Sasuke sat cross legged on the floor of the bedroom he'd been sharing with Naruto, his back leaning against the wall behind him. The futons had long been folded up neatly and stacked against the opposite wall, and now he was watching Naruto. The boy was searching frantically through the contents of the little closet set into one wall, now strewn across the floor. He wasn't sure what it was that the blond was searching for, he just knew that it had been more than an hour since the two of them had started packing.
Sasuke's own bag was sitting downstairs by the door, ready to leave, and Sakura's bags- which Sasuke had declared more stuff than a baby girl could use in three weeks, let alone the three days they'd be gone -were already over at Iruka's house, along with the girl herself. Naruto was still packing himself though, and it made Sasuke chuckle quietly watching him toss garment after garment over his shoulder- pieces of his regular orange jumpsuits, pieces of the dark chunnin and jounin uniforms, even some small white pieces of armor that reminded Sasuke suspiciously of the ANBU uniform -though it did give him pause to think someone was going to have to clean it up later, and it would probably be him.
Naruto had become worried about dressing like a civilian when he'd seen the ensemble that Sasuke had chosen for the day. It had Sasuke raising a metaphorical eyebrow at the time because it wasn't much different than the clothing he wore every day. Sure the pants were different, without the plethora of pockets he had used for his plethora of exploding tags and poisons and the like before his return, and without the little med kit he still usually strapped to his thigh, or the weapons pouch though that had been sitting in the top of the upstairs closet as of late. Tsunade had agreed to give it back to them after he was released into Naruto's care, but she had made the blond promise to keep it away from the Uchiha until he was dubbed a low flight risk. Naruto had told him exactly where he put it, the blond was a man of infinite faith, he had yet to put it back on though.
He heaved a deep sigh as Naruto reached the bottom of the little closet, and turned to search through all of the scattered clothing around the room, as if maybe he'd missed something the first time around. Sasuke heaved himself to his feet and reached out, gathering things and sorting them into several piles, neatly folding them as Naruto passed each one by. It wasn't long before everything was neatly sorted, and the blond was casting his gaze around the room as if something was eluding him.
"I swear I had some civilian clothes in here somewhere! Iruka got me some when we went shopping awhile ago, when I got home with Sakura. I don't know where I put them..." Sasuke rolled his eyes as Naruto flailed his arms in a dramatic show of frustration, and reached out to grab a tanned wrist, pulling the boy around so he could look in his eyes. The words that were on the tip of his tongue died, as Naruto's eyes widened in surprise, looking into his own. It didn't take him long to recover though, his tongue darting out to wet his lips as he turned away, willing down the blush he felt warming his cheeks.
"It's fine, Naruto. As long as you keep your weapons and supplies tucked away we'll be fine. And if it really bothers you, we can buy you something else when we get there. The onsen is surrounded by shops anyways..." Naruto stood still for another few seconds, his eyes still wide with surprise before they narrowed.
"Okay I guess, but no girl's clothing this time!" That brought a smirk back to Sasuke's face- he could still see Naruto wearing the kimono he'd bought for the blond when they'd traveled to the monastery, which sat in the basement of the little house, wrapped up carefully in tissue -as he let his hand drop from Naruto's arm, already missing the warmth that had seeped through the boy's shirt.
"But they looked so good on you..." The playful punch hit him squarely on the arm, but he'd braced for it before hand, and he easily ducked the sandal that was thrown at his head.

Sasuke was tired by the time they'd reached the little town. It had been a good six or seven hours travel since they'd left Konoha, and they'd been going pretty fast at that. Naruto had been happy to run through the forest again, and had kept pointing out little things to Sasuke, things that had changed since he'd last been out here. Sasuke couldn't blame him. Naruto had been cooped up in the village for more than a year now, after all. Watching the Uchiha upon his return had been the first real mission Naruto had been given since returning with Sakura.
Still, even with their fast pace- even out of practice like he was, Naruto was still a shinobi after all, and though he wasn't nearly as fast as he once was he was still faster than Sasuke had expected -Naruto had been distracted into little detours ever hour or so. It was starting to get dark now, and Sasuke was ready to drop into bed as soon as he saw the lights of the town in the distance.
They'd picked this particular town on the recommendation of Tsunade herself, the woman had apparently spent a good bit of time here before she'd stepped up to her current position as Hokage. She had told them- well, she'd told Naruto, she had pretty much ignored the Uchiha, which he didn't mind one bit -that it was the perfect mix of small hot springs town and resort. They also did a fair amount of business with shinobi, but not enough to be exclusive.
Naruto was bouncing beside him as they passed through the little gates, the guards sitting in the watchtower smiling down at them, and returning the blond's overly excited wave. They were almost immediately spilled into a vast open market, with stalls on all sides, most of them lit dimly in the gathering gloom of the evening, the brightly colored awnings and tents of the merchants and food stalls giving it the atmosphere of a carnival. It seemed like the blond wanted to look everywhere at once, his face lit up like a child at a festival, like he'd never been out of the village before- though Sasuke thought that maybe he hadn't, when one discounted missions, where there was a specific task at hand and thus no time to really see the sights or anything -and the energy of that was a little contagious.
He grabbed Naruto's wrist though, half out of a desire not to lose the boy in the crowds milling around, half out of a desire to just touch him, and share in the experience. It wasn't like he'd done much of this sort of thing as a child anyways, so if Naruto got to relive childhood here why shouldn't he? He knew it would make Naruto all the happier to share that enjoyment, that was just how the blond worked. What it did was break the spell, and suddenly Naruto was standing still again, smiling sheepishly, his free hand coming up to rub idly at the back of his neck.
"We should probably get to the inn, huh? You think they'll have rooms and stuff still?" Sasuke repressed the urge to sigh, suddenly a lot more tired than he had been. Naruto's energy had been contagious, rising steadily the closer they'd gotten, and now he felt a little empty without it. He just nodded his head in confirmation, turning towards the other side of town.
As it turned out, there was more than one inn in the town, and while the first one they'd visited had indeed had no vacancies Sasuke had almost been glad of it. It wasn't at all like the inn he'd planned on. It's lobby had been dark and dingy, the hallway leading off to the dining area and bar had been long and in need of a good scrubbing. The bored looking girl behind the counter- once she'd stopped flirting with Sasuke enough to understand he was not interested in staying here anyways -had directed them to another one, further up into the mountain.
The darkness was falling more quickly around them then, though that could have been more from straying away from the lights of the shopping district and into lanes of well kept homes, and finally out into thickly packed trees broken up by well tended little gardens. They could see the gates of the little ryokan they were headed for clearly, but they only grew more impressive as they approached.
It was traditional, dark wood and stone making up a high wall, with a delicately painted sign advertising the rooms within, as well as dining and a hot spring. It was quiet, just far enough away from the village center to be peaceful but not far enough to be outside of the little town. He chanced a glance back at Naruto, their pace slowing a little more as they reached wall, and the gate that lay open in it's middle. He hadn't dared to look back before, his hand still grasped around a tanned wrist, but he could see quiet wonder on the blond's face, bright blue eyes wide and smiling. Even if nothing else came of this little trip, that alone would be enough.

Sasuke knew he should have been disgusted, frightened even. He watched with wide eyes as meat was rend from bone by impossibly sharp teeth, bits of gore and skin flying lightly in the air around them, settling on the table in front of him. Each bone and shell was sucked clean, until it's surface was gleaming and white, before it was tossed to the growing pile between them. Instead though, Sasuke just rolled his dark eyes before returning to his own plate, chopsticks in hand, picking small bits of greasy effluvia from his chest.
"Slow down, idiot. We're going to have to get new yukata after dinner at this rate." Naruto dropped the bone he was holding onto the pile, and one hand reached to rub the back of his neck, as a sheepish smile crossing his face. It died as soon as his hand touched his skin though, and it was replaced with a look of disgust at the slimy, sticky feeling of his fingers. Sasuke reached into his lap, hand just closing around his own napkin when he froze.
He'd glanced back up for a second, ready to hand over his own clean napkin to the blond, he was a clean eater after all and hadn't used it yet while Naruto's was lying crumpled and greasy on the table next to his plate. That's when he'd seen it. Naruto's long tanned fingers disappearing between those lips, and then that warm, wet tongue coming out to make sure none of those juices remained. Sasuke swallowed hard, his mouth suddenly dry and his pants suddenly just a little too tight. Sasuke hid the flustered surprise that was heating his cheeks with a little cough. The blond still seemed oblivious though, returning to his meal- diving in just as before, chopsticks forgotten on their rest above his plate -leaving Sasuke to sigh, and try to ignore it.
That proved much more difficult than it sounded though, the sound of slurping filled the otherwise silent room, and after nibbling down what was left of his sushi, Sasuke stood from the table with a sigh. He was thankful for the tight pants he'd kept on under the Yukata, something he knew Naruto hadn't thought to do which only made his own problem that much worse. Wide blue eyes blinked up at him as he stepped back from the table, the food in front of the blond forgotten for a moment in the face of the unspoken question, where are you going?
"I think I'm gonna go take a soak. I'm tired, it's been a long day." That seemed to appease Naruto, who quickly turned back to his plate with a small nod. The little suite of rooms they'd rented- well, to Sasuke it had been a "little suite of rooms," Naruto had been amazed at the size of it when they'd arrived, and had ran through each one of them calling out the features to Sasuke as he'd settled at the table to wait for their dinner -included a wood floored sitting room with windows overlooking the central garden on one side, with a large tatami room for eating and sleeping in the middle, a bathroom and separate toilet on one wall, and on the other was a changing room that led out to the little private hotspring that came with their room.
It was in that direction that he headed. He could have gone downstairs to the main baths, and he probably would have had them virtually all to himself at this hour on what was still a weeknight. He didn't want to go that far though, he just needed to step away. He stripped quickly in the changing room, what was left of his erection dying quickly as he stepped out into the cooling air of the night.
The shower was quick, mechanically cleaning himself under the lukewarm water of the small outdoor tap, before he sank into the heavenly warmth of the little tub itself. It was set into the rock, the pool surrounded by boulders cut to fit, raw stone rubbed soft by years of use and careful care. It was almost silent, the high walls that surrounded each of the private hotsprings shielded by rows of tall swaying bamboo and lush greenery. The only sound was the bubbling of water flowing through the pool, and the sounds of the forest outside. It was welcome respite to be sure.
Sasuke closed his eyes as the water washed over him. This particular onsen was known for it's calming, relaxing properties, and he didn't care if it was the effect of the water or the placebo effect or possibly even stepping away from his blond companion. All he cared about was the water easing some of the tension out of his muscles.
It seemed like only a few short minutes, but in reality it was probably far longer if the pruning of his fingers was any indication, before he heard the sound of banging in the little changing room. A short moment later the door to their room was hastily opened, and out stepped Naruto. Sasuke didn't have to open his eyes to tell that, the rhythm of the steps and the low thrum of relaxed chakra usage were familiar. The steps stopped though, stalling uncertainly on the little wooden porch that divided the changing room from the rock of the hotspring. They headed out to the water of the pool, and Sasuke cracked an eye.
"You're supposed to wash off in the shower first, idiot. You're all dirty, you'll get the water in here dirty." Naruto's nervous expression melted into a scowl as he stopped, turning on his heel to stomp back through the door. Sasuke felt the smirk rising on his face. "There's one out here. Imagine putting in a shower right where you need it, it's like they thought all this through or something, huh?" Naruto's eyes narrowed further as he turned on his heels again, muttering something under his breath.
The easy banter of insults between them was comfortable, and it let Sasuke relax a little more again, he hadn't even realized that the blond's arrival had caused him to tense again. That fact brought to his attention once again the point of the trip, the question he needed to ask Naruto, the question that had the potential to change everything they had. This would either destroy their friendship or pull them together. He sucked in a calming breath, trying not to think about the other realization that came to him now, the fact that Naruto- the man he wanted to father his children, the only person he'd ever been actually sexually attracted to -was naked a mere five feet away from him and, as the water from the shower cut out, he was about to be a whole lot closer.
Sasuke shifted in the water, moving as far away from the front of the tub as he could, flattening himself against the stone wall and the little bench carved along it under the water. Naruto splashed his way down into the tub ungracefully, but Sasuke still found the urge to close his eyes again uncontrollable. The only problem with that was, Naruto was still there when he closed his eyes, only he wasn't across the tub in the water, he was moving closer, blue eyes dark with mischief, seductive and breathtaking. He bit his lip harshly, trying to think of a way to control this. He could only think of one thing in that moment though, and he opened his eyes to assess the blond across the tub.
He watched Naruto, blonde hair darker than usual now that it was wet, though it still stood out in great messy spikes. He swallowed.
"How do you feel about Sakura?" The blond didn't move for a moment, and Sasuke thought maybe he hadn't heard him. He was just opening his mouth to repeat the question when one deep blue eye cracked open to regard him warily.
"What do you mean, Sasuke? She's the light of my life, the best thing that ever happened to me." He paused for a second, his face blank, before it set into steel before Sasuke's eyes. "You can't take her away from me, if that's what you were thinking. As far as Konoha is concerned she's my child, and I don't want any bad blood between us, but I swear to god I'll fight tooth and nail to keep her."
Sasuke was a little taken aback by the accusation. He would never dream of separating the blond from their child. He wasn't sure what he'd do with her on his own either. He knew Naruto would be much better at this parenting stuff than him. Even if he left, Sakura would stay with Naruto.
"Not what I meant, but good to know. I meant, how do you feel about having children? Is she a burden for you?" Naruto's response came almost instantaneously, quick and sharp from his mouth.
"No! How could you even think that? I would give up anything for her, I guess that's what parents do. I never had someone like that when I was little, before the academy and Iruka, so I guess being given the opportunity to give her everything I can, everything I never had, means a whole lot to me." Sasuke pondered this response, worrying his bottom lip lightly between his teeth.
"I... I want to have another one. Another kid I mean." He studied Naruto, watching as the blond tensed, blue eyes looking away from him pointedly, studying the lush plant life beyond him with an intensity that it really didn't deserve. The silence stretched between them for what seemed like forever, and Sasuke was about to speak again when Naruto started in.
"That's great, Sasuke. I mean, you wanted to revive your clan, right? That was your second dream? Ambition? Whatever. That's good for you. I'm sure Baachan could find you a surrogate, someone strong like Sakura was. The old Sakura I mean, not our Sakura. Not that our Sakura won't be strong, but I mean you couldn't have kids with her, she's out kid." Naruto was rambling, his tone one of forced happiness. Sasuke didn't like it, and he found his eyebrows furrowing. Naruto still wasn't looking at him though, his eyes fixed on the rippling water of the hotspring now, deep with some unreadable emotion.
"Unless... unless you have someone in mind already, in which case I'm sure she'll say yes. Any woman in the village would jump at the chance to bear your children..." He trailed off, which gave Sasuke the space to jump back in. This was the part of the conversation he'd been dreading. If this went badly, he could lose the tenuous bond he'd rebuilt between the two of them, and the less tenuous one he wanted to forge would be out of the question. His mouth was suddenly dry, and he wondered if he could just forget the whole thing for now. Maybe it would be better to do it later? But this had been the point of inviting Naruto out here, of dragging him away from the village, just the two of them. He wet his dry lips with his tongue, swallowing nervously.
"There is someone I have in mind actually..." Naruto's eyes twitched up to meet his, both of their gazes unsure, before darting away again. The blond smiled, but it wasn't the kind of smile Sasuke wanted to see on his face. Ever.
"That's great Sasuke. I mean it. Who is it, if you don't mind my asking? Have you asked her yet? Has she said yes? Who am I kidding, of course she sa-" Sasuke couldn't take the hollow tone. He took it as a good sign though, that Naruto was clearly upset about him having children with someone else. Hopefully it really was Sasuke the boy was thinking about, not Sakura, or whoever else this might hurt. He interrupted.
"No, I haven't asked them yet. And it isn't a her. If there's anything I learned from Sakura it was that it doesn't have to be a girl who carries a child. You did just fine carrying her, more than fine actually." Naruto stayed silent, though his eyes did come up to study Sasuke's face. Sasuke took a deep breath. He could do this. He locked his eyes onto Naruto's.
"I... I want it to be you."
He'd been expecting a lot of things. Noise, accusations, disgust. He'd been hoping for a lot of things too. Happiness, bubbling smiles, a yell of yes. What he got was silence and stillness. Naruto was frozen to the spot, eyes widening slightly, mouth halfway open. Sasuke swore under his breath, and it was his turn to look away uncomfortably now.
"I mean, we're already a family, so it wouldn't be too new. And we wouldn't have to break it up either. We could still all live together. And it just makes-" His nervous rambling was cut short as his lap was suddenly full, Naruto diving across the pool to hug him tightly, tanned face burrowing into his neck as the boy mumbled into his shoulder, a soft muffled chorus of yes, yes, yes.

The rest of the evening was quiet and calm, neither one sure exactly what to say as they climbed from the hotspring and toweled off, heading inside. The maid had come in already and cleared the table, not surprising after the amount of time they'd spent outside, and their futons were laid out on the floor, each one looking soft and inviting after the long day and their heavy conversation. They were laid out along one side of the room, separated by a small table, short enough that it was almost on the ground. It was laid out with a little carafe of water, with a cap that doubled as a cup, and the little remote for the lights, the air conditioner, and probably everything else in the room that could be adjusted.
Sasuke watched as Naruto crossed the room in front of him, heading to the sitting room where he'd left his bag. Sasuke had brought his own bag out when they'd arrived, and had neatly folded all of his clothing and placed it in the small closet, everything else he'd brought was in a series of small storage scrolls he'd stacked beside the clothing. He selected a pair of loose black pants, his family crest embroidered small at the front of the waistband, and white shirt that was at least two sizes too big for him. It was comfortable though, so he didn't care.
He'd stepped into his pants, and was just about to pull the shirt over his head when Naruto stepped back into the room. The blond was still only wearing a towel wrapped around his waist, and while Sasuke had pointedly avoided looking at all that perfectly tanned skin in the water- he'd had more important things to worry about then -and while they were walking back inside, now that he had seen it he couldn't tear his eyes away.
Naruto was lean, and while his time off active duty had robbed him of a great deal of the muscle definition he'd had before, he remained lithe and gorgeous, the softness of his figure somehow making it all the more enticing. He swallowed heavily as a drop of moisture from damp blond hair trickled down the side of his neck and across the planes of his chest, over his stomach, before being caught by the towel. The sound of a wide yawn broke him from his stupor.
"I didn't know that onsen could be so relaxing. That was a nice bath, warm and comfy. Can we do that again tomorrow, Sasuke?" The Uchiha felt himself smiling again, the tension that had built up in his shoulders and back over asking Naruto to have another child with him was gone now. He felt more relaxed than he had since he'd first seen Naruto and Sakura again, after he'd gotten out.
"You know, there's a little hotspring in the woods behind the main house in the Uchiha district. It's not as fancy as this, it's just regular spring water, but my mother always kept huge jars of medicinal bath salts out there. I could show you when we get back." Naruto's eyes went wide, and there was silence for a moment then. Sasuke felt some of that tension bleed back into his muscles. Had he said something wrong? Then the blond's face softened into a wide smile as he started to pull on his own pajamas.
"I think that's the first time I've heard you mention your parents without looking like you're either going to die or kill something." Sasuke realized that that was probably true. He'd thought about his mother, talked about her, without the well of pain and guilt in his heart threatening to swallow him. He felt the tension melt away again.
"Yeah, I guess you're right. Thank you."
