An hour into their travel, the skies opened up. The clouds had been darkening steadily as they travelled. Even so, the suddenness of it surprised them and in thirty seconds flat, Sakura was soaked through.
Maiko peered around the curtains at Sakura and Kakashi and scrambled to rearrange her stuff to try to find room for them inside the coach. She stacked, stuffed and shoved things every way possible and finally figured that if she put her feet on the last bag, there was just enough room on the opposite bench for them together.
"Sakura!" Sakura spun as she heard Maiko's voice. "Stop the carriage!"
Sakura turned to the driver and signaled to him. He nodded, pulled the horses over as far as possible and finally stopped. Kakashi came around, dripping wet. "Is something wrong?"
Sakura's look clearly said, 'besides the rain?', but Maiko peeked out again. "Come in! I've made just enough room!" She had to nearly shout over the sound of the rain pounding on the roof of the coach. She opened the carriage door and only after the briefest of hesitation, Sakura and Kakashi climbed in.
"Th-thank you." Sakura was having trouble talking. The warm late-summer morning had turned cold quickly with the clouds and rain. And now wet, she was shivering.
"Of course! I should have thought of this sooner!" Maiko frowned. "I'm afraid I can't get to my clean clothes right now. Will you be okay?" She glanced at Sakura's pack, sitting between her feet, clearly as wet as she was."
At that moment, however, Kakashi pulled one of his spare shirts out of his pack. "This one seems to still be partially dry." He turned to Sakura. "Take the shirt off."
Sakura's hands were shaking hard enough that she was having to fight with her zipper. And, unfortunately, losing. Kakashi simply moved her hands aside and lowered it himself. He peeled her red top off of her and helped her into his dry one. "Now, take your bra off."
"Th-th is-s-s n-no t-time to b-be a h-h-h- p-perv!"
Kakashi sighed and rolled his eyes. "It's wet and will just negate me giving you my dry shirt."
"Oh." Sakura sniffled and wiggled around under his shirt until she'd unhooked her bra. She slipped out of the straps and pulled the sopping piece of cloth out through the sleeve.
Kakashi had taken his own shirt off and was draping both of the wet ones over Maiko's stacked baggage. Sakura handed him her bra and he had to work to keep his mind off of what he was handling. He was uncomfortable enough as close to Sakura as he was, he didn't need to add to it.
The carriage had started to move again and now that Sakura was warming up, both the sway of the coach and the sleepless night were making it difficult to stay awake. She fought it as long as she could, but before long, her head dropped onto Kakashi's shoulder and she fell asleep.
Kakashi followed a few moments later.
Nine months ago.
Sakura stepped through the door and gave herself a moment for her eyes to adjust to the dim interior. The ninja bar was nearly empty, even though it was fairly late. There were a few in jonin clothes that Sakura didn't readily recognize at a table in the corner and a couple of chunin who were just barely old enough to be there in another corner. And Kakashi by himself at the bar, sake bottle in front of him and Icha Icha volume in hand.
She wove through the tables to take a stool two down from him, then signaled to the bartender. "Sake, please, Aio." Her voice was on the verge of cracking, but she managed to keep it clear enough to order.
Her nose was buried in her purse, busy pulling the ryo out and didn't see Kakashi put his book down. "Sakura? Is everything okay?"
"Kakashi-sensei. Hi." She pushed the bills across the bar and picked up the sake bottle, by-passing the small cup and downing half of it in one gulp. "Keep it coming, please," she said to Aio.
Kakashi didn't bother to correct the 'sensei' for the moment. Something was seriously wrong. "Sakura?"
Sakura stared hard at the sake bottle, willing herself not to cry. She hadn't done that in a very long time and she didn't want to now.
In an attempt to stave off the tears, she downed the other half of the bottle, then started on the second one. Or tried to, but it was pulled out of her hand. She looked sideways at her former teacher and sometimes team leader.
"Sakura. What's wrong?" His voice was sharper this time.
But Sakura just shook her head. "Don't. I…can't. Please…" It was all she could get out. Kakashi must have seen something in her because he gave her the bottle back, then moved to the stool next to her.
He knew well how to be patient. So, he sat and sipped on his own bottle while she drank the second one down, then signaled for the third. Aio looked skeptical, but set it down at her look. This was only after glancing at Kakashi and seeing his minute nod, though. He had no wish to make either of these shinobi angry. Sakura had already paid once for major repairs to his bar. And he knew Kakashi from before he'd retired from the ninja corps to run the place.
"Sometimes it sucks having a high tolerance for alcohol." Sakura said philosophically, without a hint of a slur.
"I can understand that." Kakashi agreed.
Sakura had discovered her innate tolerance shortly after her seventeenth birthday. They were out on a mission and she didn't get to celebrate until they'd returned three days after. Naruto, Sai and Kakashi had taken her out to the ninja bar for her first drink and, disappointingly, it took quite a bit of it for her to even feel anything. It had only gotten worse in the four years since.
"Now, do you want to tell me why you're trying to get drunk on a night when you have to be at the hospital the next day?" Kakashi asked, carefully.
Sakura didn't answer at first. She took a drink of her third bottle, then sighed. Kakashi watched as she fought with herself. Then, she took another deep breath. "First off, Tsunade gave me tomorrow off." She paused and swallowed hard. And lost the fight. Tears leaked and ran down her face. "I lost a patient." She nearly choked it, her throat thick with the tears she was trying to desperately hold back. Kakashi had to strain to hear her.
"He was just a baby." The tears started flowing faster now, dripping off her chin. Aio placed a stack of napkins near her, but Sakura ignored them. "He was a genin, just graduated a few months ago." She took a deep breath, but her chest was too tight. She swallowed again. "Training exercises. His teammate was a Hyuuga and they were preparing for the next stage of the chunnin exams." She sniffed and Kakashi handed her a napkin. She wiped her nose without even thinking and handed the dirty napkin back to him.
He didn't even blink. He just set it on the bar and waited. Sakura took a pull on her fourth bottle, then started talking again. "He was supposed to go up against another Hyuuga in the finals in two weeks. His teammate hit him too hard. I happened to be right there. I'd been taking Naruto some of those god-awful soldier pills that he eats of mine and they were practicing there." She stopped again to try to swallow around the huge lump lodged in her throat.
"I saw the hit. Right to his heart. I was on him only seconds later. Seconds. But I couldn't do it. Maybe if I'd been faster. Or had more chakra. Or --"
"Stop it," Kakashi interrupted harshly.
But she didn't hear him. She was back on the training ground, kneeling over the kid, "Oh, God…" she buried her face in her hands and the last remnants of her control broke.
Hard, wracking sobs came muffled through her hands and her whole body shook with them. Kakashi pulled her into his arms and just held her as she cried. He got a few strange looks from the jonin in the corner, but when he turned his head toward them, they looked away. "He was just a baby," she said again.
"Shhhh…" Kakashi rubbed her back lightly, trying to soothe her the best he could. "Come on, this isn't the place for this." He put some money on the bar, tucked his Icha Icha book in his pouch and picked up her purse. As he steered her out to the street, he asked "Which way?" when he realized he'd never been to her apartment.
She gave him the name of her building and he picked her up and took to the roof, anxious to get her out of public view. Thankfully, her building wasn't far from the bar. When he landed in front, he set her down, but still needed to hold her up. "Which apartment, Sakura?"
"Three B." It was muffled, but he could still make it out. With the aid of a little chakra, he got them up the stairs quickly. Sakura fumbled around in her purse for her key, finally just dumping the contents onto the hallway floor. Kakashi plucked the keys out of the pile and unlocked the door. He shoved the other stuff into her purse, noting with a smile not a bit of makeup or any other typical 'girl stuff'. There was money, a medic flashlight, shuriken, a kunai and a few other minor items, but that was it.
He picked her up and carried her through the door, kicking it shut as he went. He dropped the purse and keys by the door, then went over to the couch and sat, settling her into his lap. "Sakura, it wasn't your fault," he said gently.
She just shook her head, the tears falling in earnest again. "I should have --"
"Been faster, stronger, blah blah blah. Bullshit." When she looked up at him in shock, he asked, "has Tsunade ever lost a patient?"
"I…I don't know." She sniffed loudly, and turned away. Kakashi leaned forward and retrieved the tissue box off of the coffee table, then handed her one. After she blew her nose and threw the tissue onto the table, she looked back up at him. "I guess she probably has." She looked away again.
"You know she has." He pulled his gloves off and turned her face back to his again. He took another tissue out and wiped her face off. "His age makes it harder, there's no doubt about that. But there was nothing you could do. You are the best damned medic I know, besides Tsunade."
She stared at him another moment, trying to swallow her tears. He wiped a few more away. "Part of what makes you so good is how much you care for them, Sakura. But no matter how good you are, no matter how hard you try, there will be patients that you lose."
"I…guess I know that." She took a deep breath and that's when she felt the shift. He was staring at her with his one good eye and the look in it was different somehow.
Sakura felt her heart speed up and her breathing shorten. She stared back, then tentatively, she reached up and lifted his headband off his other eye and then off of his head. His face was only a few inches away.
She ran her fingers lightly over the scar on his face where he'd lost his eye. Then she cupped his cheek with her hand and, her gaze never leaving his, she leaned forward and kissed him through the mask.
Kakashi felt like he'd just been hit with his own Raikiri. Sakura was kissing him. He knew it was a result of what she'd been through, what she was trying to deal with and not for any desire for him. But despite the rumors to the contrary, he was only a man. And he started kissing back.
But for the first time in longer than he could remember, Kakashi found himself frustrated with his mask. He pulled back and Sakura dropped her eyes. He could see her swallow and realized she thought he was rejecting her. He tilted her face up, then reached for his mask. Her eyes widened as he lowered it, then he leaned in and his lips met hers again.
It was like a dam broke. The kiss exploded, Sakura speared her fingers through his hair and he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into him. His tongue ran along her bottom lip and she opened to him, her tongue meeting his.
They broke apart briefly, each trying desperately for air, then they crashed together again. Sakura struggled with his vest, finally managing to unzip it, then moved onto his shirt, unbuttoning it until she could get to his bare chest. She ran her hands over it, needing to touch, to feel.
Kakashi kissed a trail down her jaw to her neck, sucking lightly at the base, just above her collarbone. Sakura moaned, her hands tightening on him. She pulled back and as their eyes met, she reached up and pulled the zipper down on her own shirt.
Kakashi's eyes widened briefly before he took over for her, peeling the shirt off of her when it was open. He kissed his way over her shoulder and chest, tracing the edge of the black lace of her bra lightly with his lips. Then he sucked lightly on one nipple through the lace.
"Oh, God…" Sakura threaded her fingers through his hair again, holding him to her. Kakashi reached behind her and unhooked her bra, then sat back and stared as he pulled it off of her. He inhaled sharply, as he took in the beauty that was her.
Sakura pushed on his shirt and Kakashi stood, lifting her with him. He set her gently on her feet, pulled his vest and shirt off, tossing them to the side, then pulled her back against him. He closed his eyes, savoring the feel of skin against skin.
He leaned down and captured her lips again, and they lost themselves once more in the kiss. When they broke apart, Sakura looked up into his eyes and stepped back, pulling him with her. She turned before she could lose her nerve and led him into her bedroom. They stopped just shy of the bed and she turned back.
"Sakura --" he started, but she put her finger over his lips.
"Don't. Just… be with me, please." And looking into her eyes, he knew he couldn't deny her anything in that moment. So, instead of answering her, he pulled her closer to him and started kissing her again. Hands went everywhere as they struggled with clothes, their lips never parting for more than a second. Sakura briefly got frustrated with her boots, but before she could tear them, Kakashi pushed her back onto the bed and as he took them off of her, spent time kissing his way up each of her legs.
By the time she was undressed, she was nearly insane, she was so aroused. She needed him desperately. "Please…" she begged him and he didn't disappoint her. He moved up her body and she wrapped her legs around him as he settled himself.
"Sakura, look at me." He was almost crazy himself, he wanted to be inside her so badly, but he needed to ask. When she opened her eyes, he ran his hand over her face, brushing a strand of hair out of her eyes. "Have you?"
She shook her head and Kakashi had to pause to gather his wits. This was truly nuts, he couldn't do this…
But when he looked at her again, he knew he would. And then he bent and their lips met one more time as he eased himself into her.
"Kakashi…" Sakura moaned, when he was buried completely in her body. She tightened her legs around him and he had to fight hard to keep from pounding into her. She felt so incredibly good, he couldn't think. But then she moved and he couldn't hold on any longer.
The next morning, Sakura woke up alone. Kakashi was gone, the bed and pillow next to her empty. She lay for a while, disappointed, but not sure if she could have faced him. It had been a mistake, she knew that. She'd been so messed up over the kid, and he'd comforted her. That's all it was.
Once decided, she felt better. Or, at least, that's what she told herself. And later, when he agreed with her that he, too, thought it was a mistake, she told herself again it was the right thing. They'd done it, it was over, they'd move on. And she ignored the little stab of disappointment at those words.
