Kakashi had to admit it, he preferred Shikamaru’s meeting methods to his own. The two ninjas laid back on the grassy hillside, enjoying the unusually warm winter day, staring up at the sky. “Are you sure about this, Shikamaru?”
The shadow ninja took a deep drag of his cigarette as he considered his next words carefully, “Not entirely. It’s still possible this is a trap. But my gut tells me, this is the way to go.”
Kakashi breathed deeply, the crisp feel of the cool air cleansing his soul. “I’ve lived too long to ignore a shinobi’s gut instincts. Mine has saved me too many times to count.”
Shikamaru nodded, “Hmmm… This information Ino picked up out of Yamagakure has to be from an insider. Someone high up in their organization let this leak or we wouldn’t know it. The only question is, did they leak it to mislead us, or is it a real plan? I suspect someone near the top doesn’t buy the whole “Our Yamakage is never wrong” pitch and wants to stop the war before it starts. Yamagakure stands to lose a lot going to war with the Land of Fire. Even with luck, they will lose if the plans Sakura obtained are any indication. I’ve looked at all the data we have on the Land of Mountains – every history, news report, and scrap of information I can get. It’s an unwinnable war for them. The only real clues as to why they are on this course come from Sakura’s reconnaissance and some old news stories. The feudal lord there passed away under mysterious circumstances about ten years ago and his title was passed to the Yamakage.”
Kakashi furrowed his brow, “So the Yamakage is also the feudal lord? Then he has unchecked power.”
Shikamaru nodded as he took another puff of his tobacco, “Yes. If you read between the lines in Sakura’s reports, it’s clear the society itself is off balance. The rank and file men in the militia are relying on prostitutes or each other for sex. They can’t afford to keep a wife and are required to live in barracks. Only the officers have such privileges. There are other quirks too; reports of rampant nepotism, the way everyone has pictures of the Yamakage. I suspect he’s working a cult of personality angle and may now actually believe his own lies about himself.”
Kakashi frowned, “Do you think that’s why Sakura stayed? That she has some sort of line on these disgruntled insiders?”
Shikamaru shrugged, “It’s impossible to say one way or the other. We can certainly hope she finds them. It could be the key to preventing a bloody and costly war.”
Kakashi nodded, “Very well then. I’ll dispatch ANBU units to watch over each of the free tailed beasts. Hopefully Gaara will loan us some of his people since we also must prepare for an invasion this spring. I’ll write to the Raikage personally, so he can keep Bee safe. I wish I hadn’t promised Naruto he could go after Sakura, but there’s no way he’d miss that mission.”
Shikamaru stretched his lazy bones as the meeting was wrapping up. “Don’t worry about Naruto. I’m sure he’ll be fine.”
Kakashi found himself stretching as well, “Naruto is emotionally attached to Sakura. Neither of them had siblings growing up and they are as close as any brother and sister you could meet. Naruto is strong, but if Sakura were in trouble… well, you know how he jumps in and thinks later. But I believe I have a solution for that particular issue.”

Naruto struggled to process everything Kakashi said. “So, you’re telling me that Yamakagure has Isobu and Shukaku? That they’ve sealed them into new jinchuriki? How… How is this possible?” The incredulous, effervescent blonde shut his eyes tightly, fighting back tears.
The Hokage leaned back in his chair, sighing. He knew the kyuubi would be upset, and Naruto was tied to him. “We don’t have all the details, Naruto. It is a violation of the peace treaty and an act of war. We also have reason to believe the other bijuu are at risk. I’ve already dispatched ANBU teams to all their last known locations to protect them. I’ve also personally written to the Raikage, so Bee is, or soon will be, aware of the situation as well.”
Naruto fixed his eyes on the silver haired ninja, sheer determination showing on his face, “Kakashi-sensei, you’re not going to keep me in the village, are you?”
He had to hand it to his old student, Naruto thought fast on his feet. “No. I already assigned you to the mission to Yamagakure. I know how important it is to you to bring Sakura back safely. Hopefully you’ll find her perfectly safe undercover, and your trip to the mountains will be uneventful. However, in the event she is not still tending bar when you get there, I want to make sure you don’t go off half-cocked and get yourself captured too. It is imperative that Kurama does not fall into their hands.”
Naruto’s eyes brightened at the prospect he’d still be on the mission. Of course, he’d go after Sakura without permission if Kakashi forced him to stay home, so perhaps his old sensei just knew him too well. “Yes, Kakashi-sensei. Of course. You can count on me.”
Kakashi nodded, “Thank you, Naruto. Under the circumstances, I’m going to add one more member to your squad.” He raised his voice slightly, “Tenzo!”
The wood user popped his head in the office door, “Yes, Hokage-sama?”
“Tenzo, come in. You are aware of the situation in Yamakagure, right?” Kakashi motioned his assistant to the chair next to Naruto.
The combination of Kakashi’s ever cool demeanor and the presence of one Uzumaki Naruto had the jounin slightly nervous. “Yes, sir. You know I process all the correspondence and file the paperwork.”
Naruto raised an eyebrow, sensing the orders before they were spoken, “Kakashi-sensei, you’re not seriously going to send Captain Yamato on the mission to baby sit me, are you?”
The Hokage took in the nervous looks of both the ninjas in front of him. “Of course not, Naruto.” Both men breathed a sigh of relief. “I’m sending Tenzo to lead the mission and to provide a bridge builder in case you need help getting home.” Both men tensed at his words. “Tenzo, you have two weeks to train with Sai, Naruto, and Hanabi. We’ll do a full mission briefing next Tuesday.”
Tenzo nodded, orders were orders. “Yes, Hokage-sama. As you wish.”
Naruto stood, “But Kakashi-sensei…”
Kakashi held a hand up, interrupting the presumptuous young man, “Naruto, I could keep you behind in Konoha if this is a problem for you.”
Naruto backpedaled, “There’s no problem at all Kakashi-sensei! Welcome to the team, Captain!” He clapped the stoic shinobi on the back. “Hey, we’re having ramen at Ichiraku’s tonight. You should join us.”
Tenzo sighed. Ramen. Great. “Thank you, Naruto, but I…”
Naruto smiled broadly, “We’ll see you at six o’clock.”
Kakashi chimed in, “I’m sure you’ll have fun. Thank you both; you’re dismissed.”
Naruto bounded out the door, followed by Tenzo, who shook his head slowly as he returned to his own desk.
