~~~~Itachi was exhausted. For reasons he couldn’t explain he kept getting glimpses of Mina from the past. He was mildly concerned that he was losing his mind, but since sanity hadn’t ever been an issue for him before, he wasn’t going to make it one now. He sat down behind a large rock and tried to take stock of his thoughts. It certainly wasn’t guilt that was bringing this up. Could it be regret? He prided himself on not regretting any decision he had ever made, but things would certainly have been different if he had been able to keep Mina on his side. She would have been a powerful ally. He shut his eyes and that is when he heard it. ‘Sasuke.’ It was in Mina’s voice though. Was this what was going on? Had she found out about Sasuke and now she was so angry she was projecting thoughts at Itachi from kilometers away? A shiver ran down his spine. He had made a mistake... possibly the biggest mistake of his life and he needed to act now if he was going to remain one step ahead in this game. He took off at a dead sprint toward the castle.
Naruto was still blushing as Mina plopped herself down on the couch. She looked troubled and Naruto knew this had to be a lot for her to handle. When she spoke her voice was calm and even, however, and he knew with out a doubt that all three siblings were masters of disguising their emotions when they needed to.
“Honestly, I’m not sure we have time for a plan. Itachi must have known there was a chance I would get this out of you, and if I were him, I would not leave Sasuke in the castle while you’re gone. I would move him. We may still have a chance though because I imagine Itachi would also think that it would take more than an evening for me to draw it out of you. I doubt he knows what an easy nut you are to crack. Remind me to never tell you any secrets!” She finished with a smirk.
“Hey! That’s not fair.” Naruto pouted.
“I know. I’m sorry. This isn’t the time for jokes. First let me get those restraints off of you and then we’ll head toward the castle. Maybe we can come up with a plan on the way.”
Naruto held his wrists together in front of him. As before a white swirl of lightening appeared in Mina’s palm and she moved it closer to Naruto. When she brought the ball of light to rest directly over his wrists he braced himself for whatever pain might follow, but instead the lightening just tickled his skin. It felt soft, like rabbit fur, and in moments both wristbands released and fell to the floor.
“Holy shit. That was awesome! Where did you learn to do that?”
“I was locked in so many rooms and closets as a child that I vowed to myself I would never get locked in anywhere again. I’m not sure exactly how I did it the first time, but since then it has proved useful.” Mina’s expression changed as Naruto’s bruises and cuts started to melt away.
“Ahhhh... I feel much better now.”
“Wow, now that was awesome! I wish the witch could help me do that! Unfortunately I can only use her chakra to do things that she herself could do. That’s why I was interested in studying you. If I could just figure out how to tap into her power to do my own stuff, I think I could kick Itachi’s ass from here to the moon. When this is all over, do you think you might help me?”
“When this is all over, I think you’ll have a hard time getting rid of me. You've known me for a day and you're the cloest thing to family that I've got.” Naruto smiled brightly at her and the ridiculousness of the situation made Mina laugh.
“Seriously, we have no time for this. C’mon, if we take to the trees we’ll make better time.”
With that they were out the door.
Sasuke was bored of pretending to sleep but he could feel Neji staring at him and he didn’t want to face what he’d said. Neji had been telling the truth. He hadn’t been completely right, because Sasuke didn’t think he would regret it if he and Neji had continued what they were doing, but Neji had been right about his intentions. Sasuke knew without a doubt that his friend was only trying to protect him and didn’t think he was “damaged goods.” He wasn’t even sure what had made him choose those words. Finally Sasuke opened his eyes and looked into the eyes of the older boy.
“I’m sorry. I had no right to go off on you like that. I didn’t hurt your wrist did I?”
“I’ll live. I’m glad to see you’re feeling better.”
“Yeah, I’m feeling better. I don’t know what got into me. I guess I was just ashamed and then to know that you knew, and then you not wanting to be with me. I don’t know...” Sasuke trailed off. It wasn’t easy for him to be so open with his emotions.
“It’s fine. Don’t worry about it. I’m just glad you seem more back to yourself. We need to rescue Naruto and get out of here.”
“I agree, but I’ve beat on every inch of this room. These stupid wristbands seem to be restricting my chakra, and this ankle chain has blades that cut into my ankle if I get too far from the wall.”
“I don’t think it has to do with being far from the wall. I think it has something to do with being far from the end of that chain. When Itachi brought me in here I felt the anklet tighten on me whenever he got a few steps ahead.”
“Do you think if we can knock it off the wall we can keep it close and we won’t get cut?”
“Well, that’s possible, but it’s also possible if we tamper with it it’s just going to cut off our feet.”
“That’s a chance I’m willing to take. We’re sitting ducks if we stay here.”
They both stood up and inspected the lock that held their ankle chains into place. Sure enough, there was what looked like a proximity detector hooked to the end of each of there chains. Neji inspected the devices carefully.
“I can’t believe I didn’t notice this before. It’s almost exactly the same thing they use on criminals who are on house arrest, just instead of alerting someone that we’re trying to escape, it slices us off at the ankle.”
“Nice. Do you think we can disarm it, or jam it, or hack it off the wall?” Sasuke was antsy. They were finally making some progress but he couldn’t shake the feeling that this was too little to late. He’d never considered himself to be clairvoyant but when ten seconds later the door swung open and Itachi was standing there glaring at them, Sasuke found himself wondering if maybe he could see into the future. This was exactly what he had expected.
“Trying to escape? That won’t be necessary. You’re coming with me.”
“You wanna bet?”
Sasuke looked at Neji. Between the two of them, they might have a chance, but still being hooked to the wall might pose a problem.
Itachi felt like a juggler he had seen at a circus once when he was a child. It was as if he had ten balls in the air and he wasn’t sure how he was going to catch them all. Somehow things had gotten so out of control and a part of him wanted to just turn around and run out the door, run out of the country, and start over. He was not used to failure, and this felt like he had failed. He still wasn’t certain, but he was fairly sure he had guessed correctly and Mina was on her way to come rescue Sasuke. He decided to use the same approach with his brother as he had used with Naruto. Their friendship was the most powerful thing he had to use against them.
“We don’t have time for this. Naruto has been taken. The girl who has taken him is a powerful witch and much like me, she’ll stop at nothing to release the Kyubbi and use his power for her own means. If she succeeds before I find him, you may be needed to try and bring him back around to himself. I know you’ve done it before. As much as I want his power for myself, if he falls under the witch’s spell everything I’ve ever worked for will be in vain.”
Sasuke looked at his brother like he had lost his mind.
“Why would I help you?” Sasuke growled. “Even if we save Naruto from her you’re just going to do the same thing to him. Do you think I care which evil person is using him? Unless you were going to let us go free, which I know you wouldn’t even if you promised it, I have no reason to help you.”
“You’re an idiot Sasuke. Do you think I would be coming to you for... help... if this wasn’t catastrophic. We aren’t talking about saving your friend. We’re talking about saving the world.”
“Since when have you ever cared about the world?”
“Regardless of what you think, I don’t want my life to end in some damn flood, or under the rubble of a mountain. You may not know it, but the nine-tailed demon in your friend has the power to release those things. If something isn’t done, we’re all fucked.”
“So when we find him, you just think I’m going to be like “Hey Naruto. Remember me?” and he’s just going to give up? It doesn’t work like that. Besides, I know what you’re doing. I’m gonna get my ass kicked trying to weaken him, and then when he’s weak you’re going to try to get control of him, and then the tsunami’s will still come but you’ll be the one controlling them. I’m not going to help you. You can’t trick me because I will never trust you.”
Itachi was surprised. His brother really was growing up. Hadn’t this been what he’d wanted? A Sasuke that had enough fight in him to possibly beat him in a battle? Unfortunately with all the unknown’s between Naruto and Mina, he didn’t have time to enjoy the anger radiating from his little brother. Right now they needed to leave. He pulled out a knife and before either Sasuke or Neji had seen the movement it stuck deep in Neji’s thigh.
“He’s staying here. If you try anything the next one will be stuck in his throat.”
Neji was stunned but managed to speak through the pain.
“Fight him Sasuke. Don’t worry about me.”
Sasuke looked pulled. If Itachi was taking him from the castle he had a better chance of escaping and rescuing Naruto, hopefully killing his brother in the process... he’d make a plan while they were on the move.
“No Neji. I’m going with him. I’m not going to help him, but if he’s going after Naruto, I want to be there too.” Sasuke turned to look at his older brother. “I don’t trust you, and if I get the chance I’m going to kill you. This is for Naruto.”
Itachi crossed the room and unhitched his brother from the wall. He chained Sasuke’s wrists together and pulled him toward the door.
“If you try to pull anything, you’re dead. You aren’t that useful.”
~~~~
Neji pulled the knife out of his leg and leaned back against the wall. They hadn’t even bothered to close the door. As soon as he could get his leg to stop bleeding he would go ahead with his plan to try and free himself. Someone needed to get back to Leaf Village to let the Hokage know what was going on. A few minutes passed and he heard a commotion coming from downstairs.
“Where your talents and the needs of the world meet, there lies your fate.” He didn’t know who was coming, but he had no doubt they were coming for him.

lalalal: I’m gonna be honest with you, I don’t know what this is going to be anymore. It started out as one thing and it’s turned into something completely different. At first I thought it would only have 8 chapters in total! I suppose NejiSasu isn’t entirely out of the question because this is looking like it’s going to be long and right now it seems like Naruto might like Mina. At least he likes the security he’s getting from Mina. I don’t know if that’s enough to win out over his feelings for Sasuke though. Would you suggest NejiSasu as a good pairing? I really want to bring Gaara into the story because he’s one of my very favorites, so as a spoiler... *said in a whisper* they’re all headed toward Sand.
Kyuubi-kun: I’m with you on feeling sorry for Mina. Since this is an AU Itachi is a bit out of character, but I’m doing that because I have a total soft spot for him. This isn’t going to be a tale of redemption, but I can say that I don’t want Itachi to be a totally unlikable character. What I want is to show what happens when someone who has always been in control starts to lose control.
