Chapter 8. Attack
Seven months, seven long long months she had been pregnant now, and she just wanted it to be over. Her back ached, she never got a decent nights sleep because she had to get up to pee every half hour, none of her old clothes fit, and her feet were swollen, hell she couldn't even see her feet anymore. That wasn't even the worst of it, she couldn't take a bath unless Neji was there to help her out of the tub, showers were out of the question due to the fact that she had developed an irrational fear of falling in the shower ever since she found out she was pregnant. To top it all off she was sexually frustrated, it had been over a month now since Tsunade had forbidden her from having sex, even going as far as to threaten her with a chastity belt if she didn't comply. She couldn't for the life of her understand how Neji could stand it, that was a lie, she felt like a beached whale and looked like one too.
That's what led to the situation Neji found her in, as she sat in the bathtub bawling her eyes out. He knelt on the floor next to the tub, doing his best to comfort her as he tried to find out what had upset her. "Hikari what's wrong, won't you please talk to me?" He felt utterly useless, he felt like that a lot in the last few weeks as she became more and more emotional, not to mention irrational. Sometimes he just want to pull his hair out, he was not used to this feeling of not being in control.
"You find me disgusting, I'm hideous like this," she wailed.
"No Hikari, no, you're beautiful, you will always be beautiful to me, please don't cry. I hate to see you in tears." He helped her out of the tub and led her to bed. He held her as she cried, tracing circles on her back and showering her face with kisses. Eight more weeks he reminded himself, eight weeks at the most and they would get to hold their children in their arms, it was more than worth it.
Slowly her tears subsided, "I'm sorry," she sniffled, "I don't know what came over me."
"No need to apologize, I love you so much Hikari and I wouldn't change a thing in my life right now."
"I love you too Neji, I just want this all to be over."
"I know, but you're almost at the end now, just a few more weeks and you'll get to hold them in your arms and see their little faces. Just remember that, okay?"
She nodded against him as her stomach came alive at the sound of his soothing voice, the surface of her skin shifting as the twins moved within her. He caressed her belly with a small smile on his face, "you hear that Hiroshi, Megumi, just a few more weeks, you're almost there," he bent close to speak to them and kissed the swells.
Hikari found it incredibly endearing when he did that, spoke to them as if they were already there, and not using her bladder like a punching bag. They had discovered that the twins loved the sound of their father's voice, their movements would move in accordance to where he was situated when he spoke. He could start on one side and if he moved to the other they would follow. The only thing they liked more was when she sang.
He kissed her belly once more before drawing her into a kiss, "alright you two, we're off to see your great aunt Tsunade tomorrow, so be good and let your Mama sleep."
Hikari snorted, "fat chance of that, those not so gentle Hyuuga fists seem to think I make a great punching bag."
"That must be from your side then," he joked, "all that fire in your blood. Try and get some sleep." She nodded and turned her back to him so he could wrap his arm around her.
No more than five minutes after she laid down, she was squirming out if his grasp, needing to use the bathroom, it was going to be another one of those nights. Then tomorrow they had an appointment first thing in the morning with Tsunade and then it would be straight to work for both of them, training and missions for Neji's team of genin, and off to the academy to help Iruka teach and grading papers for Hikari.

She was covered in ink and blood and she felt amazing, exhilarated. She stood under the warm spray of the shower, mesmerized by the way the colors swirled together as they descended down the drain. She felt a pair of strong arms wrap around her pulling her close, she leaned into his touch as he cleansed the gore from her body. She let out a hiss of pain as his fingers brushed over a laceration that was still in the process of healing. Her hair maintained a rusty color even after she washed it.
He pushed her up against the wall devouring her mouth in a demanding kiss, she responded eagerly, tangling her hands in his long hair pulling him in closer as their tongues battled for dominance, he nipped at her bottom lip drawing a gasp from her before moving onto her neck, biting down to mark her.
She moaned against him, dragging her long nails down his back, nearly hard enough to draw blood, reaching his toned ass she pulled him flush against her, crashing their hips together, creating that wonderful friction they both craved.
He bowed his head to take her breast into it mouth, pinching the supple flesh between his teeth hard enough to break capillaries, sending blood rushing to the surface of the skin. She arched into his touch when he brought his fingers between her folds, circled her clit once gently before pressing down firmly and pinching it between his thumb and index finger forcing her to cry out in pleasure.
"’Tachi, p-please" she moaned pitifully, begging him to take her.
Using one arm he hoisted her off her feet, trapping her between himself and the rough face of the faux waterfall, as he immersed himself in her heat. She clung tightly to him as he rammed into with such speed and force that she saw stars, her crest rapidly approaching. He came hard and fast filling her to the brim and pushing her past the point of no return, calling out his name as waves of sheer pleasure washed over her.
He lowered her to her feet, his now limp member slipping out of her, supporting her weight. Rinsing the evidence of their intimacy from their bodies he led her to bed. She curled around him, covered in love bites and bruises, from the jagged surface of the wall, resting her head on his chest she was overcome by sleep.

Hikari and Neji were once again sitting in the exam room waiting on Tsunade, Hikari was becoming increasingly frustrated. She was fairly sure her Aunt lived to torture her, they were having a fetal assessment done today, meaning she once again would be subjected to an ultrasound and her bladder felt closer and closer to bursting with each passing minute.
She let loose a very inhuman growl when the door finally opened to admit, not Tsunade, but Shizune, "where's Aunt Tsunade, she better not be cancelling on us."
"Relax Hikari, Lady Tsunade had a very important meeting to attend this morning, so I will be doing your fetal assessment today," Shizune explained.
Hikari grumbled in annoyance but took her place on the table and waited for her to begin. "If she knew she would be in a meeting why didn't she just schedule us for later in the day? Now we're both going to be late for work," she complained.
"The meeting was unexpected, now relax and let me concentrate, I will try to get you out of here as soon as possible.
"They seem to be doing well, they are already in the head down position, and judging by their measurements I would put little Hiroshi at about four pounds and Megumi seems to be about three and a half."
"Still so small?" Neji asked, the concern evident in his voice.
Shizune offered them a comforting smile, "actually that's a good size for twins, they're only expected to gain another pound and a half more. You're doing great Hikari, but you need to be extra cautious now, now that they've dropped you could go into labor at anytime.
"Have you experienced any false labor pains yet?" Hikari shook her head. "That's alright, some never do, just remember if you begin to experience contractions make sure you time them. If they begin to get stronger and closer together you should come in no matter what time it is. Same goes if there's any bleeding or if your water breaks. Do you have everything ready at home?"
"Yes, I have a bag all packed and ready to go for the hospital, and Kira finished painting last week, you should see what she's done it's amazing. Oh and we had the furniture delivered yesterday."
"Tsunade will be happy to hear that, she wants you to have someone with you at all times from now until you go into labor just incase."
"You mean a medic? All the time?"
"No don't misunderstand, just someone who could fetch help if needed, when you're at work you're surrounded by people, and when you're home with Neji that's enough, but if you decide to go out anywhere and Neji isn't available you should find someone to accompany you, it's only a precaution."
They nodded their acceptance, each understanding the importance of this request, Shizune dismissed them and Neji walked Hikari to the academy, his team of genin waited for them there.
"Good morning Neji-sensei, Hikari-sensei," the trio bowed to them.
"Good morning, Hisoka, Daisuke, Emiko," Neji greeted them each in turn, "my apologies for running late this morning. Are you three ready to get to work?"
"Yes sensei," they chorused.
"I'll see you after work," he told Hikari as he kissed her cheek.
"Alright have a good day, and stay out of trouble you three," she said playfully and made her way into the academy.
She found her classroom and knocked on the door before entering, "sorry Iruka, they were running late at the hospital today."
"Not a problem Hikari, the kids are just having a quiz today then I've arranged to them to witness a sparring match after lunch, so we'll head to the training grounds. How did your check-up go?" he asked as she took a seat next to his desk.
"It went well, Shizune says it could be any day now," a few heads popped up in excitement at her statement.
"Back to work, this will count towards your final grade," Iruka warned them. He turned back to Hikari, "I'm glad to hear that, though we'll miss you around here when you have to leave. I don't think I've had a more demanding class since Naruto's."
"I have a feeling that's somewhat my fault," Hikari said with a smile, many of the children showed a great deal of interest when it came to her pregnancy, always full of questions and wanting to feel the babies kick.
~*~
Tsunade massaged her temples in frustration, "you're completely sure about this Orochimaru?"
"Unfortunately yes, the intel is very reliable, we have a month at the most to prepare for the attack, they are going to hit hard, I worry about the number of casualties, but I worry more about their targets. It might be best to send them away from the village."
Tsunade scowled at the very thought, if Naruto caught wind of what was coming there was no way he would agree to leave the village, and even if they were able to keep it quiet he would feel betrayed after the fact. Kira was another matter, she knew Itachi would support the choice to move her but if the Akatsuki were already planning a large scale attack, there was a good chance they would be watching the village to see if their targets left and then attack them in a scenario where they would not have the backing of the village. She told her companions as much.
"I could take Naruto to Mount Myoboku to learn the Sage technique," Jiraiya offered. "With the way he is I imagine it would take a long time for him to even come close to mastering it enough to even use in a fight, and if they are watching the village they won't even see him leave."
"Make it happen, Kira might just have to stay here, I really don't see another option for her, it would be more dangerous for her to go than to remain."
"What about Hikari, I would rather her not be anywhere near here when the attack happens, and I doubt either of you want her around either," Jiraiya pointed out. "Could she go with you to the Sound."
"Not in her condition," Tsunade told them, "It's inadvisable for her to travel at all right now, and if we send her away we would lose Neji and I would have to send a medic with them as well, neither are things we can sacrifice if they hit as hard as you say. We will put her in the catacombs behind the Hokage monument along with the rest of the civilians and the children."
"You think they will hold up?" Orochimaru asked.
"They held up twenty years ago for the nine-tails attack they'll hold up now," Tsunade said with forced confidence. "Do you know who they are sending?"
"Their supposed leader Pain and his partner, a woman named Konan."
Jiraiya's eyes widened in surprise, "you don't mean?"
"One and the same, and after speaking with Itachi we have come to expect that there maybe someone else pulling the Akatsuki's strings, though as of yet we aren't sure who."
"Alright, Jiraiya you will take Naruto to Mount Myoboku and stay with him, leave Kosuke behind just incase we need to contact you. Once Naruto is out of the village I will have a meeting with you Orochimaru as well as Kakashi, Shikamaru, and Itachi to devise a plan of defense as well as a counter attack. I will also reach out to the Kazekage, with the impending marriage between him and Hinata Hyuuga he has an invested interest in how this will all turn out as well, we can hope for some support from Suna's shinobi forces as well."
~*~
It had been three weeks since Orochimaru had delivered the news of the impending Akatsuki attack and they had been working tirelessly to prepare for it. Today they were holding their final meeting to iron out the fine points.
"Break it down for me Shikamaru what do you have?"
"Everyone has been informed of what is expected of them and are ready to move into position at a moments notice. We have inspected the catacombs and they have been reinforced and stocked with supplies."
"What of our major players?" Tsunade turned to Jiraiya first.
"Naruto has excelled at sage training, more so than I ever expected, he has mastered it more than myself, he can still refine it further so I can drag it out a bit longer to keep him out of the way."
"Good, return to him then," Jiraiya nodded and took his leave, "Itachi what do you have planned?"
"They will expect me to stay next to Kira's side so they will be seeking me as much as her. Instead I will partner with Sai who will henge into Kira, he has helped her perfect her technique beyond even what he is capable of, but with their similar fighting styles he is the best choice. Kira herself has made the decision not to use a henge, though I do not agree, I understand her choice and support it. Sasuke with henge into me and stay at her side. Kakashi has also agreed to pose as myself and accompany one of Kira's shadow clones."
"Gaara?"
"I have prepared a team of long range fighters to join your ranks, Temari and Kankuro will join them. I will personally stay close to the real Kira but stay out of sight, to provide back up should something happen to Sasuke."
"Orochimaru?"
"I will stay at your side to provide protection so that you can administer medical aid with Katsuyu. I have ordered Kabuto to stay at Hikari's side no matter what happens."
"Alright, I have instructed the medics to disperse themselves evenly throughout the village, as well I will have Katsuyu out in force, I will send one into the catacombs with Hikari and Iruka to keep them abreast of what is going on in the village, there will also be two teams of medics inside the hospital one led by Sakura and the other by Shizune, they will see to any wounds that can not be treated in the field. Shikamaru make sure each division is made aware of this."
"Yes Tsunade-sama."
Everyone left except for Orochimaru, "I have a bad feeling about this," she told him.
"So do I Tsunade, so do I."
~*~
Hikari groaned in pain, she reached behind her to rub her back as she watched the students sparring in pairs, with blunt weapons.
"Are you alright?" Iruka asked her, she had been rubbing her back a lot today and it hadn't escaped his notice.
"I'm fine, just some false labor pains, they have been coming and going all day, but they haven't gotten any worse so I'm sure it's nothing."
"You only have another four weeks to go now right?"
"Yeah, unless they decide to come sooner," she said with a smile.
The first blast shook the foundations of the village, several students dropped their weapons in shock while others glanced around nervously trying to find the source.
"Drop everything, let's make our way to the catacombs, hurry now," Iruka ordered. He kept his voice firm but calm not wanting to cause a panic.
They grouped together Hikari in the lead with Iruka bringing up the rear.
Kabuto met up with them on the way, one of Katsuyu's clones perched on his shoulder, carrying Hikari's hospital go bag as well as his own medical supplies should the worst happen. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," she assured him, "is this it?"
Kabuto nodded, "everyone is moving into position now."
They reached the opening to the tunnels that would lead them to the chambers where the civilian villagers and younger students would gather until the battle was over. They convened in one of the rooms with the rest of the academy pupils. Some of first-years huddled in small groups, the fear evident on their small faces. Over the next hour their numbers decreased as their parents and older siblings, if they weren't involved in the battle, came to collect them. Soon they were down to just a handful of students, the room filled with a heavy silence, broken only occasionally by Katsuyu's voice as she relayed the names of those fallen in battle.
Hikari breathed deeply trying to keep her nerves under control, she wanted to know what was going on, it wasn't in her nature to just sit there when something of this magnitude was occurring. Still she struggled to keep calm, lest she cause panic with the children still in her care, her only consolation right now was that she had not heard the names of those close to her, but that could change at any second. She began to sing, hoping to calm not only her own nerves but those of the remaining children as well.
I don't wanna be another wave in the ocean
I am a rock, not just another grain of sand I wanna be the one you run to when you need a shoulder
I ain't a soldier but I'm here to take a stand because we can
She's in the kitchen starin' out the window
So tired of livin' life in black and white
Right now she's missin' those technicolour kisses
When he turns down the lights
But lately feelin' like a broken promise
In the mirror starin' down his doubt
There's only one thing in this world that he'd know
He said forever and he'll never let her down
I don't wanna be another wave in the ocean
I am a rock, not just another grain of sand
I wanna be the one you run to when you need a shoulder
I ain't a soldier but I'm here to take a stand because we can
Eatin' takeout on a coffee table
Paper dishes, pour a glass of wine
Turn down the sound and move a little closer
And for the moment everything is alright
I don't wanna be another wave in the ocean
I am a rock, not just another grain of sand I wanna be the one you run to when you need a shoulder
I ain't a soldier but I'm here to take a stand
Because we can, our love can move a mountain
We can, if you believe in we
We can, just wrap your arms around me
We can, we can
I don't wanna be another wave in the ocean
I am a rock, not just another grain of sand Wanna be the one you run to when you need a shoulder
I ain't a soldier but I'm here to take a stand
Because we can
I don't wanna be another wave in the ocean
I am a rock, not just another grain of sand I wanna be the one you run to when you need a shoulder
I ain't a soldier but I'm here to take a stand
Because we can
Our love can move a mountain
We can, if you believe in we
We can, just wrap your arms around me
We can, we can
Because we can

"Spread out, find the Jinchuriki, kill anyone who stands in your way."
The village was in chaos, the enemy's numbers were overwhelming, "Hinata-sama behind you!" Neji yelled as he spotted a giant rhino charging her way. No sooner had the words left his mouth that four large lions boxed the beast in tearing open its throat. But not before the rhino managed run one through with its deadly horn, splattering black ink everywhere, effectively shifting the remaining enemies' focus upwards.
Snakes rained from the sky as they plunged off the side of a giant bird carrying Kira and Itachi. Another bird appeared in the sky in hot pursuit of the now retreating pair. The imitation was unable to outrun the real thing as the three legged avian beast dive attacked the two shinobi. Itachi grabbed a hold of Kira and leapt from their bird before it could make contact. They tucked and rolled to a stop on a rooftop.
A multi-headed dog rampaged through the street trampling anyone and anything in it path, Kiba followed close behind on the back of Akamaru.
The bird dropped an egg on the rooftop Kira and Itachi had landed on, exploding on contact. The two were only shielded by the use of Susanoo. The beast continued to circle them dropping more egg bombs demolitioning the surrounding area. A portion of the roof collapsed taking Kira with it, her body crushed in the rubble. In death the henge lost it's effect revealing Sai's broken body, Itachi released his Amaterasu into the sky engulfing the bird in black flames. In its last fatal attack it soared towards Itachi at the precise moment that His eyes faltered, leaving him vulnerable.
~*~
"Itachi and Sai have fallen," Katsuyu relayed to each of her clones.
Hikari's breath hitched slightly as she exchanged a look with Iruka and Kabuto. Rapid footsteps were heard in the corridor, Kabuto and Iruka took a defensive stance putting themselves between Hikari, the children and the doorway.
Three young shinobi burst into the room, they scanned the space quickly, their gaze settling on Hikari.
"Hikari-sensei, we've been searching for you everywhere, Neji-sensei sent us to stay with you," Daisuke announced.
The two men relaxed their postures as Hikari beckoned the three genin to join her, Emiko embraced her former sensei, the normally smiling girl had tears running down her face. Hikari recalled hearing the girl's father's name being spoken by Katsuyu a short while ago.
~*~
Itachi and Kira were under assault by two enemies, he did his best to shield her and attack at the same time, performing a multitude of jutsus at an alarming rate. Reinforcements arrived on the scene, together they were able to take one out, Itachi was still trying to figure the other one out, it seemed he could both repel attacks and draw an enemy in at will. But that was an impossible feat to pull off continuously, there had to be a cool off period, no matter how small. If he could just pinpoint it he could make his move.
Until then he remained on the defensive, saving his chakra for when he could do the most damage.
The blast threw Kira back, her body impaled on an exposed piece of rebar. The shadow clone disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Itachi called out to Choji ordering him to get to Tsunade and relay what they had been able to learn from this Pain, he used his sharingan to cover Choji allowing him to retreat. It was too much, he didn't have enough chakra left to hold the henge, he had no chakra left at all. Kakashi dropped to the ground exhausted, his heart slowing to stop.
~*~
"Kakashi has fallen," Katsuyu announced sadly.
Hikari couldn't hold back the gasp that escaped her, he bowed her head, a single tear fell from her eye. She looked to Iruka, he too had his head bowed, his whole body trembled so subtly she could barely see it. She instinctively held Emiko closer, taking as much comfort from the girl's presence as she gave.
~*~
"Give us the girl," the man demanded of Itachi.
"You can't have her," he ground out.
They stood in the shadow of her creations, blood red dragons circled overhead, taking out any enemy that dared approach. Itachi engaged in battle with the man in front of him, always cautious of leaving her open for an attack as she scribbled furiously on the scroll before her, no sooner was one finished that she was onto the next, the most extravagant and vicious beasts her mind could conjure coming alive before their eyes.
Itachi froze seemingly paralyzed after the man managed to grab him, "where is the nine-tailed brat?"
Itachi refused to answer, Kira watched in horror as his body went limp reverting back to the his original appearance, the man tossed Sasuke's body aside like a rag doll.
Kira let loose a gut wrenching scream, her body shook with tremors. The man advanced towards her but she found herself encased in sand as she fell apart. She could feel Matatabi's power welling up inside her, the chakra broke loose sheathing her body in a blue glow. She emerged from the sand, her eyes glowed dangerously, one green one yellow, she bared her teeth at the man in a feral grin. Raising her wrist to her mouth she tore open her veins, spilling her blood at her feet. She disappeared from sight as a pit of blood red vipers rose around her, she had been using her blood as a medium making her creations stronger, faster, more visceral in nature.
Another man appeared at his side, a barrier surrounded him as he approached the nest of snakes. The dragons swooped down on him, they disappeared on contact with the barrier. Gaara threw everything he had as him, his sand falling to the ground harmlessly before it could make contact. Her tried to use it to get Kira out of there but she was so out of control that her chakra clashed with his own. They continued to advance on her as he slowly dissolved her defences, draining her chakra until she collapsed to the ground unconscious. The man that killed Sasuke heaved her unconscious form over her shoulder as they made their retreat.
~*~
"Sasuke is gone, they have Kira." Katsuyu informed them.
Hikari reached for Kabuto, squeezing his hand. She struggled to keep her breathing under control.
He knelt at her side, allowed her to cling to him. "You must stay calm Hikari, I know it's hard but you must stay calm."
A blast ten times larger than anything they had yet experienced shook the mountain, debris fell from above showering them with small bits of rock. Kabuto did his best to shield Hikari, not knowing how much damage had been done to the foundation. Hikari looked to Katsuyu, hoping for some sort of explanation, but she was nowhere to be seen. Her eyes dilated in panic, Katsuyu was gone, which meant Aunt Tsunade could no longer maintain the summon.
She struggled out of Kabuto's grasp and bolted out of the room, running as fast as she could manage for the exit. She felt trapped, she couldn't breathe she needed to get out, she needed to see the village, had to know what was happening.
Kabuto gave chase, Neji's team of genin hot on his heels, leaving Iruka behind to try and calm the handful of children still in his care.
He knew he had to get in front of her, it was the only way to stop her without risking her falling, he didn't have much time as he could see the light at the end of the tunnel growing brighter with their approach. He just barely managed to head her off before the mouth of the cave, he caught her in his arms. She gazed over his shoulder staring in horror as the dust began to settle, it was gone all of it, there was nothing left of the village, nothing left of her home.
Her legs gave out, forcing Kabuto to support her weight, she choked out a sob, "no, no, it can't be," she dissolved into tears.
~*~
He dug himself out of the rubble, taking in the damage that surrounded him, the whole village had been leveled. He activated his Byakugan and surveyed the devastation looking for other survivors. He spotted Hinata a few yards away and rushed to dig her out. "Hinata-sama are you okay?"
"Neji," she coughed out, "what happened?"
"I'm not sure, everything has been destroyed."
"The villagers?!" she asked in shock.
Neji's head snapped around to look at the Hokage monument, the rock face remained but the path leading to the catacombs was gone, inside he could see several cave-ins but most of the catacombs seemed to have held up but there were too many chakra signatures to discern who was who.
"Go Neji, I'll start looking for survivors, make sure everyone is okay up there?" By everyone she really meant Hikari, they both knew it but neither were willing to speak the words out loud. He nodded once before taking off at high speed towards the monument, scaling the mountain to reach the opening.
She couldn't look away, her eyes continued to dart around rapidly hoping for any sign of life, something was blocking her view, she couldn't see, she had to see, she blinked the tears from her eyes in an attempt to focus on what was in front of her, "N-neji," she choked out, she fought against Kabuto's hold, trying to get to him.
"Hikari," he couldn't help the tears that blurred his vision as he took her from Kabuto, he held her tightly, as if afraid his eyes we were playing tricks on him. He pulled away just enough to look at her making sure she wasn't hurt.
"What's going on, what happened to everyone else? Aunt Tsunade, Uncle Orochi, Ino, Shikamaru? Where are they, are they okay?" She fired questions at him rapidly.
Neji shook his head sadly, "I don't know, Hinata, she's alright, she's looking for survivors now, I had to get to you, had to know you were okay."
"We need to get you away from the opening, it's not safe here," Kabuto gently urged them to get moving.
Neji helped Hikari to her feet, keeping an arm around her waist, Kabuto flanking her other side, as they follow the three genin back to cavern that held Iruka and the academy students.
Hikari doubled over in pain, clutching as her belly as she cried out, "what's wrong?" he looked to Kabuto for an answer.
"We need to get back, I need to examine her." He turned to the three teens in front of him, "go on ahead, find a futon, blankets, pillows, anything soft that we can lay her on. Talk to Iruka asked him for the two bags I brought with me. What are you waiting for go!" They nodded and rushed off to do his bidding.
Neji scooped her up into his arms, cradling her against his chest as she moaned out in pain, "something's wrong," she cried.
"Breathe Hikari, you need to breath, keep calm, that's very important right now, you must stay calm," Kabuto advised her.
When they returned to the room Hisoka and Daisuke had just finished laying out a futon for her, Emiko knelt at the foot with Kabuto's medical bag sorting out an array of supplies.
"Neji put her down there, Iruka you should find somewhere else for the children to go right now, is there anyone else with medical training of any kind? I don't care if it with medical jutsus or how much training they've had, I need someone who knows the basics of the human body, can keep a straight head and follow my directions."
"I'm not sure I'll go check," he motioned for the children to follow him, as he left to find help.
"Okay. Hikari I need you to relax, I need to check you internally," he helped her to remove her pants and underwear, draping a thin sheet over her to afford her a small bit of privacy, effectively hiding his anxiety when he saw blood and a lot of it.
Neji sat behind her trying his best to ease her pain. He whispered calming words in her ear, telling her everything thing would be alright, she was going to be fine. Iruka burst back into the room, Hanabi in tow. He had to give his cousin credit, she didn't even bat an eye at the sight before her, just approached Kabuto and asked him what he wanted her to do.
Kabuto barely spared her a glance as he completed the internal exam, "she's only three centimeters dilated, how much do you know about childbirth?"
"A little that I've read in books," she answered calmly.
"Good enough, use your dojutsu, focus on her uterus, tell me what you see."
"I can see the babies, something looks wrong, one is attached to the wall of the womb, the other isn't."
"Shit," he whispered under his breath.
"What does that mean?" Neji demanded.
Kabuto didn't even look at him as he spoke, keeping his focus on Hikari, "Neji I understand your frustration but you need to stay calm as well, if you lose you cool you will only make things worse and I will have to ask you to leave the room. Now what has happened is called placental abruption, it's when the placenta detaches from the uterine wall before labor begins. It most likely tore open the uterine wall when the placenta detached, that's what's causing the bleeding.
"Hanabi the one that is no longer connected? Where is that child located?"
"He sitting further up than the other child."
"Does either child seem to be in distress at the moment?"
"No they seem to be doing okay."
"Okay don't take your eyes off them, tell me if anything changes, no matter how small. Okay Hikari I am going to force your body into active labor, there's no time for an epidural so you're going to have this the old fashioned way. So take a deep breath, this is going to hurt."
She drew her breath in shakily. Nodding to him, he pushed his chakra into her forcing her cervix dilate and sent her into the pains of full labor.
Hikari screamed in agony, "breathe Hikari you need to breathe, take a deep breath with me," Neji tried to get her to follow the breathing exercises Tsunade had shown them.
"That's good Hikari, now I need to push as hard as you can, bare down and push." She let out a bloodcurdling scream, "good, just like that again, push." He felt her water break, the first child was making her way through the birth canal."
It went on for hours, she held on to Neji for dear life, loving him and cursing him in the same breath, she crushed his hand breaking several fingers, still he didn't try to pull away, not when she needed him, he saw Hanabi whisper something to Kabuto and the man quick redoubled his efforts.
"Almost there, I can see the head just one more big push you can do this."
She did as she was told, grasping Neji's hand, her voice hoarse from screaming so much, then a brief feeling of relief, the tension in the room broken by the cry of the small infant in his arms. He handed her off to Hanabi, "can you take care of the umbilical cord then hand her off to Iruka, we're not out of the woods yet, we still have one more to go."
Hanabi worked quickly, swaddling the newborn in a blanket and handing her off to Iruka before returning to her place at Kabuto's side, a quick scan confirmed their worst fears, "his chakra signature, it's still there but it's fading," she said in a low voice meant only for the experienced medic.
"Neji sit her up for me, I need to see her back. Hikari," he addressed her gently,
"I'm going to have to paralyze you from the waist down, temporarily. I have to do an emergency cesarean." Hikari nodded her understanding, "I need you to hold perfectly still, we only have one chance at this, now take a deep breath." He jammed a senbon, with a paralytic tip into her spine, he pinched her thigh roughly. "Can you feel that?"
"No, please Kabuto, please save him."
"Neji you need to lie her down flat, Hanabi hand me that scalpel, I want you to take this marker and trace the outline of the baby so I know where not to cut, quickly now." He made his first cut, slicing through skin and muscle, layer by layer until he reached her uterus, he finished opening her up and reached inside, extracting the child from within, still surrounded by his amniotic sac, Kabuto cut it away, the child made no sound, his lips tinged blue, but there was still a heartbeat, faint but still there. He looked back and forth between mother and son, one would not make it and it was on his shoulders to make the choice.
"Please Kabuto you have to save him!" She wailed.
"I'll take him, give him here," Sakura and Ino had just rushed into the room.
He had never been so happy to see the pink haired kunoichi as he handed the infant off to her, returning to Hikari where Ino was already working hard to stop the bleeding. Hikari kept her eyes on Sakura as she worked, she was slowly losing her battle with consciousness, she had lost too much blood, but she needed to know her son would be okay.
The faint cry rang out in a room that was otherwise silent, "Hiroshi, thank goodness," those were her last words before succumbing to the darkness.
