Sakura worked late enough to miss supper. She had agreed to have tea with Gaara this evening, although at the moment she had chaotic mixed feelings about spending time with the kazekage. She found him attractive. But wasn’t she supposed to be saving herself for Sasuke? Sasuke, who’d left the village a month after the war ended to go do penance, or find himself, or whatever it was that he just had to do. Alone. She needed to face reality. Uchiha Sasuke had blown her off again. He hadn’t even written. Was she really going to continue to nurse a school girl’s crush? Or was she going to grow up and live in the real world. Gaara was here and interested enough to want to spend time getting to know her. And she found herself wanting to spend time with him too. Even though her feelings threatened to overwhelm her senses, objectively, Gaara was a good guy. He was strong, intelligent, powerful, and reasonably good looking. She’d be a fool not to see where this might go.
Sakura walked into the kitchen to see Jiro preparing the tea set. “Ah, Sakura, so good to see you.” The plump older man smiled generously. “The Kazekage did say he expected you for tea. I think he fancies you, you know.” He winked at the pink haired kunoichi.
Sakura couldn’t help but blush. “Oh, Jiro. Please don’t make such a fuss. It’s not that important.”
Jiro paused his cooking, wiped his hands on a towel, and turned, giving Sakura his full attention. “Please, Sakura, take a seat for a moment.” He motioned her to a kitchen stool by the counter. Sakura sat down and looked curiously at the now serious cook. He patted her hand lightly to reassure her as he spoke, “Sakura, I’ve known Gaara his entire life. I’ve served this family many years and I hope to serve many more. Gaara is… difficult to get to know. He’s a very, very private young man. You are the only kunoichi he has ever asked to tea. I humbly ask you to please be honest with him and kind. I’m sure a lovely young woman like you has many suitors, but please understand, Gaara does not like many people. You are not ‘just another girl’ to him.”
Sakura swallowed hard, processing the older man’s words thoroughly before she replied, “Thank you, Jiro. I will do my very best to be open and kind with the kazekage. I have no experience to speak of myself in these matters, so I do value your advice. And of course, your discretion. I just… I’m… well… I’m really nervous.” She admitted shyly.
Jiro smiled and patted her hand again, “There’s no need to be nervous, miss. Just have tea together and talk. Enjoy each other’s company and everything will be delightful. I promise.” Then he hopped back to his cooking, finished up the tray of tea and sandwiches, and handed it to Sakura.
Sakura took the tray with a sigh, “If you say so, Jiro. I will do my best.” And she smiled at the kind-hearted chef as she headed down the hall.
…
Gaara was pacing in his quarters. She’d missed supper. Was she avoiding him? Had she only said yes to his request for tea out of a sense of obligation? Or possibly guilt for having broken his ribs? Was this some sort of pity date? Was it even a date? He didn’t go to restaurants in town much since they had a staff to feed them, not to mention the political implications of favoring one business over another. He didn’t go to shows, he hated parties, and he avoided unnecessary social functions like the plague. And this was why. Nerves. It was so much easier to be alone. And Sakura… well he cared about her. He cared what she thought, and he wanted to be around her. Meals were better with her at the table. Her lovely face and her sharp wit made her so… so… irresistible. But what if his feelings were unrequited? What if she was already in love with someone else. Oh Kami, what if it was Naruto? He hadn’t heard anything from Temari, but what if it was a secret? Oh Kami, why was he such a ball of nervous energy!
A soft knock at the door broke his rambling thoughts. He took a deep breath. “Enter.” He spoke as cool and calm as ever. His heart rate climbed at the sight of the pinkette coming through the door with tea. His façade remained steadfast, “Good evening, Sakura. It’s good to see you.”
Sakura smiled brightly at the kazekage, “Hello Gaara. It’s good to see you too.” Her heart was positively a flutter as she handed him the tray and followed the tall young man onto the veranda. The cool evening breeze made them comfortable as they sat down at the small table. She poured the tea with steady hands despite her internal turmoil. “How was your day?”
The shinobi couple chatted at length over their sandwiches; their nerves slowly calmed as they settled into conversation; a light-hearted verbal dance between sips of their tea. As the cool of evening grew deeper, Sakura shivered in the now cold breeze.
“You are cold. Let’s bring the teapot indoors, shall we?” Gaara picked up the tea pot and his cup and Sakura followed his lead.
“That’s a good idea. The temperature can drop so quickly here.” She stood inside the large bedroom looking around carefully for the first time. She’d been here before, but this was the first time she’d allowed herself to relax enough to really take it in. The décor was simple, tasteful and functional. She noticed a small table and chairs on the other side of the bed wit ha shogi set. “Oh, do you play shogi, Gaara?”
“I do. Would you like to play?” He asked already moving the tea that way.
“Well, I guess we could play. It’s been a really long time since I’ve played though. Could you explain the rules for me?” Sakura asked sweetly.
Gaara cringed slightly. Sakura was bright and for a moment he’d hoped for a challenging shogi opponent. But he supposed he would content himself with teaching her the game. He only hoped her crushing defeat wouldn’t dissuade her from playing with him again. “Of course…” Gaara went on to explain the rules and the movements of the different pieces. Sakura nodded thoughtfully as he went through all the basics of shogi.
“Yes, ok… it’s coming back to me a bit now. I think I can play.” She smiled as she made her opening move.
Her play wasn’t too bad for a novice, Gaara mused as he prepared to destroy her quickly. No sense dragging it out. And then she left her bishop completely exposed. He took the powerful piece without comment. Two moves later he was stunned as Sakura said, “Check mate.” She smiled a broad Cheshire grin as he looked at the game board in utter shock.
Gaara looked across at Sakura, saw the look on her face, and spoke quickly, “Haruno Sakura, you are a con artist! I believed you were a novice. You even sacrificed your bishop! What a deceptive little kunoichi you are!” He was angry with himself that he’d been taken, a little bit angry with her for the deception, but also very impressed that she’d pulled it off.
Sakura shrugged, “I was afraid you’d notice the tactic since it’s one you use so well yourself.” She smiled at him coyly, referring to their early morning sparring match.
Gaara laughed heartily. He kept laughing too. In fact, he hadn’t laughed like this in years. Sakura laughed with him. She laughed so hard tears were running from her eyes. She noticed Gaara holding his side, but he was still laughing.
Sakura stood and went to his side, kneeling to check on his ribs. “Ahhhh, Sakura that was so funny. But laughing… Laughing is a bit painful, I’m afraid.” Her glowing hands were on his torso now, adding a bit of chakra to ease his discomfort.
Sakura looked in Gaara’s face, her concern for his pain evident in her expression, “How do you feel Gaara? Is that better?”
Gaara took a deep breath as turquoise eyes met deep green ones. Her beauty was so incredible that words failed him in that moment. His hand went to her face, gently wiping the tears of laughter away. Her eyes held his spellbound, so Gaara closed his eyes for the moment and leaning in, he kissed her softly on the lips.
The kiss was an awakening. Sakura felt a well of passion and desire rise from the depths of her being as Gaara’s soft, masculine lips met hers with all the electric energy of a lightning storm. She closed her eyes hoping to keep the moment indefinite and as his lips pulled back slightly, she whispered his name, “Gaara…”
Their foreheads touched as her hands were now on either side of his waist. His hands cupped her face as he replied softly, “Yes, Sakura?”
Her hands quivered and Sakura felt her control slipping away like the receding tide. “Gaara… will you hold me?” Her soft whisper was barely audible as the fear in her voice echoed in the young man’s heart.
Strong arms lifted the petite medic; she found herself almost instantly on Gaara’s bed wrapped in his arms and pulled up against his chest. He kissed the crown of her head softly as she sighed into him; her right hand caressing his shoulder as small tremors plagued her fingertips. His deep voice whispered gently, “Sakura, why are you afraid? I could never hurt you.”
Sakura smiled and breathed deeply, his masculine scent flooding her senses with the faint odor of musk mingled with the ocean’s spray. She did feel safe ensconced in Gaara’s arms. “I know… I fear myself. I’ve… I’ve never… I just… well, it’s just very new and strange… I don’t trust myself.”
Gaara did his best to process her words. Women were so incomprehensible. But here was Sakura; she had let him kiss her and now she was lying in his arms. Clearly, she felt something for him too. And he could certainly understand her trepidation; after all he’d been pacing himself – Gaara of the Sand and the Kazekage had been pacing nervously that very evening. “I’ve never had a girlfriend, Sakura. This is all new to me as well.” He kissed the top of her head again, the slightly fruity scent of her conditioner mixed with her natural scent to the joy of his hypothalamus.
Sakura’s fingers stopped shaking as his soothing voice and strong embrace calmed her nerves. Her right hand traced imaginary patterns on his chest and shoulder as she spoke softly, “So you are a virgin too then?” She tilted her head up just in time to see Gaara blush nearly the color of his hair.
“No.” He replied with a sigh. “My brother has a certain fondness for brothels and I’ve had the misfortune of being dragged along on a few occasions… But surely you know that sex and intimacy are not the same?” He asked hopefully.
Sakura smiled at the sight of the young stoic blushing as she edged herself up a bit. Gaara turned onto his right side, still holding her gently as the young couple now looked into each other’s eyes as they lay side by side. “Yes, I do understand the distinction… So then, am I your girlfriend, Gaara?” She asked plainly in all sincerity.
A small smile curved at the edge of the kazekage’s lips, “I certainly hope so.” He reached up and brushed a stray lock of pink hair from her face as he leaned in, kissing her softly on the lips, relishing the warm, soft flesh against his own, tasting the faint remnants of tea and cucumber on her breath. She delighted him.
As they broke the kiss, Sakura sighed, “well, my boyfriend, as incredible as I find your company, I’m going to fall asleep on my feet any moment now, so I should return to my own room…”
“Stay.” He interrupted her with his naturally authoritative voice. Then softened slightly, “Please stay, Sakura. I’m tired too, but… Just stay and lay next to me. I… I would like for you to stay.”
Sakura took in a deep breath; how could she say no? Surely her inability to say no to this man would be her downfall. “That’s an offer I cannot refuse.” She kissed his cheek lightly. They climbed under the covers and resumed a similar position entwined in each other’s arms.
Sleep found them quickly.
