Ero Sennin: I’m glad you like this story the most. I think this is my favorite too…although I
really dig my Madara in Roses. I’m not
sure where my muse is going with Pein yet.
I know she’s got something planned still, though. Sasuke had to be stubborn and not let his
talk with his dad go as I had planned…oh well.
I think this turned out the way it should have.
Infek: Thank you for such nice
comments. I appreciate when the story is
telling itself and people still enjoy it.
I hope you enjoy this chapter.
Halloween: I wanted a scary Hinata. You never really see scary Hinata. It’s still a bit before our boys get
together, but I hope to make it entirely worthwhile once they do. Pein makes me feel bad for him…maybe it’s the
piercings. I just love those piercings
and can’t really hate him…even when I do hate him. :)
Nami: I’m so glad you enjoyed
it. I realized after your comment that I
never really said anything about the shark-like guy, and to be honest, I think
he initially was meant to play a bigger role, but ended up not being needed. I should go edit my chapter… but I’m lazy
like that. I hope you can forgive me. :) And Lee is spoiled, he’s just still…Lee… and
little ADD-ish.
Nejislady: I feel so bad!
My muse totally changed the direction of Sasuke’s visit with his dad,
but I think it’s better this way than what I originally intended. I think we all feel Pein once in a while, and
I wanted him to be kind of easy to relate to.
Sneakyfox: I’m glad you liked it
and I hope you enjoy this conversation.
It’s a bit … well, emotional turmoil explains it pretty well. ;)
Alice: I’m glad you’re reading. I’ll take a non-yaoi girl who enjoys what I
write anytime over a Yaoi girl or boy who has to disrespect someone who is just
doing something for the simple fact that they enjoy it. I hope the story doesn’t
disappoint.
Chapter Eight
Sasuke was nervous now that his father was here. His father had always been such an oppressive
figure in his life, even before the whole Itachi incident. He looked at the ground before taking a deep
breath and looking into his father’s eyes.
“Why?” He couldn’t bring himself
to finish the question as tears sprung to his eyes and his throat
constricted. He shouldn’t show weakness
in front of his father, but he couldn’t help it. He took a few deep breaths as it seemed his
father waited patiently. When he finally
got his emotions back under control, he tried the question that had been
burning his mind since that day. “Why
hasn’t Itachi ever really been punished for killing Shisui? I know you know what he meant to me, and that
Itachi cared about him almost as much.
Why just house arrest?”
Fugaku sighed. He
knew this question would come up eventually.
“Sasuke, I would have done the same if you had been the one to do
it. I hate the thought of family
business being public. I hate the
thought that something might happen to one of my children.”
Sasuke frowned. His
father was protecting Itachi, but he’d known that. He wanted to know why. He dropped his head to the table. “I’m not Itachi you know. I wouldn’t do something like that to anyone,
so why am I being treated like I’m all ready guilty of his crime?”
Fugaku frowned. He
really hoped he wouldn’t have to explain this now. He would have shaken his head if he was not
an Uchiha. He took a deep breath but
still couldn’t bring himself to explain what was more or less the family curse. There were just as many Uchihas that had
succumbed to mental breaks as there were who managed to remain sane. It wasn’t that Itachi had wanted to kill Shisui, but he had snapped.
Itachi wasn’t even Itachi inside his mind anymore. He may remember a lot of what happened and
who he was and what he liked and disliked, but he couldn’t connect himself with
strong feelings. Jealousy of Sasuke and Shisui’s relationship had caused the initial snap that day. If he told Sasuke that, though, Sasuke would
blame himself, and that wasn’t what he wanted either.
Fugaku looked at his worn and drawn son. “Sasuke, I’m sorry. It’s just that we didn’t want what happened
to Itachi to happen to you.” He placed a
hand to his face. “Itachi had a
psychotic break. His mind and body
weren’t really connected anymore. He
didn’t know it was Shisui and he didn’t know why he
did it. He simply hasn’t come out of his
break.”
Sasuke growled. Of
course, Itachi was the one who was actually insane and he was the one in the
institution. Everything Itachi had said
made sense. Sasuke wanted to scream and
sob. He knew his father barely cared
about him, but to just push him off to an institution while his actually insane
brother got to live a posh life at home, and it was posh, angered him to an
extreme he had not felt in a long time.
He turned his venom on his father.
“I’m not Itachi and I’ve never given into any vice. For as long as I can remember, Itachi was a
drunk. I am sorry that it is common to
go insane just because we’re born into this family, but it doesn’t excuse
anything. You seem to think it
does. I lost my best friend because of
my brother, and I loved them both. How
do you think that makes me feel?” Sasuke
shook his head. “Thank you for coming
today father, but I must be going. I
have an appointment with a friend.”
Sasuke stood and stalked back into the building and straight
towards Kakashi’s office. He was
supposed to meet with the man after his meeting with his father. He growled as he threw the doors open. He hadn’t been this angry since just after he
found out that nothing would happen to Itachi.
He kicked Kakashi’s door open with a vengeance.
Kakashi jumped as his door banged against the wall. He sighed when he saw how angry Sasuke
was. Obviously the meeting Sasuke had
had high hopes for had not gone well. He
leaned back in his chair and watched as Sasuke paced in front of his desk
before finally kicking a chair back and sitting down on it. He knew Sasuke’s state of mind and waited for
the boy to break the silence. If he did
it, it would only serve to anger Sasuke further and their little
accomplishments would be erased.
Sasuke growled and pulled his hair. “He’s such an ass. He doesn’t even care that Itachi murdered, in
cold fucking blood, my only friend. What
did Shisui ever do to him?”
Kakashi regarded Sasuke carefully. “I’m sure it’s a difficult situation for
him.”
Sasuke shook his head angrily. “No, it’s not. His whole life has always been about
Itachi. Itachi is the one who has always
been the center of his world. Itachi
with his straight A’s, business minded nature, maturity, and his dark fucking
demons.” Sasuke couldn’t hold back as
sobs wracked his body.
Kakashi smiled softly.
He knew this was beneficial to Sasuke in the long run. In his anger Sasuke had dropped his
walls. If he didn’t go about this the right
way, though, Sasuke would shoot them back up two times as thick. “If it makes a difference to you Sasuke,
there are at least two people in this Institution who could care less about
Itachi, but really care about you.”
Sasuke scoffed.
“Right, like who?” He sniffled as
he fought to get his emotions back under control.
Kakashi’s voice softened.
“I happen to be one of them. I
could care less about your brother. I
think anyone capable of what he has proven himself capable of should be locked
away for his own safety and that of those around him.” Sasuke looked as if he were calming. “And I’d venture to guess that you are the
only Uchiha that matters to Shikamaru.”
Sasuke sighed.
Hearing Shikamaru’s name seemed to be almost as good a relaxant as any
medication he could have been given. He
sat up in the chair and looked almost sheepishly at Kakashi, or as sheepishly
as an Uchiha could. “I’m sorry for
trying to destroy your office.”
Kakashi shrugged.
“Want to talk about what set you off?”
Sasuke frowned and shook his head. “I’m drained.
I want to go to sleep until I go to play with Shikamaru.”
Kakashi nodded and had to work to keep the dirty chuckle
from escaping his mouth. “Certainly, but
I want to talk about this later, all right?”
Sasuke nodded and headed back to his room. He put the Misfits CD that Shikamaru left
there in his player and hid under the covers to seclude himself from everything
but the music.
**************************
Gaara stretched as the sun entered his window. He sighed as he glanced at the clock and saw
that it was just after 5 AM. He sighed
and rubbed his eyes. He’d always had
problems with insomnia, but this was ridiculous. He frowned and closed his eyes, pulling the
blanket over his face and curling up under his cocoon. He smiled at the memory of Naruto’s
visit. He really hoped Naruto would talk
to Neji.
He squeezed his eyes shut trying hard to fall back asleep,
but when he realized it was futile, he turned on his radio. He turned the volume down so that it was just
barely audible, not wanting to wake anyone else on the floor. He lay on his bed with his eyes closed until
he heard movement on the floor. He heard
his door open and pulled the covers from his head. He saw Tsunade standing in his door. She chuckled softly. “Still having trouble with insomnia?”
He sat up and nodded.
“I’m sure it will just take some time for me to get used to the
medication enough to sleep. It’s been
that way in the past. Either I’m on
medication and I can’t sleep much or I’m hearing voices and have insomnia.”
Tsunade nodded. “I would like you to
introduce yourself to Shikamaru this morning, if that’s all right. He needs intelligent people to stimulate him,
and since Sasuke is only up here for an hour a day, he’s starting to get
bored.”
Gaara nodded. “I
don’t mind intelligent conversation. I
don’t get as much of it as I’d like, especially the last few weeks up
there.” He motioned to the floor above
him.
Tsunade smiled.
“Anyway, when you’re ready to meet him just head over. He’s not exactly a morning person, so if he’s
rude, don’t take it personally.”
Gaara sighed a little as he watched Tsunade leave his
room. He would meet with her later that
day for their talk. He slid his feet
into his Converses and made his way to the shower. Once he deemed himself clean enough, he headed
over to Shikamaru’s room. He knocked on
the boy’s door and was surprised when a rumpled head poked out the door. “Can I help you?” Shikamaru asked even though
he wasn’t fully awake.
Gaara smirked.
“Tsunade told me to introduce myself.
I’m living next door while you’re up here.”
Shikamaru rubbed the back of a hand over his sleepy
eyes. He groaned. He really hated morning. “Mm, right.
You want to go to breakfast then?”
Gaara shrugged. “I suppose. I haven’t met anyone else here I want to eat
with.”
Shikamaru chuckled.
“You wouldn’t. Medium risk floor
is kind of dull. Of course, coming off
high risk this must feel kind of good, huh?”
Gaara shrugged again.
“Better access to the few people who care about you, anyway.”
Shikamaru smirked. He
liked this kid. He slid his shoes on
before walking through the door. He
nodded at Gaara and headed toward breakfast.
“What’s your name?”
“Gaara.” Gaara
contemplated the boy walking just in front of him. He was good looking, but not really someone
Gaara could see himself with.
“Shikamaru, right?”
Shikamaru nodded as he grabbed a tray and let the lady dish
him up with breakfast. He headed over to
an open table and motioned for Gaara to sit across from him. He ate a few pieces of bacon before looking
at Gaara. “Who’s that blond that comes
in here for you all the time?”
Gaara smiled and was surprised to see no recoil coming from
Shikamaru. “Naruto. He’s my best friend. Maybe even more like a brother.”
Shikamaru smirked. At
least Gaara wasn’t dating the man. Now
Sasuke maybe had a chance. He’d only let
either one of them near each other though if they wanted the same thing, either
a quick fuck or a relationship. He
wouldn’t let either one of them get hurt.
He had already made up his mind about Gaara, and he’d protect the red
head as fiercely as he protected Sasuke.
“My friend Sasuke will be up later today to play some chess. You’re welcome to join us.”
Gaara nodded. “It’s
been a long time since I played.
Naruto’s wonderful, but he doesn’t have the attention span to sit there
so long.”
Shikamaru nodded.
“Once I’m back down on low-risk, after they’ve determined I’m not
suicidal again, you should see if we can come up and visit you for chess or
something. Kakashi’s pretty cool and so
is Tsunade. I’m sure they could work
something out.”
“How long are you up here?” Gaara knew he’d seen the boy in
the courtyard with the black haired boy he found so attractive. “Is Sasuke the one you were always with in the courtyard?” He asked before he could stop the
words.
Shikamaru didn’t let his internal smirk show. It was nice to know the attraction was at
least mutual. “Mmmhmm. And in answer to your first question, 3 weeks
unless I fail my evaluation, which I won’t.
I never do.”
Gaara smirked before standing up. “I’m going to try to sleep some more. These meds are totally fucking up my sleeping
pattern. Come get me when your friend
gets up here?”
Shikamaru nodded and watched as Gaara headed back to the
rooms. Now he just had to figure out how
they felt about each other this afternoon and he could go about getting Sasuke
and Gaara together. It was easier to
worry about them than to try to figure out how to tell Chouji he had feelings
for him. He sighed when he noticed the
time. He had a meeting with Tsunade.
He dumped his tray and walked back to her office. He slumped next to her door and pulled one
hand from his pocket to knock gently, while he tipped his head up, wishing he
could see the sky on this floor.
Watching the clouds with Sasuke was one of the things he missed most
about this floor. “Come in.”
Shikamaru pushed the door open and sat down across from
Tsunade. “I kissed Sasuke.”
Tsunade raised an eyebrow.
Shikamaru’s sessions always proved interesting, but this was beyond
normal. “Oh?”
Shikamaru sighed and looked at his therapist. “Yeah.
It was good because neither of us felt anything. It helped me because one of the things that
triggered my episode was thinking I was in love with Sasuke, but it was never
going to happen. I was worried that no
one could possibly love me the way I am right now.”
Tsunade folded her hands under her chin and leaned forward
on her desk. “And now?”
Shikamaru blushed.
“Sasuke helped me realize that Chouji is really who I’m in love
with. I just wish I knew whether or not
he was gay.” He took a deep breath. “It really helped me a lot to physically test
the things that were causing me my mental anguish. I think it might help if I do that from now
on.”
Tsunade frowned.
“Shikamaru, while I don’t want to discourage you from finding a plan to
control your disease, I don’t think this is a very good way.” She sighed at his dejected look. “If you were triggered by something dangerous,
this wouldn’t help in anyway. Say if you
were depressed because you thought that it would be easier if you were dead,”
she looked at him in a knowing way.
He sighed. “I know,
but I only get suicidal once out of four episodes. If there is always someone around to keep me
from doing that-”
Tsunade frowned as she interrupted. “Is that really what you want to do to those
people who care so much about you? Do
you really want them to have to be on suicide watch?”
Shikamaru shook his head.
“No, of course not.” He
sighed. “I guess I’m going to have to go
back to the drawing board.” He dropped
his head. “I’m so sick of this. I just want to be better.”
Tsunade frowned slightly before moving next to Shikamaru and
putting her hand on his shoulder. He
looked into her eyes and looked so pitiful she couldn’t help but want to fix
it. “Keep your head up. We’ll find something; I promise.”
Shikamaru nodded and stood.
“I’ll go wait for Sasuke now.”
************
Sasuke sat down at the chess board and waited for Shikamaru. It was odd that his friend wasn’t here
waiting for him, but he wouldn’t complain.
Shikamaru was probably just sleeping in.
It couldn’t be easy to go through so much in such a short amount of
time.
Sasuke looked up as he heard people entering the commons
room. “’Bout time, Shika. I almost declared you as a forfeit.” Sasuke’s smirk dropped as he saw the
attractive red head with Shikamaru. He
recognized the boy as having been high risk and the one who was admitted at the
same time he was. He took an internal
deep breath. It was just an attractive
guy; it wasn’t like he hadn’t seen plenty of them before.
Shikamaru smirked.
Sasuke may have regained his composure quickly, but that didn’t mean he
didn’t see the slip. “Sasuke, this is
Gaara. He was just transferred down here
about the same time as I was transferred up.”
Sasuke nodded. “So,
are we still on?” He motioned to the chess game. “I think I’m going to beat you, finally.”
Shikamaru scoffed. “Are
you going to play as well as yesterday when I thought your head was going to
explode?”
Sasuke sighed.
“You’re such an ass sometimes.
Why do I put up with you again?”
Shikamaru sat down across from Sasuke and Gaara sat next to
Shikamaru. “Are you two dating?”
Both boys erupted in laughter. Shikamaru wiped his eyes and turned toward a
stunned Gaara. He shook his head. “No, we’re not. Sasuke is one of my two best friends, but the
only one of my best friends that I don’t want to fuck. I love him with all my heart, but I would
never date him. So if you see us being
all touchy-feely, you don’t have to feel left out.” He smirked.
“You could even join if you felt so inclined.”
Gaara shook his head.
“Naruto’s like that. I guess I
can stand the two of you.” He smirked
and nudged Shikamaru in the ribs a bit.
“I’d like to play the winner.”
Shikamaru nodded.
“You got it. I’ll be ready to
play you in about 30 minutes.” Sasuke
growled and flicked Shikamaru on the forehead.
Shikamaru shrugged. “Unless
Sasuke can finally beat me.”
Gaara watched as the two boys played their game. He couldn’t help but steal glances at the
very attractive boy sitting across from him.
He noticed the way Sasuke’s muscles moved as he placed his pieces. He felt himself getting a funny feeling in
his stomach. He’d never really felt it
before, but it was the way Naruto described what he felt for Neji. There was no way that he could be feeling
love for Sasuke yet. He didn’t even know
the guy, other than the fact that he liked reading under the shade of the oak
tree and to have Shikamaru run his hands through his hair.
He smirked as Shikamaru won.
“Maybe I’ll get to take you on another time, Sasuke.” He smirked as he slid next to Sasuke to
challenge Shikamaru. “I’d really like to
get the chance to show you some of my skills with a chess board.”
Sasuke smirked in return.
His red head certainly had some spunk.
He was shocked to find he wasn’t as shocked as he thought he would be at
thinking of the red head as his. He’d
never thought of his one night stands as his, but this boy he’d barely even
talked to, was his. “I’d like to test
your skills someday myself.”
