Hinata woke very early considering her previous night's activities. Unthinkingly, she sat up, pain flaring below. She bit back a gasp and held her hand to her stomach. After the pang subsided into a gentle throbbing, she gingerly moved again.
A blush tinted her cheeks and she looked down at the sleeping form of her lover. His sleeping form looked surprisingly peaceful. She wanted nothing more than to lean down and kiss her partner awake, coaxing him back on top of her and then -
Shaking her head, she forced herself to end the thought. In the light of day she could see the how dark the rings around Gaara's eyes were, how sunken and pale his face looked. The fact that he didn't stir with her movement was testament to how much he desperately needed the sleep he was getting. She seriously considered going back to sleep with him, but whatever last night was, it didn’t give her any answers about her fuzzy brain. After all, their mutual feelings were apparent last night but it was definitely her first time. Then there was the fact that she was in Suna but had no recollection of ever coming here.
Slipping out from under the covers, she retrieved her nightie and panties and returned the other room, closing but not locking the door behind her. It was clearly her guest room; her belongings were packed neatly into the dresser in the corner. She showered and dressed quickly, feeling the stiff kimono fabric slide over her inflamed skin. She was still incredibly sensitive from where Gaara had touched her – which was basically all over. Her cheeks burned at the memory and she let a soft groan escape her lips. Damn, was she always this sinfully uninhibited? Of course she knew it was only because of Gaara that she could feel this way. Once again, shaking off the urge to head back to bed she distracted herself with thoughts of finding out what happened to her. After a moment she calmed down only to flare again when she caught her reflection in a wall mirror as she reached for the door.
She recognised the black hair, the grey colour of her eyes and the kimono she'd sworn she just put on but the image that reflected back at her was not the plain girl she'd always thought of as Hinata. Instead a woman with a flushed erotic expression stared back at her. Her hair was glossy and full of volume, eyes held a depth of emotion she didn't know existed in herself and the curves under her formal wear seemed all the more pronounced. In all accounts she looked the part of a thoroughly satisfied woman.
Oh God! She thought, cringing. There was no way should could walk out of her room looking like that. The post coital glow was so obvious she may as well have walked out completely naked.
A soft knock at her door startled her.
"Hinata chan?" a familiar voice called.
The surprise from hearing the unexpected voice was all that Hinata needed to distract her from her current state and she yanked the door open to reveal the young pink haired medic.
"Haruno Sakura?!" Hinata squeaked.”You’re here?”
Was she in Konoha after all? The sandstone architecture was very much reminiscent of Suna but she could think of no other reason for the medical nin to be present in Suna.
"Of course, with your recent poisoning, it would be remiss of me not to check up on you," the emerald eyed girl sighed in relief. "I'm glad you woke up okay. In fact you look so much better than I expected. What do you remember?"
“Sakura, are we in Suna?” the Hyuuga asked, ignoring the pink haired girl’s question.
“Well, that answers more than it doesn’t. Yes, some things happened and you’ve been in a coma the last few days. I was summoned to help you but your memory was affected. So I’ll ask again, what is the last thing you remember?”
“Um, Tsunade sama gave me a mission in Suna? Something to do with Gaara kun? But I don’t remember coming to Suna even though I have a strange feeling that something bad has happened.”
Sakura nodded, but didn’t comment. After a moment she asked, “What about the memory before that?”
Hinata frowned, she wasn’t sure how it was relevant. It was the most recent events that she was hazy on. “Well before going to see Tsunade sama I met Shikamaru kun and Temari san. Since the Chuunin exam’s over for this year Shikamaru kun was selected to be an examiner for next year’s Chuunin exam and Temari san is Suna’s representative.”
The medical nin gave the heiress a concerned look. “Tsunade shishou gave you that mission over a month ago Hinata and this year’s Chuunin exam is next week…”
Hinata paled. She’d lost a whole year? Not just a month or so? “Before I bumped into Shikamaru kun and Temari, I saw Naruto kun leave on a training mission with Jiraya sama…”
“That was three years ago. Naruto’s back now, in fact I just got back from a mission with him,” Sakura said sadly. “The damage to your memory is more extensive than I’d imagined. I think…”
Hinata tuned the medic out. She suddenly felt very small in the world. Just how much of her memory had she lost? Would she ever recover it? Even being told exactly how much she’d lost didn’t make it feel real. Those sequence of events seemed to blend together seamlessly without any missing gaps in her mind. How could she not even remember that there was something missing? If they’d sent her back to Konoha and she’d woken up in her own bed would she have gotten up, packed and headed off to Suna as to start a mission she was already on?
“…ata? Hinata?” Sakura had been calling the girl for a while but Hinata was staring blankly at the ground.
“Y-yes!” Hinata cried, coming back to reality.
“I was just saying that maybe you should take a walk around Sunagakure. You’ve been traversing these streets for several weeks now, something could jog your memory.”
Nodding numbly, Hinata walked off leaving the other girl behind to look after her, more worried than ever.
At the bottom of the stairs, Hinata bumped into a man in councilmen robes.
“Hinata sama,” he cried joyously. “I’m so glad you’re alright!”
Hinata peered at the man. He had wavy black hair poking out of his turban, a weathered face and kind black eyes but she was certain she’d never met him before.
“Um… yes, thank you,” she said politely, bowing.
The man bowed back. “Actually I came to see you about business. Sorry to thrust you back into the fray like this, I know you’ve been through a lot but I was sent to tell you that all the preparations have been done and we should be able to start the new panel in a day or two. Thanks to you it came together faster than expected. Anyway, that’s all I wanted to tell you. Good day to you.”
The man was gone before Hinata could make head or tails of what he’d just told her. It sounded like she’d done something good at least.
Outside the sun glared down on her mercilessly but it wasn’t as bad as she’d expected. Her body was used to the heat; it was a clear indication of how long she’d been in Suna.
Everywhere she walked, people greeted her with familiarity and genuine smiles. They waved and struck up conversations with enthusiasm. She tried to follow them as best she could, not having the heart to tell everyone she had no recollection of them at all. Through their banter she was able to formulate a better understanding of her time in Suna. She spoke carefully and worked hard at trying to remember who these people were for next time they met as well as building the picture of her role in the village.
It didn’t take long for her to find out she was sent here as an Emissary from Konoha and that she worked with the Kazekage as his PA.
“Hinata sama!”
Suddenly she was set upon by a handsome blond sand nin. He knelt in front of her, clasping her hands in his before his obvious twin brother pushed him out the road and wrapped his arms around her person, turning into a blubbering mess.
"Hinata sama you're okay!! Don't leave me again!" the youth sobbed.
"Hey!" his brother growled. He picked himself off the ground and brushed the dust off his clothes.
"Um," Hinata said awkwardly, prying the weeping youth off of her. The twins clearly knew her better than anyone she’d come across so far. How was she going to tell these two she didn’t know who they were? In the end she decided to just go with giving it to them straight. “Sorry, I don’t know who you are.”
“Of course,” one of them said, misconstruing her meaning. “I’m Hikaru and that’s Hiro.”
“You’ll agree I’m the better looking one right?” Hiro asked with a grin.
“We both look the same, baka!” Hikaru said, hitting his brother on the head. “What’s important is skill and I’m way more skilful than you. In more ways than one…”
Hinata had no idea what was going on.
“Really,” Hiro said with a pout. “You sure did well with Isawa san…”
Hikaru’s expression changed instantly.
“Your last mission?” Hinata guessed. “Did it not go well?”
They shifted on their feet not sure how to answer. Before they could utter a word they both suddenly went flying into oblivion.
In their place a very short old lady stood, long white hair falling around her frail shoulders, a few strands of black still weaved through the fine silver. She had a grouchy expression on her face and a cane in her right hand. It was the cane she'd used to flip the twins up, with the help of a bit of chakra of course.
"They were terrible," the old woman said candidly.
"I-Isawa sama," Hinata gasped, bowing low. It was rare to see the woman away from her compound.
"Relax, Hyuuga," Isawa Midoriko waved off the girls formalities. "I’m surprised you recognise me though.”
“Up until the treaty between Konoha and Suna was signed you were in one of our bingo books.” Hinata failed to mention that the old lady was still in a very secret Hyuuga clan one for an incident known only to her clan.
“You have good eyes. I heard you were unwell and came to see what was going on but you look fine."
"T-to see me?" Hinata was shocked. Despite the sordid past between her own clan and the old woman, she was still a highly respected shinobi in her own right. What had Hinata done that warranted a visit from the esteemed elder? "Really, I don't deserve your concern." She bowed again.
"Now,did I not say to dispense with all that fluttering? I dislike repeating myself. And I'll concern myself with whomever I wish. I'm not dead! A little stroll never hurt anyone. Now walk with me."
"Of course, Isawa sama," she replied resisting the urge to bow again and fell in line with the older woman as they walked down the main road.
"Well, truth is getting my own groceries is no amount of effort for an old shinobi like me but I enjoyed ruffling the feathers of today's youth so much I couldn't resist sending in a weekly request."
Hinata nodded, not really understanding why Isawa sama was talking to her about groceries.
"They always used to send these useless rookies my way, however since you have been here I have enjoyed a bit of a challenge." She laughed, which turned into a hacking cough. "Oh dear, I really am not getting any younger. Anyway, I thought it was about time I thanked you for not treating me like an old lady. If you are ever in my area, you should come in for a cup of tea, I'll regale you with stories of my youth. Oh and feel free to send those twins again. They’re a little green but they were very entertaining."
Hinata didn't know what to make of all that. Did Isawa sama just praise her and invite her to tea? The Isawa sama? The honour was a bit overwhelming. She wasn't sure how she was meant to respond but was relieved of that chore when another voice called her name.
"Hinata!"
Hinata turned wide eyed to see Hyuuga Hiashi walking purposely toward them. Was it just her or were there a lot of Konoha shinobi randomly walking around Suna?
He grabbed her arm and started to pull her along. "We are going now!"
Suddenly his grip was slapped away by a wooden cane. "How rude, ignoring the elderly, Hyuuga Hizashi."
"Isawa sama, it's okay, this is -" Hinata had been about to correct her, but hesitated. To the world outside of of Konoha, her father was dead for obvious reasons. "-my Uncle," she finished lamely.
"I know exactly who this is," Isawa sama said earning a sharp look from Hiashi. "I'm not some rookie from Kumogakure."
"You wouldn't -" Hyuuga Hiashi started in a warning tone.
"Don't tell me what I would and wouldn't do, little boy," the tough old woman said, calling his bluff. "Your identity is none of my concern, however if you continue to treat this girl as you were I will not allow you to leave here unscathed. Be warned, I fought against Hyuuga Hideaki and won."
Hiashi hissed at the mention of his grandfather. Only one person had ever defeated that Hyuuga and in the process Hideaki had lost an eye. It was that very incident that had earned her a place in the Hyuuga clan’s bingo book.
"Isawa Midoriko," The elder Hyuuga stood straight, giving the old woman an appraising look. "You fought unfairly."
"Humph, nothing about that battle had been fair..." she said softly.
Anger welled up in the pit of Hiashi's stomach, he shifted his stance very slightly but Hinata caught it. "No, F - Uncle, you can't!"
Before Hiashi could make his move, sand gathered between the two shinobi and then dispersed across the ground.
"What is all this commotion in my village?"
All heads turned to the red head that was walking toward them.
***
Gaara woke in a panic.
Missing. She was missing!
He'd ruffled the sheets first as if she was going to miraculously appear under them, then, scrambling into his clothes and strapping on his gourd, he opened the door to her room, not surprised it was unlocked. She wasn't there either but at least he could see her belongings were still there. The relief was short lived as the thought of kidnapping entered his mind.
In his haste to find her, he almost ran his sister over on his way out.
"Yo, little brother, what's the rush?" she called, swinging out of his way.
He didn't pause but replied cryptically, "I'm going out."
All sorts of horrible thoughts rushed through his head. Images of her injured or dying kept filtering through - not once did he think she had left of her own accord. He didn’t – couldn’t believe that she would, without telling him, without at least leaving a note, not after last night.
But when he found her, he went cold inside. She was fine, resplendent even, in a form fitting lavender kimono, uninjured and looking as if nothing had even happened. She was saying something.
"-cle, you can't!" he caught the end of it and sensed the tension between the two people standing with her that he'd previously missed. Not sure what was going on he sent his sand ahead, making them aware of his presence.
"What is all this commotion in my village?" he asked not really that interested. He wanted to get Hinata alone to force an explanation for that morning.
Hinata was awe struck once again, staring openly at the man who was making her heart race wildly. The world seemed to melt away. His expression was as level as ever and she was amazed at how he could keep it all contained so well while she was basically falling apart just with the sight of him. Bright red hair still tousled in disarray from sleep, those strong yet surprisingly gentle arms crossed over that broad chest of his... Oh God, she prayed she wasn't blushing too profusely. Look away, she told herself but she couldn't. Nothing could get her to return to reality.
"I am taking Hinata home," her father's words penetrated into her fantasy.
That did it.
Hiashi stared the young Kazekage down, not intimidated by his title. He'd been the Hyuuga Clan Leader for over twenty years there was no way some punk Kazekage was going to get him to back off.
Taking Hinata? Alarm bells rung in Gaara's head, seeing the colour the man's eyes. So this was Hyuuga Hiashi, Hinata's father. "This would be better discussed in my office, Hyuuga Hizashi," he said pointedly emphasising his 'name'.
"Kazekage sama, I leave this matter in your hands then?" Isawa sama said, with a slight bow.
Gaara bowed back, slightly deeper. "Isawa sama."
***
Kazekage sama? Hinata felt two worlds collide with a sickening splat.
She’d slept with Gaara kun.
Gaara kun was the Kazekage of Suna.
She’d slept with the Kazekage! Oh God, she’d just created a national incident between the Wind and Fire countries! This was bad. This was very, very bad.
Back in Gaara's office the tension had gotten worse.
Haruno Sakura had been invited in on the conference as well and now the three Konoha shinobi stood in a semi-circle around Gaara's desk.
"I have contacted Tsunade shishou already,” Sakura started, “who has advised that she would leave this in our hands to sort out. Hizashi sama, she also adds she would like to discuss some things with you when you return to Konohagakure." The significance in her tone was not missed by any of them and Hinata glanced at her dad nervously, there was no doubt in her mind that her father would not come out of that meeting unscathed.
“We are in private here, there is no need for these fake names,” Gaara started. “Hyuuga Hiashi san, you say you are here to retrieve your daughter?”
"Her place is no longer in Suna, therefore I will be escorting her home."
As much as Hinata wanted to protest, she couldn’t. Not only had she disgraced her village last night, but even knowing what her mission was didn’t help her recall any of the work she’d done here. Basically she was a failure both in her personal and professional life.
“I know the details of this stupid mission and it’s clear that not only is it complete but my daughter’s life is at risk here in this wasteland!"
"Hiashi sama!" Sakura cried, glancing at the Kazekage. That kind of insinuated sentence was teetering on insult. “I was also privy of Hinata’s mission. ‘For as long as she is required’ were the words from Tsunade shishou.”
"Ridiculous! As part of the deal Suna's siblings joined our shinobi on a joint mission and they have returned to Suna now. Since that is over you should be able to come home too."
That was news to Hinata; Tsunade sama had never mentioned any of that. Not that it mattered. She had to stay here, to stay with Gaara, no matter what the cost. "But, Father -"
"I can not protect you here!" Hiashi said angrily. "Shinobi or not, mission or not, this is not up for discussion."
Gaara had sat quietly, listening to the unfolding conversation.
Say something, he’d begged silently to Hinata since they’d entered the room, but the girl had said nothing. Had he meant so little to her that she would want to return to Konoha - even after last night?
As soon as he’d heard Hiashi say those last words, he knew he’d lost the battle. Of course the elder Hyuuga had been right. Hinata was supposed to be the emissary between their two nations. Instead she’d been forced to work as his personal assistant, been forced to kiss him, almost killed by poison due to his carelessness and after just recovering been taken advantage off in a fragile state. It was no wonder she let her father argue her case for return to her home village.
He’d promised that he would protect her. It was only now that he realised that might mean he’d have to let her go. Whether she belonged with him or not was debatable. Whether she was safe or not here had a clear answer.
"I'm cancelling her mission," Gaara said suddenly, stunning everyone.
Hinata felt breathless. Even though she’d expected this outcome, it still hurt so much it made her throat dry and raw. After her conduct, being sent home was getting off easily. Still some part of her had hoped Gaara was going to demand she stay. Make up some excuse to keep her here, next to him.
"You are no longer needed," he said, addressing her directly as if to rub salt into her wounds.
Sakura frowned. "Was there something wrong with Hinata san, Kazekage sama?"
"No, just her services are not required. There is nothing I can not directly contact Konoha for. There is no need to have an actual emissary here."
"Very well," Hiashi said, not waiting for Gaara to change his mind. He grabbed his daughter and left the room to go gather her things ready for departure.
Hinata staggered behind her father without resistance, Gaara’s words still ringing in her ears. She was sure the world had just heard her heart breaking.
