Naruto couldn't believe his eyes, he couldn't believe that Sasuke had finally returned to them, and seemingly unscathed. He hadn't been sure what to do when Tsunade had told him his former teammate had returned, and that the council was still debating what should be done with the traitor. They had ruled out death as an option rather quickly- the Sharingan was too much of a powerful advantage to lose like that -and that fact had relaxed the blond a great deal. Still, there were many options still left, and some of them were downright painful to hear.
For the moment though, Sasuke was ordered to have an escort, and given their history and Naruto's current situation, Tsunade had decided that he would be the best person to assign. Not to mention the joy she had told him he was free to have gloating over the bastard's final return. No one knew that Sakura was Sasuke's child yet, and Naruto was still too nervous to tell them, especially now. If the council knew that there was already an Uchiha heir maybe they would change their mind about Sasuke and put him to death anyways. That was too much of a risk.
Even now, he just wanted to push down the bars that separated them and pull Sasuke close, because if he held the boy tight enough he'd never have to let go. He didn't though, he just smiled as lightly as he could, and opened the door.
X
Sasuke was sore, his muscles stiff from sleeping on the hard cot of the detention room. He still moved fine though, following Naruto through the dark streets. He was half listening to Naruto's words, even though the blond wasn't doing much beyond babbling about the way he couldn't go on missions anymore, at least missions outside of the village. He'd gathered that the Hokage had made looking after Sasuke a mission for the blond, and he wondered how much she actually knew about the two of them. Naruto assured him that he hadn't told anyone about Sasuke's relation to their child, but he wasn't sure that Sakura hadn't told the woman herself, or that the woman hadn't figured it out on her own.
The other half of his mind was still occupied with the jutsu he'd been putting together, all of the information he'd been collecting for so long. He wasn't entirely sure it would work, or even be safe, but that wasn't the part that worried him the most. He had as much faith in it as he had in any other jutsu he'd never done before. The part that made him so nervous, the part that led to his inattention to his surroundings and the way he was anxiously fiddling with his fingers right now, was the implementation of that jutsu.
He'd tried to figure out a way to make it work without having sex, because sex was messy and inaccurate and emotionally tangled. Sex was something that Uchiha Sasuke did not want to think about. His experience with it was small, mostly second hand. He was well educated on the matter, and he had had sex with Sakura after all, but that hadn't been in the least enjoyable for him. He'd been worried the whole time about what he was doing, worried about the consequences and the results he hoped for.
That kind of sex he could deal with, he'd come out of it alive. It was just that having sex with Naruto would be different. Yes, there was the obvious reasons. Naruto was a boy after all, and that would make things mechanically different. That wasn't the biggest thing though. He found that the more he thought about it, the more he'd worked to bypass the sexual act with this jutsu, the more he realized that he wanted to have sex with Naruto. He knew the blond wouldn't break, no matter how hard he pushed, and he knew that the blond was the only one who actually understood him, knew his secrets, saw the darkness inside of him, and stayed anyways. Not only stayed, followed him, tracked him down, tried to bring him back.
Sasuke would be the first to admit he didn't know much about love, but if that wasn't some sort of love he'd shoot himself. That had to be love, right? The blond thought about him that much, wanted him back that much. They were comfortable around each other, they knew each other better than anyone else.
Sasuke felt himself pulled from those thoughts by an irritated looking Naruto, though the boy's eyes were still smiling. He looked around him and felt something grow cold inside. They were in the Uchiha district, he recognized it, but it wasn't how things had been. This wasn't the district he had walked slowly through when he'd left, dead and empty and lonely, this was the district how he'd remembered it as a child. Even in the growing darkness around them, there were lights on in the houses, and delicious smells wafting from open windows, the sounds of people talking and children laughing. He felt for a moment like this had to be some sort of hallucination, some sort of cruel joke, but Naruto's face told him it was real. There they were, standing on the steps of one of the small houses, Naruto waiting for some sort of response from him. Sasuke smiled sheepishly.
"What?" The blond sighed, but the irritation grew thinner over his face. He shook his head.
"I asked you if you wanted to pick up anything. Your house isn't ready yet, there's still some things we need to finish before you can move back in so you... uh..." The blond was blushing a little now, and Sasuke felt his mouth grow dry. It was adorable. "You're gonna stay with us for awhile then at least, we've got an extra futon and everything. It's a bit messy though, and kinda smaller than what you're used to I guess, but..." The boy's voice was nervous and odd, and Sasuke felt that cold returning, jealousy and sadness flashing in his gut for a second.
"Us, Naruto?" Sasuke tried to keep his voice flat as possible. A flutter of anxiety sprung up in his chest. What if Naruto was already involved with someone else? Someone who'd been here? He looked the blond straight in the face, and watched the boy's blue eyes widen for a second before they looked back at him.
"Ye-yeah. Me and Sakura. No one else lives there, it's a bit small for that. But we get by." Sasuke found himself relaxing a little, and a smile crept over his face. Naruto followed suit, the tension and nervousness suddenly gone. "Oh yeah, you haven't seen her yet! Iruka has her for the moment, while I was with the Hokage getting this mission. Come on, lets go get her!"
Tanned fingers grabbed his wrist, and before Sasuke had even figured out exactly where they were going he was already getting pulled back down the familiar little road and out into the village's main residential neighborhood again. He felt a flush rise on his face, happy that he was going to see his daughter now but almost more happy that Naruto was touching him like that, even as casual as it was.
He was so engrossed in that contact, the way the fingers wrapped tightly around his wrist- warm and strong -that he ran right into Naruto's back when the boy stopped at the gate of a rather large house, pressing the buzzer with a wide smile. Sasuke felt that nervousness spike in him again as it opened, the man inside scowling a little at him before smiling at Naruto, greeting the blond and stepping aside so that Naruto could drag them through the entry way and up the little stairs.
Sasuke's nervousness at Naruto's touch, and his fear of Iruka's disapproving face vanished as he saw the little bundle lying on the bed, the child still with sleep. Her hair was dark and lay around her face in soft waves. He almost couldn't breathe then, she was so beautiful to him, and he couldn't move either, watching Naruto cross the space to sit beside her. The movement rocked the mattress a little, and he watched as she stirred, pale little fists scrubbing at her eyes as she came awake, clear green blinking sleepily up at the blond as her face grew into a little smile, mouth opening in happy little noises.
"Hey Sakubun. I have someone here who wants to meet you." She sat up, eyes turning to study Sasuke with a single minded wonder as she gripped Naruto's shirt with chubby little hands, pulling herself close to the blond shyly. Naruto laughed as he scooped her up into his arms, standing and whirling her around in a circle before settling her against his chest, head lolling into the crook of his neck. Sasuke couldn't control the wonder he felt at the sight. Naruto stepped closer to him, moving so that Sakura could watch him, beaming brightly.
"Sakura, this is Sasuke. He's a good friend of mine and he'd gonna come live with us for awhile." She was silent, her eyes peaking at him in little bursts as she wrapped her arms around Naruto's neck, little hands grabbing at his bright hair as he rocked her a little. Sasuke opened his mouth, but no words came past the lump building in his throat. Sakura yawned widely before closing her eyes and turning her face into the blond's skin. Naruto laughed again, a little nervous this time. Sasuke ignored it though.
"Well, I think we should get her home to bed, don't you Sasuke? Will you take her for a second so I can go thank Iruka?" The girl clung onto Naruto, obviously wary of Sasuke, but let herself be handed gently over anyways. Sasuke swallowed hard as he felt her heavy in his arms, weight balanced against his hip as she grabbed lightly on his shoulders. Then Naruto disappeared out the door and the two of them were alone, Sasuke studying her with wide, warm eyes, and Sakura avoiding looking back at him, wiggling a little in discomfort. It made him feel strangely distant to see her like this, not at all what he'd imagined when he thought of returning to Naruto and their child but not as intensely unpleasant as what he'd expected.
"Hey little girl..." Those were the only words he could get himself to say, not knowing how to continue, letting the silence ebb up around him, silently thanking whatever powers existed for this precious little body in his arms.

Naruto had been exhausted when they got home, and had put Sakura to bed immediately, the girl having fallen back asleep on their way home. The house was smaller than Sasuke had expected it to be, despite Naruto's warning. It had two tatami bedrooms upstairs, one for Sakura and one for Naruto, and a single big room downstairs, a small kitchen on one wall. It was odd for Sasuke to be here, he recognized it, the style of all the buildings in the Uchiha quarter, but it had to be one of the smallest. Naruto had told him that the Hokage had re-zoned most of the district, re-appropriating the land, and he'd sounded so proud when he told the Uchiha that he'd managed to save the main house, the house that Sasuke had grown up in, from being touched all these years that Sasuke hardly had the heart to tell him he didn't know if he'd be able to set foot in there again.
Sasuke had welcomed the silence that came after Naruto's return, standing quietly in the doorway to the slightly smaller front bedroom, the one that Naruto slept in. He liked this room, the pictures and clothing scattered around it, books and a weapons maintenance kit lying on a table in one corner, made the room seem homey, lived in in a way that he'd never really seen when he'd been to these houses as a child.
The blond hid a yawn behind his hand, dragging two clean, crisply folded futons out of the large closet and setting them up on the floor. Sasuke just watched him, the way the boy's shirt rode up a little as he moved, the way his ass bobbed as he bent to straighten the beds, throwing down pillows on top of them, the way his hair slid down into his face in places and how he pushed the stray locks back every time, tucking them behind his ear.
He felt a longing building in him at the sight, a hungry little clawing inside, and he knew he must have been staring because Naruto turned to shoot him a questioning glance, blushing darkly with wide eyes as he read Sasuke's face. The blond cleared his throat, straightening to fiddle with the hem of his shirt nervously, refusing to met the Uchiha's eyes.
"So, uh... pick whichever one you want. I think I'm gonna go draw a bath and clean up before bed." With that he darted from the room and Sasuke was left there alone, leaning against the door frame, thinking about the way his former teammate's body moved.
X
Sakura had warmed up to Sasuke quickly, though neither of them had told her yet that Sasuke was her father. She was probably too young to understand, and neither one quite knew if they wanted to tell other people yet. So far there were only two people in the world besides them who knew the girl's true heritage, and both of them were from the monastery, present at her birth. Team Hebi may have figured it out, they weren't stupid after all, but if they had they'd kept it to themselves. Sasuke had never thought that he'd enjoy children this much, teasing the little girl lightly as he sat across from her at the little table downstairs. It was almost lunch time and Naruto was upstairs putting away the clean laundry from the line in the backyard.
Sasuke still felt that sense of wonder whenever he watched her, playing with the blocks and dolls and little toys that were scattered over the floor of the living room downstairs. He didn't miss the little stuffed fox she hauled around either, apparently a gift from their former teammate's parents, and one that Sasuke wasn't quite sure how to take. Naruto had told him early on how much they had helped him when he'd first returned to the leaf, and while Sasuke was glad of this- it helped to ease the twisting little snakes of guilt that gripped him at being gone so long -he was also oddly jealous, protective of the blond boy.
Sasuke was nothing if not suspicious of the villagers upon his return, uncomfortable with the way that many of them merely accepted him as if nothing had happened, while they still had a sort of simmering mistrust of Naruto, even though the blond had shown them so much loyalty, so much unconditional love. At first, he'd been tempted to leave again even so soon after his return, this village didn't deserve his time if this was how they treated one of their most powerful and certainly most devoted shinobi, and if Naruto had been anyone else he would have just taken the boy, and Sakura, and disappeared. Naruto was Naruto though, and the boy would never stand for that, that bright and undying loyalty burning hotly within him would not allow it.
So Sasuke had stayed, how could he do anything else? That last year spent in the defeat of his brother- that last year with that much more at stake for this mission, that much more to protect waiting for him once he'd completed it -had taught him many things about himself. He knew now that Naruto, and their smiling beautiful daughter, were something he could not live without, so he had to stay.
The kitchen around them was relatively silent, Sakura's babble fading to a low whisper with Sasuke often now, and said blond took that moment of silence to return to the kitchen, smiling and talking animatedly about what they might do with their weekend. This mission to watch Sasuke paid rather well, and while Sasuke had told the blond a thousand times that the Uchiha fortune- still intact and relatively untouched, he'd had better things to worry about before he'd left than spending money -was available to him now, so money was no object, the blond had laughed uncomfortably and told Sasuke they didn't need that money.
Sasuke smiled at the blond's excited words though, and it grew a little as that energy spread back to Sakura, whose smile grew to match Naruto's as she waved her arms at the boy in great arcs. Sasuke watched in amusement as Naruto scooped her up, swinging the girl through the air and back down, drawing out great squeals of joy, before depositing her heavily in Sasuke's lap with a smile.
"Maybe we should go to a hot-spring, like one with an inn or something. I've never been to a nice one, only the ones we've stayed at on missions." Naruto settled back against the counter as he talked, he picked up the little pile of laundry he'd dumped there in favor of the little giggling girl, folding it absently.
"Hey! We stayed at a perfectly nice little inn on our way to the monastery! It was pretty fancy too!" Naruto's smile twitched a little.
"I was a bit preoccupied then, I didn't get to enjoy it very much. Besides, you were all 'rush rush rush, no dawdling,' that makes relaxing and having a good time really difficult, you know? Though I don't know if we can find a nice hot-spring inn that'll let the little munchkin in. They're kinda strict about no kids under whatever age most places." Sasuke smirked as he stood, cradling the toddler against his hip bone, her hands fisting the soft cotton of his shirt.
"I was actually thinking we could ditch her. When was the last time you spent time with people your own age, Naruto?" He saw the blond's mouth opening and he cut the boy off with a wagging finger on his free hand, a finger that Sakura didn't fail to reach out and capture with tiny hands. "I mean people without kids, Naruto, and Iruka doesn't count. He might as well be parent to all those little academy brats he drags around."
Naruto pouted as he turned back to the laundry, and Sasuke couldn't help but widen his smirk. He knew he'd defeated the blond then.
"I just think it's be a good thing for you to get out there and relax, be a person instead of a parent for one little weekend. I know how hard you work here, keeping everything in order around the house and taking care of Sakura." He crossed the small space between them, wresting his hand from the baby's tenacious grasp to push a strand of hair out of the blond's face. Their eyes met and Sasuke knew he'd sealed the victory.
"I just think you need a break, that's all..." Naruto sighed, a real smile coming across his face as he reached out, taking the giggling baby from Sasuke's arms, leaving the laundry half folded.
"I guess I could find someone to watch her for one weekend, but you better make it worth my while, Uchiha. I wanna be damn well relaxed by the end of it, you hear?" Sasuke chuckled as he followed the blond out the back door, and into the warmth of the summer evening. He'd make damn well sure Naruto was melting before their return.
X
Sasuke scowled, shoving his hands deeper into his pockets as he followed the blond closely through the crowded midday streets of Konoha's market. He normally spent as little time out of their little house as he could, though he made sure that he did about half of the shopping and errands to give Naruto a little time off here and there but he shopped as close to home as he could and he never dallied to talk to people like Naruto did.
Even though a full bag of vegetables hung from Sasuke's arm, this wasn't really a shopping trip, or one of the walks that the blond liked to take their daughter on in the afternoons. This was business, partly signaled by the fact that the aforementioned girl was not with them. Sakura's parents had come over earlier to pick her up, and Sasuke had tried to hide his mistrust for them as well as he could. He understood why they wanted to spend time with her though, and he also understood that she couldn't really be around for their meeting with the Hokage which they were rather leisurely strolling towards.
Sasuke was nervous for the meeting, though he didn't let on. It was essentially an official request for Sasuke to be able to leave the direct confines of the village. The terms of his return, as they had been laid out by the council and Tsunade herself, required that he have an escort of one high leveled ninja while inside the village- until such a time as he proved his allegiance to Konoha once again -but all trips outside the village would have to go through the Hokage, and would be dealt with on a case by case basis. So far he had made no such trips, and he knew how the woman felt about him. He also knew how she felt about Naruto though, so he hoped that she would see how good this would be for the blond and grant it. Naruto, at least, seemed fairly confident that she would.
Still, as Naruto hurried up the stairs to her office, happily greeting the ANBU stationed outside, Sasuke couldn't help the nervous twist in his stomach. This weekend was important for him, but it was also a chance for Naruto to have a rest. The blond almost never did that, and it was starting to show in little ways. He stayed well back, arms crossed across his chest, as he watched Naruto and Tsunade making affectionate small talk, bickering like a mother and child. It wasn't until he politely cleared his throat that Naruto straightened from where he'd been leaning forwards onto the broad thick wood of the hokage's desk with a nervous grin.
"Yes, well, we've come here to ask a little favor from you. I know you guys didn't really want Sasuke going out of the village much, but we were thinking of maybe going away for the weekend, and going somewhere in the mountains. Whadduya say, huh?" He beamed at Tsunade, as she folded her hands over her face, looking from one to the other with skeptical eyes.
"Was this your idea, brat?" Sasuke stepped forwards a little, his hands gripped together behind his back, meeting her eyes.
"It was Naruto's idea to take a weekend off, but it was my idea to get out of town for it. Naruto needs a break, and I think a relaxing little vacation would be good for him." Tsunade lifted one perfectly shaped eyebrow.
"I agree, the brat probably does need a break. I guess a few days couldn't hurt..." Naruto didn't wait for her to finish her sentence, already diving back over the table to hug her, babbling excitedly about the trip. She just stood, ushering the two of them from the room with a roll of her eyes. It wasn't until they'd already reached the door, Naruto already halfway down the hallway in his excitement that she stopped, fingers gripping Sasuke's arm suddenly, and he met cold eyes.
"If this is some sort of a trick, Uchiha, if he's hurt or you try to run off again or something, I swear to god nothing will stop me from hunting you down. I'll tell you right now, I don't trust you as far as I could throw you, but maybe, if this whole thing goes well, I might consider moving the reintroduction process along." Then suddenly, she was smiling again, and Naruto was jogging back around the corner, looking over at the two of them questioningly. Her hand was gone from his arm in a flash as she turned back into her office.
"Just something to think about, Uchiha. Have fun!"
X
Sasuke didn't speak much as they headed back across town towards the district of his childhood home. Naruto babbled on about where they should visit, and about all of the places he wanted to see, and how maybe they should move around a little, see more than one place. The bag of vegetables they had bought earlier seemed heavier now, and he switched it from arm to arm, fidgeting with his hands shoved deeply into his pockets.
He knew that the Hokage didn't like him very much, or trust him. He could see why though. Just looking at the facts in a detached way, he probably wouldn't have liked himself much either. He could also clearly see how much she cared for Naruto- her thinly veiled threat and the offered bargain showed much more concern for him than for Sasuke -and that was why he was willing to overlook the hostility.
As he listened to the endless, inane chatter, and watched Naruto bouncing slightly next to him, smiling at everyone they passed, he found the tight tension that had wound in his spine loosen and relax. Naruto had that effect on him, especially now that things had returned to how they had been, without the blond chasing him and Sasuke having to stay one step ahead.
That thought made some of the tension return though, because things weren't the way they used to be. They had a kid now, for one. Sasuke couldn't go running off, even if he did trust that Naruto could do fine raising Sakura without him, maybe even better... a cynical voice mumbled in the back of him head. He had to stay now, for good. And he was considering things now that he wouldn't have dreamed of considering before. He wanted to have another child. With Naruto. Only with Naruto this time. And it wasn't just for the sake of creating an heir as it had before.
When he'd impregnated Sakura, their teammate not their child, he'd done it for the simple reason of having a child. Now, though the hoped effect would be the same and the method was far more guaranteed- the jutsu was designed with the express purpose of creating a child after all -the reasons seemed more complex. It wasn't about an heir anymore, it was about emotions, and family, and the future they could have together.
All of those were things that Sasuke hadn't even let himself think about a year or two ago, let alone hope for. He had two missions to complete in his lifetime, and then that was all that he had let himself hope for. Now, though those things still hurt a little to think about- everything that he'd had and lost, and he knew how much that could hurt -he found that every second he spent with Naruto, those wounds healed a little more, the scars seemed to fade into the background. For the first time he felt that the happiness he'd had as a child, all of the things he hadn't let himself hope for, those could all be his again.
"Sasuke!" The sound of his name being shouted very close to his face startled him out of his thoughts, Naruto's nose less than six inches away from his own. He felt the blush rising hot in his cheeks as his eyes widened a bit at their sudden closeness.
"Hm?" Naruto was scowling slightly as he backed away, his arms crossed in front of him.
"You haven't been listening to anything I've been saying, have you?" Sasuke bit his lip lightly, wondering if there was a way to weasel himself out of the situation. Naruto's face softened slightly though, as he looked over into those warm blue eyes.
"Ah well, I guess I can't expect much from you, antisocial bastard. Just so you know though, it is customary for you to listen when someone's talking to you." He could hear the teasing note in the blond's voice, and it brought a small smirk to his face.
"Well, maybe if you talked a little less I'd be able to pay attention, idiot." The playful insult caused Naruto's eyes to narrow a little, but he still followed when Sasuke started walking again, turning them down the little road that led to the small house they now shared.
