It was a while before Sasuke could fall asleep again, which wasn't until late in the night, when his exhaustion and frustration outweighed his discomfort. His pain conjuring nightmarish hallucinations as he slept, like what would occur during a fever dream.
Sasuke stood in what appeared to be a black void. Nothing could be seen except for a thick mist. Confused as to where he was and how he got there. He looked down at his body. There wasn’t a scratch on him. The wounds he remembered were gone. The teen could move freely as if he were never injured.
Voices echoed from off in the distance. “Sasukeeeeeee!!” recognizing one as Naruto’s.
"Loser," another voice whispered. Somewhat similar to his, but his own lips hadn’t moved. Turning this way and that, trying to pinpoint where the noises were coming from. It sounded as though they were all around him.
The next thing he heard sounded like Sakura crying, "Don't do it".
"You're annoying," the same voice from before whispered. Followed by Kakashi’s voice.
"Those who follow the path of revenge... it never ends well." Then it went silent.
The words Sasuke had stated several times in the past rang out through his mind. "I'm an avenger!"
"What the hell is going on?" he muttered, eyes darting around. Wondering if this could have been a genjutsu, he tried to activate his sharingan in an attempt to break it but nothing happened.
Shortly after, an image of Orochimaru appeared from out of nowhere. Sasuke couldn’t help it as a trickle of fear was felt at the sight of him. Seeing the same enraged look on his face as the day the Sannin attacked him. “You made your last mistake boy!!” lunging at him. Sasuke reached for his sword, but found it wasn’t on him. Taking several steps back before the vision vanished right before his eyes, as if it dissolved into the mist.
"You don't belong here." Remembering his words to Sarah. It was then Sasuke realized that the voices he had been hearing in response to the others was his own. The disembodied voices sounded distorted, almost like a memory.
Then came another voice, belonging to his brother Itachi. “Foolish little brother…” Sasuke gritted his teeth, running in that direction.
That was his only purpose, to confront his brother and make him pay for slaughtering their clan. Sasuke had given up everything for this, leaving his home and siding with Orochimaru, for one thing… to gain more power.
Not getting far before what felt like a snake bit his ankle, causing him to trip. The floor gave way and he fell through. Free falling until he landed in a deep body of water. Once his momentum had stopped, he continued to sink slowly. The water getting more dense the further down he went. Running out of air, a suffocating feeling began to set in. All the while Sasuke couldn’t muster the strength to swim. He had to fight this! But why did he almost want to give in?
Watching the bubbles escape his mouth one by one when an image of a girl reflected on the surface above him. He had never seen her before. A hand reached out to him. Looking at it before he took it.
Suddenly, he found himself laying in a grass clearing. He sat up fast to see a forest all around him. In a nearby tree sat a redhead girl on one of its branches, her back to him, gazing up at the moon. Her long hair blowing gently in the breeze. Appearing to be around his age, she was unlike any of the girls from his village.
Getting up onto his feet. Looking up, he observed her. “Who are you?” Sasuke asked aloud. His tone not harsh or raised, but pleasant compared to how he usually spoke.
The girl turned her head in his direction. The blue of her eyes shown in the moonlight. She wore a headband loosely around her neck, but the symbol branded on it was blurred. Unable to make out which village she was from.
Before he could even get close to her, the dream began to fade. “Wait!” he called out.
Sasuke awoke with a start. Forgetting the state he was in, jerking his body off the bed into a sitting position. From the adrenaline rush, he was able to ignore the pain for the time being. What sort of dream was that?
The pain was quick to greet him once he was fully awake, causing him to collapse back onto the bed. From the jarring movement and the shock of landing, even on a soft surface, aggravated his wounds, causing his pain level to increase.
"Fuck!" Sasuke hissed. He couldn't believe he’d forgotten. "Damn him!" He could barely take a deep breath. A surge of pain radiated from his torso. The heart monitor went off, beeping at a fast pace. Kabuto didn’t respond to it, as expected, leaving the teen to endure it. The more he tried to relax, the more his body tensed. It was almost unbearable, until thoughts of the redheaded girl resurfaced. He let out a rough gasp when he felt the pain ease off a bit. What was going on?!
Continuing to think of the girl in his dream. It distracted him from the pain until it became tolerable again, and eventually lulled him back into a peaceful slumber. For once Sasuke's mind wasn't troubled. Unconcerned about Orochimaru or his new play thing. For now, he just pondered the meaning of the dream.
-
As the sun rose over the land of Rice Patties, down in the depths of one of Orochimaru's many hidden compounds, Kabuto woke. Getting up, it was time to start the day. Naturally he had his own daily routine, taking care of his needs first. Afterwards he would, of course, check in on Sarah before seeing to Sasuke. He did hear at some point during the night that Sasuke's heart monitor went unrhythmical, indicating the teen's heart rate sped up. Listening for several minutes, he deemed the teen wasn't in any immediate danger, so he ignored it and went back to sleep.
Once dressed, he went to the kitchen to make breakfast. It was best to get his meal out of the way. He had a tendency to go countless hours without stopping, busy with one thing or another. However, this time was different. Too preoccupied due to his concern for his friend and his Lord to think about himself, he nearly forgot to eat for the past few days. Shaking his thoughts, knowing that wasn’t going to help, Kabuto continued what he was doing. It had crossed is mind to make something for Sarah as well, but he held off for now, not knowing what his Lord had in mind. Orochimaru would no doubt oversee her care. He knew full well that Sarah would constantly voice her opinion on the matter in a not so quiet way.
Not wanting to think about the more personal details of their relationship, which was none of his business anyway. Kabuto noticed a change in his Lord that wasn’t there before, and Sarah was likely the cause. He had never known the Sannin to be anything but a cold blooded killer, whose only concern was his own ambitions. He and Kabuto did not always see eye to eye, but Kabuto wouldn’t think to go against him. Some part of him even feared Orochimaru.
"If anyone can change him for the better, it'd be Sarah," he mused to himself.
Finishing up there, he then started to head towards Sarah’s room to check in with her and be sure her injuries were healing well. Her chest would still be tender for a while longer since he didn’t have full access to that area. He monitored the wounds as well as could be expected without a direct line of sight.
Half way to the woman’s room, a scream echoed through the halls. Kabuto’s eyes widened on alert, fearing the worst. “Sarah!”
-
With a hazy filter around her vision, Sarah could see she was in a hallway, though it wasn't as dark. She could vaguely see a stone floor with no distinct pattern leading up to walls of wooden panels. Her attention was drawn to the sound of coughing. Looking to where it came from, she recognized the bedroom she had stumbled upon while touring the underground lair. The door was open, showing who was inside. The snake nin was propped up against a large pillow on his bed, wearing a more casual looking red shirt. It was easy to see, even with his pale skin, that he was sweating. He looked as though he was sick. He didn't seem to notice her as she entered.
He coughed again, this time harder. Taking his hand away, it was covered in blood that came from his mouth. It looked like he was struggling to breathe.
"Wh--what's going on?" Sarah asked, approaching the bed. She had no idea how she got there but her attention was on the man, seeing the blood worried her.
Not looking up, as though he couldn't hear her, or even see her for that matter, his breathing was laboured much like the night they met. Coughing again, vomiting up more blood. It dripped off his chin and puddled in his hand.
"Orochimaru!?" Sarah called, as she got closer. She reached over to grab his arm. "Orochimaru! What do you need?! Let me help you!" Her hand went right through him. Sarah jumped when her hand passed through him, almost like a ghost
Finally he looked up, but not at her. However, just as he lifted his head, his hands were instantly pierced by a long sword made of chakra, pinning him to the wall. Standing in the doorway, at the other end of the blade, was Sasuke.
Sarah spun around fast to see the attacker. "SASUKE! NO!" She backed away, absolutely terrified of the Uchiha.
The scene faded to black. All she could see next was a splatter of blood.
Sarah screamed again, petrified of what was going on around her. Wanting to get out of there and run, but she couldn't move. She was frozen in place.
The scene faded in again, but only for a second. The teen was gone and there was blood everywhere. The snake nin now laid there dead in his bed, eyes glazed over. His expression was that of death.
-
Sarah sat up screaming, tears streaming down her cheeks. With laboured breathing, her body gave off compulsive shivers as if she was cold. Her heart beating like it was about to explode. The snake on her headboard was brought out of her slumber. Its eyes shifted toward Sarah’s shaking form.
The door suddenly burst open, revealing it was Kabuto. "Sarah, are you alright?" He was still haunted by how he found her the last time she screamed. He’d seen many horrid things in his service to Orochimaru, but nothing that effected him like that.
Sarah didn't hear Kabuto for the moment. It took time for her to register where she actually was. The horrifying nightmare, remained strong in her mind, with an ominous feeling the dream had left her. Realizing now that she was sitting in bed. The sudden jolt caused her immense pain. She clutched her shirt over her chest tightly with her good hand, hyperventilating. She knew it was a dream, but it felt as though she was really there.
"Calm down. You're safe," he assured her, wrapping his arms around her loosely in a comforting embrace. "Just breathe."
The second she felt someone touch her, she feared it was Sasuke. She looked up to see it was her friend. "Kabuto!!" Sarah gasped, hugging him back. Heeding his instructions to help get her breathing under control.
“It’s alright.” He soothed, holding her until she calmed down.
Once her body stopped convulsing, he carefully laid her back onto the bed. She reluctantly pulled her arms away from his neck when she felt the pillow behind her head. Activating his healing jutsu, his hands hovered over her chest wound.
Taking several quivering breaths, she stared at him. "It was... it was so real..." she stuttered as he healed her.
"It was just a dream," he reassured her, quick to deduce it was a nightmare that startled her.
"Sasuke... he...he..." she tried to say. "..He killed Orochimaru."
This caught the medic off guard. "What?"
Fear was evident on Sarah’s face. "My dream… He killed Orochimaru in my dream. He stabbed him with a chakra enhanced sword."
The young male was quiet for a moment, not sure what to make of her dream.
"Kabuto, is everything alright?" Came the snake nin's voice from the hallway, knowing Kabuto would have gotten there before him.
"Orochimaru!" the woman gasped, trying to sit up again, but the pain in her chest and Kabuto prevented her from doing so. She was relieved to hear his voice outside her room.
Hearing her call out his name, Orochimaru entered the room. He looked perfectly healthy like he did the night before. Not a single scratch on his, she hated to admit, handsome features.
She took several deep breaths. "Orochimaru! You're alive. Thank god!" With worry etched on her face, she was too consumed with relief to remember being angry with him.
He looked at her curiously, a brow raised. "What on earth are you talking about?" he asked, approaching the bed.
She was still quite shaken. Every time she closed her eyes, she could still see Sasuke impaling the man.
"Sasuke..." she took a few more deep breaths, realizing the man didn’t understand what she meant. "I dreamt Sasuke killed you... and you were coughing... like you did that night when we met... before he did it."
A bit surprised at her, his expression then eased into a smirk. Kabuto stepped back, giving his Lord the chance to sit down on the bed beside her, his hand to her cheek. "It's alright, my dear."
She didn’t notice the smirk as she tried to calm her nerves. Kabuto meanwhile, went to the other side of the bed to continue his work. He was surprised the jolt didn’t tear the healed flesh or reopen the wounds from her ordeal with Sasuke.
"I was so scared. Scared he would come after me after what happened," she continued. "I tried to ask you if you needed help but my hand went through you. Then before I was able to do anything, Sasuke stabbed you."
Gently pulling her into an embrace to console her, careful not to get in the way of the medic. "Hush now. Everything will be alright.”
Sarah gripped his sleeves as she hugged him back. And knowing Kabuto was there too, gave her a sense of security. Those two were the only ones she could trust. Kabuto was her friend and though she didn’t really like being there, she knew that Orochimaru wouldn’t harm her.
"I don't know if I'll be able to sleep anymore."
Finishing healing her as best as he could, Kabuto took his hands away. "You don’t have to worry about sleeping. Are you hungry? I could make you something," Kabuto asked, adjusting his glasses.
Sarah’s head leaning against Orochimaru's, she looked over to Kabuto. "I suppose."
He nodded. "I'll be right back." With that he left, leaving her alone with the Sannin.
Sarah nodded, staying in that position for a while. "I've never had such a traumatic dream before."
He continued to soothe her, running his fingers through her hair gently. "It's natural. You had quite a scare a few days ago. Your mind may have manifested it into a dream."
Sarah snapped up. "Sasuke attacking me has nothing to do with my dream though! I was standing in your bedroom."
Quirking a brow again. "And how would you know what my bedroom looks like?" he asked, slightly intrigued.
Her face turned a shade of pink. She had just put her foot in her mouth by accidentally revealing she had been in his bedroom before. Letting it go, he didn’t require an answer.
For several minutes they remained in each other’s arms, allowing the silence to permeate the room. Feeling his arms around her, he was able to ease her fears. His hair was silky against her cheek as her head rested on his shoulder.
In time, Kabuto came back with her meal. Seeing the plate of food, Orochimaru slowly backed away, releasing her to give her room to eat. "Be careful not to move too much," Kabuto warned.
"Can one of you help me to sit up?" she asked as she tried to situate herself better.
The snake nin reached over to assist, careful not to disturb her wounds. Adjusting the pillows behind her, he leaned her back against them. Once he finished, Kabuto handed her the plate.
"Thank you," she replied as she then began to eat. While she ate the woman started to wonder, perhaps Orochimaru was right and her dream was induced by her fear of Sasuke since he tried to kill her, and if he knew about Orochimaru's plans for him he likely wouldn’t go along with it.
"I'm told..." she began, breaking the silence, "You take possession of human bodies so you can live longer. May I ask who your next host is?" She knew the answer, but didn't want Orochimaru to think Kabuto was to blame for that knowledge.
Surprising the snake nin, his eyes widened a bit. He glanced over at Kabuto from the corner of his eye then back at her. "Who told you this?"
Sarah frowned, realizing Kabuto could get into trouble. "I'm a spy, remember? I hear things." taking another bite of food. "And for your information, that day I met you I was on my way to the Leaf Village and learned you killed the Hokage. I took what I learned back home."
The snake nin chuckled at her boldness. "It seems my old village is still afraid of me." He relished the thought.
Sarah snorted. "Yeah, well that's bound to happen when you nearly destroy a village, kill their Kage and the people in it," she retorted. Her tone wasn't harsh or anything. She was just grateful he was there.
"What's going to stop Sasuke from trying to kill me in my sleep?" she suddenly asked.
"He won't get that chance," the older man replied confidently.
"He will still be bed ridden for a week at least," Kabuto added. "And you won't be left alone again."
"If and when you are, I will have a look out to tell me if you're in danger," The Sannin referring to the garter snake that now guarded her.
Sarah looked over to the snake. "Is that who alerted you guys or was it my scream?" She was glad to be able to breathe normally again.
"I was nearby so I heard you scream," Kabuto explained and then pointed to the snake. "She most likely told my lord."
Sarah nodded. Remembering she never got a straight answer on who his next vessel was. "I hate snakes, but I guess it's a good thing she's looking out for me then. Which brings me back to an earlier question. Who is your next vessel?"
The snake nin’s smirk remained. "Persistent as usual." With his next breath he finally answered her. "Sasuke."
The woman smiled. "You should know that about me by now." Getting her answer, she then thought for a moment. "Guess I won't have to deal with him too long."
Once she finished her food, Kabuto took the plate, leaving to put it away.
"Kabuto tells me you wanted to go outside," the snake nin brought up.
Sarah nodded, remembering she was looking forward to enjoying the fresh air before her attack. "Yes. He offered to take me but said I can't leave, which further proves my point that I am a prisoner. And after I took him up on the offer, I was returning back to my room to wait for him when Sasuke attacked me." She took her good arm, and rested it lightly on her bad one.
"I could take you. If you don't mind being carried." Entertained at the idea.
Sarah nearly choked on her own air at the suggestion. Couldn't she walk? She did have full ability in her legs. She only had to be careful with her back.
She lightly blushed. "Yes, I want to go out." She slightly turned her head, wondering what it would be like to be carried by him. "I could be heavy though." It was then she realized something. "But then again, you already carried me before."
Seeing her reaction only amused him further. "Hmhm," he hummed, remembering how he held a sense of pride when he took her from her village. "It's settled then."
A short time later, Kabuto returned in case the woman needed anything else. The Sannin turned to him. "I’ll take care of her for now. You may continue on with your work."
Not protesting, the medic bowed. "Yes my lord."
Sarah bit her lip. "Kabuto, can we talk later. You are my friend, aren't you?" She didn't want to stop seeing him because of his new order. Sarah actually was surprised by Orochimaru's words and didn't want Kabuto to keep his distance.
"Of course," the young male answered, giving her a smile. "I'll check in on you later." Taking his leave, he went back to the kitchen to make breakfast for his other patient.
The snake nin turned to her again. "Do you wish to change before we go?"
Her cheeks turning a shade of pink. She really didn't want him to change her again, but she couldn’t very well go outdoors in her pajamas and besides, from her dream, her clothes were sticking to her like glue.
"I...um..." she didn't know what to say. Turning her head, ashamed, she quietly answered. "Yes."
The snake nin subtly grinned. Standing, he lightly pecked her lips before going to the dresser. Getting a new change of clothes, before returning to the bed.
She sucked in a breath as he peeled away her damp, sweaty clothes. She hated it but at the same time welcomed it. With his hands on her, in a non sexual manner, allowed her muscles to relax further from the effects of the terrible dream. She closed her eyes, wondering what he'd put her in this time.
Slipping her into what felt like a dress. Sarah opened her eyes to discover it was the same dress she wore the day they had sex in her village. The man's face close to hers, his smirk was evident. "You look beautiful in this dress."
Her heart sped up, turning her head away abruptly. "If you're done leering at me in this dress you've so destroyed me in, can we go now?" She actually now hated the dress and wanted to get rid of it.
Concealing his amusement, he pulled away. Standing again, he gently lifted her into his arms.
Sarah held her breath as she was lifted off the bed. On reflex, her arms were quick to wrap around his neck as she leaned against his shoulder. It was a wonder her chest didn't ache. Then again, Kabuto was a highly skilled medic and Orochimaru was being careful with her.
Holding her close as he carried her out of her room and down the hall, going slow so the movement wouldn’t disturb her wounds.
"How do you not get lost," she muttered near his ear as she tried to look ahead of them. Sarah had no idea where they were. She couldn't wait until her room had more lighting. "Why can't this place have more light?"
"I have very keen senses and I memorized most of these tunnels by now," no stranger to boasting. "You know I have many enemies. If someone were to find us, it works to my advantage.”
That made sense. "My village is underground, but it’s very well lit up and many have a hard time finding it," she tried to reason.
With a sigh, she gave up trying to understand him. She rested her head back against his shoulder, trying not to think of what it would be like to have his hands all over her. The fact that came to mind had her blushing. Hoping he hadn’t sensed it.
Pretending not to notice, this time. He had a pretty good idea what made her do so. The idea of her thinking of him in that way gave him satisfaction. He soon would have her admitting to her true desires.
Soon they came to a set of stairs leading upward where sunlight shined through. Sarah lifted her head to look at the approaching light and smiled. She couldn’t wait to see the outdoors again. Continuing their climb up; they soon reached the exit to the lair, leading straight out into a grassy meadow surrounded by trees.
