Author's note: I owe you guys two apologies. First of all, I apologise for taking so long with this chapter. In my attempt to clear my backlog, general shit in real life and with my preparations for my upcoming exams, I hadn't realised that it's already been more than a month since I updated this story. I didn't mean to leave you guys hanging for so long!
Secondly, I apologise for the short length of this chapter. Normally I aim for each chapter to be around 6K for this particular story, but after so many weeks, I decided it was better to give you something than to have you all waiting even longer. Especially after the cliffhanger I left you with. So many apologies for the delay and many apologies for the shorth length of this story, I hope you can forgive me! :/
Thanks to the following reviewer: Deandraquin (Thank you!)
Warnings: Some angst
I hope you'll like it! (Despite the short length *winces*)
Chapter 8
"I thought you wouldn't return before December," was all that Sasuke could think of to say.
It sounded so stupid, so idiotic even to his own ears, but it was all he could think of while panic rapidly started building up at the sight of his older brother casually seated on the couch, Naruto hovering uncomfortably next to it.
It used to be that the sight of his brother had never failed to calm him down. Even as a young child, all he had had to do was look at Itachi and an inexplicable sense of calmness would wash over him, instincts telling him that his brother would take care of everything. For years that had been the case.
If he had a less than excellent mark on one of his tests and he was disappointed in himself, Itachi was there to cheer him up and remind him that not having a hundred percent didn't mean he was a failure. When Fugaku had got mad at him for not living up to his impossible expectations, Itachi had always been ready to take him away from the house for a little while so he could cool down.
Itachi had never been disappointed in him, had never expected the impossible from him. He had always been at his side from the very second Sasuke had drawn his first breath as a baby.
Now, the sight of the older man calmly seated on the couch filled him with dread and a steadily growing sense of fear.
Because the gig was officially up and after today he might have very well lost the last piece of family he still had had left.
"I figured it's been quite some months since we last saw each other and decided it would make for a nice surprise if I visited you on your birthday," Itachi replied lightly. His legs were crossed and his folded hands rested on top of each other on his knee.
"I – don't think I ever told you where I lived," Sasuke said blankly, but his ears were filled with the loud beating of his heart, almost drowning out Itachi's answers.
He knew he hadn't told Itachi where he lived, because that would have led to a lot of awkward questions, ones he hadn't been ready to answer yet. Somehow, though, Itachi had managed to find him. How? Neither Fugaku nor Mikoto knew that he was living in an apartment and Itachi didn't even know Gaara, so he couldn't have asked him. How had he managed to discover where Sasuke lived?
"No, you didn't, which is something I only realised once my plane had already landed," Itachi smiled wryly. "I called mother and she ended up giving me the address of one of the university dorms – except you obviously don't live there, which is something I found out when I went there."
"So how did you find out where our apartment is?" Naruto asked confused; his eyes briefly flickering towards Sasuke.
"An old classmate of mine works in the administration of Sasuke's university," Itachi replied and rolled his shoulders. "So I asked him what your address was. I'm not going to lie, I didn't expect you to live in your own apartment already. Was the dorm not to your liking?"
"Something like that," Sasuke said slowly, still unwilling to admit to anything. He knew he was just delaying the inevitable by this point, but …
He didn't want to lose his big brother.
"You could have told me, you know," Itachi chided gently. His eyes sharpened just a tad, making Sasuke tense up. "How come mother wasn't aware of this? The scholarship doesn't cover your own apartment, right?"
Sasuke's mouth was dry, so dry, and something seemed to be stuck in his throat, making it impossible to respond. What could he say, though? What could he say to salvage whatever was left between them?
"Does it have something to do with the reason why you're living with Naruto-kun?" Itachi questioned knowingly, too knowingly, always too knowingly. Nothing got past the older man, literally nothing, so why had Sasuke ever thought he could keep up the ruse for a long time?
Itachi's gaze rested on Naruto for a couple of seconds, who refused to look back and instead rubbed his right arm, staring stubbornly down at the floor. "While we waited for you, we were talking for a bit," Itachi said out of the blue and leant back in the couch, resting one hand on the arm. "I asked him about his baby, but he wasn't very forthcoming about it. Not even about who the father is."
"Well, it's not like it's really your business, is it?" Naruto retorted, sulking, and glowered at him. "No offense, but you're not my family, so I don't see why I should tell you whose baby I'm - "
"He's having my baby," Sasuke cut him off; his ears positively ringing by now. "He's – we're having a baby together."
This was it now. No way back. The word was out, Itachi was smart enough to fill in the blanks for himself now. He now knew that Sasuke was gay and that he was in love with his best friend. He now knew that his little brother was expecting a baby and could most likely infer right now why Mikoto hadn't been very forthcoming with any news about Sasuke or why she had been wrong about the dorm.
Because it was obvious now that Sasuke had been kicked out. Itachi knew Fugaku just as well as Sasuke knew him and he would be able to guess that Sasuke living in an apartment instead of the dorm meant he had been honest about his sexuality, had outed himself to Fugaku and had been punished for it.
He now knew everything and this moment might very well be the last time Sasuke would see his brother ever again.
That thought hurt him a lot more than he ever thought it would.
But he didn't want to keep his relationship with Naruto a secret any longer anymore either. That wouldn't be fair to Naruto and it wouldn't be fair to himself. He wasn't ashamed of Naruto, of their relationship together, and he definitely wasn't ashamed of the baby they were going to have together. He would never be ashamed of them.
So while he appreciated that Naruto had offered him a way out of this, by keeping quiet about whose baby he was expecting, it needled at him that Naruto had thought he would even need to do that. He didn't need to feel like he was going to be kept a secret, because he wasn't one. Sasuke was proud to call himself Naruto's boyfriend and he was proud of the baby they were expecting.
He just wished that being himself didn't mean that he had to lose the last part of his family as well.
"I thought so," Itachi said quietly.
Naruto bit down on his lip so hard that even with the short distance between them, Sasuke could see how bloodless his lips were becoming.
Leaning forwards, Itachi said calmly, "Now why don't you tell me everything from the start? Please don't leave anything out now."
What was even the point in trying to keep things a secret anymore? He basically knew everything now.
Stuffing his hands into the pockets of his jeans to hide their trembling, Sasuke took a deep breath and, fixating his gaze on a spot right above Itachi's left shoulder, he started, "Not much to explain, really. Clearly I'm gay and in love with Naruto. We've been together since we're fourteen and a bit after our graduation we discovered that Naruto's pregnant."
He shrugged, his voice turning flat when he continued, "It was an accident, but we decided to keep the baby obviously. I was sick of keeping my relationship with him a secret, so around a week before university started I told them that I'm gay." He smiled bitterly and listlessly waved around the apartment. "That didn't go well exactly. He kicked me out, told me I'm no longer his son and she didn't go against him. We've been living here ever since. End of story."
Itachi frowned, his black eyes unreadable. "How are you both affording this apartment if they kicked you out?"
"With a job," Naruto said, oddly subdued. "I work at the local library and Sasuke works at a coffee shop after class."
"That can't be easy," Itachi remarked; his eyes still not giving away what he was really thinking.
"We manage," Naruto said clipped and crossed his arms on top of his stomach.
Holding Sasuke's gaze, Itachi asked softly, "Why didn't you tell me about this sooner?"
"Because I - " was terrified of how you were going to react, scared to lose my big brother. Afraid to lose one of the few people who have always been on my side, "didn't know how you were going to react and … I guess I wasn't ready to find out yet," Sasuke answered stiffly.
The deep sigh leaving Itachi sent Sasuke nearly running out of the room, suddenly feeling five years old again, just having accidentally dropped one of Itachi's primary school artworks and scared what his big brother was going to say.
Aside from Naruto, Itachi had been the only other person in his life who'd ever been capable of absolutely breaking Sasuke with just one single look, just one word, and he was terrified to find out what those words, those looks, would be now, now that Itachi knew his younger brother was gay and even expecting a kid on top of that while still being just a student. If there was a checklist for being a disappointment, no doubt Sasuke had checked off everything on that list now.
He'd already lost his parents – would he now lose his brother on top of that? All because he had fallen in love with a man?
He'd forgotten just how fast and quiet Itachi could be when he wanted.
One second the older man was still seated on the couch, staring him down, the next he was suddenly right in front of Sasuke as if he had materialised out of thin air. Right as Sasuke flinched and went to take a step back, not wanting to find out what Itachi's next move would be, Itachi shocked him by pulling him into a tight embrace; his arms like shackles around his frozen form as Itachi pressed him tightly against him.
"I wish you would have told me this sooner, otouto," Itachi murmured, one hand pressing Sasuke's face into his neck. "You know I'm on your side, right? It doesn't matter to me if you're gay or not. As long as you're happy, that's all that matters to me. You're still my little brother and that's never going to change. I'm proud of you, no matter what."
He wasn't going to cry, because it was stupid and inane to start crying about something that really should have been that simple. Itachi's words shouldn't hit him this hard, not when he should have expected to hear them from his big brother, the man he'd looked up to all his life, the brother he had always adored and had wished to be like.
They shouldn't, but they did, and before he could stop them, before he could lock them inside, tears started to spill over, wetting Itachi's neckline of his shirt, as he broke down in his brother's embrace.
Clutching him back just as hard, just like when he had been eight years old and had disappointed Fugaku for the first time and Itachi had been there to comfort him and told him he would always be proud of him.
Just like now.
Itachi stepped outside for a moment, having offered to make a dinner reservation at a restaurant to celebrate Sasuke's birthday properly. It gave the couple a chance to speak privately for the first time since Sasuke had arrived home.
He had just finished washing his face, glaring at the red puffiness still present around his eyes, when he caught Naruto's eyes through the mirror and he turned around. "Hey."
"Hey." Naruto nibbled on his lower lip, resting his shoulder against the doorjamb of the bathroom. "I'm sorry," he blurted out. "I didn't think to check the peephole when someone knocked on the door. I thought it was Takeyama-san from four doors down, because she'd been here earlier to talk about a barbecue they were going to have and I just thought she'd shown up again to talk about something else. If I had known it was Itachi, I wouldn't have - "
"Hey, it's okay, I'm not mad!" Sasuke insisted and stepped forwards, resting his hands on Naruto's hips. "It's not like you could have known he would show up out of the blue like that. I didn't even know he was coming over, I thought he would be overseas until at least December still."
"Still, I feel bad. I tried to keep his attention away from the baby, but he's like a bloodhound, I'd forgotten that," the blond said chagrined, clamping his hands around Sasuke's forearms.
"You could have told him, you know," Sasuke sighed and kissed his forehead. "I never want you to feel like you're a secret. I'm not ashamed of either you or our baby."
"I know, but this wasn't my secret to tell." Naruto shrugged. "It wasn't up to me to out you to your brother. Especially because you already had to out yourself to them because of the baby to start with, so …"
"I didn't have to do anything," Sasuke tsk'd and gently flicked Naruto's nose, making him wrinkle it. "You didn't force me to do anything, okay? I would have had to tell them sooner or later anyways, because I was about to ask you to marry me and that would - " He shut up as soon as his brain caught up to his mouth, but by then it was already too late.
Dismayed at his own big mouth, he watched Naruto abruptly pull back and stare at him with parted lips. "You were going to ask me to marry you?" he repeated stumped.
"This was not how I wanted you to find out," Sasuke said, annoyed at himself, and ran a hand through his hair frustrated. Why the hell had he run off his mouth like that? Stupid, so stupid.
"When were you going to ask me?" Naruto demanded; his eyes widening and his grip around Sasuke's left arm tightening. "You never told me about this before! When was this?"
"I was going to ask you on our graduation day," Sasuke admitted with a sigh, "before you know …"
"Before I was a stupid idiot who broke up with you," Naruto realised with a groan and smacked his forehead. "I can't believe it! I'm so stupid!"
"Hey, you're not a stupid idiot!"
Naruto pointed a finger at him almost accusingly and narrowed his eyes. "Oh no? Then please do tell me how you call someone fucking up their own marriage proposal by breaking up with you!"
"A selfless person who only wanted the best for me," Sasuke retorted instantly and drew him back in his arms. "But you've always been the best thing in my life."
Blue eyes blinked, becoming suspiciously wetter as Naruto cleared his throat and bumped his head gently against Sasuke's shoulder. "Stop being so goddamn sappy, you know I hate it when the hormones make me cry."
Sasuke smiled, cupping his belly with his right hand. "It's true, though. You've always been the best thing in my life and will always be that."
The blond peeked up at him and right as he opened his mouth, Itachi's voice rang through the apartment.
"Are you guys almost ready? We've got a reservation at six thirty, so we need to leave soon if you're up for it."
They stared at each other and then Naruto smiled, dipping his head.
"Yeah, we're coming," Sasuke called out and hummed surprised when Naruto pulled him into a short but deep kiss.
"We're going to talk about this proposal when we're back, okay? No way am I going to let this go now," Naruto grinned teasingly, but his eyes were soft and still filled with awe.
"Definitely," Sasuke promised, his chest warming, and they shared another quick kiss before they joined Itachi in the living room.
Ready to celebrate Sasuke's birthday together.
AN2: So yeah, I know this is short, but I hope it wasn't too bad at least. Next chapter will definitely be longer again, I promise.
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the next chapter! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
