Chapter 8, Reluctance
The sound of rain hitting a tin roof was all that Naruto
heard. He smelt burnt flesh all around him, and tried to open his eyes. The
soreness he was feeling was enough to make him groan softly in pain as he sat
up pitifully on the table he was placed on.
As Naruto’s vision slowly returned to him, he noted that he
was in some sort of building. Recalling that he had escaped from the Akatsuki’s
lair, this place could not be too much harder to escape from right.
Naruto turned to his side, placing his feet on the ground.
He shivered as his bare flesh touched the hardwood floor but pressed off of the
table and stood up. He wobbled on his two feet, almost falling over but bracing
himself with his right arm. He gagged harshly and held his free hand to his
mouth, hoping that he didn’t spew all over the floor.
Falling downward, Naruto fell to his knees and panted
heavily. His body was on fire, burning is organs in liquid nitrogen. He coughed
in a hacking manner and coughed up a few drops of blood as he closed his eyes
and tried to level himself out.
“It … hurts.” Naruto dropped his forehead to the ground
clenching his stomach in pain as he started to sweat. His wounds from before
began to bleed, spilling crimson liquid out of the boils and down both of his
arms. “W-What the fuck is going on with me?” He questioned if it was even real.
In his eyes, he was in hell.
“Idiot,” the Kyuubi barked, “you are not in hell.”
Naruto growled at the fox inside of him, who was probably laughing at Naruto’s
pain. “That person gave you something really painful, but it will
eventually make you normal again.”
Naruto put his right knee in front of his face, holding the
side of the table with his right hand. He slowly began to pull himself up to
his feet, grumbling as pain shot through every single muscle in his body. “I’m
going to get the bastard that did this.” Naruto panted as he walked, each time
flinching from the intense pain that consumed his every tendon and bone.
He collapsed over the rail of the window. Looking out he saw
a city full of large buildings and smoke stakes. It looked so much different
than the memories he had of Konoha, and he wondered what the old place looked
like. “I would like to know what’s changed before I destroy it…”
It was dark outside, some time around midnight. The moon
shined down dimly, partially hidden by dark gray clouds. Naruto coughed again
as he looked up at the night sky through the dirty windowsill. “I wonder where
I am.”
“You are in the hidden village of Cloud.” Naruto’s eyes
widened as he turned his head around sharply. Shoukri was standing in the
doorway, closing the door behind him slowly. “I see you woke up, the name’s
Ichigaki Shoukri.” Naruto kept his eyes narrow and didn’t respond, preferring
to keep his distance from the new arrival. “Anko-san said your name was Naruto
right?”
“Where is the woman?” He looked around the room, completely
ignoring Shoukri and sat down on the windowsill. “What do you want?”
“I saved your life,” he said with a raised eyebrow, “are you
even going to thank me?” It was an honest question, and Naruto looked back at
the man. “Yep, I saved your life back there in the jungle.
“I guess you want a medal?”
Shoukri growled in anger and responded, “What the hell is
your problem?” When Naruto looked away he started to get a little bit about
what was going on and sighed. “Listen, I guess I don’t really know your
situation, but whatever.” He smirked and held out a silver vial, which made
Naruto even more confused. “I’ll tell you what, I’ll explain what I did to you,
and you’ll listen.”
“Do it quick,” Naruto demanded.
“Well, as I already explained to Anko-san, I gave you a dose
of nanomachines.” Naruto’s eyes widened, but he didn’t even understand what
Shoukri was trying to say. “I’m getting to that…” Shoukri said in a sigh. “The
Nanomachines are little tiny machines that draw power from your chakra
reserves. For instance, since you have a large chakra reserve, the nanomachines
are drawing on it to rebuild your muscles and organs.”
“So, you mean you’re rebuilding me?” Naruto got the most of
it. However it still seemed strange that such things existed and actually
worked. After seeing Shoukri’s nod Naruto added, “Well, it may be good for me,
but why the fuck does it hurt so damn much?”
“That is because of their nature.” Shoukri sat on the table
and turned his eyes towards the door before continuing. “Don’t you know that
when something hurts, it is normally working? When you get cut, and put on some
peroxide, it stings does it not?” Naruto nodded since it made perfect sense,
and clenched his hand, feeling the pain flowing through his nerves.
“How long will I be hurting like this?”
Shoukri turned his eyes back towards Naruto with a serious
face; “I would put money on it lasting at least a week.” Naruto looked
disappointed and rather afraid after that. The Nanomachines were making him
weaker but making him stronger at the same time. However that would still mean
that for the next week or even longer he would be weakened and easy to pick
off.
“By the way,” Shoukri said out of the blue, “because we put
those nanomachines into you, I’m afraid I cannot let you go.” Naruto thought
about it for a moment. He did not like being held prisoner, and a ghostly smile
came to his face.
“I’m sorry to hear that.” A loud clanging erupted into the
room as Shoukri was pinned against the wall with five hands of red chakra. Four
were holding his arms and legs while the fifth had his neck in a chock hold. “I
guess I’ll just have to kill you and leave then.”
“I knew you were tortured… but that’s no… reason to act like
a monster.” As he said the line the hand around his neck tightened. Shoukri
closed his eyes and felt the pressure increase, and everything slowed down.
“I’m afraid that this is how it has to be then.”
A wind started inside the room, blowing around in a circular
motion. Naruto’s eyes widened as blue energy shot through each of his hands,
dissipating them as they were weakened. Naruto grasped his head and looked over
towards Shoukri who had a soft teal glow around him. “What the hell?”
“You didn’t really think you are the only one with a demon
sealed inside of him did you?” Shoukri’s eyes began to glow with the teal glow,
reflecting the world around him as his pupils began to grow sharper and
sharper, ending with black lines even steeper than a cat’s pupil. Naruto became
surrounded with a slight red glow, having his eyes turned red and his pupils
become slitted like a cat’s. (Don’t you all find it odd that the Kyuubi’s eyes
aren’t nearly as slitted as berserk Naruto’s eyes?) ‘Lightning element, rain
of arrows.’ Shoukri closed his eyes and a thousand small blue arrows
launched themselves from his aura, going towards Naruto.
Naruto narrowed his eyes and extended his psychic barrier,
making the arrows bounce off and scatter. “Weak,” Naruto taunted, boasting as a
hand of chakra went towards Shoukri.
Shoukri saw it coming and bounced from the wall, letting the
hand hit it and press through. Debris scattered from the impact, stirring up
dirt and having the remnants of the wall fall to the floor plus on Naruto and
Shoukri. “Damn, those things still are strong.” Naruto could tell that Shoukri
had underestimated him and he smirked as he walked forward, towards him. “It’s
not over yet.”
Naruto smirked as Shoukri launched himself towards him,
coming towards his face. He balled his hand into a fist and went faster, going
for a straight thrust to Naruto’s face. “Idiot,” Naruto said as he prepared to
dodge and kick him straight in the stomach, that’s when it happened.”
‘Lightning element, rolling thunder.’ His hands began
to glow with lightning and Naruto noticed that Shoukri had gotten behind him to
late. Shoukri launched the attack at him, surrounding Naruto with lightning and
preventing his escape. “Now, lets see you stop this attack!”

Anko woke up in a rush. She had heard a large bang somewhere
downstairs and it had worried her. She was sitting in a rather large queen size
bed covered with silk purple sheets. She had a long sleeve button up lavender
shirt on, and nothing else except panties. Throwing the covers off of herself
she went over to the dresser beside the closet and pulled out a pair of short
silk shorts colored light blue. Putting them on she didn’t even put her hair
back up as she walked to the door and let herself out.
It was sometime during the night, she knew that much. In her
worried state she didn’t even check the clock. She walked down the hallway, and
heard much more pounding sounds combined with some screaming and a
lightning-like sound. It sounded like a fight, but it was coming from
downstairs… where Naruto was. “Naruto-kun!” She picked up her pace and turned
down the stairs, rushing downward to the main hall.
The bottom floor was even darker. The emergency lights had
been deactivated by something electrical, probably the lightning sound she
heard before. Walking towards where Shoukri let Naruto sleep, the sounds
started to die down. She didn’t know if it was a good sign or a bad sign, all
she knew was that she was getting closer to possible danger. “If Naruto was in
the middle of it, I’m sure he would be ok…”
It didn’t take much to figure that one out. Naruto was
strong, she even saw him. To escape from the Akatsuki was no easy task, so she
was sure he could handle it. She thought about Naruto for a bit and her mind
was filled about how he would look like once he regained his form back again.
She licked her lips as she felt her old personality finally coming back to her
as she thought about what she could do once he was back to normal. “That would
be good…”
She turned the corner and saw the mess. The room that Naruto
was in was trashed completely. The door was blown off, and it had multiple
dents in it, while the room itself was a mess. Nothing looked like it should
have. The table was cut in half by a sword, while the walls were collapsed and
there were numerous handprints obviously from Naruto’s unique powers. Naruto
himself was nowhere to be seen, and it seemed like he wasn’t in the room at
all.
“Naruto-kun?” Slowly walking into the room, Anko looked
around for Naruto. There was a hole about the size of a person on the far end
of it and she slowly walked towards it, not minding the stray glass that
threatened to cut her bare feet. “Please be ok,” Anko said softly. She didn’t
want to be alone in the hidden cloud village. It would make it difficult to survive
without him.
Anko walked out of the space in the wall and saw a field of
tall grass. Two forces of red and teal were clashing in the distance and Anko
only could assume that one of them was Naruto. She ran forward, hoping to reach
the two in time and stopped as she started to see what was actually fighting.
The red aura was a nine-tailed fox. Its body was doused in
fire, burning like a fire technique. Its nine tails swished behind it, stirring
up wind and blowing black smoke far into the atmosphere. The eyes were just
like Kyuubi’s, red, and evil. It leered at its opponent, not backing down. It
gave a large screech, almost loud enough to shatter glass by the mere vibration
of the beast’s voice. It leaned downward on its front two legs and was ready for
its next strike.
The blue aura was a drake. Its six wings were running along
its body and it looked like it was made of light blue fire. The wings flapped,
making enough wind to keep the firedrake aloft in the night sky. Its head was
narrow and long, and its eyes were sharp but held gentleness behind it. Its
long whip-like tail whirled around behind the drake, ready to strike out at the
fire fox should it attack. It narrowed its eyes as the fox leaned down and it
started to gain altitude.
“What is going on?”
Anko covered her eyes as the two creatures opened up their
mouths and shot energy beams towards each other. They hit with the force of a
meteor impact illuminating the air as a rocket explosion would. Anko was
getting pushed away by the force of the two attacks and it cleared the entire
area off grass.
When the explosion cleared, Anko saw that Naruto and Shoukri
standing in the middle of the clearing. They were both breathing heavily and
were still in their battle stances. Shoukri’s shirt was torn and his katana was
at the ready. Naruto had his psychic barrier up, and it was fluctuating from
the lack of power. “W-Wow…” Anko could hardly believe that they could cause
such a powerful attack, and it seemed like they could still go on.
Anko saw that Naruto had fallen down to his knees and
coughed up more blood. She rushed over to him and kept Shoukri from attacking
him while she flipped him over facing up. “Naruto-kun!” His eyes opened
slightly and he looked over towards Anko. He recognized who she was and looked
away. She didn’t know why he would look away from her like that. “Naruto-kun,
don’t worry about anything, you’ll be alright.”
“He attacked me first,” Shoukri explained. He quietly
sheathed his sword and looked back towards Anko who was still holding Naruto
protectively. “He didn’t really take it well when I said that he wouldn’t be
able to leave the city.”
Anko looked up to him with a sour look on her face as she
held Naruto closer. Shoukri sighed and turned around, taking a step, but before
he even took another a sharp pain went up his spine. ‘H-He caused this much
damage? The guy isn’t even at full power… what kind of monster is he?’
Looking back at Naruto, his eyes narrowed, as something was not quite right
with him. Something else was being overlooked.
