“Shinobi shouldn’t carelessly show their weaknesses, never know who‘s watching.” She looked at him.
“Love me…?” The two words spoken softly but held so much weight that the tension in the air dissipated immediately.
“Eh?!?” Hinata looked back and forth between the two men in her life. Naruto’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion, he blue eyes on the ground before lifting to Hinata. She glanced back at Kiba who was looking at her. Both of them had spoken at the same time just then, whispered the same two words simultaneously, the tone each male used made the difference. Kiba, pleading with her, Naruto questioning…
“You love me?” His voice came out in utter disbelief.
“Naruto, go back up. I’ll return definitely.” She pursed her lips in. “Kiba and I need to have a talk, and then I will return for our talk.”
“Hinata-”
“I. Will. Be. Back.” She took a few steps toward Kiba, barely noticing the gravel digging into her bare feet. Kiba was blinking his eyes completely unfocused.
“I was first. Your first.” Kiba murmured. Hinata lifted him.
“And that wasn’t fair to either of us.” She vanished. When she finally landed outside of Kiba’s house was when she became aware of his deadweight and needed to drop him.
“Hinata put me down.” Kiba sighed, for a brief moment Hinata thought he was sober already. Once his feet touched the ground he staggered and fell against his house. “You can’t let that fox eat you.”
“Fox?” She frowned looking at Kiba.
“I was there first! He pushed himself to his feet. “I had you first! He can’t just take you away!” Kiba grabbed her shoulders his fingers digging into her flesh. Hinata merely looked at him with blank eyes.
“He isn’t taking me away. I love Naruto. I’ve always loved Naruto. You knew that Kiba.”
“I love you, Hinata. Why don’t you forget him and let me love you!” He shook her.
“No.” She plucked his hands from her shoulders. “I cannot possibly love you more than I already do. If you and I were together it would do more damage than good to us.” She looked as the door opened. “Hana.” Hinata nodded Kiba’s sister.
“I’ll take it from here.”
“Kiba and I will have a proper talk when he’s recovered.” Hinata nodded to Hana.
“Goodnight, Hinata-Chan.”
“Hinata, you can’t go back. That fox will…” She vanished. “… Hurt you.” He sighed.
“Kiba, she just rejected you, plus the fact that she’s never made her way to your room again since that night. I believe it’s safe to assume, her love for you is friendly only.”
“But I love her.”
“I know Kiba. I know.” Hana pushed him on the bed. “Stay there I’ll get some water, you’ll need it. Akamaru stay guard.”

“Naruto?” Hinata stood in the doorway and moved to remove her shoes when she remembered she had recklessly broken up the fight barefoot and just proceeded to dust off her feet. “Naruto?” Her voice grew softer the clang of a glass being place on the counter in the kitchen.
“I’m here.” She heard his feet shuffle to the doorway of the kitchen. The two looked at one another, equally as flushed and embarrassed.
“I’m going to sit.” She bushed off her left foot and moved to sit in her usual seat at his table, across from him. She sat and soon after he sat as well. The air was so tense and thick between them, as if they hadn’t been sexing each other all this time.
“Yeah.” Their knees brushed, they jumped then smiled. “This is stupid.”
“I know.” She murmured softly, much like the beginning, before things got physical, got close.
“Don’t do that.” His hand shot out and grabbed hers. “Don’t shrink back in your shell.” She smiled and played with his hands, their fingers interlacing.
“I love you.” Hinata smiled her face aglow with her embarrassment. “I always have.”
“Hinata.” Naruto just looked at her s little flushed himself.
“From the beginning I’ve always admired you and somewhere I loved you. From a distance of course.”
“So every time you every passed out around me?”
“I admired you. You were amazing. Not perfect, but amazing. When the whole town was against you, you didn’t loathe them; you made a goal to where they would all have to notice you. I cried for you the day Sasuke left. Your dream of being Hokage briefly forgotten in place of being with him.” Her fingers continued to play with his.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Naruto smiled softly thinking back. Over the years she was consistent in her kindness.
“I wasn’t good enough.” His eyes darted to her face in shock and hers rested on the table. Not good enough for him?!? “You were always so sure of yourself, Naruto. You always knew what you wanted and boldly went after it. You worked hard for what you wanted. I never was good enough for anything. I doubt you even knew I existed until the Chuunin exams and I blew it pitifully, but I kept trying.” She sighed. “Trying to better myself. To grow in leaps and bounds so you could see me, really see me and only me.” She pulled her hand back and rubbed her eyes sleepily, but she knew if she went to bed she’d never sleep.
“I’m sorry.” He got up and hugged her from behind. “I’m sorry I never noticed.” He whispered in her ear. “Always “You’re going to acknowledge me! You won’t ever get the chance to ignore me again! I’m going to be great and the whole world will see me.” and I never once noticed there was someone who cared.” Naruto kissed the top of her head. “But my heart changed before my mind could grasp what was going on. In the middle of all of this physical romance, my heart developed real romance for you, Hinata.”
“Naruto.” Her pales eyes turned up to him in shock. Was he going to confess too?
“I love you.” His blue eyes smiled as shock danced in her gaze before tears welled up, and they weren’t the happy kind either. “Hinata?” He released her and she stood.
“Take it back.” Her body was tense. The clock on the wall ticked unbelievably loud as an awkward silence passed.
“What?” He finally asked.
“Take it back. If you take it back I can forget I heard you say that.” Her hands covered her face. “Then I can give you up with no guilt in my heart. I can always say: it’s because I’m not good enough. That I’m used to.”
“Give me up?”
“Naruto… I have to quit being a ninja.” She still couldn’t bring herself to face him, imagining the confused look in those glossy blue eyes. “My father gave me back my birth rites. I can no longer be a Shinobi. My life is about my family.”
“What? But what about what you want? I don’t see the problem we love each other, we should be happy.”
“I’m going to be getting married to some guy I don’t know. He could be younger he could be older, I don’t know!” She all but yelled and crossed the room to stand before the open window, the cool air doing wonders for her flushed skin.
“What?”
“Before I’m Hinata, I’m a Hyuuga. Hyuuga Hinata. It’s about the prestige, and what connections I can make in my lifetime. It’s not about me. It’s about the good I can bring to the name. How many heirs I can create. I can’t disgrace the name, it was easier when he disliked me, my father, but for whatever reason his heart changed and this love can’t happen.” Her hands came up to wipe away her tears. “Dammit I thought I was done with all the crying!”
“I hate your family.” Naruto turned her to him and hugged her again. “That thing with Neji and now this.”
“I know.” Hinata sighed and whispered against his chest in between her hiccups and tears sighed. “So take it back, please….Naruto-Kun….”
Kun….?

“Hinata-Sama, wake up.” Saiyuri shook the young mistress gently. “The time for resting is no more. You have to start getting ready; your first suitor is nearly here for supper.”
“I’m awake Saiyuri.” Hinata sat up with faint circles under her eyes. Her and Naruto never made it back to sleep, rather they stayed awake dying to say things to one another but the words were lost and could only manifest themselves in her tears and his whisperings of nothing in her hair, a kiss or two placed on her wet cheeks then to her lips. Mostly they just held one another. When she left he did tell her I will never take it back…
“Come along your bath is waiting for you. Are you feeling well?” The older woman knelt to look at Hinata.
“Well.”
“Did you not rest well during your nap?” The woman slid her thumb tracing the darkness beneath her eyes.
“I rested as well as I could.”
“I know, it will be difficult for you to say farewell to your reckless lifestyle-”
“Saiyuri, I’d rather not.” Hinata rose and made her way to bathe for the evening, her footsteps as light as the mistress and heiress to a prestigious family should be.

“You saw them?” TenTen rested against the tree running her fingers through Neji’s long dark hair.
“Who could miss them? They were standing in front of the window.” Neji sighed. “I wasn’t positive if their relationship had grown to one of such intimacy. I wasn’t entirely sure their relationship had grown at all really.”
“Eight times…” TenTen smiled. “I feel for them. I was really rooting for Hinata and Naruto, They are opposites in every way, and compliment each other very well.” TenTen sighed running her fingers over Neji’s pale cheek. “She’s become stronger in voicing her thoughts and she no longer mumbles so softly.”
“If it’s Naruto, I can accept the relationship.” Neji agreed. “I highly disapproved of her relationship with the Dog. Lay with dogs and get fleas, right?” TenTen snickered.
“Neji!” She struck his shoulder lightly. She laughed and he smiled something only TenTen saw.
“He seeks to imitate dogs so it does him a great compliment if I say that.” Neji rolled onto his back and looked up at the trees.
“I’ve been thinking.” TenTen sighed. “Naruto is the Yondaime’s son. Doesn’t that give him some sort of prestige in Konoha?” Silence passed.
“What are you thinking, TenTen?”
“I’ve only been thinking because their relationship is new and Naruto might not want to but… couldn’t he marry Hinata?”
“Uncle won’t go for it.” Neji sighed. “He still is the fox and while many accept him now, some still oppose.”
“I mean think about it! Naruto, son of a Hokage. He’s got a family of status, but because it’s still pretty new to everyone, especially after years of hating him, its still not high class status, like the Hyuuga.”
“TenTen…”
“And we all know that he IS seriously being considered for the candidacy of Hokage since the old farts that were ones the elder council are dying out and the new members are a little keener on him.”
“He can’t be Hokage.” Neji sighed. “He’s not even Jounin.”
“Details. We all know his skill is above that but he goes away too much for training he misses the examinations.” She raised her arms above her head and stretched. “But think about it, there is some weight to this working out, if only we knew for sure how Naruto felt about Hinata and about marriage.”
“Naruto is the marrying type.” Neji sat up. “I can see him wanting a large family too. He‘d need a female built for children.” Neji rubbed his head
“Which Hinata is! With those childbearing hips you know?”
“TenTen…” Neji groaned. Its true Hinata is a girl built for children, but he didn’t want to think about Hinata engaging in the act of creating so many.
“So all that matters are his feelings for Hinata and if he’s willing to deal with her father.” TenTen rose.
“Come on, TenTen, we’re meeting the first possible suitor tonight.”
“Yeah, yeah.”

“You told her that?!?” Ino and Sakura looked at the blonde young man who was looking miserably into the broth of his instant ramen.
“Naruto…” Sakura looked at him. “What did she say?”
“She told me to take it back.” Both girls looked at one another.
“How cruel.” They both murmured.
“Ino, why are you here?” Naruto sat up and started eating, forcing himself the females knew.
“Oh, well, I haven’t been doing well in the romance department either and I figure if I hang around forehead girl I’ll realize how good I’ve got it, small forehead and all.”
“You? Trouble in romance? You always have men chasing you.” Naruto slurped up some of his noodles and set it down. It just wasn’t working today.
“That’s the trouble you see, I’m love with someone else.” She sighed just as someone knocked on the door. Naruto got up and answered the door.
“Kiba…” Naruto looked at the Dog-Nin was, ordinary looking, like a civilian.
“I came here last night, didn’t I?” He continued to scratch his head.
“Yeah.”
“Listen, I’m sorry about that. Just, it’s not easy being rejected.” Kiba said. “And I kept thinking if I wait it out her feelings will change toward me.”
“So in a sense you’ve been experiencing what Hinata’s felt for Naruto all these years.” Sakura and Ino spoke up together in perfect unison. They glance at one another then back to the doorway where Naruto and Kiba were talking it up.
“I see what you mean.” Kiba sighed looking away. “Naruto, did you know you had food out here.” He took a step to the side and lifted a bag that had been sitting off to the side.
“What?” He took the bag and smiled softly recognizing the cartons.
“I’m sure it’s cold now.” Kiba looked away. “Luckily it wasn’t an exploding tag or something.”
“Yeah I guess so. Want to come inside; we’re having a lover scorned pity party.” Naruto stepped aside.
“I don’t think so.” Kiba looked away. “I have to find Akamaru, I mentioned bath and he took off running.”
“Oh.”
“Naruto, Hinata is going to get married to some weirdo not worthy of her.” Kiba sighed. “I was angry because of that, and because in the end she ran to you and not me. Because she ran to you I’m going to ask you this. Could you stand it if she married someone else?”
“What?” Naruto half chuckled rubbing his head.
“It’s not a laughing matter. I don’t know how you feel about her but you don’t have much time, so could you live with the fact that she will marry some other man unworthy of her time? Could you stand it if she shared some other man’s bed?” That got the desired reaction. “Have some other man’s children? Spend the rest of her days in that loveless house in a loveless marriage?” With that Kiba just walked away. The two girls looked a teach other.
“Naruto, are you okay?” Sakura looked at him.
“I’m going to heat this up.” Naruto closed the door.
“It’s probably breakfast food.” Sakura called but he shuffled on.
“Breakfast?” Ino nudged Sakura.
“Hinata.” Sakura murmured. “Every time she spends the night.”
“They can’t end this way, Sakura.” Ino sighed sadly.
“I know they can’t, we have to get a hold of TenTen.” Sakura rose. “Naruto, Ino and I are leaving.”
“Okay.” He came back out. “Sorry, I wasn’t so much fun today. Didn’t sleep to well.”
“Spare us the details of your sex life!” Ino’s usual loud self came back and she shoved the boy.
“Bye, Naruto. Cheer up; tomorrow I’ll even train with you.” Sakura sighed. “That will cheer you up. Tomorrow regular time.”
“Okay.” Naruto smiled softly at her and saw the two girls off.
*~*~*~
“It was a pleasure meeting you.” Hinata bowed to the young man. He was taller than she and had some crazy upper body strength. His whole body was like an inverted triangle. His chest broad, his arms large and the rest was small in comparison.
He came to dinner in formal attire but the sleeves removed, perhaps for showing off his large biceps. The man was positively in love with himself, and if he didn’t say it he sure thought that Hinata was a lucky gal to be considered his bride. She hated him and all his conceit came in the form of his finding any reason possible to flex for them. He wasn’t too bright either, Hinata quickly noticed.
“Hinata-San.” He spoke flashing her a Gai-like grin.
“Lan-San?” She looked at him.
“I want you to look past my fabulous good looks and sexy body.” There he goes again, flexing. “And try to know the true me. Next time we meet I mean.”
“Of course.” She looked at him, her voice was soft again, she could see her father’s disgusted look as he listened on.
“I have a heart large enough to love you and this village you love so much.” He looked her in the eye. “For you.” He produced a small box. “Until next time.”
“Go safely.” Hinata smiled and waved the way a good woman should.
“You didn’t embarrass us.” Hiashi muttered turning away. “Now do something about that shyness and soft voice and we may get somewhere.” He walked off.
“I don’t like him for you.” TenTen said suddenly smoothing the pink kimono she wore.
“Nor do I. He reminds me of Gai-Sensei.” Hinata opened the box, inside was a small white flower with yellow dying the middle of it preserved in the glass.
“Oh my gosh! I couldn‘t put my finger on it but he does!” TenTen struck her fist to her palm and looked at Neji whose expression said he agreed as well.
“Interesting.” She closed the box.
“What was it?” TenTen looked at her.
“I attach myself to you, he says with this little Jasmine.” She scoffed in a way unlike Hinata. “Of course he’d say that. He’s trying to make it into a big family. Good looking and knows it, somewhat kind but definitely not bright. If he wants better chances he should pick out the gift himself.” She put it on a stand nearby and proceeded to her room.
“Hinata…”
“TenTen, come on. We have visitors.” Neji looked outside where Sakura and Ino stood.
“Coming!” She lifted her kimono a little and walked on out with her boyfriend. She knew the look in the two girl’s eyes. They were planning something.
*!*!*!*!*!
“I will not take it back…” She sat in the bath, one of the servants scrubbing her back.
“Did you say something Hinata-Sama?” The young woman spoke up.
“No, I didn’t say anything. Nothing of importance.” She sighed. Those six words danced in her head even after all this time. It’s been already a month and a half and in that time her father had chosen three suitors for her to marry. Lan of course being one of them. Her father loved the fact he wasn’t too bright and was easy to control. The other two a bit wiser but they were completely on the side of the Hyuuga line and would agree to anything.
They were all stupid Hinata concluded; willing to subject themselves to anything so they could be permanently tied to the Hyuuga name. Tonight would be the night the man would be chosen. It was all happening so fast but it had to happen or else she gain the nerve to rebel and her father couldn’t have that. It would be a black mark on the Hyuuga name for the heir to rebel. She guessed that why he had hoped for her death, it’s easier if something happened.
“Come on Hinata-Sama.”
‘I will not take it back…’
“Yes, yes.” She was led off to a room where TenTen was already dressed and was having her hair styled. Naruto…
“Hinata, I have some news that might cheer you up.” TenTen beamed.
“I could use it.” Hinata sighed.
“Neji and I are finally engaged!”
“Oh!” Hinata smiled truly for the first time in a while as she was finally dried off and dressed in a white yukata. “TenTen!” Hinata stepped off the pedestal and hugged the girl before rushing back on so the maids wouldn’t fuss.
“I know! Of course our wedding will have to wait as to not over shadow yours in the Konoha community and you’re the first I told.
“Can you get us two glasses of wine?” Hinata asked a maid who looked confused. “The western drink! Tell them I asked for them!”
“Wine, Hinata?”
“We have to have a small celebration.” Hinata beamed and TenTen smiled warmly at her as all the maids at once proceeded to dress her, do her make up and hair. The glasses came and TenTen grabbed them both. And proceeded to hand one to Hinata. The two toasted and took healthy swallows, and finally they were summoned by Neji to go.
“She ordered the wine like you said.” TenTen whispered in is ear when Hinata too her seat hear her father.
“I told you. She enjoys the stuff.”
“I do too actually. It’s not bad.” TenTen sat tucking her kimono properly. “Sakura said about mid dinner it should kick in. So when will you really propose to me?” She laughed at the face he made just then. “I’m teasing, Neji. I’m teasing.”
