to make him feel safe
enough to open up. “Sure.”
