Chapter Eight
She was in trouble, she just knew it.
Mahina nervously chewed on her knuckle, looking around the room. Uncles Kakashi and Sai were there with Auntie Sakura who was standing next to Naruto. She forced herself to look at Tsunade, seeing the concern in the older woman's honey colored eyes. "It's okay, Mahina. We just want to hear what you have to say." Tsunade said gently knowing full well that the little girl was afraid.
"Are you going to tell Sasuke?"
Naruto inwardly flinched, hearing how soft the little girl's voice was. They could all hear the fear in her voice and see the terror in her eyes. "Why would we tell Sasuke?" Sakura questioned, almost afraid of the little girl's answer. "Mahina, we're happy you're talking now."
"Sasuke says that I'm bad if I talk."
Just what in the hell did Sasuke tell her? Sai looked at the little girl, feeling anger growing within his chest. He had taken a liking to the little girl, helping her develop her obvious artistic abilities. In time he planned on teaching her how to make her art come to life so she could send messages in secret with no one knowing about it. Hearing that someone had told her she was bad just because she said something was really pissing him off. "Duck butt doesn't know anything." Sai stated calmly.
Naruto smiled gently at the little girl, quietly going over to her and kneeling in front of her so they were eye level. "Hi-Hi, you're not bad if you talk to us. That's good since we don't always know what you're really thinking. Your drawings and our interpretation of them are guesses and you know how often we misinterpret them." Naruto explained.
"I'm not bad?"
"Heck no."
Mahina chewed softly on her knuckle, searching Naruto's eyes for any lies. He was sad, she saw, but that was because she was afraid. "Do I have to say everything?" Mahina asked finally.
"No, you can stop at anytime." Tsunade answered patiently. "How come you decided to start talking again?"
The little girl was silent for a moment before whispering, "I didn't want to be scared."
"Of what?"
"Sasuke. He hurt me when I talked so I stopped. He still hurt me. Orochimaru too."
"What'd Sasuke do to you?"
They watched as the little girl gripped the chair tightly, her chest rising and falling as fear placed itself on her face. "Made his eyes go red. I don't like them when they're red." Mahina whimpered.
Tsunade thought about the little girl's drawings, remembering having seen a picture of Sasuke with red eyes. She told them why she didn't talk, but they hadn't gotten the message. They had heard about the experiments and the abuse, but they hadn't heard about Sasuke's role. Somehow the child's voice had been lost to them when they couldn't understand the picture.
Naruto was silent as he gently took the now crying little girl into his arms, quietly rocking her against him. His eye fell on Sakura, seeing the unshed tears in her eyes. She didn't understand how Sasuke could have been so cruel, how he could have said such terrible things. How long had she been living in her own fear, helpless to stop it from eating away at her sanity?
How far gone was she?
Actually, now that they thought about it, that explained why she didn't like anything red. Sasuke's sharingan was red and after a while, she began to associate red with pain. Hell, that actually explained why she had been on edge whenever Sai was around. The pale shinobi actually bore some resemblance to Sasuke so it had been no wonder why she had been afraid of him for so long. "Mahina, is there anything that you drew that we might not have understood?" Kakashi questioned carefully.
"I don't want to talk no more." Mahina whispered before burying her face in the crook of Naruto's neck.
Tsunade nodded slightly in understanding, amazed that the little girl had talked that much. Naruto had told them that the little girl hadn't spoken all morning, choosing instead to remain silent. "Can I ask you a few more questions later and you can tell me about them?" Tsunade questioned patiently.
Mahina shrugged her shoulders before rocking an imaginary baby in her arms as she looked at Naruto. The blonde smiled, knowing immediately what she wanted. Calmly, he reached into the bag they had brought along and took out the little girl's favorite doll. Gently setting her on the floor, the five adults watched as she retreated to a corner and sat down, rocking the doll in her arms. "There's got to be more we're missing." Tsunade said as she made notes and clipped them onto the picture of Sasuke with his Sharingan activated. "If we missed that one, who knows how much more we've missed."
"We've been able to verify that we were correct with our assumptions." Kakashi reminded the woman. "Remember, we did run what we thought by Mahina and if we were right, she nodded. If we were wrong, we kept guessing until we hit it."
As much as she hated to admit it, Kakashi was right. They had gotten quite a bit of information despite the child's silence, but she couldn't shake the feeling that they were missing something important. But what the hell had Sasuke's role been in the whole thing?
What else had he done?
Over the next few days, word had spread around to Mahina's regular babysitters that the little girl had begun speaking. Of course, Rock Lee was constantly accidentally scaring her into silence and had been thrown through more than a dozen trees over a three day period. By the third day, they noted with slight amusement, the green clad man had gotten a concussion.
Of course, word had also been going around that Sasuke had been seen in the area. Despite their attempts to keep the news from Mahina, the little girl somehow found out and had taken to hiding all over again. Naruto had been furious when he heard that his daughter had found out, but was calmly trying to make her understand that she wouldn't be hurt. "Remember, there's always an ANBU watching you." Naruto reminded the little girl. "If Sasuke tries anything, he'll be taken down."
"He could trap them. His eyes are bad."
"Yeah, but that's why Uncle Kakashi willingly offered to keep an eye on you." Naruto answered with a grin. "He's got an eye just like Sasuke does, but he doesn't like to use his eye."
"Why?"
"His eye makes him tired. Don't worry anymore about Sasuke, okay? He won't be stupid enough to come near you anymore."
"Promise?"
"Hai, I promise."
Of course, just because Sasuke wouldn't dare go near the little girl didn't mean that he wouldn't. After all, the child's abilities could actually be beneficial to the Akatsuki. Besides, she could be used to lure the nine-tails to their lair so they could get the demon.
Crimson eyes looked over the bloody corpse, knowing that only minutes before the shinobi had been guarding the little girl. She was with a babysitter since Naruto had been called over to a neighboring village, but he had no quarrels with the caregiver unless the said caregiver interfered.
Calmly the raven haired man slipped into the little girl's room, pausing for a moment to take in his surroundings. The child was obviously loved dearly and, if the amount of toys was any indication, was being spoiled. His eyes fell upon the two bookcases in the corner of the room, seeing that the both of them were filled. Apparently the child was clever if she was already reading some of those books.
A soft sound reached his ears, drawing the man's attention to the little girl that was sound asleep. Her pillow had fallen to the floor, but she didn't seem to care. Instead, she seemed content just to sleep with a retina searing orange jacket. So the rumors were true. She was now the nine-tail's daughter.
The man carefully picked the child up, stiffening slightly when she breathed in sharply. He relaxed when she nestled back down to sleep, obviously comfortable where she was. Without saying a word, he took off into the night to meet up with his partner.
That little brat! As soon as he got his hands on her, she was going to be a dead child! He didn't care if they needed her to lure the nine-tails to them, she was going to die! If she didn't die, he was going to break her legs and let them heal out of place so she'd be permanently ruined!
To say that Kisame didn't like children was an understatement. He absolutely hated the little snot nosed brats and the less he had to deal with them, the happier he was. He would have been content with just letting Itachi go retrieve the brat, but nooo... he had to be drug into this mission as well! Itachi was the older brother, he understood children.
Of course, that was probably explaining the terrified screams that were reaching his ears now. Itachi had known of an excellent place for a child to hide and from how badly the child was screaming, she had gotten her ass paddled.
Following the sounds of the little girl's screams, he smirked when he saw that paddling the girl's ass was exactly what Itachi was doing. "I'll tell my daddy on you!" Mahina sobbed when she was thrown to the ground. "He'll make you pay for hurting me!"
"Shut up, you spoiled brat." Kisame snarled. "Your daddy will come running the moment he finds out that we have you. Then you can cry your little eyes out when he's buried."
Mahina's eyes widened in shock as she stared at the shark-man, her breaths quickening. Kisame silently swore as he jumped back, barely avoiding becoming a shish kabob. Why that little... he was going to teach her a lesson she wouldn't soon forget.
Before he could do anything, Itachi grabbed the little girl and put her on his back. "If you behave," said Itachi calmly as he looked back at the little girl, "you'll get to go home sooner."
"You're lying! You want to hurt Daddy!"
"It's nothing personal. If it were, you'd already be dead." Itachi stated calmly. "Now behave or you'll be spanked again."
She didn't like them, but she knew full well that they'd do more to her than spank her butt. She had seen what Ibiki and Anko did to make people do what they wanted, to make them talk. But she was a little kid, she didn't know anything important! Why were they taking her away from Konoha?
As she looked at the two men, she knew she had to do something. Smiling to herself, she thought of the one thing that had driven one of her ANBU caretakers into a fit. Opening her mouth, she took a deep breath. "I'm hungry," she stated calmly. "I want candy."
"We don't have candy."
"I want candy."
"We don't have candy." Itachi repeated calmly.
"I said... I WANT CANDY!"
Somebody must have been either in a pissed off mood when that little monster was thought of or somebody had a very twisted sense of humor. Every two minutes the little monster wanted something before refusing to take it when they did manage to give her what they wanted. One minute she wanted water, but then she threw it to the ground saying that it was too warm. When they tried again, she threw it at Kisame claiming that it was too cold.
She must have sensed that he hated her. That was the only explanation he could think of that fitted why she insisted on tormenting him. Itachi seemed to ignore her rants, apparently used to the "childish" demands that she made. Finally, the dark haired shinobi grabbed the little girl and threw her to the ground, shoving her head underwater for a few seconds. When the little girl's head was pulled up, she was coughing and gasping for air, sobs leaving her lips. "Keep your mouth shut. Now." Itachi warned the little girl. "Next time you say something, it had better be good and what you really need or else I'll hold you underwater until you drown. Am I understood?"
Mahina glared at Itachi through her tears, her nails digging into her soft skin. "I hate you." Mahina said finally.
"I don't care."
Grabbing the little girl again, they started running again knowing that there would be shinobi following them. They had, after all, kidnapped the future Hokage's daughter and if they were caught, they would immediately be killed. As they ran, they knew full well that it didn't matter. Soon enough they would have the nine-tails in their possession so they could possibly make the little girl support their cause. If not, well, Kisame was eager to end her life.
So this was the nine-tails' little girl.
Pein smirked softly to himself as he looked at the little girl, seeing that she was clinging tightly to the orange jacket in her arms. Tears were rolling down her face, an indication that she was truly afraid and understood her situation quite well. "What's your name?" Pein questioned, wanting to hear the little girl's "colorful" vocabulary for himself.
Mahina glared at him through her tears, refusing to say a word. Those stupid butt munching monkeys could fall over and die for all she cared. "Answer him!" Kisame said, roughly shoving the little girl.
The little girl opened her mouth and bit down as hard as she could, locking her jaw as the blue skinned man tried to make her let go. She dug her nails into his wrist, glaring at him with hateful eyes as he swung her around, refusing to cry out every time she hit the ground. "Don't hurt her. Tobi thinks she's afraid." Tobi said suddenly. "If she was around the nine-tails, then she maybe learned animal traits. Can Tobi take her?"
"Fine. If you can get her off of Kisame."
The task was easier done than said since all Tobi had done was touch the little girl's shoulder. "Tobi will take care of you." Tobi said cheerfully. "You don't have to be afraid of Tobi."
Mahina moved away from the Akatsuki member, eyeing them each with varying degrees of seriousness. She was scared, yes, but she wouldn't let them use her to hurt Naruto. "What's your name, little one?" A blonde haired man questioned.
The little girl frowned, deciding then and there that there was only one way to stay alive and keep her father safe.
She needed to remain silent once more.
