Chapter 8 Sesshomaru hit the off switch on his alarm mere seconds after it started beeping. Six in the morning, time to get up. He quickly rose from his bed and dressed. Forgoing his normal business attire, he pulled on a pair of well fitting blue jeans, and a button up black shirt, which set his hair off nicely. He had many errands to run today and felt like going casual. He made his way to the kitchen and prepared a simple breakfast of a toasted plain bagel and orange juice, taking it with him as he sat on his large, plush couch and turned on the morning news. The stories on the television were much like they were every morning. Some company being sued, the president’s dog is sick, big mess up in last night’s football game, and of course, some kitty was saved from a horrible circumstance. It was the same crap every morning. They might as well just have the news on a continuous loop. All it was missing today was the daily murder… “Looks like we have breaking news, Julie,” said the young newscaster with way to fluffy brown hair sitting with a young blonde behind a curved desk. “That’s right, Rick,” continued the blonde girl, “We just received a report that an Officer Brown from the LAPD was found dead in his home this morning. Police aren’t releasing details at this moment, but it is rumored that he received a fetal gunshot wound to the head.” “Wow, Julie, that’s amazing. Detective Brown makes the sixth police officer to be murdered this month, and the third this week alone. Do they know if there is any connection?” Sesshomaru turned off the TV and grabbed the phone. He dialed one of the few numbers he ever bothered to memorize and waited for an answer. “Hello.” The voice on the other side of the line was strong and regal. Sesshomaru knew right away the person he wished to speak with had answered. “Father, have you seen the news this morning?” “Oh, well hello, my son. I was beginning to think you had abandoned your father. Are you well? I do hope so,” Taisho asked his son, avoiding the seriousness of the call, and decided to act like this was a normal ‘son calling his father’ conversation. “Stop it. Brown is dead.” Sesshomaru was in no mood to play along with his father’s pleasantries today. This series of dead cops was becoming a problem. Especially since most the police that had died, were ones working for the Yakuzas. “Yes.” Taisho tone suddenly matched his son’s, “I saw it. I’m calling together a meeting tonight. Be there at seven.” “Understood.” Sesshomaru hung up the phone and gather up his keys and wallet. He pulled on his shoes and slipped his Beretta into it’s ankle holster. He still wanted to get things done before his day turned into all business. He went to his garage and stared longingly at the empty space the would have normally been occupied by his Ferrari. His prized car was now sitting in some tow yard waiting for his insurance agent to come total it. That left three other choices, filling the remaining bays in the garage. His black Cadillac, which he only used for ‘business,’ a large blue Ford truck, which he only owned because at some point he’d felt it necessary for every man to own a truck, and hidden behind the Ford was his motorcycle. He hadn’t ridden the bike in quite a while. It was a 2002 Suzuki Hayabusa, with a pearlescent silver paint job. Sesshomaru had once used the bike as his main transportation, but long ago gave it up for the comfort of a car. He smirked slightly at his old bike, and grabbed the helmet hanging off the handle bars. Why, not? He jumped on the bike, strapped on the helmet, waited for the door to finish opening, fired the bike up, and took off towards town. ****************************** Sesshomaru sped up The Canyon, not to his own home, but to Yagami Estates. The morning had go smoothly. He went shopping for a replacement pair of shoes, and had picked up a new watch as well. Everything was fine until he was almost finished at the Verizon store. He picked out the newest PDA phone and had finished activating it when the young man behind the counter asked Sesshomaru if he wanted to transfer his contact list to the new phone. It was at that moment he realized that though he’d been clear headed enough to grab the microchip from his phone, he wasn’t coherent enough to remember it was still in his shirt pocket when he left it in her truck. Now he was flying at reckless speeds up the curvy hillside, hoping to catch Hinata at home. Not soon enough he found himself stopping at the beginning of the estate’s long driveway, surveying the situation. The modern style home was set deeply back from the road, like many of the houses here. Unlike Sesshomaru’s flat, this house was several stories tall, and look very much in order. All the decorations and plants had carefully planned and maintained, lined up in rows and color coordinated. Sesshomaru made sure his plants where trimmed and cared for, but let them have the freedom to crawl and grow where they pleased. Here everything seemed so controlled and all creativity stifled. In front of the house were several cars, only two which he knew belonged there, a dark grey Lexus, and a blue pickup. The other two cars were ones that he recognized, but didn’t really know. Black Crown Victorians, had to be some type of government agents. Whatever was going on down there, it was better that he stayed out of it. His shirt would just have to wait. ********************************* The doorbell chimed, and Hinata quickly made he way to the front door. She cautiously cracked it open and peered out at the visitors on the porch. Slightly relieved when she recognized the four men as former co-workers of Light’s, she opened the door a little bit more. “Miss Hyyuga,” the smaller built man, that stood out from the rest, was the first to speak. “Is Light available?” “Hmmm. I don’t…” Hinata looked behind her, searching for Light, hoping for direction and unsure of what she should do. They didn’t have many guest that weren’t announced before their arrival. Even though Light knew these people, she wasn’t sure he wanted to speak with them. “Please, go check,” the taller man requested. “Ahh, yeah, ok. Please wait.” With that she shut the door and quickly made her way up the first flight of stairs. She tightly gripped the handrail feeling uneasy since she had already fell down these stairs, twice. She took the first hall and stopped at the door leading to Light’s study. She knocked just loud enough to be heard, but not so much that it you startle him. “What is it?” He sounded annoyed, already upset about the intrusion. Fear crept over her. She knew better then to disturb him while he was working, and almost decided it would be best to ask the visitors to leave, rather then further press Light. On the other hand, sending them away might also piss him off even more. “I am so sorry, but you have visitors.” She was careful to keep her tone as quiet and mellow as possible, hoping it would rub off on him. “It is those men you used to work with at the FBI.” The door opened and Light looked slightly stunned. “I see. Show them to the sitting room and make some coffee. I’ll be right down.” “Oh, okay.” Hinata nodded as the door re-shut leaving her with his orders. ************************ Light took his time preparing to meet his company. They were already settled with coffee by the time he made it to the sitting room. Three of the four men sat quietly, while the fourth was busily bouncing around, inspecting the grandly decorated room. Mustuda was the first to greet Light, running to meet him as he entered the room. “Light, wow man, you sure do have a lot of great stuff here.” He waved his arm over the room filled with fine artwork from painting to vases. “Thank you. Though I cannot take the credit for being to one collect them. That I owe to my grandfather,“ Light said the young man, He was impressed that Mustuda’s eyes were still so full of life and energy. He never seemed to loss his innocence’s. Light’s gaze quickly surveyed the rest of his guests. Asuma sat with his arms folded, on the far end of the couch. He looked a bit more worse for wear then Light remembered. His deep brown hair tasseled, suit wrinkled, and he chewed at an unlit cigarette. He hadn’t even looked up to greet Light as he enter, just scowled a bit at the ground. Guess he’s still upset that Light left the group to move back to California and join the LAPD. Unlike Asuma, Jin looked up and gave a little nod from the other side of the couch. He, on the other hand, hadn’t changed much. His was as spic and span as ever, suit well ironed, long black hair pulled tightly back into a tight pony tail, and his eyes unwavering as he peer over his glasses. And of course, Ryuuzaki managed to make himself a bit too comfortable in Light’s favorite chair. His shoes were nowhere to be seen as he crouch in his favorite thinking position. He was the only one not wearing a suit, instead going with a white t-shirt and blue jeans which complemented his unruly black hair well. He looked more like a nerdy virginal teenager rather then the impressive detective that he was. “Oh Light, nice of you to join us.” Ryuuzaki never broke his eyes away from the coffee in his hands, slowly stirring it, trying to dissolve a mound on sugar in the bottom of the cup. “I am sorry about your wait, but if you had called ahead, I would have made sure I was ready.” Light tried to make himself sound slightly annoyed, hoping to get an apology for the unannounced visit, but knowing it wouldn’t come. “We were in the neighborhood.” The pale man shrugged and tested his drink. Making a revolted face he bent over to the coffee table and started spooning more sugar in the cup. “Well is this only a social call?” Light knew that it wasn’t, but he choose to play dumb and wait for the others to let out the details. He wasn’t sure all of what they knew and didn’t want to back himself into a corner. “You bet your ass it isn’t,” Asuma grumped as he looked up, red faced and pissed. “We’ve been sent down here because all of your teammates are dropping like flies. So tell me Light, why in the world…” “Please, Asuma,” Jin held up his arm, breaking the death glare that Asuma was shooting Light. “We are just hoping to get some leads from you Light. That is if you don’t mind?” “So the FBI is finally involved? I was wondering what was taking so long. I would be happy to help in whichever way possible. Though I am not on the crew in charge of the investigation of the deceased police.” He tried to give his best sympathetic smile. “Fuck this.” Asuma got up and stomped his way past Light, not even offering a passing glance. “If you need me I’ll be outside.” A few moments later the front door slammed and the tension started to die down. “Damn, sorry about that. He just hasn’t been the same this last year, not since Kurenai left.” Mustuda laid a comforting hand on Light’s shoulder and motioned for them to join the others on the couch, which they did. Light hadn’t even gotten a chance to get himself situated before the interrogation began, with Ryuuzaki leading the pack. “Have you heard of the deaths?” “Of course.” “I see. Did you know any that were killed” “Yes.” “So, are you still in the task force set up to gather evidence against the Yakuza?” “Yes.” Light did his best to keep his answers short. “So, why is it you’re doing that again?” Ryuuzaki gulped down his coffee and placed it on the table, where the seemingly invisible Hinata came from the woodwork, quickly refilled it before returned to leaning against the wall. Leave it to Ryuuzaki to ask open ended questions. He wasn’t going to put up with the Yes and No answers today. “Because that is what my father would want.” “Your father is dead.” “I am completely aware of the state of my father.” Light took a deep sigh, trying hard not to let the other get to him. “It is the responsibility of a son to carry out their fathers wishes. He wanted to bring the Yakuzas down, and that’s what I’ll do.” Light shot a look pure innocence to the other, trying to force a halo to appear over his head. “Of course.” Ryuuzaki slipped from his cup while rubbing his toes together childishly. “So are you not worried about dying? It seems that most of the officers that have been murdered were ones that had some sort of connection with the Yakuza’s. I wouldn’t be surprised, that with a little digging, I could prove a connection with every one of the officers to the mafia.” “What sort of connection are you hitting at?” Light made sure not to flinch or break eye contact. He knew exactly what cues agents were turned to look for, had he didn’t want to appear dishonest. “Surely someone with your intelligences and skills would have noticed that several of the dead are on the take? The only deceased one that I have deduced to be loyal to the force, was your partner, Mogi.” “Mogi and I knew there was moles in the department. We had just intended to use them to our advantage to gather the evidence we needed.” “Hmmm, interesting. That doesn’t seems like Mogi to use people, even bad cops.” Ryuuzaki stare deeply at Light searching for something. “I think we should pick this up tomorrow at the precinct. I will need exact details to come to a conclusion.” “ That sounds more productive then this. Will 9am work?” Light stood, followed quickly by the other three men. “That will do.” Ryuuzaki fumbled under the coffee table and located a ragged pair of tennis which he sipped into without socks, then stood up, leading the way to the door. Light escorted his former teammates to the door, and exchanged brief good-byes. He stood in the doorway as he watched the two Lincolns drive off. Not until the cars were out of sight did he shut the door. Hinata closed in on him, slightly rubbing his shoulders, and leaned in, “Is everything alright?” “Fine.” Light stepped out of her reach and headed for the steps leading to his bedroom. This was the trickiest part of the game. The one piece capable of ruining his plans had just made it’s way onto the game board. If he made one wrong move, it surely wouldn’t go unnoticed, but he had a plan. This was perfect. *********************** Sesshomaru pull up to the curb under the softy lit sign and handed off his keys to the valet. Rogue Room. This was lounge that Sesshomaru’s family had been frequenting for as long as he could remember. His family and the original owners were long time friends and were close until they had returned home to Italy, leaving the Rogue Room in the care of the nephew. The lounge had served their family well in all matters from personal to business, with a relaxed lounge and restaurant on the main floor, a upscale hotel above, and a discrete casino in the lower level, known only to the regulars. At first the family was apprehensive when the young man named Sai look over business, but it had turned out good. Sai had done well for the place. The service and food was more pleasant, and the building was now better up kept and he ensured that he did everything possible to keep privacy for his patrons. He opted to hold down the position of a bartender, claiming he could keep a better eye on the whole operation being at the heart of his lounge. Sesshomaru had even come to enjoy the young man company. Sai knew just when it was appropriate to hold a light conversation and knew when to keep silent. He was never overbearing and bothersome, and they shared the similar personality trait of not being particularly passionate about anything. Which made for perfect un-stimulating conversations. The daylight had just about faded away and the cool Fall air blew through his hair, Sesshomaru opened the large oak door and entered the dimly lit foyer. The pungent smell of cigars whirled throughout, and the lyrical sound of a piano floated in the air. He handed his grey overcoat to the young red haired girl working the in the coat check, reviling his shoulder holster. The girl didn’t even flinch at the sight of his gun, only blushed at him, as she did every time he came in. “Hello, and welcome. It’s has been while. I am glad to see you back.” She folded his coat over her arm and brushed a few stay strands of hair behind her ear. “Yes. Has any of my party arrived yet?” He paid little attention to her obvious flirting. “No, I’m sorry I haven’t seen any of them.” She tore a ticket and handed it to him, making sure to lightly brush his fingers as he took it. “Good.” A smug sense of satisfaction came over him as the girl shivered slightly at the touch, before heading to the bar. “If you need anything, you know where to find me,” she called out after him, but he didn’t bother to acknowledge her. The room was almost empty, making sense considering it was still early. Sesshomaru took a seat at the middle suede stool overlooking the immaculate bar. Rows of high end bottles rested on oak shelves, and dark marble glistened under the mood lighting. Within seconds a young man with limp dark hair slide a napkin in front of Sesshomaru and placed a crystal glass filled with a dark liquid in it. He took the drink and nursed it gingerly before speaking. “They were here?” “Yes. They knew you came here. They knew your car. And they knew you family.” Sai grabbed a rag and polished the already shining brass lining the bar. “What did they want?” Sesshomaru put down his glass and listened, hoping for some clue as to why the kids from the other day attacked him. “They wanted to know where you lived. After a few minutes they gave up and left. I told them nothing.” He looked completely indifferent, not worried at all about what this mafia member would think, simply stating facts. “I know. Did they say why?” “Sorry, no.” Sai shock his head and shrugged. “They acted like juvenile idiots for awhile, broke my fish tank, then left.” He motioned towards the room’s entrance where a large salt water tank used to sit. “Shame. Lost most of the fish, and it was such a mess.” “Hmph. I shall make certain that they repay you for it.” “I’m sure you will.” Sai turned to a man approaching the bar and plastered on one of his fake smiles. “Hello, Sir. What can I get for you?” “I’ll have what his having.” A man in his mid 20s, with long black, braided hair, pointed at Sesshomaru’s and took the stool next to him. “Coming right up.” Sai quickly made the drink and placed it in front of the man. Bankotsu. He had been working directly under Sesshomaru for two months now. He had come in quite useful in following out his father’s orders. This man’s lack of respect for human life was just as void as Sesshomaru’s, willing to kill complete strangers for absolutely no reason what so ever. Most people didn’t have what it took to do this job. Most killers still needed some sort of a reason, which was not often offered. It made finding decent help difficult, to say the least. Even though this this man was of use, Sesshomaru didn’t trust him. There was something just not right in his smile. Something fake. Even faker then Sai’s. “Hello, Boss. Your father’s just got here. He asked me to tell you, room 315 in ten minutes.” Bankotsu grab the glass and swigged down the whiskey in one gulp, slamming the crystal onto the bar. He dropped a twenty next to it and flashed a smile at the bartender. “Understood,” was all Sesshomaru said, hoping that the other would take a hint and leave, which he did. After Bankotsu left, Sesshomaru finished his drink and place another twenty on the bar. “That’s not necessary.” Sai’s smile was once again nonexistent as he tried to refuse payment. Sesshomaru ignored the offer of a drink on the house and requested, “If you hear anything…” “I have your number.” Good, at least he understood that this was to remain only between them. No need to involve the rest of the family. They said nothing more. Sesshomaru left the bar area, and went to the elevator. He pressed number 3 and waited. Whenever the family held meeting, or stayed at the hotel, they would use the rooms on the third floor. The rooms were very comfortable and elegant. Several smaller meeting rooms were set up here, offering a perfect place to have an intimate gathering. He got off the elevator and followed down the brightly lit hall, well decorated in calming neutral tones and with many well known prints from various impressionists. He walked right into room 315, and stopped just short of the door. There was a few more people then he was expecting, namely one Light Yagami.
