Chapter 7

The girls were asleep. He sat in the rocking chair closest to the window and sighed. Naruto must have put them to bed. Or Iruka. Sasuke looked out at the night sky and frowned. Had he really pulled Naruto under him in his sleep? No. It just wasn't possible. He didn't move much in his sleep if at all. The sharingan user looked towards the cribs that held the one thing he would die for on the earth. He didn't know why he would have but for some reason he couldn't fathom, he would have.

He read in his book that it was because they had grown inside of him, that he had, even if he didn't want it, a connection with them. He stood and walked over to stand in between the cribs and looked at both sleeping babies. He could feel it. The connection. He didn't want it, would give anything to be rid of it but he couldn't deny that he cared for the sleeping children that had come from his body. Bending down towards Hikime, Sasuke placed a gentle kiss on her head and then did the same with Aito. When they came into the world, even though he should have killed them, he promised he would give them a life they could be happy with. He just hoped he could fulfill that promise, or find someone who could.

It was sometime later that night, or early morning, that Naruto came stumbling into the house. He went straight for the fridge. He pulled out some left over ramen and ate it...no, he inhaled it. Then, he grabbed a glass of water, stripped off his shoes, tossed them by the door and scampered into the living room. The Uchiha just watched all of this and what he couldn't see, he could hear. Naruto's feet came up and a hand went over his head, blocking out the light. it wasn't soon after that Sasuke could have swore he heard slight snores. Where had he been? Not that he cared any, but he'd been gone most of the night and he looked...and smelled...different. His brows coming together in a slight frown, Sasuke gently put down his book and stood, walking quietly over to the couch. Just as he bent down to examine the blond, something sharp was poking his throat. His eyes trailed down.

"Don't even think about it teme." Hokage's above, he'd never even seen Naruto move. The thought sent a small chill down his spine but he stood and moved to his chair. Nothing scared him, other than the thought that he might lose the girls but that...that had scared him. He would never admit it and he was having a hard time digesting the fact himself. Naruto's hand moved slowly this time and Sasuke kept his eyes glued. Naruto just slipped the kunai back inside of his jacket and his hand went back to resting over his stomach. Soft snores soon followed. Shaking his head, Sasuke picked up his book but wasn't really paying attention to it. What the hell just happened?

Twenty minutes later the crying started, again. Naruto was up in seconds stretching and scratching his head. "I got 'em." He didn't even wait for Sasuke to answer. The blond left the living room and started for the nursery. the girls were kicking and on their back's screaming up a sotrm. He picked up Aito first and then grabbed Hikime. They were sniffling and then went back to crying. Naruto sighed and walked to the rocking chair with them. Their diapers didn't smell dirtied and they had eaten enough to sustain a small army so he knew they weren't hungry. Maybe they had a nightmare? He didn't dwell on the fact too much but instead, he started rocking and humming a tune to them. They went back to sniffles and had a hard time keeping their eyes open after a few minutes. Naruto just smiled and closed his eyes, still rocking.

Sasuke just stood there, mouth agape and watched with a look that could have been mistaken for abject horror but it was actual surprise. He closed his mouth and leaned against the door frame, his gaze never leaving the three of them. They were sleeping, cuddled against Naruto's chest and he just rocked there, asleep himself. Or Sasuke thought he was asleep. There were no snores, he couldn't be sure. He walked in slowly, quietly and looked down at the girls. He reached for Hikime and Naruto's eyes opened to narrowed slits.

"Leave them. They will be fine teme." His voice was different, odd almost. Sasuke looked into his eyes and noticed they looked a little darker, not such a bright blue.

"I think they should go back to their cribs Naruto."

"If they go back they will wake up again within the hour. Leave them." He closed his eyes and started rocking again. Sasuke didn't know what to say, so he said nothing and just left the room. What the hell? He'd undergone a transformation...or something. Shaking his head to clear it, the Uchiha walked to his room and crawled under the covers. He'd have to gather intel on Naruto, find out what happened to him during the time he'd been gone. This...was just too strange.

The girls were the first ones awake, squirming around in Naruto's arms. He growled and opened and eye staring down at them. The other eye slowly joined and he frowned. "You couldn't give me another hour of sleep could you?" No, of course not! He sighed, sniffing the air and groaning. He'd have to do laundry sooner than he wanted. Standing, he set Aito in her crib, pulled off Hikime's cloths and stared at the offending diaper. "I really hate this job." No, he didn't but he did hate the smelly things he had to change. Sighing, his hands started a familiar pattern. He wiped her up set her aside and went for Aito. When they were both stripped, he took off his coat, which was now covered in baby pee, and headed for the bathroom. Setting the girls in a double baby bath he strapped them in and started the luke warm water. They giggled and started kicking. When they started rocking they squealed. He just smiled and when there was enough water in the tub, he picked up the baby bath and put them in the water. They shivered for a second but he ignored it and went straight to washing.

He was surprised that Sasuke wasn't awake yet and helping him. The thought was forgotten when he pulled the girls out, picked one up and dried her off. He picked up the other and did the same, then he was carrying them back into the nursery. Once they were dressed he looked around and grinned. Play pen. He set them in it and rushed off to the bathroom to wash himself up then grabbed a spare shirt from where he'd started keeping them and headed back to the nursery. He froze. Where were they? He looked around then went straight to the play pen. Nothing. The only thing that was there was a scroll. Naruto felt panic start rising from his feet. Picking up the scroll he opened it and read. Within seconds he was poofing into Tsunade's office his whole body shaking. The other shinobi in there looked at him and he stared straight at her, horror apparent in his eyes.

"Naruto?"

"They're gone." Tsunade looked at him, her jaw falling and dismissed the shinobi in her office.

'SHIZUNE!" The woman came running in out of breath.

"Hai Hokage-" she never got to finish.

"Get Sasuke in here now, I want every available shinobi even those on leave. I want them NOW!" Shizune rushed away and soon enough, people started appearing in front of her. Sasuke was the last to arrive. He didn't look happy.

"What?" Naruto turned to him and his face crumbled. he handed the scroll over. Sasuke's face visibly fell and the scroll fell from his hands. One of which, went to his stomach. Sakura was there in an instant keeping him from falling over. She looked to Naruto. He shook his head. Tsunade picked up the scroll and read aloud.

I said before you took my head you could not escape me Uchiha Sasuke. I trained you, I know you. You really thought you could kill me? You underestimated my power! Now, the price you pay is not with your body but with theirs. I wanted them and now I have them. If you want to see them again then come to the Village of Sound. We will discuss terms for their survival. Until them Sasuke-kun. A snake was the only thing adorning the scroll.

"What does that mean?" "Who was it signed by?" "Who is 'them'?"

"SHUT UP!" There were no more questions. Rubbing the bridge of her nose, Tsunade turned and stared at the shinobi over flowing in her office. "I'll keep this as simple as possible. Sasuke has kids. Two. Twins and girls. They have been kidnapped by Orochimaru or one of his henchmen." There were gasps and Naruto looked at them.

"Here's how this works-" he went into instant battle mode and started the war meeting. Sasuke was too out of it to listen to anything that was said. Sakura was checking his vitals. He was alive but he was so shocked he didn't know what to do. Missing? No, not missing, taken. He thought he's been fine there but obviously not. He finally came around and looked up. No one was there other than Kakashi, Sai, Sakura, Shizune, Tsunade and Naruto. Sasuke, in a spur of the moment thought, launched at Naruto and caught the blond around the scruff of the neck.

"HOW COULD YOU?!"

"I'm sorry Sasuke." His face deflated and he didn't stop the Uchiha from punching him. He went flying into the wall.

"Sorry isn't good enough Naruto! He has my babies!" Anger was seeping out of his pores. He went to move towards Naruto again and out of nowhere Sakura's fist found the side of his face. His body was caught by Kakashi. His former sensei wasn't letting go either. He was stuck between a rock and a very hard fist.

"Don't touch him again Sasuke." She turned to Naruto and bent to help him up. "It's not his fault. If you'd been paying attention he explained what happened." He sat Naruto in the closest chair and a green light emanated from her fingers. Naruto sighed. "He had just given them a bath and put them in the play pen. He went to get a clean shirt, wash himself up and when he returned they were gone, a scroll in their place." She nodded, apparently to herself and stood straight, crossing her arms over her chest and turning towards the irate Uchiha. "And for your information, the reason this room ins empty is because of Naruto. Even as I explain this to you, he has shinobi all over this village and then some canvasing for those babies. If anything, you owe him a thank you." She turned towards her sensei. "We're heading out. His last known location was just outside of Mist." Tsunade nodded.

Kakashi let him go and with a none-to gentle shove and moved passed him. Sai walked towards Sakura and Naruto stood. "Team Kakashi, move out," were the small words the blond uttered. Everyone just poffed out of th Hokage's office. Shizune cleared her throat and the door to the office opened. An unfamiliar face appeared...or actually, four of them. "Uchiha Sasuke, from now until this mission is over, this is your team." He looked at them. One was jounin or higher, he could feel it, the other three were just chounin.

"But Baa-sama!! You can't stick us with...him!"

"Konohamaru!" The one who spoke up just shuttered and turned towards Sasuke.

"Fine, if we have to be stuck with you then we have to be stuck with you but listen here you traitor, if you do one thing to hurt this team, you won't have to worry about Naruto-nii taking off your head." He just grinned. Sasuke was reminded utterly of Naruto. Oh why him?

Nothing. The place was still just as empty as the last time they'd come here. Only, the last time they'd come Naruto had almost died. With a sigh, Sakura rubbed her temples and looked around. Now they were standing in the space where they'd seen Sasuke so long ago. With a frown, she forced chakra behind her eyes and started scoping.

"Kakashi, do you see anything?"

"Negative. They cleared out of here when we found them the first time."

"Sai?"

"It seems there are no pathways they could have gotten through."

"Naruto?" When there was no answer, Sakura released the chakra behind her eyes and looked to him. He was just standing there, staring up at the ledge where they'd seen them. Sasuke and Orochimaru. His eyes were glazed over and he was lost in thought. She often found him like this but this was not the time. As she walked over, something stopped her. She frowned and tried to walk forward. She couldn't. "Naruto? Can you hear me?" Nothing. "Kakashi, what is this?" She traced her hand over whatever it was. It was invisible to her.

"A barrier by the looks of it." He walked over and touched it. He couldn't pass. Sai joined them and stared straight at Naruto. He sighed and pulled out a scroll. He quickly scribbled something on it and made a seal. Whatever it was released and soon enough, Kakashi and Sakura were watching as whatever he had drawn appeared in the barrier. When they looked at him his face was blank but he said,

"Nothing can stop ink. There is always a crevice it can seep into." The others said nothing but turned back to Naruto. The blond looked up and suddenly he shuttered and turned towards Sai. His eyes were dark blue. There was no emotion on his face. The barrier released and Sai stepped forward. Naruto came close to him and they just stood there for a moment. Again, Sai was the first to move and he wrapped his arms around Naruto's waist. Naruto's head collapsed on his shoulder, arms moving to wrap around Sai's shoulders. Sakura, to say the least, was staring wide eyed and with her jaw hanging to the ground. Kakashi was stammering something but in the end, they both just walked away. What on earth?

Naruto hadn't said a word since that day. They worked their way back to the village two days later, having gone thoroughly through the entire compound. When the arrived back to the village, the first person they went to see what the Hokage. The second was one perverted hermit. He still had no new information. When he was finally allowed to return to his bed, he didn't even bother going to the compound, he went straight back to his apartment. Nothing was there. It had been cleaned out. Tsunade said she wanted him committed to his mission. Well, he was committed, that was for sure...but taking all of his things? Well, the few he had left...he sighed and walked to what used to be his bedroom. He sat down in the spot where the futon used to sit and just looked around the room. They had really cleaned the place. He wondered if the people who'd been sent to remove his things knew it was his old apartment?

With a small sigh, the blond stood and headed to the door. It was a good thing he didn't need a key to get in. The idiots had left the door unlocked. The rooftops welcomed him and he just walked amongst them, away from prying eyes and watched as the sky turned black. It was a starless night. He was kind of glad for that. It reflected his mood. When he felt a presence off to his right, he looked. It was a good thing everyone knew not to touch him when he wasn't paying attention. The last time someone had done that, the person had ended up in the hospital for a week.

"Why so down Naruto?" He just shrugged and looked away from the all to familiar face. A hand on his shoulder stopped his forward progress and before he knew what happened, he was poofed inside of a bedroom. He looked around. It wasn't very well decorated and in fact, there wasn't much in there bu it was littered with supplies. "Sit." He was pushed to the futon in the corner and he sat. His blue eyes watched as his teammate pulled off his sandals and tossed them aside. "I'll be right back." The blond just nodded and watched Sai leave the room.

He wondered why he was here, why he let Sai bring him here, to his apartment, but he wasn't going to ask. Actually, something caught his attention. He stood and walked over to the far wall, the one located by the bathroom and started looking through some canvases. His attention just wouldn't go anywhere but the canvases. When he got to the last one, he actually pulled it out and stared at it. When had Sai done these?

"Ahh. I see you found my secret stash." Naruto set the canvas aside, face the room and turned to look at his teammate.

"When did you do these? How?" Sai just shrugged and walked over, handing Naruto a cup. it was full of steaming tea. Naruto sipped it and groaned. Neji once said Sai's tea was something one could get addicted too.

"I got bored and you both happened to be an interesting subject."

"So you spied on us?"

"It's what I do Naruto."

"Oh, I forgot." he chuckled a little, his mood cracking as he walked to the bed and sat down.

"Wish to talk?" Now, everyone knew that Sai had no emotions but over the few years he'd been in the team, everyone had been working with him and he'd been making slow but remarkable progress. One of the benefits was that he and Naruto became closer. That mean Sai knew more about him than anyone, well, except maybe Kakashi, Iruka and Tsunade.

"What is there to talk about ne?" He set his now empty cup aside and laid back on the bed, arm moving to cover his eyes.

"Why you are so down?"

"I'm down because for once after Him, I got close to someone, two someones and look what happens? I go to get a new shirt, clean myself up and they are baby napped right out from under my nose. I didn't feel anyone or sense any chakra. How is that possible? I have the best nose among anyone in Konoha."

"Kiba wouldn't agree."

"Of course he wouldn't, but he doesn't have a fox living inside of him does he?"

"No, more of a wolf."

"I don't want to argue." Sai just nodded and moved to sit next to his team mate. "I just...don't know." Not saying a word, Sai moved Naruto's arm and rolled the blond to his side. Sai moved and spooned against Nartuo's back, one hand coming up to run through blond curls. "Sometimes I wonder why I let you do this to me Sai."

"You know why you let me Naru-chan. Go to sleep." Naruto sighed and felt his eyes closing. When he drifted off, Sai placed a small kiss on golden locks and stood. He moved and shut off the light he turned on when he walked out to make tea. Speaking of tea, he moved and picked up the cups, put them in the sink and walked back to tuck Naruto in. That meant removing pants and jacket so he was in nothing but boxers and a tee-shirt. Once Naruto was safely tucked under the covers, Sai moved out to the living room and sat down on his small chair.

"How long have you two been together?" Sai just let a fake smile pass over his lips.

"Since I joined his team."

"Hn."

"What's the matter Uchiha-kun, do you have a problem?"

"Not with a look alike." he turned to head for the door. "You will never be me Sai so stop acting."

"I don't have to be you Sasuke. He and I get along just fine and he knows my name."

"But does he know of your betrayal?" With that, Sasuke left the apartment and headed back to the compound.

"More than you could ever imagine Sasuke."
