They hadn’t spent even a fraction of the money Itachi had given them, and still it was going to be the most lavish party anyone in their grade had ever thrown. At sixteen, it should have been impossible for them to get alcohol. However, Itachi was 100% behind the welcoming party the boys wanted to have at their apartment, and agreed to get the liquor.
Itachi was currently at the liquor store with his friend Deidara. “So, you really have a crush on Sasuke?” Itachi couldn’t believe his best friend really wanted to date his brother.
Diedara nodded, grabbing random bottles of alcohol because they’d be good for explosions if they weren’t finished. “He’s really cute and after that show he put on at the party, I just want to tie him down to a bed and,” he stopped seeing the protective look in Itachi’s eyes. “I get it. I don’t want to hurt him, ‘Tachi. I just want to get to know him better.”
Itachi snorted. His pretty blond friend had always been the love ‘em and leave ‘em kind. It bothered him that he was showing an interest in Sasuke. That’s not to mention the man’s unhealthy obsessions with fire and explosions. Still, Itachi knew that Deidara wouldn’t do anything to hurt him, and that included just messing with his brother’s feelings for a quick fuck. “You know the rule. I told you I’ll let you talk to him about it, but if he gets upset or hurt by you, I’ll kill you no questions asked.”
Deidara smiled. “’Tachi, I’d never hurt you.” He reached for another bottle of hard liquor. Itachi sighed and put the liquor back, as he had done with all the other bottles. “Why do you keep taking the hard liquor away?”
Itachi smirked. “Sasuke can’t handle alcohol. Naruto told me that beer was okay though. He also said that if Shikamaru knew how drunk Sasuke got at the other party, Sasuke would have been breathing from a tube after the ass kicking he would have gotten.”
Deidara frowned. He really hadn’t gotten a lot of information out of Itachi about this last boyfriend. “So, he still cares what Sasuke does with his life?”
Itachi nodded. “Don’t worry. He’s not going to jump you or something if you do ask Sasuke out. Naruto told me, though, that Shikamaru sincerely cared more for my brother than anyone else ever had. He loved Sasuke with all of his heart. For almost a year Sasuke dated the boy in secret. Shikamaru endured a lot for Sasuke. I think they are finally to a place where they are comfortable as just good friends.” Before Deidara could question the last statement Itachi smirked. “Besides, Shikamaru is dating the Hyuuga from the branch family.”
Deidara shrieked. “What? The kid that turned me down is now with the guy that just dumped Sasuke? That’s too much!”
Itachi smirked as they started grabbing cases of beer. “Yeah, well, from what Naruto says, these two have been in love with each other forever, and just couldn’t find a way to say it.”
Deidara laughed. “Are you tired of Genma? You sure seem to be talking to Naruto a lot.” He winced at the scathing look sent his way. “Maybe not.”
Itachi sighed as they paid for the drinks and headed back to Sasuke’s. “I have seen him a lot over the last couple of weeks since he and Sasuke share that apartment. And, he never shuts up.” Itachi let a soft smile grace his lips. “He is a good guy, but there’s no way I’d ever think of giving up Genma.”
Itachi jumped as he felt familiar chakra before arms wrapped around his waist. “It’s good to know you’d never give me up ‘Tachi.” Genma softly slid his lips down his lover’s neck. “If only you didn’t have your fiancé we might be able to be happy together.”
Itachi leaned back into the familiar hands and welcome touches. His eyes closed as he accepted a soft kiss on his lips. “You’re just lucky she doesn’t love me. That would make our relationship impossible.” He sighed as he pushed away from the relaxing embrace. Deidara wouldn’t say anything, knowing all too well Itachi’s situation, but others may not react well to seeing him in such a casual embrace with someone other than his fiancé.
Genma shrugged his shoulders, but he felt the sorrow with which Itachi pushed him away. “So this party at Sasuke’s that you invited me to, is your fiancé going to be there?”
Itachi smirked and ran his hand discreetly down to his lovers, squeezing softly before letting go and shaking his head just a little. “It’s just me and you big boy.” He knew something that would solve some of the sorrow his lover was feeling. “I did talk to her. She wants separate bedrooms as well and she wants to move her boyfriend in. I told her that’s fine as long as you get to move in with me.”
Genma smiled a real, happy smile. “I can handle being a secret if I get to have you all the time.” He sighed and started walking away. “See you at the party tonight, boys.”
Deidara put a hand on Itachi’s shoulder. “You’re only staying with that chick because it keeps your money, aren’t you?” Itachi nodded. Deidara laughed. “Do you even know her first name?” Itachi shook his head. Deidara snorted, setting his cases down and sitting on them. They had a ways to walk yet, and his arms were tired. “Give me a minute.”
Itachi followed suit. He was sitting near Deidara waiting for his friend to be ready to go again. He smirked when he saw Naruto behind him, heading toward his apartment no doubt. “Naruto,” Itachi called out. “Help Deidara with his super heavy cases. He seems to have trouble lifting them.”
Naruto chuckled as he grabbed the beer cases easily with one hand. “Thanks for doing this, Itachi.” He winked. “Third bedroom is yours tonight, as promised.” He turned his attention to Deidara. “How do you plan on getting Sasuke if you can’t even carry some cases of beer? He does like men you know.”
Itachi snorted hard, and nearly choked as Deidara sputtered incoherently. Naruto just clapped him on the back and started walking back to the apartment. Itachi grabbed his cases and followed. Finally, Deidara seemed to click back on and chased after the two of them. “Hey, that was mean, Naruto-kun.”
Naruto smiled. “That’s why I said it. Someone who dates Sasuke is going to have to put up with me too, and not just because we’re roommates. He’s my best friend, and I have no problem handing out an ass kicking on his behalf.”
Deidara smirked. “That’s twice I’ve been threatened. Am I really that bad?”
“Yes.” Itachi and Naruto deadpanned in unison. The two men glanced at the look of horror on Deidara’s face and started laughing. Well Naruto laughed; Itachi smirked and looked away.
Naruto pushed the door of his apartment open. “Teme, I’m back. Itachi and Deidara are here.” Naruto opened the fridge and starting putting the alcohol in there. He heard Itachi set down his cases and then wander back to the third bedroom. When he and Sasuke got the apartment initially they wanted the third bedroom just for company to crash in if they had a party or something. Now though, they let Itachi use it whenever he felt the need to be away from both his family and fiancé. Genma was always over when Itachi was over, though neither boy minded unless their ‘talks’ got too loud.
Sasuke sighed as he entered the room. “You don’t have to yell, dobe.” He glanced at Deidara and turned away. The blue eye that was visible was watching him with interest. He’d gotten the information out of Naruto only two days after the moron brought it up. He had to admit that Deidara had caught his attention once or twice, based on looks. However, the man’s tendency to blow things up had Sasuke a little on edge. He smirked, noticing Naruto and Itachi had cases of beer but not Deidara. “Did the cases get too heavy for you, Barbie?”
Deidara huffed and glanced at Itachi. “I don’t need to be treated this way.” He smirked and shrugged. “I’ll be back for more tonight though.” He waved as he stepped out of the apartment. Naruto and Itachi stifled their giggles as they noticed Sasuke follow Deidara with his eyes until Deidara was out of sight.

Shikamaru rolled over in bed. Neji still spent the night as much as he did before they became a couple. He smiled. It had been three weeks since they had shared that first kiss and he never grew tired of feeling Neji’s lips under his. There was no pressure to move the relationship farther than kisses. Their friendship had not become strained or weird in any way. Shikamaru sighed contentedly as he wrapped his arms around Neji a little tighter. It felt like his life was perfect.
Neji’s soft laughter reached his ears. “What?” Shikamaru asked half asleep.
Neji pulled himself closer to Shika’s body. “Nothing. You just never lay still for someone who sleeps so much.”
Shikamaru sighed. “Why start complaining now? You never complained before.” He smiled through and buried his face in Neji’s neck. He noticed as Neji’s breathing sped up. Feeling bold and knowing Neji would stop him if anything made him uncomfortable, Shikamaru started nibbling on Neji’s neck while his hands roamed across Neji’s slim, but muscular chest.
Neji pressed up into the light touches of Shikamaru’s hands. He couldn’t stop the moan from the feeling of the lips on his neck and the hand that was running across his stomach, just above the waist of his boxers. He brought his own hands to run softly across and down Shikamaru’s back. Shikamaru never wore more than boxers to bed, and there had been times before they had gotten together when he didn’t even wear that much. He moaned into Shikamaru’s lips as they attached to his own. As much as he didn’t want to stop, he could feel his uncle’s chakra in the house for some reason. “Mm, stop, Shika.” He gulped for air as dignified as he could. “Hiashi is here, for some reason.”
Shikamaru shrugged. “My mom mentioned inviting him over at some point last night. I wasn’t really listening.” He laid his head on Neji’s chest, still trailing his fingers lightly across the exposed skin there. “You can get up if you want. I’m going back to sleep.”
Neji smiled and shook his head softly. “You’re troublesome, Shikamaru.” He stood up and went into the bathroom that joined Shikamaru’s room. He showered quickly and dressed for the day, stepping quietly from Shikamaru’s room without bothering to tie his hair after he’d brushed it. He saw his uncle sitting at the table sharing breakfast with Shikamaru’s parents. “Good morning, Hyuuga-sama.” He bowed politely.
Hiashi returned the bow with a slight nod. “Have you been well? It has been almost a week since you have spent more than your training hours at the complex.”
Neji nodded. “Yes, thank you. The Naras have been very good to me.”
Yoshino brought Neji a plate and some tea. “Not at all, Neji. It’s our pleasure to have you here. You are a wonderful influence on Shikamaru.”
Hiashi nodded. “That is good to hear. The reason for my visit is quite simple. Neji cannot remain in this relationship.”
Neji’s eyes narrowed. Hiashi had never expressed a problem with his sexual preference, which had been made known before he started dating Shikamaru. Hiashi had also never had a problem with Shikamaru himself. This made no sense. “Excuse me, Hyuuga-sama. I don’t believe I heard you right.”
Hiashi frowned. “You heard me right, Neji. I apologize, but I cannot allow this relationship to continue. You must fulfill your duty to the clan and produce heirs. You cannot do this with another male. Children cannot be born out of wedlock to be part of the clan.”
Shikamaru sighed, hearing part of the conversation on his way down. He hadn’t been able to sleep after Neji left and figured he could get breakfast at least if he got out of bed. He and Neji had all ready discussed most of these things. “Neji, you can tell them what we’ve discussed. I’m pretty angry right now, so I think I’d just make things worse. Come to me when you can.” Shikamaru walked over to Neji and gave him an open-mouthed, almost possessive, kiss before walking out his front door.
Hiashi sighed. “I don’t like breaking you two up, Neji, but there are responsibilities.”
Neji nodded. “I am aware of my responsibilities,” he spit out with disdain. “Shikamaru and I discussed these things all ready. The clan says that children cannot be born out of wedlock, but that only means that a child would have to be born after we are wed, Shikamaru and me, that is.” He looked at his uncle who seemed to be contemplating the statement. “As for heirs, Shikamaru would like one as well. Together we decided the best way for this to occur would be hiring a surrogate mother. She could be the mother to both of the children.”
Shikaku looked questioningly at Neji. “You’ve only been together three weeks, but you’ve had this sort of discussion?”
Neji nodded. “We had it a while back, when Shikamaru was with Sasuke, at least the part about children. I told Shikamaru that if we were to contemplate having children, we would have to be married first. Since that is legal in Konoha, I fail to see a problem.”
Hiashi gave a small nod, keeping the smile from his mouth. He had purposely devised this test. He cared more for his nephew than he would ever admit out loud. He did not want to see Neji hurt by someone who had moved on too quickly from a previous relationship. He could see from Neji’s face, Shikamaru’s reaction, and Neji’s determination to speak with him about this face to face that the relationship was built on something more than just a good friendship. There was real longing and trust between them. “Very well. This solution is satisfactory to me.”
Neji smirked. He read the words for what they were meant as. His uncle had been testing this relationship. If only he had figured that out before becoming angry. “If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to find Shikamaru.” He stood and bowed to his uncle. “Hiashi-sama.”
Hiashi allowed a small smile to tug at the corners of his mouth. Shikaku noticed, but remained silent. The man was a pain and it would be troublesome to have his family connected to the Hyuuga family, what with all the decorum, but it would be good to be associated with such a high status family. Not that their family was looked down upon by any means, but they were much less formal and rigid than the Hyuugas. “That was a mean trick, Hiashi-san.” The words were said with a smirk and the voice held no anger.
Hiashi smiled softly. “Yes, but it was necessary. Neji never does anything half way. I doubt your son does either. I also assumed it meant that he didn’t have half way feelings about Sasuke. I wanted to be sure that old wound was healed before Shikamaru and Neji were too serious about each other.”
Yoshino sighed and stood from the table. “As much as men complain about women and not understanding them, I’ll never understand men.” She turned and walked from the room before her nerves made her visibly shake. She hated thinking her son’s emotions had been toyed with, and that her husband had known and said nothing was even more hurtful.
*********
Shikamaru sighed as he sat down near the spring he and Asuma had first spoken by. He needed to calm down and he knew it. He knew he should have stayed with Neji and figured out the situation. He knew he should have shut down his emotions and analyzed the situation like he did with everything else. Somehow though, it was different with Neji. He couldn’t seem to shut off his emotions where Neji was concerned. He sighed as he trailed a hand in the water as he had done when Asuma was there.
Asuma sighed. He had been just walking near his student’s home when he felt an angry vibe rolling off Shikamaru. Not long after he saw the teen rush from his home and straight into the forest. It didn’t take a genius to trace Shikamaru this time. He was upset by something. When the boy dropped down near that spring they had talked at nearly two months ago, he sighed. Finally he stepped out next to Shikamaru, “Want to talk about it?”
Shikamaru sighed and flipped over on his back. “Neji’s uncle came to tell him we couldn’t be together. It seems like I just can’t catch a break if I let my emotions come out.”
Asuma nodded. He’d heard from Kakashi and Iruka how bad it had been with Sasuke the few months before he broke up. Shikamaru had told him the story, but it had been from an almost detached point of view if it weren’t for the tears. “I know Hyuuga Hiashi. He seems like an asshole, but that’s just the rich breeding and clan bullshit. He’s not such a bad guy.” Asuma paused. “Did you know you almost flunked out of the academy?”
Shikamaru quirked a brow. “Yes, but I made sure to keep my grades just above failing.” Shikamaru smirked. “Why? You think that my grades are what makes Neji’s uncle think I’m not worthy of a Hyuuga?”
Asuma laughed before taking a long drag on his perpetual cigarette. “No. I’m just saying, a kid as smart as you should have tried to score higher. After all, when I found out about your IQ, I just about shit a brick.”
Shikamaru laughed then. His tension broke at such an absurd statement. He laughed until he was crying, just letting everything flow from his body. Being a genius meant he usually held back his emotions. He would have to see things from a rational point of view if he could expect to assess the outcomes accurately. When he finally stopped laughing and wiped his eyes he looked at Asuma. “What do you know about my IQ?”
Asuma smiled. “Remember when you had to play me in those games right after we had our teams assigned?” Shikamaru nodded. “It was an IQ test. When I saw that your grades would always remain at just about passing, I asked for permission to consider you as the strong point, intellectually, on a team. Iruka seemed to agree with me, so we did. I gave you the IQ test to prove my point. You did well; we’ll leave it at that.”
Shikamaru nodded. “So I would have been on a different team and considered the weak point if you hadn’t spoken up for me?”
Asuma shrugged. “I don’t know for sure. Iruka really knows his students. He’d never really let you get the short end of the stick. I just don’t know which sensei you would have been assigned to and that could make the difference in the way you were seen. While I know you just don’t like to exert wasteful energy, others may not.”
Shikamaru nodded. “I wish Neji were here. He just gets me. He always has.” A smile crossed Shikamaru’s lips. “I know we’re young still with Neji being 17 and me being 16, but I really like him. I want to marry him. We have something so beyond normal that it could only be described as perfect.”
Neji dropped down into the space by the spring. “You know, Shikamaru,” he started, knowing Asuma was there but not caring, “you are a very difficult person to track down when you want to be.”
Asuma smiled. “I’ll let you two be for now. We have training tonight. Don’t forget.” Shikamaru nodded. Asuma waved as he walked off and Shikamaru rolled over on his stomach to trail a hand in the water again.
Neji smirked. “You really want to marry me?”
Shikamaru nodded. His face and voice were serious when he said, “I’ve never loved someone the way I love you. I think this is what they mean when they say soul mate.” He stood up and wrapped his arms around Neji’s waist, placing a soft kiss against his lips. He smirked, “So, tell me what happened. Then I’ll go do my training and you can do what you need to, before we go to the apartment warming party for Naru and Sas.”
