As the sun began breaking over the horizon, five couples knew it was time to begin facing the future…
* * *
He watched her sleep, knew when she began waking. He heard the shift in her breathing. He’d been running it through his head for hours, on and off when they weren’t making love.
He twined his fingers with hers, kissed the curve of her ear, her shoulder. She was cuddled up against him, and they fit perfectly. “I wish to talk to your father.” The words were quiet, just a whisper.
She smiled, warmth spreading. She nodded and turned to him, kissing him thoroughly. “May I?” he asked when they broke apart.
She looked into his eyes, the mirrors of her own. Perhaps they’d been heading here for a long time. She didn’t know. But she was sure this was where she wanted to be. “Yes.” His lips took hers again and they simply kissed, sealing it.
Their touch ignited. After the night before, Hinata didn’t think it was possible, but sure enough, there it was again. It was soft, slow. He caressed her face, and slipped into her slowly, almost torturously slow. She wrapped herself around him, cradling him, holding him to her.
The tenderness bruised her heart, took him by surprise. And when they both fell off the edge together, knew that it was the place they’d been heading from the beginning.
“That is, of course, if we manage to not kill each other,” Neji said with his face still buried in the pillow. Hinata giggled.
“No, we can’t die yet. We haven’t secured an heir for the next generation.” And she giggled harder.
“Good grief, don’t.” He sounded strangled and it only sent her into a bigger fit. He rolled over, pulled her onto his side, then looked down at her.
Her eyes were bright and there was color in her cheeks—good healthy happy color. He’d put it there. An heir. Good grief. It made him pause as something occurred to him. “Hinata—” How the hell did you ask this? He certainly hadn’t thought of it.
“Nope.” She giggled again. “Let’s hope my father agrees quickly, just in case, huh?” She giggled more and fell into a full-fledged fit.
“Yes, well, okay then.” He had no idea what to do with her. He had no idea what to do with the notion that she may well be carrying his child already. He decided, instead, to change direction. “What time are you meeting your friends?”
She stopped giggling briefly. “About an hour.” She hiccupped, trying to get control of herself. “How did you know?”
He just raised one eyebrow at her and her giggles started up again. He sighed. “Well, we need a shower.” And with that, he rolled off the bed and picked her up, giggles and all and headed into the bathroom.

Ino watched Chouji as he ate the last of the pancakes she’d cooked that morning. “Ino…” he said hopefully and she mentally went through her refrigerator to see if she could make another batch, but he surprised her. “Will you marry me?”
He was staring hard at his plate, running his fork through the syrup. He wanted her to marry him?
She stared at him for a full minute. When she was young, she’d always thought she’d marry someday. Then as the realities of ninja life started to intrude, she shoved it off. She’d have fun. She’d be a ninja. But what man would want to marry her and stay home, wondering if she’d return whole? So, she’d let it go.
And now, here Chouji was, asking her. Hmmm. Akamichi Ino… She smiled; she could definitely get used to it. They were teammates. They’d get sent out together, she hoped, so that was not an issue. She considered him. Last night had changed her so much, changed both of them.
He sat there, enjoying her pancakes. They’d made love more times than she could count. No question they got along well in that area. And maybe even someday, a little Chouji running around. A little—shit!
Her hand went to her stomach and her color drained. She knew the procedure. She knew how to do it - the birth control that kunoichi were taught…and she’d forgotten about it completely. How many times? She had no idea. She swallowed, blew out a breath. First things, first.
“Yes,” she said. When he looked up, and grinned, she couldn’t help but grin back.
He jumped up from the table and shouted. He picked her up and started to spin her. She couldn’t help but laugh. “Put me down!” But he only lowered her enough to kiss her silly. The kiss led to more and a moment later, she was up against the wall and Chouji was buried deep inside her. “More. More, Chouji…”
He pumped into her, her back slapped against the wall and the orgasms slam into her. One after the other, until they ran together. She heard Chouji shout her name before he emptied himself into her. Again.
She sucked air in, trying to catch her breath. “We better talk to my father pretty soon. Or you’re going to have to stop catching me by surprise like that.” She laid her forehead on his shoulder and concentrated on taking air in…out…
He leaned back and eased her to her feet. “What?”
“Chouji, we didn’t use anything last night. Or early this morning, or now…” She waited a beat and wasn’t disappointed.
“Oh. Wow. Um. Oh.” He got a one for eloquence, but a ten for the speed at which he got it. He picked her up and set her gently in a chair. “Can I do anything? Are you okay? What do you need?”
She couldn’t help it. She started to laugh. The laugh had her bending over double with it. He just stood, puzzled, while she shuddered with it. When she caught her breath, she looked up at him. “I love you.” And proceeded to start laughing again.
“I love you, too, Ino, but what’s so funny?”
She caught her breath and looked up at him. “I’m not yet. Well, I don’t think so, anyway. I don’t know. But we didn’t do anything to keep it from happening. There’s a way to stop it—a technique we’re taught. But last night I was too nervous to use it. And just now you caught me by surprise.”
He sat back on the chair next to her. “Well.” Was all he seemed capable of. He stared at the table. “Well, when we get back later, we’ll have to talk to your father today. Wow.” His eyes warmed. “It’s certainly not a bad thing to make you my wife sooner, rather than later.”
She grinned at him and moved over to sit on his lap. She wrapped her arms around his neck. “So, you know we’re going then. Okay. I guess we better get cleaned up. We’ll be expected in about an hour.”

They hadn’t spoken in over an hour. At least, that’s what she’d thought, anyway. The room was lightening; she needed to get up, get dressed, and figure out how to get into her apartment without the awkwardness of running into Ino and Chouji. She hoped things went well with them.
They kissed, gently, tenderly. They touched, lightly, just tracing fingers over curves and dimples. They laid, face to face, legs tangled, as close as they could get. He’d taken in every detail of her, and in that, he realized he’d already known her so well. Now, he could learn her texture, her taste. He knew the tenor of her voice as she called his name when he sent her over the edge one more time. He could close his eyes now and recall exactly what it sounded like when she whispered it.
The words had still not been said. At some point, he would. He realized he needed them as much as, he was sure, she did. She’d shown it, over and over, in so many ways over the course of the night.
And as he lay there now, contemplating the rest of the day, the rest of their lives, he was terrified. He, Hatake Kakashi, Sharingan holder, the famous Copy Ninja, was terrified. He couldn’t lose her. He couldn’t go through that again. He was quite sure that this time, it would kill him.
She sensed the change, the shift in his thoughts. It was time. She took a deep breath, then let it out before speaking. “I love you.” It was quiet, almost a whisper, but she knew he heard.
He closed his eyes briefly. There it was. This was it, though. Could he ever walk away from her after this? Could he have before? He knew the answer, without having to think about it. “I love you, Sakura.”
And there, it was out. Their kiss grew, their touches more urgent. To seal it? Maybe. A bit of desperation was sprinkled in there, knowing how fragile it was, life was, especially for them. When they lay in the aftermath a short time later, trying to catch their breath, he leaned up on his elbow and looked down at her.
She smiled up at him. “I have a plan.”
“Oh?” he quirked an eyebrow, the one over his good eye.
“Yes. I’ll just have to out-live you. That’s all.” She grinned and smacked his butt, breaking the tension.
“Good plan,” he said and chuckled. “What time are we meeting them?”
She sighed. She didn’t even argue over the ‘we’. She knew it would be useless. She peeked over her shoulder, past the picture of their team on his bed, to the window. “We’ve got about an hour and I’ve got to go by the apartment. I’m not sure I’m ready for that.”
She kissed him once more, then slithered out from under him and padded to the bathroom. She turned the water on hot and stepped into the shower. She reveled in the spray as it ran down over her skin, and was only slightly surprised when a pair of hands joined the drops of water. “Sakura, I need to ask something. Something I’ve never had to be concerned with before.”
“I’m protected. All of us are taught the technique fairly early, and last night…” she paused as she rinsed her face of soap. “Last night, I was convinced you were with me out of pity—at first.” She added the last when she saw the expression on his face. “I thought it… maybe it was duty or honor—to keep me from finding some stranger, making a mistake.” She tried to shrug it off, but the anger she saw wasn’t going anywhere. She fell silent.
“Do you really think I’d use you that way?” His words were quiet and she cursed herself for saying anything.
“No. I don’t. It wasn’t about you—it was a lack of confidence in me, Kakashi. Put me in front of the Seven Swordsman and I’ll pull my gloves tighter on and send them back to their maker. Put a patient on the edge of death in front of me and I’ll fight Death to the bitter end to keep that patient with me. Put me in front of you…” She let it trail off, turned around and rinsed her face again, this time to hide the tears falling. She knew she was being cowardly now, but couldn’t seem to help herself.
He turned her back. “I’m sorry.” She tried to lower her head, but he put a finger under her chin and held her gaze. “I’m sorry,” he said again, and kissed her.
Her eyes closed and she kissed him back. “I’m not Ino, I’m not Tenten or Temari. They’re confident, they know what they want, even when it comes to this. I don’t. Hell, even Hinata knew who would want her.” She took a shaky breath.
She scrubbed her hands over her face, tried to pull herself together. “We were protected.” She tried for a half smile.
He kissed her again, showing her who wanted her. She couldn’t mistake it, and it grew quickly. Sometime later, the water was getting cold and they hurried to soap him up and get out before they froze. They dressed, and together headed toward her apartment.

Tenten couldn’t think of a single reason in that moment to move. The hard planes of Lee’s body were pressed against her back, his warmth cuddling her, his breath teasing the edge of her ear. In that moment, she was perfectly happy to stay there forever.
Real life often intruded too quickly. She watched the sunlight as it made its way down the wall on the far side of the room. Lee’s voice was quiet in her ear. “What time?” She didn’t pretend to not know what he meant.
“An hour, maybe. A little less.” She sighed, shifted and turned to him. A kiss on his chin, his nose, then their lips met and the passion flared again.
They didn’t try to stop it. They’d turned back to each other, over and over through the night. And again here they were. It seemed to consume them, and he took a nipple into his mouth, tasting her, never seeming to tire of her flavor.
Her hands went through his hair and she strained against him. She wanted him. Inside. Now. “Lee…”
He didn’t disappoint. A moment later they were joined, and she forgot everything but him. Lee seemed to have a way of blocking out everything that wasn’t him, wasn’t them. She focused on it, moved with him, giving as much as he gave.
But it wasn’t enough for him. He wasn’t happy unless she couldn’t think at all. He pushed, teased, touched, until he saw her eyes close, felt her quiver and fall apart. Then he pulled her back, kissing her, nibbling on a lip, then sent her over the edge again.
Tenten couldn’t have named a single ninja rule. She had no idea where she was, what her name was. She only knew him, his smell, his taste, the feel of him as he slid in and out of her. And she felt. She kissed him back, wrapped her legs more firmly around him and pulled him into her.
“Give to me.” She whispered to him. And he did.
The lay together after it was over, tangled once more in the sheets. The sun was rising quickly and she knew she’d be late. “I must go to my room before we leave.” He said it quietly. She wondered why it didn’t bother her that he assumed he’d go along. She wondered at the lack of indignation.
Instead, she nodded. “Okay.”
“We better hurry and get you ready then.” He was rewarded with her stare. “I do not wish to be apart Tenten, even for a few minutes. So we must hurry if we are to meet our friends.”
She shook her head, untangled her limbs from his and headed to the shower. When he sat there on her bed as if he would wait, she crooked a finger. “There’s not a lot of hot water, but we—” She paused and winked. “—might be faster if we shower together.”
Lee’s smile was slow, but the speed with which he covered the distance from her bed to the shower wasn’t.

Temari lay propped on one elbow, looking down on the man she loved. They’d turned a huge corner last night. She didn’t want to think about it, but if she had, she would realize how much she’d missed in the last two years.
And two years of life were very precious to a ninja. How many did they have? That was the mystery. She traced a finger down over his chest and was rewarded when he tightened his arms around her.
“If you start that now, I can’t guarantee that we’ll get out of here in time.” The affected laziness was back.
“In time?” She knew he knew their plans. But decided it’d be fun to play with him.
“I thought we got past that kind of bullshit last night.” He opened one eye.
She sniffed, but couldn’t hold the laugh in. “Okay, okay. We’re supposed to meet an hour after dawn.” She sighed. She moved to climb over him and head to the bathroom, but he pulled her down on top of him.
“I didn’t say I’d let you go without it, though, did I?” He waited for the response he knew he’d get.
“Let me go?” She bristled, knowing she was falling into his trap. She bent down, took his lips and kissed him.
It backfired, though and somewhere in there, she didn’t care if she was winning or losing this battle because in the end, they’d both win. She straddled him, kissed him, nibbled on him. He ran his hands all over her, touching her, feeling the softness of her skin.
As she moved down over him, a thought occurred to him. She felt the change, but didn’t move. “Shika?” She was very quiet.
“Um—” He lay there, staring at her. “Are you, erm—” He stopped again and, to Temari’s surprise, he blushed.
She raised an eyebrow, but still didn’t move.
“Well, um—what I’m trying to ask—” Geez, Shikamaru, spit it out. His gaze dropped from her face to her belly and stared. Was there, even now? Could she be knitting up his child?
She followed his gaze, watched the play of emotions on his face. “We’re covered.” When his eyes met hers, she thought she saw a bit of disappointment in them. She smiled. “If I go there, at some point—” She paused. “I swear, I’ll punch you from Suna to Leaf if you let this slip.” She took a breath. “I wanna do it right.” She mumbled the last, but he caught it.
Absolutely enchanted by her change in demeanor, he stared and a smile formed on his face. “I see,” he said. Plans began forming in his head before he really realized it. “Well, then. That’s good.” Then, very quietly, he leaned up and said in her ear, “for now.”
And began nibbling. And before long, the conversation faded into the background and they instead took the time to show how they felt. She moved over him, taking things at her pace, doing her best to drive him insane.
It was working, but only for so long. They rolled, and it was his turn. He slowed the pace, knowing it would make her crazy. He kissed, nibbled, tasted and touched, and without them trying, it turned to tender in a blink. And when they went off the edge, it was together.
They showered together and were running to get to his parent’s place so he could change, just as the last shakes of dawn were clearing on a bright, promising day.
