every finger in the room is pointing at me
I wanna spit in their faces
then I get afraid of what that could bring
I got a bowling ball in my stomach
I got a desert in my mouth
figures that my COURAGE would choose to sell out now
I’ve been raising up my hands
drive another nail in
just what GOD needs one more victim
every day I crucify myself
nothing I do is good enough for you
and my HEART is sick of being in chains
you’re just an empty cage kid if you kill the bird
please be save me I CRY

Chapter IX There Is No Life Without Understanding
Itachi never let it show but he did grow increasingly worried as he saw how Neji evaded his gaze. Seeing him like this nearly confirmed that they would both stay in Konoha and that he would have to kill him soon. He wasn’t going to back down and he was prepared to kill Neji if he needed to. It would break him though. Those beautiful eyes would be staring at him as blood chortled up from a pale throat. Knowing Neji, he would keep looking at him and Itachi would have to bite his lip to prevent from crying for the first time in nearly seventeen years. Taking his own life would be decidedly easier after Neji’s death. He had just hoped Neji wouldn’t let it come that far. Neji moved closer to him and wrapped his arms around his waist. Any moment now, he expected Neji to say that he loved him but wasn’t prepared to abandon his village.
“Let’s escape,” Neji said enigmatically. Itachi grit his teeth, wanting him to be clear and let him know what would need to happen. Neji lifted his head and kissed him briefly. “I’ll follow you to Akatsuki.”
Itachi tightly enveloped him in an embrace and let his head rest on top of Neji’s, closing his eyes and breathing out relieved. He understood now why Neji had avoided his gaze. He was scared, scared about leaving everything they knew behind and perhaps even regretting it. But Konoha be damned, he would go as far as possible to not make him regret it.
“You won’t regret it. We’ll be able to stay together. And we will be free. You’ll get the freedom you want.” Especially the two last sentences would leave an impression. Neji’s search for freedom had dominated nearly his whole life and it was never far in his mind.
Neji did look up as if seeking for confirmation. It was true, they would be free in a complicated way. But in fact, they were going from one ally to another, from two cages to a single larger one. Would they really be so free? Itachi’s lips sought his mouth and he let himself enjoy the touch. The thought hit him that it’s better to be stuck in a cage with someone else than having to spend the rest of your life alone, in many areas. He never wanted to be as alone again as he was before he met Itachi and as much as Hinata or Shikamaru would try, he would never trust them as much as he did Itachi. The least he could was give this a chance. Because even with all the belief in the world, the time they spent together in this life could very well be all the time they had. As this realization hit him, he frantically pulled at Itachi’s clothes, nearly ripping them to shreds in his hurry to be as intimately close to him as possible.
Itachi noticed the urgency bordering on desperation and let Neji do as he wished. If this was what he needed, then he would give it to him. The moment he was naked, Neji pushed him on the couch and stripped himself of his own clothes before crawling in his lap and slamming their lips together. He feared that Neji would end up hurting himself if he let him continue as he wanted and broke their kiss, slipping three of his fingers in Neji’s mouth. They were hurriedly lathered with saliva and Neji pushed them towards his entrance, letting one sink in. He made thrusting movements before adding a second. Neji let keening noises escape from between his clenched teeth and he quickly added a third, knowing Neji wasn’t willing to wait any longer. His fingers were pushed out and Neji sat himself higher, guiding Itachi’s cock in.
As he took in more and more, they kept looking at each other, both using this as a moment to gather their strength because the pace would be frenzied, they knew.
Neji immediately lifted himself again and slammed back down, crying out in pain but he repeated the motion and he was glad that Itachi’s hips shot up every time he came down. He clawed at Itachi’s chest, tears forming in his eyes from the flare of pain every time he lowered himself but now was not the time to slow down; it was to show them both that they were in this together.
Everything happened frantically, Itachi’s hands flying over his skin, their mouths bruised from the harsh contact, their brows already with a fine sheen of sweat. It was nearly too much to take in but he wouldn’t slow down and just let it all wash over him. He cried out as his prostate received a particularly harsh thrust and then another and another… A wordless scream left him as his orgasm made tremors course through him and he was vaguely aware that he was pulling Itachi’s hair hard with his fists but he only heard him gasp. Itachi held his hips down as he emptied himself deep inside of him, filling him even more. Neji forced his hands to release their grip and placed his arms around Itachi’s neck, his head falling on his shoulder as they both tried to slow their breathing down.
“I would have hated myself for killing you,” Itachi finally said.
Neji lifted his head so they could look at each other. “I wouldn’t. Few things are as intimate as killing someone…” They both recognized the last for what it was. That thirst that can only disappear with murdering someone. Itachi raked his hand through chocolate tresses, affirming in silence that he understood perfectly. Those two years in ANBU Core had already affected him deeply but he couldn’t have been more proud of him. After that second mission, Neji had forced himself to do as Itachi said and not think of the moral side.
And now here he was nearly two years later as one of the most talented and powerful members of their elite. Itachi had heard many others comment on his prodigious talent rivalling his own. Soon, that talent would be used to further the goals of Akatsuki and he would do excellent. They truly were alike.
He lifted Neji’s hips and slipped out before swiftly holding him in his arms and going upstairs. Almost reverently, he placed Neji on the bed and let his eyes rove over a pale and perfect body. Neji let him look, long since having become accustomed to this and accepting this as a natural part of a relationship; speaking the admiration for the other in words and gestures, in looks and in willingness. And tonight, it was a whole new layer added to it. Tonight signified the rest of their lives together.
He crawled over Neji and grabbed his lips in a consuming kiss. “Will you ever regret your decision?”
Neji sighed, turning his gaze away. “I will regret leaving the people behind I care about. But I won’t regret staying with you.” Itachi lifted the bedcovers and wrapped Neji in his arms, laying the blankets over them.
“When will we be leaving?” He would be lying if he said it didn’t hurt him to know he couldn’t give anyone a proper goodbye, would have to leave without any further explanation and it would be a matter of months before they would find out he went to join Akatsuki. He could only let Shikamaru know that they had decided to take their chance without giving away the entire plan.
“Hoshigaki Kisame will be waiting for us in two weeks. I have to find a mission by then for us but that shouldn’t be a problem.” Neji twirled black hair around his fingers and studied the intensely dark colour, even in the moonlight.
“Won’t you ever regret leaving Konoha?”
Itachi shook his head. “If it hadn’t been for you, I would have left this village years ago.” The confession made Neji jerk his head, looking at him incredulously before remembering Itachi’s family and the too-heavy burden they had placed on young shoulders. Itachi’s response shouldn’t have surprised him so much, especially since he had also decided to escape the village in search for something else, something better, freer.
“What if my family catches up to us?”
Itachi settled a hand on his cheek so he would lay his head down again, the hand never leaving its place. “I’ll get us a three-week mission, giving us sufficient time to reach the Akatsuki-lair. We will be declared missing-nin if we don’t return a month after the mission’s ending date.”
Not once in his life could Neji have suspected that he would be declared a missing-nin, always working for Konoha and being as loyal as he possibly could, pushing himself further to protect the village and do as he was told. Now his loyalty would be pledged to Akatsuki, an enemy considered greater than Orochimaru.
He flicked his fingers across his forehead and looked at Itachi. There would be many sacrifices but it would be worth it in the end. He briefly thought how easier it had been hadn’t he begun a relationship with Itachi. He would have gotten married to Kaoru, something he still would have protested but not as vigorously and for a less substantial reason. Crawling closer to Itachi and burying his head in his neck as if to shield himself away from the rest of the world, he chided himself. It was useless to think about since he had begun a relationship with Itachi and while it was decidedly harder, it was also much more rewarding to be able to have moments like this one with someone he truly loved.
There would be times when he would hate Itachi for forcing him to make this choice and he knew they both were aware of this. Times in which they would stand in front of each other and have murder-intent radiating off of them. In those moments, they would need to re-appreciate the other and remember how far they had come together and how far they had always been willing to go with the other by their side.
Itachi tightened his grip on Neji and had a tiny smile on his lips. Neji had just made him experience the happiest moment in his conscious life by telling him he would follow him to Akatsuki. Not only would he be freed of his patronizing family, he would have freed Neji as well and be able to keep him near, have him in his arms when they weren’t doing missions for Akatsuki and let the world show that Neji was his. Finally, he would be able to claim Neji as purely and solely his, something he had yearned to do ever since starting their relationship. The envy and jealousy he felt when he caught men and women alike leering at him as if he was a prize to be had, he could barely prevent himself from attacking them and simply gauging their eyes out. Only in missions where they took a few extra days as a sort of vacation, he was able to walk on the street with his arm wrapped around Neji’s waist but the moment they joined Akatsuki, he would be able to do so every single time he desired.
That alone was enough to make him look forward to the next few weeks which would undoubtedly be chaotic but worth the trouble since Neji would escape his family and arranged marriage and he would worm out of the grasp of his clan and they would have eternity together. There was not a single spark of doubt; he would have Neji as his forever. A realistic point of view made it clear that as missing-nin, S-Class even, they could forget about having a long life, reaching age thirty. But the gods could forget that death would release his grasp on Neji.
This did raise the question on what he would do if Neji didn’t want him in his life anymore. His smile faltered and he gazed at Neji’s long mane of soft hair. That is something that never had been in his control and never would be; Neji’s own feelings towards him. He hated not being in control of this, only given the chance to hope and perhaps even pray that it would never come that far. But he loves me. He can’t just stop loving me, not Neji. He had unconsciously tightened his embrace so much that Neji was pulling at his arms and he gave him a cold stare, his last conscious thought still fresh.
“You love me, right?”
Neji rolled his eyes. “I’m going to become a missing-nin for you.” The penetrating stare remained and he placed a hand on Itachi’s cheek.
“Yes, I love you.” He tried to lace his tone of voice with as much determination as he could muster, trying to get through to Itachi. Finally, red turned back to black and Itachi loosened his arms. Undeterred, Neji crawled back in his favourite niche and breathed softly against pale skin. It were confusing times for both of them but he didn’t mind calming down Itachi, knowing he must have suffered a great deal of stress too in the past two weeks. They would need to learn even more to be open and honest and have blind trust since the only thing they could count on in the near future was each other. All their past securities would disappear and no other alliances could be made. A week ago, Neji would have been petrified at the thought but Itachi was worthy of the inner struggle he had gone through. He would be there for him, regardless of what would happen.

“So um… what do you like to do in your spare time?” Neji wanted to groan in frustration, thinking about all the things he could have been doing instead of being forced to spend the day with his supposedly future wife. He had to give the girl credit for trying to overcome her own shyness and make contact with him but that quickly disappeared as he remembered what Hinata had said this morning. Kaoru revelled in the fact that he was attractive and held a high and respected position in Konoha.
Their wedding would have been nothing more than a chance for her to gloat and cling herself to him to show he was hers. It was difficult to believe she held such a shallow side as she stood next to him, a blush on her cheeks and hands once again fiddling with her lavish kimono but Hinata had never been one to lie to him and believed that by telling him, he could change Kaoru before things got out of hand. Neji gladly gave that honour to another man.
“I like flowers,” Kaoru muttered at length, fingering the pink petals of a tsubaki.
He made a noise in confirmation but turned towards the nearby forest and smirked. Apparently, he wasn’t the only one disgruntled about being near Kaoru. Assured that Kaoru had her attention focused on the flowerbeds, he formed the signal commonly used during missions when help was needed. Soon enough, Itachi elegantly landed next to him in full ANBU Core-gear. Kaoru looked up startled and hid behind Neji, clinging her hands in the back of his shirt. It took all of Itachi’s willpower to not kill the girl then and there for touching what was his but he knew for certain that he would forever be the only one who could touch every little line of Neji’s body, make him beg and cry out for more but most importantly, who Neji loved. He was his. It would be a matter of weeks before everyone would realize this as well.
“We have a mission requiring instant assistance.” Neji nodded his head and jerked out of Kaoru’s hold. He knew he hadn’t been fooling himself in thinking that Itachi would have devised a little plan to get him out of this without being disrespectful. Hiashi wasn’t stupid enough to go against the Hokage’s orders.
“I’m afraid I will have to leave you for now, Kaoru-san.” She giggled in response, waving her hand.
“Kaoru is fine. We will be married soon after all.” The tone in which she said it gave a glimpse of her true personality. Her embarrassment and nervous behaviour were all just an act to cover up the superficial and bland personality lying underneath. “Your uncle didn’t tell me you were an ANBU.” Neji was confused for a moment, wondering why Hiashi-sama kept it hidden from the girl he wanted him to marry. Then it clicked. With ANBU-missions, the percent of casualties every year was increasingly higher than with any other rank. Losing him would make her whole shallow world fall from under her feet.
“ANBU Core, actually,” he corrected, adding the proverbial salt to the wound. Her mouth tightened into a thin line and she nodded before walking off briskly, not sparing either Neji or Itachi another glance. “I’m going to get ready,” Neji said to Itachi.
“Take some extra clothes with you. We can stay in the Nara’s house for a few days.” Itachi had turned his mask to the side of his head and smirked slightly as he saw a look of relief on Neji’s face.
“Hurry.” Neji nodded and nearly ran to his room, Itachi following him with his eyes.
Hiashi slammed open the door, not caring the state Neji was in. “You’re going to resign as an ANBU Core.” Neji almost wanted to laugh out in disbelief, thinking his ears had betrayed him. He fastened the straps of his armour and sheathed his katana but received a hard slap across his cheek.
“Did you not hear me!? You are going to get out of that uniform and go back to your future wife.”
Neji grabbed the hand that was now squeezing his shoulder and threw it away. “Let me guess, she came complaining to you about me? I will not, under any circumstance give up ANBU and especially not for her. And try as you may, I’m under the Hokage’s direct command so you don’t have a say in it. I’m late for my mission.” He was silently marvelled at how much he had grown in the past two years and how Hiashi’s threats didn’t affect him in the sense that he would call himself weak but just angered him. Grabbing his mask, he walked past his uncle but was harshly jerked back. He stumbled but used the fall to spin around and spit in Hiashi’s face.
“All these years I believed you when you called me weak and a disgrace but how I was wrong. I’m better than this whole clan put together and you’re getting desperate because I’m still slipping out of your grip even when you try and tie me down in this marriage. Even when this marriage is official,” he hissed, careful to use the correct phrasing as to not rouse any suspicion, “I’ll still make my own choices.” He reached for his bag and stepped onto the windowsill, disappearing from sight, someone quickly walking up next to him.
Hiashi was left behind, for once feeling even a hint of what he had put Neji through. Yet, even though Neji clearly insisted on being rebellious and believing that he could make his own choices, there was still one thing that would keep him in line, regardless of how strong he was. The curse-seal bound Neji to his family until the day of his death and this awareness helped the anger creep back up to him as he wiped the spit from his face. He would make Neji remember his place – forever one of the Bunke, under every last one of the Sōke.

Sasuke glared at the people across from him, not caring about every single detail of their wedding which was still more than a year from now. Of course that dobe only coaxed more information out of Hinata, honestly curious since he had never been to a wedding before. Kiba was wolfing down his ramen, every once in a while loudly throwing in a stupid remark and Ino, Chōji, Sakura and Lee had invited themselves to the table. If this didn’t end soon, Naruto could forget about a spar with him. Naruto suddenly talked in a meek voice, his usual burst of enthusiasm missing.
“How’s Neji doing?” Hinata looked crestfallen as she was reminded of her nephew and his doomed relationship with Uchiha Itachi and felt selfish for being so excited already about her own wedding with a person she already loved.
“Not well. Otou-san even wants him to give up his position as ANBU Core because his bride finds it too dangerous and they have been fighting constantly about it.” It wasn’t until she stopped talking that she realized just what she had said and she frantically looked around. Seven pairs of eyes stared back, shock clearly visible.
“ANBU… Core? Since when is he-?” Naruto was thoroughly confused since he had always thought you had to be at least eighteen to get in there.
“How long has he been ANBU Core, Hinata?” Sasuke asked directly. He couldn’t believe that once again that Hyūga had been promoted, widening the gap between them and he placed his hands flat on the tabletop so he wouldn’t yell at her since that definitely wouldn’t give him an answer to his question. Hinata lifted two fingers as she curled up to Kiba. “Two weeks, two months? How long!?”
“Years.” It was whispered so softly no one almost heard it but then Sakura fell back into the booth.
“Years!? Since he was sixteen? That’s insane!” She shook her head, finding it wrong that someone so young was told to do the dirtiest missions, those that “never happened”.
Sasuke stormed out of his seat and walked to the exit. Naruto cringed and hurried after him, the others deciding to follow. Hinata watched them go, Kiba’s arm safely wrapped around her and cursed herself for her own stupidity. Instead of giving Neji a moment of peace, she had just made things ten times worse.
Sasuke raced through Konoha, trying to find that arrogant prick. He was an ANBU Core for two years!? How was it possible that he had gotten in at sixteen while he was still a Jounin? Itachi is ANBU Core. The thought halted his movements and he suddenly remembered that morning when he had seen Hyūga in his brother’s room. Could it be that his own brother had something to do with it? He continued running, hoping that it was his own paranoia speaking. His brother’s reaction had had him convinced but now that spark of doubt returned. He wouldn’t be able to bear the thought that his brother had chosen that asshole over him.
His Sharingan located Neji’s chakra-signature at the training-fields and he landed on the soft grass.
“Hyūga, how did you get into ANBU Core?” he yelled across the field. Several other people that were training nearby stopped their training, their curiosity growing and they looked from Sasuke to Neji, who calmly finished his move before turning to Sasuke.
“What makes you think that?” He doubted Shikamaru or Itachi told him and he certainly didn’t get it from Hiashi-sama. So either he had somehow seen his tattoo or…
“Hinata.”
Neji shrugged his shoulders. “And what is it to you if I am a member?”
“The way you became one. How many times did you let my brother fuck you before you got in, huh!?” The accusation made everyone start to whisper excitedly. The idea of Hyūga Neji and Uchiha Itachi having sex was enough to make some girls swoon.
“I never forgot that morning I found you in Itachi’s bedroom and now it makes sense.” The whispers got louder and Neji could already see some boys making disgusting gestures towards him. If he walked away now, he would have Sasuke following him like a bloodhound, not to mention the many rumours spreading like a wildfire which could complicate their defection from Konoha.
“Do you hear yourself talk?” he spat out angrily. How could he think that letting someone fuck him was enough to get into ANBU Core? Yes, he had already been together with Itachi when he received the invitation and yes, Itachi had been the one to recommend him. But if he hadn’t been talented enough, he wouldn’t have gotten in. It would have posed too great a risk during missions. Itachi would never let his feelings blind his eyes. He walked closer to Sasuke and pointedly looked him in the eye.
“I don’t know what twisted ideas you have but if you would think logical for a moment, you would see that I got in because I am a talented shinobi. Your frustration because you aren’t ANBU Core should have nothing to do with me and instead of getting angry at me because I am one, you should spend some more time training. Now if you’ll excuse me, some of us actually work to get better.” He turned around and went back to his training-spot as if he didn’t have a care in the world.
Sasuke was furious. Not only had that slut dismissed his accusation, he had also pointed out the difference in their rank for everyone to hear. He quickly held out his right-arm and a harsh blue light and crackling sound filled the air. Dragging his arm, he ran to Neji who had turned around and already got ready to attack him. He was almost there, a smirk on his face. Neji couldn’t possibly avoid getting hit, no matter how fast he was. Almost there.
A hand wrapped around his wrist and he slammed into a body, his Chidori only hitting thin air. He tried to jerk his arm loose but the grip was firm and he dispelled his attack.
“What do you think you’re doing?” he heard his brother’s ice-cold voice.
“Teaching that slut a lesson! He used you to get into ANBU Core and you still jump in to protect him. Are you blind, aniki!?” Itachi threw his arm away and he bent down to closely look at Sasuke, who defiantly stared back.
“I am here to stop you from making a mistake. If you had injured him, you would be tried for attempted murder and end up in prison. You would lose your rank and have your tenketsu permanently blocked.” The logical reasoning made Sasuke regret his move.
“But I saw him in your bedroom that morning and you can only get into ANBU Core if you are recommended,” he sputtered weakly.
“I was the one to recommend him.” This made Sasuke’s head jerk up, his regret disappearing fast.
“I knew it! He is using you!”
“I didn’t recommend you because you let your emotions get in the way too much. Believe what you want, otouto, but remember what I just told you. Personal affairs have no business in ANBU Core.”
Naruto quickly made his way to Neji, slightly worried about him even though the jutsu didn’t hit him. Chidori was an attack few people could guard themselves against. He could still remember that fight he and Sasuke had had in the Valley of the End after they had gotten into an epic argument about who was the strongest. It had ended up being a decisive move with Rasengan versus Chidori and even he had lost against the clash of lightning.
“You okay?”
Neji didn’t even look at him, his eyes fixed on Itachi. “What do you want, Uzumaki?” Naruto cringed at the distant addressing.
“Just… checking.” “I’m still standing on my feet so it’s safe to presume I am okay.” Itachi went to stand near Neji, gesturing for him to follow him and Neji did so, not saying goodbye to Naruto. Naruto followed them with his eyes and as they got out of sight, he walked to Sasuke, who was staring at his feet, unusually humble.
“It doesn’t matter that Neji is ANBU Core, teme!” he tried and cheer him up. Sasuke shook his head. “It does.” He made hand-signs and disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Naruto now wished he had listened to what Itachi said.
“I can take care of myself, you know,” Neji huffed as they walked through the forest, on their way to their training-spot.
“I know. I only wanted to prevent Sasuke from making a mistake.” He wrapped an arm around Neji’s waist, checking that there was no one around before pushing him against a tree trunk and covering Neji’s mouth with his own. Neji was quick to respond but then slapped him on the back of his head.
“I’m still mad at you.” Itachi didn’t let this deter him and he placed his hands on Neji’s ass, lifting him and settling Neji between his body and the tree. He pulled the high collar down and found a patch of skin, already red from the night before and licked it.
Neji tried to squirm out of the grasp but his resistance was cracking as he felt that sensitive spot on his neck getting attention and he unconsciously turned his head so Itachi would be able to reach it easily. His hips ground against Itachi’s as much as his position let him and he let out small gasps as little sparks of pleasure spread through his body. Itachi sucked his neck harder and he set his hand on his head to keep him as close as possible, his legs wrapped tightly around Itachi’s waist. He bit his lip as the ecstasy grew but let out a cry of disappointment when Itachi released his grip and set him back on his feet. He glared vehemently at him and pushed him away, angrily stomping away.
“I hate you,” he hissed, although both knew he didn’t mean it.
“And I love you.” Neji kept walking but a smile did spread on his lips, his pace slowing down a bit so Itachi could catch up to him.
“I didn’t mean it,” he reaffirmed softly.
Itachi rubbed his head affectionately. “I know.”

Madara was staring at Neji with the same expression he had used when he approached Itachi ten years ago. Neji should no longer fret about the possibility of being killed here; Madara was far too interested in him and his talents now.
“Let’s start.”
