Sakura had a busy morning. She’d gotten past her headache (too much sake!), had some tea, cleaned her apartment, restocked her fridge and eaten a healthy lunch. But now there were several things on her mind. She’d seen Kakashi briefly at the ramen stand, but what she really needed now was his counsel. Plus, she knew he’d be proud of her for accomplishing her ‘mission’ during her mission.
She knocked at her old sensei’s apartment door. The copy nin came to the door holding an open Icha-Icha book. “Sakura. Please come in. To what do I owe this pleasure?” Sakura gave Kakashi a huge hug, then waltzed in, kicked off her shoes, and plopped down on his couch. “Please, make yourself at home.” He teased her lightly. “Seriously though, dear Sakura. What’s up?”
Sakura laid face down on the couch. “I don’t even know where to begin. It’s so much. I just. I need your advice. I can’t even… I don’t… I…” and then she was just crying.
Kakashi sighed. Good grief, he’d thought they’d passed this particular life stage when she was 14. Of course, he was there for that too. And he was also old enough to know that sometimes women just got emotional because they were women. Oh god, she’d better not be pregnant. She knew better. He took a deep breath and picked her up so he could sit next to her and let her cry on his shoulder. This much, he knew how to do. “Just let it out, Sakura. Bottled up emotions will only make your heart sick.” His kind words seemed only to intensify her weeping. He just sat and held her; this beautiful, strong, heart sick kunoichi who both delighted him and drove him mad in turns. He handed her a handkerchief and she blew her nose, the tears finally subsiding.
“Thanks, Kakashi-sensei.”
“Just Kakashi, is fine Sakura. I think we’ve discussed this more than once now?”
“Fine. Thanks, Kakashi. It’s hard to remember sometimes even if that’s not the nature of our relationship any more. I still, hell probably always will, think of you as a mentor though. And I really do need your advice.” She blew her nose again and looked up at the silver haired man.
Kakashi pulled his mask down and kissed her lightly on the forehead. “Of course, Sakura. You know I’d do anything for you.”
Sakura’s lip quivered. “That’s what he says too.”
Concerned that another round of tears was coming, Kakashi drew the pink haired woman into his arms and kissed the top of her head. “It’s okay.” He said, rubbing her back lightly.
Sakura brightened up, “Oh, but first I should tell you the good news.” She smiled slyly.
Damn, that woman’s moods could change faster than the wind in sand country. He was going to need alcohol later. “Oh?” He held his calm demeanor, though it was tougher with the mask off.
Sakura folded her knees under her on the couch and turned to face the older ninja. A Cheshire grin covered her face as she told him boldly, “I completed my mission with Neji.”
Kakashi smiled from ear to ear. Now it was his turn to give her a huge hug. He picked her up and swung her around the room. “Way to go Sakura!” She giggled as he set her down “Do I get to hear the details?”
“Of course! But I must swear you to secrecy.” Sparkled the young ninja.
“I’ll make tea.” Kakashi put on the tea kettle as Sakura shared the details of her seduction of Neji, and a bit of the interesting parts of the mission.
“So… You and Anko, huh?” Kakashi scratched his head.
“Yeah it’s just something about her. She’s soooo sensual. And when she tells you to do something, the command in her voice is just so freaking hot, you know?”
Kakashi had goosebumps at the flood of Anko memories. “Oh yes, ma’am. I know very well.”
Sakura took note of her old sensei’s intense reaction. “You love her.” She said stolidly.
Good grief, she’d said that like she said it’s raining outside or tomorrow is Sunday. How could she possibly know something like that? “Sakura… It’s complicated.”
Sakura shook her head. “I call bullshit. Come to think of it, when she said you two had been together, she brushed it off as just a fling… But her heart rate fluctuated in an odd way… I bet she’s in love with you too.”
Kakashi buried his head in his hands, “We are now completely off topic. Okay, so, you successfully seduced Neji and rocked his world. Anko taught you the girl on girl stuff and a taste of S&M. Why do you need my advice?”
Sakura sighed, sipping her tea and her mood became reflective and somewhat wistful. “Well, I had a really good heart to heart with Tsunade yesterday. You might have noticed we’d hit the sake some before the ramen stand yesterday?” Kakashi nodded, motioning for her to continue. “Anyway, she said something, and we talked about this truth. No one can betray you unless you trust them first.”
Kakashi lifted his head and considered his next words carefully. “Yes. That is true. But, if you never trust anyone for fear of betrayal, no one can ever really love you.”
Sakura replied, “Exactly. And we talked at length about ANBU. About how ANBU have to be seasoned in how to deal with betrayal. That the only way to get past it and know you can deal with it is for someone to care about you enough to be willing to betray you, knowing you might never trust them ever again.”
Kakashi nodded again, “That is the logical extension of the argument. I must admit, I’d never thought it through that far myself.”
Sakura sighed deeply, “So then surely you understand my conundrum. The inner conflict that is bringing me to tears at the drop of a hat. I just can’t figure out what to do with this… this… this… mess of mixed emotions.”
Kakashi leaned back in his chair, carefully observing his friend, occasional lover, and former student. “Oh my god, you are in love with Shino Aburame.”
The wind left Sakura’s lungs as though she’d been slapped in the face. “No…. No…. That can’t be it. I … I didn’t even mention his name.”
Kakashi pressed on, undeterred by Sakura’s mood swings. He wasn’t going to be soft on her now. “Oh yeah, it’s all fine and dandy for you to call me on my shit. Calling you on yours, kiddo. Calling you out on your shit. You are in love with Shino. Just admit the truth.”
Sakura was utterly speechless. Finally, a few words came to her, “so… that’s your best advice? Just admit the truth?”
“Yep.” Kakashi tipped his chair and grinned smugly. “well, unless there’s anything else, Sakura dear, I have an important errand to run. I’m afraid I’ve been putting it off too long already.”
Sakura stood up, “oh, of course, Kakashi. You’ve given me some food for thought. Thank you for the tea. And the shoulder. And … well, just thank you for being you.” She kissed him on the cheek, threw her shoes on and bounced out the door.
It really had been too long since he’d talked with Anko. They had much to discuss. But first he’d swing by the flower shop. Anko had a soft spot for flowers. And he’d be sure to pick the right ones.
