Chapter
Seventy-Two: Another encounter with the police
It
was late summer now and every weekend there was a festival in some
quarter of town. Some lasted only for a day, some for the whole
weekend, some even for a week or two. They were all the same: food
booths and stages with music, and sometimes a juggler or activities
for kids. The real purpose, however, was that you walked around, met
acquaintances and had a chat with them.
Naruto
did most of the chatting, but Sasuke enjoyed the festivals too. The
music still didn't mean anything to him, and neither did the foreign
food that seemed to consist only of fat and sugar, but he enjoyed
whatever extra activities there were, even if they were intended for
kids, as throwing balls or arrows at targets and annoying the owners
of the booth by engaging in stupid contests with Naruto and then both
of them winning all the prizes (which was the worst problem from the
owners' perspective).
He
also enjoyed watching the chess players: there was always a giant
chess board where the weakest players started playing in the
afternoon, soon joined by numerous onlookers who commented on the
match and gave advice. When the match had ended the person who had
given most of the advice challenged the victor, and a new match
began. Sasuke had learnt the rules of chess from Itachi just before
Itachi had joined ANBU, but he had no idea of strategy, so he did not
play, and he left when the really good players arrived, as he did not
understand their play.
What
Sasuke enjoyed most on these festivals, however, was the dancing: he
felt now sufficiently confident to dance with Naruto even when they
were the only same-sex couple.
On
one weekend it was their own part of town's turn to host such a
festival, and on this festival they came upon a new attraction: a
puppet theatre, which was curiously run by the police. Sasuke made
Naruto sit down at a table and watch and they stayed even when they
realized that the rest of the audience consisted of young children
and their parents: They had already been drawn into the play and
wanted to find out whether the young heroine would get back her doll
that had been abducted by some evil villain. Also, some of the
parents had already asked them to look after their kids while the
play lasted, so that they, the parents, could have a look at the
festival by themselves.
The
play ended well: After an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve the doll
by themselves the girl and her friends alerted the police who caught
the kidnapper and restored the doll to her mother (the girl). Yet
even though the story had been rather simple and obviously aimed at
children Naruto felt moved by the girl's grief for her child (the
doll) and leant against Sasuke, taking his hand, while Sasuke assumed
a dreamy expression, not able to turn his eyes from the action on the
stage, doing his best to subdue the emotions that had risen within
him.
When
the play ended the two puppeteers left their place behind the stage,
ready to answer the audience's questions. It were a man and a woman,
which made sense as high and low voices had been needed for the play,
and they were both in uniform. Sasuke had got his emotions under
control, faster than the kids who had suffered with the girl whose
doll had been lost, so he was the first to ask a question:
“So
does the police in Music Town occasionally hunt down criminals too?”
he asked.
“Of
course we do. What makes you think we don't?” the male officer
replied.
“I
thought you were busy searching for children who don't return home in
time, making a fuzz when people make music after ten, or organizing
football matches.”
“We
don't organize football matches”, the man said, sounding
irritated and annoyed. “We keep the fans from fighting. We
maintain the public order: that's our job. But we also hunt down
criminals.”
“Criminals
who steal dolls”, Sasuke said.
He
was provoking the policeman on purpose, Naruto thought. He must know
that this was a play for children and that people here don't confront
their children with something really horrible, something that
threatened the foundations of their existence. Though losing her
child (the doll) had been really horrible to the girl.
“Other
criminals too”, the policeman replied. “You're not from
here, are you`”
“No.”
“Where
are you from?”
“Konoha.”
“Well,
I guess that there the police's tasks are different”, the
policeman said.
Naruto
could feel Sasuke freeze.
“Like
spying on people, arresting them when they speak up against the
government, beating them into false confessions and into
submissions.”
“You're
mistaken”, Sasuke answered, and his voice had lost its
provoking tone and was all ice now. “You're not talking about
the police but about the secret service, also known as ANBU.”
“Well,
you're mistaken about the role of the police in Music Town”,
the policeman replied.
There
was a silence of a few seconds, then the female officer thought that
it was time to intervene.
“Look,
I think I know how you got the impression that we don't hunt down
criminals. It's something that happens rather behind the scene, and
if you aren't a criminal yourself, or have become victim of a crime,
you won't notice it, while you do notice if the police knocks at your
door because the neighbours have complained about the noise. Still
you can be assured that if you become victim of a crime we will do
everything to find the culprit.”
She
waited for a few seconds, and the hope that Sasuke would not answer
was written in her face. When the few seconds were over she turned to
the rest of the audience. “Is there anyone else who has a
question?”
It
took the children some time to overcome their feelings of
intimidation, and the policewoman had to encourage them, but then the
boldest raised their hands. Sasuke did not speak up again, much to
Naruto's relief. He had feared that Sasuke's questions would provoke
the police to ask for their documents, or even to arrest them for
being insolent, Instead when the children had finished asking
questions Sasuke went to the two people and apologized and then had a
look at their table with information leaflets.
Chance
had it that while the people from the police were putting down the
puppet stage the guy from Earth Country and his husband arrived, the
latter carrying his little nephew on his arms. When they saw Sasuke
and Naruto they sat down at their table, and the baby was placed on
his uncle's knees. Naruto feared they would tell them off for getting
so close to the police again, but they didn't. Maybe because they
were still in hearing range of the two officers, who were now sitting
behind their table and drinking coffee, but the two men did not urge
them to go elsewhere. Instead they bought some drinks and settled
down, too.
Sasuke
in the meantime was watching the baby. “He's really cute now”,
he said.
“You
think so?” the child's uncle replied, smiling proudly.
He
was definitely, Naruto decided: much cuter than on the photo that
showed him a few days after his birth. His face had rounded and was
not crumpled any more at all, there was a layer of very soft black
hair on his head, he looked very seriously at people, not trusting
them easily, but he smiled back when people smiled at him, like
Sasuke just at this moment.
“You
want to hold him for a while?” the uncle asked, handing the
child over to Sasuke.
Sasuke
still had difficulties laughing, but when he held the child and
placed him on his knee he smiled and beamed as Naruto had rarely seen
him. He caressed the boy's small round arms, their skin smoother than
any grown-up's, and played with his hair. The child's uncle warmed up
a jar of baby food for his nephew, and Sasuke was allowed to feed
him. He was told that he did very well, even though half of the food
did not enter the child's mouth but ended up on his napkin.
Naruto
felt jealous that it had been Sasuke, not him, who had been given the
child and who now had a chance to accumulate all this praise, and he
felt excluded, but he had no idae how to remedy the situation.
The
child's uncle saw Naruto's restlessness and passed him a cookie to
feed it to the child once he had finished eating the softer food.
Naruto smiled, even though he felt insecure – he always did
around small children, and this one was even smaller than Juugo's
youngest forsterbrother – he was determined to be connect with
him. He smiled at the child, said hello, waved at him until the child
smiled too, and then, instead of just putting the cookie into the
child's mouth he moved it in a spiral in front of his eyes, saying
“look, something comes flying!” and the child followed
the movement of the cookie with his eyes until the cookie ended in
his hand and then its mouth. The child nibbled a tiny bit off the
cookie (no wonder, as he had only one tooth) and then gave it back to
Naruto. It felt wet at the corner where the child had taken a bit.
Naruto felt confused, but the child's uncle gave him a hint: “He
wants you to do it again.”
This
time Naruto felt more confident.
“Look
what comes flying”, he said. “oooeee oooeee oooeee.”
The
child laughed, and Naruto laughed too. They played the game a few
more times until the cookie had, well, not actually been eaten but
rather decomposed.
“It's
over!” Naruto said in mock hopelessness, and the child looked
at him wide-eyed and shocked.
“Look,
here's something else”, Naruto continued, taking a tea spoon.
“It can fly too!”
The
child took the spoon, then he dropped it. Naruto picked it up. “Here,
it's flying again”, he said. The child squeed with joy and
Naruto laughed too. Babies were not that difficult, it seemed. It was
only tiring that the child kept dropping the tea spoon so that Naruto
had to pick it up again and again. He felt that he was making a fool
of himself, but when he looked at Sasuke he was smiling widely, not
in mockery but in bliss, and then he drew him into a kiss. Naruto
blushed and felt a bit embarrassed – normally it was Sasuke who
was more reserved about kissing when others were watching. The baby
looked up at them, wondering what they were doing.
