When Gai returned to find Kakashi gone he assumed that he'd left to avoid the doctor, but when Ibiki stopped by the next night looking for him Gai was far past alarmed.
"He's very ill," he said. "I've looked everywhere I can think of."
"This is serious," Ibiki said. "He might have had a psychotic break, or he could be suicidal. He was supposed to start treatment today."
Sakura was furious, and she paced in her office, insulting Kakashi's intelligence, maturity, and once his ancestry. She put out an alert, but the next morning no one had found him.
It was Kiba that suggested tracking him using dogs, but there was little way to do that in a city so full of smells, and on an old trail at that.
"We're assuming he stayed in Konoha," Shikamaru said. "This is so troublesome. Why did Sakura-sama and Kakashi-sensei decide to test us in this way?"
"I don't know," Hinata said, "but whoever finds Kakashi-sensei will be respected. He's very tricky."
They took Akamaru to the city gates, with no results.
"He wouldn't have used such an obvious path," Shikamaru said.
They had to search for hours before Akamaru sent up a tracking cry, and as they headed north they wondered how far Kakashi had gone.
"It's such a troublesome test," Shikamaru said.
"Yes, but Sakura-sama said she'll reward the team that finds him with as many high level missions as they want for a year," Hinata said. "It's been hard to get anything above B rank since the wars ended, and we need the money."
"Why don't you just ask your clan for money?" Kiba asked. "Are they still mad about Naruto?"
They topped a tall hill and stopped. Before the spread an ocean of green treetops that seemed unbroken almost to the horizon.
Akamaru looked up at Kiba and whined.
"You can't mean he went in there?" Kiba asked.
Akamaru yipped and whined.
"What should we do?" Hinata asked.
"We go in, of course," Kiba said.
"Kakashi is using strange methods this time," Shikamaru said. "I think there's more to this than there seems to be."
"Let's go!" Kiba said, but instead of running ahead as usual he walked slowly along a long, winding path that lead downward into a valley.
There was no clear way to know where the forest actually began, but the path grew thinner, and the trees seemed taller and denser. The air was thick and humid.
"Shouldn't we hear birds or something?" Hinata asked.
"It's too dense here," Shikamaru said. "Unless we come across a spirit or a visitor we probably won't see much living."
The path was obstructed by a wire that was stretched across it from two trees. The wire was old enough that the trees had grown around it, giving them an odd ring of growth. A rusted, metal sign hung from it. It said, "go back. Think of your family and those who love you."
They walked further along the trail, their steps muted by the leaves on the forest floor.
The remains of a campsite, long left by its unfortunate owner, still had a moldy backpack and shoes by it. They passed it by, and then they stopped at another sign on the trail. "Your life is a precious gift from your parents”
"Are you sure he went this way?" Kiba asked Akamaru.
Akamaru growled.
"Sorry!" Kiba said. "I didn't mean to insult your tracking ability."
"I don't like this," Hinata said. "I know Kakashi sensei is strange, but he wouldn't desecrate a sacred place for a test - would he?"
"No, he wouldn't," they heard behind him. When they turned they saw Kakashi standing on the trail with his hands on his hips. He was glaring at them. His clothes were muddy, and as the wind changed they all smelled a mixture of sweat and vomit.
"What are you idiots doing out here?" Kakashi said. "You need to leave now."
"We came looking for you," Kiba said. "Did we win?"
"Win what?" Kakashi asked. "You're in a very dangerous place. Go back and tell Sakura-sama that I know he's here, and not to send any more ninjas. Now go."
"Kakashi-sensei, you look ill," Hinata said. She pulled a box out of her pocket. "Let me at least treat you."
But Kakashi vanished into the silent trees.
"Find him Akamaru," Kiba said.
"No," Skikamaru said. "We need to go. I don't know what's happening, but this isn't a test. We need to report back immediately."
As they left the forest they put on all speed, and Shikamaru wouldn't stop to rest.
"Oy, Shikamaru," Kiba said. "We need to stop. Akamaru is tired."
Akamaru barked several times.
"I'm not tired," Kiba said, "but she needs to rest."
Akamaru growled at him.
"Rest if you want to," Shikamaru said. "There's only one reason anyone goes into the Sea of Trees, and if we don't bring one of his friends back I don't think he'll ever leave."
"But, he can't," Hinata said. "He's too strong."
"No one is too strong," Shikamaru said.
Sakura took the news well and dismissed them with her thanks. After they left she buzzed her secretary. "Summon Ibiki."
She pulled a bottle of sake from her desk along with a delicate jade cup. She poured a cup and threw it back, followed by another.
She put the sake away and pulled out the picture of Team 7. "Idiot Sensei," she said. "Please be alive."
Ibiki came promptly, as usual.
"A team found Kakashi in the Sea of Trees," she said.
Ibiki looked at the floor. "I failed him then. I never even considered that."
"He was alive when they left. Their medic said he looked ill but refused treatment and told them to leave."
"If he was alive when they found him there's still hope," Ibiki said. "It sounds like he's undecided."
"I'll make arrangements to leave as soon as possible," Sakura said. "I want you, Gai Sensei, and Shikamaru to go with me. If anyone can talk him down it will be Gai. They've always been close."
"You're too valuable to risk like this," Ibiki said. "With all due respect, Hokage-sama, your people need you."
"Those who abandon their friends are worse than trash," Sakura said. "I've followed your advice, Ibiki. I changed my look to be more adult so people would respect me. I've changed how I speak so I sound more authoritative. I can't do this though. Assemble the team. We leave in 1 hour."
Ibiki smiled. "Yes, Hokage-sama. And may I say it is a pleasure to serve under such a one as you."
Ibiki got exactly the panicked reaction from Gai that he feared.
"He's in the Sea of Trees?" Gai asked. "Why would he do that? I know he was having a hard time, but if he had just waited things would have gotten better."
"Don't talk like he's dead," Ibiki said. "He was seen in the forest alive, so there's hope. If we can get to him in time we might still be able to save him."
