The words filtered into Kakashi’s ears but it took a while for his brain to process them. He was alone. They had left him alone to go watch some entertaining civilian. His beatings for the past few days had been attended by fewer of his captors and there was already blood on the floor. He inhaled and exhaled slowly, ignoring the pain while forming his broken fingers into the seals for summoning jutsu and finally understanding why the smallest dog was always the pack leader - they took less chakra.
The small pug appeared with a pop and a small amount of smoke, “Boss, what the hell happened?” “Reinforcements. Well trained.” Kakashi explained keeping his voice as even as possible as he grunted instructions. “They’re gone. Bring food. Summon Bisuke. Find my things.” Pakkun muttered a quick affirmative and ran towards the kitchen. The last time he’d seen Kakashi his master was well fed and well rested. He’d summoned him and Bisuke to take the documents that he and the clone had discovered back to their dimension. It was difficult to gauge the passage of time between the two worlds so he wasn’t sure how long Kakashi had been in that condition. His nose confirmed there were no enemy ninja in the compound so he raced headlong to the kitchen. He had no idea how he was going to get food without opposable thumbs but he’d manage. After struggling with the refrigerator he summoned Uuhei. She was large and had a nice long tail. Several curse words later he’d managed to wrap her rear appendage around the refrigerator handle and pull it open. Once the food was delivered Uuhei was dismissed and Bisuke was called. He was more familiar with the hideout and they had to hurry before the other ninja returned. “Pakkun do you smell that?” The pug nodded. Uuhei had mentioned the same thing in the kitchen. The fortress contained the faint scent of another Konoha ninja. The scent grew stronger but still unidentifiable as they ascended the stairs. They found most of Kakashi’s belongings scattered in several rooms on the ground level floor. They went up another flight of stairs following the scent of sweat and paper to their master’s prized possession. They found the Icha Icha in a room whose decorations reminded Pakkun of Sakura. “It’s the teacher.” “What teacher?” Bisuke asked sniffing about before jumping on the bed. He pressed his nose to the pillow and answered his own question. “It smells like the ramen sensei whose scent was always on …..” “Shush. Someone’s coming,” Pakkun barked harshly. “Grab his stuff. Take it back to our place. I’ll let him know they are on the way back.” Kakashi was finishing the rice balls the ninken managed to retrieve when Pakkun reappeared. “They are on their way back. It’s a large number of them. You should have five minutes based on how fast the scent is getting stronger. There’s something else you should know. We detected the odor of another Konoha ninja.” Pakkun lifted his head and sniffed. His ears twitched to the left. “One of them is already back.” “Where’s my vest? It has chakra pills and blood replacement tablets.” Kakashi mumbled around the sticky rice. “Boss, I …” The pug’s eyes grew impossibly round as he whimpered. “I sent them back with Bisuke when I noticed someone was coming. Your things weren’t in one place and we couldn’t get them down the stairs without being caught. I can re-summon him.” “This is interesting,” Words mingled with laughter as a clear and all too familiar voice and footsteps echoed down the hall. “No time. You did the right thing,” Kakashi coughed reassuring his dog. “Sneak out the way you did last time and find him.” Pakkun licked his master’s face and scurried into one of the tunnels used by the rats. Kakashi rose slowly into a taijutsu stance. They had not killed him yet so he was willing to bet they needed him alive for some reason. Even if he couldn’t escape he had to buy enough time for Pakkun to escape safely and find the reinforcements. He prayed they were at least Anbu level. The woman on the other side of the door was clearly S-classed. “What do we have here? It looks like someone wasn’t properly restrained.” Kakashi turned sideways to face the woman behind and in front of him. He cursed silently. The bitch made a clone and teleported. “Don’t look so surprised. You’re not the only one with summoning contract.” The woman explained smiling sweetly holding up a small bleeding animal and catching Kakashi’s full attention. “Pakkun!” Kakashi yelled, rushing forward. He realized his error once the image of the woman stabbing his beloved ninken dissipated. He’d completely turned his back on the enemy. He heard the crackle of electricity an instant before the fire raced up his spine and short circuited his brain. “That should keep you out of trouble.” Tetsuryuu huffed withdrawing the lightning covered fist she’d slammed into her prisoner and moving her hand up to his neck. She carried him like a rag doll to the main room to wait for the others. Someone was going to be severely punished. She’d broken a nail restraining their prisoner. Pakkun ignored the rats and the flash of his master’s chakra as he sped through the tunnel. His master’s only hope of being saved depended on how fast he found the other Konoha ninja.Postal ninja were an anomaly. They pledged allegiance to no country only to their solemn duty to rapidly deliver mail to every citizen whether they were nobility, shinobi, civilian or criminal. They delivered without bias and kept the locations they’d where they made deliveries confidential so they were permitted to roam freely and unhindered. It was said the only thing to stop a battle during the great wars was the passing of postal ninja. It was in everyone’s best interest if they were allowed to continue their journeys. Three days after it was mailed, the day before the Lunar New Year’s Eve, Iruka’s letter reached his Mother. It didn’t take long to decode the letter. The Hokage was referred to as one parent. The enemy was referred to as the parent with the opposite gender. Inquires about the recipients of health indicated the necessary level of caution while the sender’s health was the status of the mission. Local landmarks were used to provide locations. Benevolent forces guiding or guarding them meant they were being monitored; evil forces meant they were suspected. Asking for the help of the Gods meant they needed backup. Praying for divine intervention meant they needed immediate extraction. Post scripts referred to third parties that could impact the mission. Dear Mother and Nee-chan, [Hokage-sama and Shizune,] I hope this letter finds you well.[There is reason to be concerned. Keep an eye on our borders] I am safe, but I haven’t been able to find the happiness I seek. [I’ve safely infiltrated the village, but haven’t heard from Kakashi] I’m not discouraged, just as fate delivered you to father’s side I’m sure one day the joy I seek will be obtained. [There are enemy ninja present. It’s possible he’s been captured but I don’t have definite confirmation.] The village of Giha was destroyed during the last ninja war but I’ve found the ruins to be a peaceful place. [I’m close to the ruins of Giha. There is no sign of enemy activity and it is close enough to be used as a rendezvous point] I can only see as it as my ancestors way of watching over me and telling me to find my own place in this world. [I’m being monitored, but have some freedom] Until that day comes I have to remain diligent. [I’ve been careful so far they don’t suspect anything] As Father always said “a happy home is the reward of patience and preparation.” [The enemies are planning something. I’m also making preparations]. How is the little one? [How are my students?] I hope he’s not giving you too much trouble now that I’m away. [Find a long term substitute. I don’t know when I’ll be back] If he is, just tell him the next time I see his scrawny little butt they’ll be hell to pay. [Tell them I said hello and will be back as soon as I can. Make note of the ones who are misbehaving. There will be hell to pay.] I’ll try to send more money next time. [I’ll send more information next time] I love you. Stay safe and be happy. [Be vigilant but don’t send reinforcements yet.] Rui-chan PS – I should have listened to the little princess and brought one of the kittens. I don’t have rats (yet) but company would make the time pass by more quickly. The friendly youngest one that was always underfoot would have been perfect. [The daimyo’s youngest daughter may be in danger. Her husband had me followed and was fishing for information.] Tsunade read the letter and cursed. “Shizune, get me a lottery ticket and Ibiki. Tell him to bring a map of the Akimoto offensive.” Tsunade propped her elbows on her desk and hoped old age was fogging her memory. Iruka said his ancestors were watching over him and specifically mentioned Giha. She and his mother had never been friends but respected each other as kunoichi. It was common knowledge among the ninja her age the woman was from Lightning. Most people did not know Tsunade caused the earthquake that destroyed Giha. After the war was over they’d had a friendly spar over the importance of childhood memories. “Hokage-sama,” Ibiki bowed and handed her the dusty battle plans. He watched the frown on her face deepen as she pulled the map from her robes and compared it to the ones he’d given her. “Kotetsu!” Tsunade waited the 30 seconds it took for her assistant to appear. “Get the file for Kakashi’s current mission and a standard issue map.” The man disappeared and reappeared with the items she requested as fast as he appeared. She had to hand it to Sandaime, he’d left her very speedy assistants. Ibiki watched as his leader compiled the information she’d requested “Hokage-sama, didn’t you send Iruka to that area?” “Yes. He hasn’t found Kakashi, but he’s been able to confirm the Hidden Cloud’s involvement and identify one of the nobles attempting to overthrow Princess Yukie.” “I see. Do we need to send an extraction team?” Ibiki asked mentally cataloguing the Anbu remaining in the village and who among them would be best to send on this mission. “Hokage-sama, I have your lottery ticket. I brought three and the newspaper just in case.” Shizune huffed. “Shizune, don’t worry about finding a medic trained in midwifery we can spare. Reply to the daimyo’s other request in the following manner: ‘Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your grandchild. Forgive my impertinence but as a medic I can not allow one of my subordinates to go to Snow Country and tend to your daughter. Shiko-hime has always been very slender and this is her first child. I feel as though it would be best if I personally saw to her. If this is acceptable I will make arrangements for a team of jounin to escort her to your palace. I realize it will be difficult for the newlyweds to be apart, but I want ensure her child is safely delivered. Snow is a very wonderful country but Konoha’s hospitals are the finest in all of the nations.’” Tsunade instructed pulling out a kunai to scratch off the tickets. Tsunade smiled after revealing all three tickets and checking the day’s winning numbers – four time loser. “No, Ibiki, sending the extraction team won’t be necessary. The interrogator chose his words carefully, “Hokage-sama, I mean no disrespect, but are you basing this decision on your lottery results?” “That and the fact Iruka said he didn’t need one.” Tsunade sighed. “Hokage-sama he is a chuunin. He has no experience in enemy territory. Getting involved with Cloud is outside the scope of his original mission.” Ibiki reasoned unaware of Iruka’s true lineage. “We should send in someone who is has the training to handle this.” Tsunade smiled at the vehemence in her subordinate’s tone. “I do appreciate the job you are doing and your dedication to our village and your comrades’ safety. I realize you would not have attained your position at such a young age if you trusted easily. After reading this letter, I am more convinced than ever Iruka is the only one who can do this” Ibiki easily caught the scroll his kage threw at him. “I said we are not sending an extraction team. I never said not to have one ready.” “Ibiki” Tsunade voice’s softened, “If you think he has no experience in enemy territory you try going into the Hyuuga compound and telling the clan head his favorite daughter will never make it as a shinobi unless she gets over her superiority complex. Have faith in him.”
