When Hinata went over to wake Tenten and Lee, she paused for a brief moment. Lee had moved his bedroll over and had an arm wrapped around Tenten. She was afraid that if she woke them like this, that she would make things worse with them, but she was exhausted and needed to get some sleep before they continued their mission.
She gently touched Lee’s shoulder, but he didn’t even change his breathing. She shook him lightly, but that didn’t do anything either. Finally, she squatted down and whispered, “Lee! Tenten!”
Tenten woke up first and looked up at Hinata in confusion. “Oh, I’m sorry!” That’s when she seemed to notice that Lee was wrapped around her. She blushed but looked happy at the same time. She got a devilish look on her face, though and elbowed Lee in the ribs.
“TENTEN!” he practically shouted. She slapped a hand over his face and leaned in to whisper something in his ear.
Hinata saw enough. They were awake and that’s what mattered. She made her way over to her own bedroll, having momentarily forgotten that Neji had pulled it up against his. She sat on one side and pulled her sandals and vest off before crawling under the blanket. She tried not to think about how close Neji was and instead concentrate on sleep.
Neji made sure that was impossible. He pulled her close to him, wrapped an arm around her and put the other under her head. Hinata was fairly certain there wasn’t a single bit of air between their bodies. She glanced quickly at Genma’s sleeping form and was very glad that his back was to them.
Her body was singing. She felt the heat spread just from laying against him. She closed her eyes, trying to will away the sensations, but to no avail. Then Neji’s hand began stroking her in small, ways. Her arm, down her hip, over her thigh. She felt herself get moist in places she’d never truly begun to think about. His hand moved back up her body, stroking her stomach before coming to rest again just under her breasts.
Even without actually touching them, they responded. Despite her best efforts, she squirmed a bit against him and she felt his body respond to hers. “Hinata…” he breathed in her ear, his lips grazing it. She moved again and this time felt the full evidence of his desire against her back. “Careful…don’t move or you’ll give us away.”
His hand once again moved down her body, over her stomach and paused at the waistband of her pants. She inhaled sharply, when his fingers burrowed under the elastic and continued a path further down. They slipped under her panties and she stopped breathing altogether when they touched her wet heat.
“Spead your legs slightly.” He whispered. Her body obeyed as if it had a will of its own. Neji’s fingers spread her sex open, then dipped down to enter her before caressing the nub at the top. She tensed, sensations rioting through her body, unable to keep completely still.
What is he doing to me? She gasped quietly and he used his other arm to guide her hand to her mouth. “Bite this.” He said in her ear, then began to trace feathery kisses along the curve of it.
She bit down hard on her hand as Neji’s fingers worked over her sex as if it were a finely tuned instrument. She could feel her muscles tensing in response to him and the pressure in her lower body was building until she thought she’d go insane.
He was relentless, teasing her, touching her, first rubbing, then caressing, then giving it the slightest flick. Hinata thought for sure that their bedroll would explode if he kept it up.

Neji knew she was close. He twisted his other arm around until he could cup one breast while he continued to work her. He gently squeezed her breast through her shirt teasing the nipple and just then he felt her stiffen, then begin to tremble as she flew into pieces in his arms. He kissed her gently, her ear, her cheek, her neck.
“Sleep, Hinata…” He whispered to her as she drifted down from her cloud. He kissed her cheek, straightened her clothes and tightened his arms around her.

Hinata came awake slowly the next morning. No one else was awake yet, save the third watch. She became aware of Neji immediately, still locked around her, holding her close. She savored the feeling of being in his arms, but the blush came quickly as she remembered what he’d done to her the night before.
That was enough to wake her up fully and had her pulling on Neji’s arms. He released her immediately in his confusion and she bolted for the trees.
She returned a few moments later and Neji was right where she’d left him, the confusion still etched on his face.
“Koishii?” He queried quietly. The endearment seemed to slip by her.
She was bright red, but still managed to squeak out, “I’m sorry. I h-had to g-go.” She cleared her throat and launched herself at him, hugging him tightly. “Neji, I, um….Th-thank you, Niisan.” His arms came around her, holding her tight to him.
“Niisan?” He chuckled. “I think we’re past that, aren’t we?”
She gulped. “A…are we?” She whispered.
“I think we are. Just call me Neji and leave off the ‘niisan’.” She nodded against his shoulder.
“Okay…Neji.” She couldn’t look at him, images of the night before were still playing in her head.
He hugged her tightly to him for one more moment, before patting her backside. “We need to get moving.”
Hinata got up and went to join Tenten and Ino to head down to the stream to clean up.

They made good time and were at the village in only a few hours. They stopped before the gates again, to make sure there was no new activity. Sai was on his bird without even being asked. “Hinata, Neji, do you see anything?”
They glanced at each other briefly, then activated their Byakugan at the same time. Neji started searching to the right, Hinata to the left. “I don’t see anything. Do you, Hinata?”
“No, nothing.” She let go of the trait and looked at Genma.
“Okay. I doubt there’s any point to searching the village anymore, so we’ll head straight through. Keep your eyes open, though.” Everyone nodded and they headed in.
“Geez, this is creepy.” Ino said. “It’s so odd to see an entire village like this.”
“I heard a story once of a place across the ocean that had villages that would empty like this. The called them…” Lee searched his memory. “Ghost towns. Though, I do believe that was a long time ago.”
“I heard that story. I thought Guy-Sensei was making it up.” Tenten looked sideways at him.
Lee shrugged. “Why would he? Perhaps he heard about it in a far off land.” To Lee, anything his sensei said to him was gospel.
“But why would an entire village vanish like that?” Tenten pressed.
“He said it had something to do with gold ‘drying up’ but that didn’t make much sense to me. I’m sure there was a reason.” Tenten poked him in the ribs and rolled her eyes.
“You’d believe anything.” She snorted.
“Not anything! I had a hard time believing…” He trailed off, suddenly realizing he’d said more than he meant to.
“What?” Tenten asked.
“Uh, nothing.” He gave her a meaningful look and Hinata took pity on him.
“I’m not sure about Guy-Sensei’s stories, but we already have an idea. Though I do agree with Ino. It still is a bit creepy. I think it’s the suddenness of it.” Neji’s hand tightened around hers. He’d taken it as soon as they’d cleaned up camp and started walking and hadn’t let go yet. It made it very difficult for her to concentrate on anything.
They moved through the empty village swiftly, and when they came out on the other side, they could see the Valley of the End in the distance. “Let’s have some lunch.” Genma said and they all gratefully sank down for a break.
Hinata passed around some of the rice and vegetables she had left over from the day before and they all munched away happily. “Okay, I think our best bet is to head straight for the leftovers of the Sound village and see what we can find. We know he had several labs in the area, so that’s probably the most likely place. It’ll take us most of the day to get there, so let’s just plan to camp on this side of the Fire country border.”They packed up their lunch things and headed out again.

Even with a swift pace, the sun was starting to set before they got to the place they wanted to camp. “This looks good. We’ll set up watches again and you girls be sure to go together when you go to clean up and…err,” Genma cleared his throat.
They giggled a bit at him and headed off to a part of the river out of sight of the camp. There were sighs of relief all around when they made it into the water. “Oh, wow, this feels good. I think we must be getting soft, not going on missions like we used to. I don’t remember it being this tiring, just travelling this far.” Ino frown into the water.
Tenten spoke up. “I know what you mean. It seems like we’ve been…I don’t know, stagnant. I understand why the Hokage is handling things the way she is, but I sometimes get edgy.”
“We certainly wouldn’t want that. Never let someone who plays with sharp things get edgy.” Hinata laughed.
Tenten splashed her and they broke out into a full water battle before Ino spluttered and yelled “enough!” They continued laughing as they soaped up, cleaned up their clothes and headed back to camp.
It was the guy’s turn, so Hinata pulled more of the fresh food out and was surprised to find that Ino had brought some, too. “You’re not the only one who can cook. I’d never have grabbed Chouji’s attention if I couldn’t.” She said with a grin.
“I’m going to have to take lessons.” Tenten piped up from her side of the fire. “I can’t cook to save my life and I don’t want to let Le….” She slapped her hand over her face, which was turning a very dark shade of red.
“What’s your problem Tenten? I know all about you and Lee. You guys couldn’t show it more if you were wearing lighted signs around your neck.” At this, however, Tenten only seemed to get redder. “Really, Tenten. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. I mean, I understand. I resisted Chouji for so long.” She shook her head at the memories of his persistence.
“Anyway, you two are adorable together. And we’ll be happy to teach you to cook. Won’t we Hinata?” Ino poked Hinata in the ribs.
She shook herself. “Of course we will.” She said. She’d gotten lost in a daydream of what it would be like to cook for Neji. This was getting ridiculous. She already did cook for him. But, well, that was sort of a friend, almost brother thing. She shook her head again and smiled brightly at Tenten. “We can start when we get home after this mission. I have a few things to attend to, like taking over the clan, but I’m sure I can fit in some time.”
“WHAT?!” Ino practically shrieked.
Hinata blinked at her in surprise. “My father is ill. The elders require a very strong leader or they will try to push their ideals and it could get rather…ugly. If my father’s illness becomes known , the elders will take any chance they can to take advantage of that.”
“Has he been looked at? Maybe it’s not serious?” Ino said.
“Oh, I’m sure he’s seen Tsunade-sama herself. He would not willingly do this yet, if there was any other way.
“But that’s not fair! You’ve barely had a chance to live! And you’re going to get stuck with that kind of responsibility.” It warmed Hinata that Ino cared that much about her.
“Hinata-sama is more than capable of handling it. I expect she will handle it even better than her father did and maybe even better than his before him. Though we were too young when Hiashi-sama took the mantle of leadership to know for sure.”
His quiet words ripped through her as if she’d been through a storm. “Neji?” She looked at him, stunned.
“Yes, Hinata-sama?” But she couldn’t say any more. She stood there for another moment, wide-eyed before pulling herself together.
“Thank you.” She said quietly and went back to helping put the food together.
Neji leaned over to whisper in her ear. “It’s the truth.” He said simply, then went to put the bedrolls out and hang his wet things out to dry.

After that brief discussion, the conversation turned back toward the mission. “I wish we had more to go on. I really don’t want to find all those people dead. And what if it’s…” Ino gulped. “Almost worse than that, not that I’d wish them dead. But what if they’re hurt? I can’t heal an entire village. How do I choose? I’ll run out of chakra long before I can even begin to scratch the surface of the injuries.”
“Let’s not worry about that until we’re faced with it. I think it’s a lot more likely that they are still simply being held capture somewhere. It hasn’t been all that much time since we noticed them missing. And remember the half-eaten meals? Those were too fresh for them to have been gone long.
“Besides that, Hinata has some skill with first aid and treatment.” Genma looked at Hinata.
“Hai. I brought my ointments and I’m sure I can find what I’d need to make more. I don’t know the jutsus, but I can do other stuff. I think Tenten can help with basic first aid, too.” Ino nodded at this, obviously filing the information away.
“As Genma said, though. Until we know what we’re up against, it makes no sense to worry overmuch about that. If we’re faced with an entire village hurt, well, we can send for help, help those hurt the most and then worry about the rest.” Everyone looked up in surprise at Sai. He’d been so quiet up until this point.
Ino looked pensive. “Triage. I think that’s what Tsunade-sama called it. They do that to a degree at the hospital, but it’s rarely necessary. I remember us having to do something similar after the attack from Pein. That was one of the worst times in my medial career. All those people…” Ino’s eyes drifted off into the distance. Hinata hurried over and put her arms around her.
“I know what you mean. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen this time, okay?” She smiled a little too brightly, but Ino seemed to shake off the black thoughts and smiled back.
“Thanks, Hinata.” She hugged her back tightly, then yawned. “Oh my. It’s been a bit of a long day.”
“Ino’s right. Time to get settled. I’m not really tired yet, so I’ll take first watch. Sai, you’re with me. Hinata and Neji, you’ll take second and Tenten and Lee, you’ll take third.”
“Hai!” There was clattering and a bit of chaos as everyone got settled. Hinata was a little nervous about lying next to Neji, but she knew she’d need to lie down and sleep. Kicking off her sandals, she crawled under the blanket Neji held up. She tried, again, to sleep on her side of the bedroll, but he firmly pulled her back against him.
“Get some sleep, Hinata-sama. You look exhausted.” She nodded almost imperceptibly and unconsciously snuggled into Neji a bit more. She was convinced she wouldn’t sleep, but she never heard Neji whisper “I love you” in her ear, she was already out. Later she would assume she’d dreamed it.
