Chapter 7. One boy, one girl
"Time to get up," Neji shook her awake.
Hikari groaned and turned over, "five more minutes," she whined. She did not want to get out of bed yet, she had a terrible sleep. Her back ached and her hips were sore as well, nights were spent tossing and turning, unable to find a comfortable position. She was just relieved that the morning sickness had finally subsided.
"If you don't get up now you won't have time to eat before we go see Tsunade." He knew that would get her out of bed, she had been looking forward to this appointment for weeks now, they both had.
Hikari shot up like a rocket, "okay okay I'm up, let's go," she said excitedly, how could she have forgotten, today was her first ultrasound.
Neji couldn't help but laugh at her sudden enthusiasm, "what do you want deep fried this morning?" After she had developed a weakness for all things deep fried, Neji had caved and bought one for the house. He had grown tired of late night runs trying to find somewhere that carried everything from deep fried pickles to deep fried peanut butter banana cheeseburgers.
"French fries?" she asked hopefully.
That was another thing, she seemed to now have a fondness for, foreign food, "french fries for breakfast?"
Hikari nodded, "but I need bacon, gravy, and cheese too."
Neji gave her an odd look, this was a new concoction. "Okay, how does this work?"
Hikari thought about it for a moment, trying to visualize the best way to prepare it, "well after the fries are done, you add the cheese then the gravy to melt the cheese and then top it off with crumbled bacon."
Neji just shook his head in amusement, "as you wish, I'll get it started while you get ready, and don't forget Tsunade said you have to drink thirty-two ounces of water half an hour before the appointment."
By the time they reached the hospital she really had to use the bathroom. They sat in the exam room waiting for Tsunade but she was running late, and the twins seemed to think her bladder made a perfect trampoline. Finally an hour after the appointed time Tsunade waltz into the room.
"It's about time," Hikari snapped, if she had known it was going to take so long she would have waited until she got there to drink the water.
Tsunade shot her a glare, "if you like we can always reschedule for another time and you can do this all over again," she threatened. She knew that would shut her up, for one she wouldn't want to go through this process all over again, even if she would have to anyway, secondly she knew they really wanted to see the babies today.
"I'm sorry Aunt Tsunade, I just really really have to pee," Hikari apologized.
"Alright get up on the table and we'll get started then." She began preparing the machine that would serve to show them inside the womb. When Hikari was settled she applied a generous amount of gel and began to move the sensor around to get a clear picture. She took several measurements to make sure they twins were developing properly while pointing out what she saw. "So these are their heads, we have their little arms and legs. All fingers and toes accounted for, you can see their little hearts beating strongly. Do you two want to know the genders?"
"As long as they're healthy it doesn't matter, right Hikari?"
"Yes, but I still want to know," she gave him a playful glare, "don't think for one second I haven't seen you sneaking peeks with your byakugan. Even if we didn't find out today, I have no doubt you'll know before they're born."
Tsunade laughed and went back to viewing the screen, "okay this little one here," she highlighted a section of the screen, "you have a little girl. Now the other one, let's see if we can get her to move over a little bit."
Tsunade prodded Hikari's belly gently, trying to get the twins to move, but it was useless. "Okay, go to the bathroom and empty half your bladder and we'll see if that makes it easier."
Hikari gave her an incredulous look, "you have got to be kidding me, do you have any idea how hard it is to stop mid-pee? And how the hell do I know when it's been half?"
"Just do your best, and hurry up I still have another job to do you know."
Hikari waddled into the bathroom mumbling about sadistic doctors enjoying making their patients uncomfortable. She returned a minute later and climbed back onto the table.
A little more manipulation on Tsunade's part and they had a clear view of the second child, "and we have a boy as well," she announced to them. "It looks as though he is a bit bigger than his sister but they are both within the normal range for twins. I think we can put your due date at about july twentieth. Though as I have said before they will probably come sooner than that. Just keep up what you have been doing and everything will be fine. I assume you will be ordering the expansion of the house to start soon." They nodded, "okay, Hikari no painting, the fumes aren't good for you or them, in fact you might want to get out of the house while it's being done."
"No worries there, I am leaving the painting if Kira's capable hands, I know she's dying to get started," Hikari explained.
"Good, now I will see you again next week, and I will schedule you for another ultrasound when you're thirty weeks, just to make sure everything is still going well."
~*~
"The word is he has returned to his home village."
"I have heard the same rumors, do you think she's still with him?"
"It seems likely, what are their defences like?"
"We would need the destructive power of a large scale attack to get them both. They won't go quietly."
"The two of us will go, but we need to take the time to plan this out carefully."

Neji was sitting at the desk in the study working on a lesson plan. Only a few weeks remained before he would take on his first team of Genin. Hikari sat in her favourite spot, a stack of graded papers on the floor next to her. An early spring storm raged outside, she was absorbed in the flashes of lightning that lit up the sky, her arms cradling the growing baby bump as she sang quietly.
He finally gave in to his friend's girlfriend
When she said, "there's someone you should meet"
At a crowded restaurant way cross town
He waited impatiently
When she walked in their eyes met
and they both stared
And right there and then everyone else disappeared but
One boy, one girl, two hearts beating wildly
To put it mildly it was love at first sight
He smiled, she smiled, and they knew right away
This was the day they'd waited for all their lives
And for a moment the whole world revolved
Around one boy and one girl
In no time at all they were standing there
In the front of a little church
In front of their friends and family
Repeating those sacred words
Preacher said, "son kiss your bride"
and he raised her veil
Like the night they met time just stood still
One boy, one girl, two hearts beating wildly
To put it mildly it was love at first sight
He smiled, she smiled, and they knew right away
This was the day they'd waited for all their lives
And for a moment the whole world revolved
Around one boy and one girl
He was holding her hand when the doctor looked up and grinned
"congratulations, twins"
One boy, one girl, two hearts beating wildly
To put it mildly it was love at first sight
He smiled, she smiled, and they knew right away
This was the day they'd waited for all their lives
And for a moment the whole world revolved
Around one boy and one girl
Neji pushed his papers off to the side and went to slide in behind her, she leaned into him and began to hum to herself, some unknown tune, as he caressed her belly.
"Neji, when did you first realize that you liked me?"
Neji thought for a moment before smirking slightly. "The day I took you to the market for the first time, we played that game of shogi, I realized you weren't like most of the girls around here, you had brains and actually used them. Also, you weren't intimidated by me in the slightest, first you told me I had a stick up my ass then you called me a pretentious bastard."
Hikari couldn't help the blush that covered her face when she thought about that day, "I'm sorry about that," she frowned.
"Don't be, you were honest, I was acting like an asshole that day."
"You were just guarded, I think we both were. Do you remember Choji's party?"
Neji nodded pensively, "you were pretty drunk that night."
"I still remember most of it though, I think that was when I first accepted that I liked you as more than a friend, when Ino got a little overzealous as we played spin the bottle."
Neji laughed at that, "I thought you were going to hit her."
"I almost did," Hikari giggled, "she's grown on me."
"She's very persistent."
"Not as persistent as Naruto, but pretty damn close."
"I came to the same conclusion that night, I just couldn't find the right words, after I heard you singing, you had me." Hikari reddened, clearly remembering that moment.
"I'm just glad you gave me a second chance," Hikari said softly, she had her eyes closed now, a small frown on her face as she thought back to the day she almost ruined everything.
Neji thought for a moment, trying to recall what she was referring to, as far as he could remember she hadn't done anything to push him away. There had been a few tense moments, like the day she had collapsed on him, or when they first discussed Orochimaru, but even then, she had been willing to talk and he had been willing to listen. "When was your first chance?" the confusion evident in his voice.
Hikari sighed, "the lake, you were so angry with me, I thought I had destroyed any chance I had at becoming your friend."
Neji held her a little tighter, "I wasn't angry, well I was, but I was more worried than anything else. You scared me, but pushing you away never crossed my mind."
"It was a stupid stunt," she muttered, "I wish I had never done it, there's a few things I wish I had never done in my life."
"Just as long as coming to Konoha isn't one of them."
"If anything I wish I had come here sooner," she said with a smirk, suddenly her eyes shot open in excitement, "did you feel that?" She had just felt a tiny little thump against her hand.
"What?" Hikari grabbed his hand and placed it where hers had just rested. It happened again, Neji looked down in awe, "is that?" Hikari nodded exuberantly, she was already on the verge of tears again. It wasn't long before they could feel the tiny little kicks on the opposite side, as the second twin joined the first. Neji felt as if he could stay here forever just feeling his future children, but they were soon interrupted by someone knocking on the front door. "I'll get it."
Neji came back moments later with a whole entourage consisting of; Ino, Shikamaru, Naruto, Sasuke, Kira, and Itachi.
"Okay spill," Ino demanded, "your ultrasound was days ago and you still haven't told us anything," she pouted.
Hikari couldn't help but laugh, "alright, let's go to the den at least, where everyone can sit comfortably." Hikari chose to sit in one of the arm chairs while Neji perched on the arm beside her. They all looked at the couple expectantly, well Naruto, Ino and Kira looked more interested than the others.
"Well?" Naruto pressed.
Hikari looked up at Neji, silently offering him the chance to share the news, "we're having a boy and a girl."
Ino squealed loudly, she knelt in front of Hikari and placed a hand on her belly, "I can't wait to meet you two, Aunty Ino is going to spoil you rotten," she spoke directly to the growing babies, her eyes filled with wonder when she felt a little kick. "They're kicking?"
Hikari nodded happily, "just started today, they already seem very active."
"Probably the girl kicking in response to Ino spoiling her," Neji added with a smirk.
Ino kept her hand on Hikari's stomach, hoping to feel a couple more kicks, "you will let them call me Aunty Ino right?"
"Of course Ino, I would be honored to consider you their Aunty."
"I guess that makes you Uncle Shikamaru," Sasuke said with a smirk."
"Troublesome." Ino slapped him upside the head for his comment.
"Can I feel the baby kick?" Naruto asked hopefully.
"Sure, come here," Hikari took his hand and placed it where most of the kicking seemed to be concentrated.
"Woah, that's so cool, say can I be Uncle Naruto? I understand if you don't want to," he added quickly.
"I consider you all my family, and I know these two will grow up knowing just how much you all mean to me."
"Don't get all emotional now," Sasuke cautioned her, "it doesn't suit you."
You could hear a pin drop, it was common knowledge that you never upset a pregnant woman, the group looked back and forth between Sasuke and Hikari waiting for the imminent explosion.
Hikari eyes filled with tears as she began to cry unabashedly, "are you calling me emotionally unstable?!" she screamed. "You probably think I'm fat and ugly too don't you. Well its not my fault!"
Sasuke looked like a deer in the headlights as she continued to rant and rave at him. He had only seen her this angry once before, and that time she had broken his nose. What was more he knew he couldn't lift a hand even to defend himself, if he did he would have Neji to deal with, including every other occupant of the room. "I-I I'm s-sorry Hikari, I didn't mean it, p-please don't cry."
Neji held her, gently stroking her back trying to calm her, while glaring at the younger Uchiha. Sasuke tried to make himself smaller under the scrutiny those around him.
"Perhaps, little brother, it's time you went home, come on," Itachi pulled him to his feet, and led him out before someone decided to attack him.
"Are they all that crazy when they're pregnant?" Sasuke asked once they were out of hearing range.
Itachi let out a low chuckle, "well I haven't been around many pregnant women, but one thing I have learned from the few I have seen, is that you should never ever draw attention to the way they act or how they look, unless it is to compliment them. And it had better be a sincere compliment too, they can just tell if it's not.
"I remember when mom was pregnant with you, father was never very tactful, he told her she needed new clothes because her usual ones were bursting at the seams."
"What did she do?" Sasuke asked curiously, they never spoke much about their parents, but when Itachi spoke of them Sasuke was more than willing to listen.
"She gave him a concussion, after hitting him in a head with a cast iron frying pan. So you should consider yourself lucky that all Hikari did was yell. In the future however just remember to always be nice when there is a pregnant women around, especially in this village where there are weapons always close at hand."

"It's okay Hikari, you know how Sasuke is, he's just an idiot," Naruto assured her, as she wiped away the last if her tears, "have you guys picked out names yet?"
"We've discussed a few, but haven't settled on any yet," Neji answered him.
"Well let's hear them, maybe we can help you decide," Ino suggested.
"Well we have decided on our boy's name, we're going to name him Hiroshi," Neji told them proudly.
"After my father," Hikari explained softly.
"Girls names have been a little more difficult, we seem to have narrowed it down to Megumi, Noriko, and Hitomi."
"Those are all beautiful names," Kira said with a bright smile.
"Which ones are your favourites?" Hikari asked eager to hear her friends ideas.
"I really like Hitomi," Kira offered.
"Hitomi is a beautiful name, but the name could be rather ironic depending on which parent she takes after," Shikamaru pointed out.
"Told you so," Neji told Hikari with a chuckle.
"And I told you I love your eyes, so it's not ironic to me at all."
"Megumi, is the best one in my opinion, after all she is a blessing, they both are," Ino beamed at them.
"When is the construction starting? And do you have anything in particular that you want me to paint for them?"
"We thought we would leave it all up to you, after the job you did on your own place I wouldn't want to squelch your creative genius. As for the construction they'll be starting on Monday, that way I won't have to listen to any of it, also Aunt Tsunade thinks it would be best if you did the painting while I'm not home, the fumes could be harmful."
"As much as I love all the baby talk, isn't there something else we could discuss?" Shikamaru asked.
"Sure, how is your and Ino's house coming along?" Hikari inquired, knowing that was the last topic he wanted to talk about, he had pushed all of the major decisions off on Ino, stating the whole thing was too troublesome.
Completely ignoring her question he turned to look at Kira. "How is your training coming with Naruto?"
"She's doing great. She'll be a top class kunoichi in no time."
Kira blushed brightly at the praise, just as Itachi came back in, "I'm not that good, you're much better than I am Naruto," she looked around at all of her friends, "you all have such unique talents, I could never stack up."
"Don't talk like that," Hikari assured her, "you just need to find your own way of doing things."
"She's right you know," Shikamaru informed her, "that's the reason Sasuke suggested you work with Naruto instead of someone more disciplined. You can't find someone with a more unique way of training and look how well he does."
"But you have all had formal training for far longer than I have, the only thing I have that I'm good at is my painting."
Itachi pulled her into his lap, "that's not true Kira," he paused to kiss her temple. "You're great and hunting and tracking, and don't think I've forgot about all you made for yourself in that cottage."
Hikari had her face scrunched up in thought, "has no one formally introduced you to Sai yet?"
"Shit why didn't I think of that, he would be perfect to tutor you now that you've learned proper chakra control."
"Which one is Sai again?" Itachi asked, "I know I've seen him at a few of your parties, but I'm afraid I don't know much about him, other than he is very socially awkward."
"I don't think anyone really knows Sai, not even Sai. He used to be part of ROOT," Naruto answered.
Itachi's expression darkened at the mention of the now defunct group, "No, I don't think it's a good idea."
"It's okay really," Naruto rushed to assure him, "Sai is a good guy, he really is, he's just trying to find himself, and where he belongs. He's nothing like Danzo was, in fact I heard after Danzo's death, when the curse seal disappeared he told Tsunade everything he knew about the inner workings of ROOT."
"What makes you think he would be good to work with Kira?" He asked Hikari.
"I think it would be better just to show you," she turned to Naruto, "do you think he would be up for a sparring match with someone?"
"I could ask him."
"Good, why don't you go track him down and we'll meet at the Uchiha training grounds in an hour."
"Who's going to fight him though?" Shikamaru asked.
"I'll do it," Neji offered.
"Alright it's settled then. I'll see you guys in an hour."
~*~
"Why am I doing this again?" Sai asked as he made his way to the training grounds with Naruto.
"Well we sort of wanted to ask you if you wouldn't mind teaching Kira some of your techniques."
"Kira? The two-tailed jinchuriki you mean?"
"Yeah, you should see what she can do with some paper and ink, or paint or pretty much anything really."
The training grounds had just come into sight when Sai spotted the group waiting for them, "when did Hikari get so fat?"
"Shh don't say that too loud she might hear you," Naruto said urgently, he still remembered her reaction to Sasuke earlier that morning.
Sai looked thoughtful for a moment, "but she's having a baby right, so isn't getting fat a good thing?"
"Well yes, but you still shouldn't come out and say it, you might make her cry or worse. When girls are pregnant they don't have control over their emotions like they usually do."
"Girls are unusual creatures."
Naruto laughed at that statement, "yup that's why I like guys, but don't say that either. It just might be best to avoid saying anything about the way she looks or acts."
After an impressive show of Sai's talent the battle came to an end and Hikari invited everyone back to her place for dinner. Shikamaru and Ino couldn't stay because they were having dinner with Shikamaru's parents and Naruto wanted to find Sasuke to make sure he wasn't sulking over the events from that afternoon. Sai walked with them while Itachi and Kira had to stop by their place first, Sai had asked Kira if she could show him some of her work before he agreed to help her.
"Alright why don't you to head downstairs and I will call you when dinner's ready," Hikari told them, "I want to try something new tonight."
"Are you sure you don't want me to cook?" Neji offered, he was a little apprehensive these days when Hikari wanted to cook. The last time she made dinner it turned out to be some kind of foreign dish that was a little too spicy for his palate, and he had inadvertently upset her when he couldn't choke it down.
"Don't worry I'll keep the spices to a minimum this time, I'm also making some stir fry just incase I'm the only one to find it appetizing."
"I never got the chance to ask before, but why do you have a flute down here with the weapons?" Sai asked Neji as they waited for Itachi and Kira to join them.
"It's a demonic flute, used for a sound based genjutsu. It's Hikari's"
"I've never seen her use it."
"Nor have I, though I have no doubt she could, it was a gift from Orochimaru-sama, it used to belong to another member of the sound village that Hikari was friends with."
"The previous owner fell in battle?"
"Yes," Neji noticed Sai's gaze slip to Hikari second prized weapon, the Hone-toushin, "this was another weapon that was gifted to her, it's a bone blade to put it simply."
"Bone? Does that not make it less effective against steel weapons, it doesn't seem very practical."
"Normally I would agree with you however, this was made by the last surviving member of the Kaguya clan, they had a bone manipulation kekei genkai, it's as hard as steel and just as deadly."
"I wasn't sure what you would want to see so I just brought a little bit of everything," Kira announced as she and Itachi entered the room, she carried several sketchbooks and Itachi held several rolled up parchments.
She dropped the books in the corner and relieved Itachi of his burden and began to spread her paintings out so that Sai could view them.
"Why don't we let them be and we can go play a game of shogi," Neji suggested, Itachi was hesitant, as he still didn't trust Sai, but he followed anyway.
"You're very good, do you always use paint as a medium?"
"No, I use whatever I can get my hands on," she handed him one of the sketchbooks, "this one is mostly charcoal."
Sai took his time pouring over her work, she was incredibly talented, he would occasionally ask her about a certain piece, but he had already come to the conclusion that he would work with her as Naruto had suggested. "What did you use for color in this one? It's nothing I'm familiar with."
Kira looked over his shoulder at the sketch he was looking at, "wow, I had almost forgotten about that one, I used blood for Itachi's eyes, and created grass stains for the glow of the jars.
"I had no colored charcoal or paints with me that night so I had to make do with what I had. I'm surprised it's held up so well over the years."
"Blood? Whose blood?"
"My own of course."
"Hmm I wonder..." Sai trailed off, lost in thought for a moment before he came back to himself.
"So can you teach me?" Kira asked hopefully.
Sai gave her one of his rare true smiles, "I'll teach you."
She jumped up from where she had been sitting, and hugged Sai, "sorry," she said when she released him, "thank you, I will do my best."
"Dinner's ready," they heard Hikari call from upstairs.
"Would you like some help packing up," Sai offered, Kira nodded.
~*~
"What is it?" Itachi asked curiously.
"I'm not quite sure," Kira poked at it with her chopsticks.
"I don't think you're supposed to use chopsticks," Sai took in the disc shaped dish that sat in the middle of the table.
Neji just stared at it in confusion, he could tell it was made with some kind of wheat based dough, followed by a red sauce, some kind of ground meat, slices of mushrooms, and a lot melted cheese.
"I found the recipe in a foreign cookbook, it's called pizza, and you're right Sai, you don't use chopsticks, you use your hands." They all just continued to look at it, "and you call yourselves shinobi, where's your sense of adventure, dig in. Don't worry if you don't like it I made stir fry too, but you have to try at least one bite of the pizza first."
Sai grabbed a slice first and took a small bite, he chewed it for a moment before swallowing it, "it's really good."
"Thank you Sai," Hikari smiled at him, at least she could count on him for an honest answer, she was actually quite surprised that he had yet to say anything inappropriate. "From what I read in the cookbook, one of the most common toppings is pepperoni, but I thought that might make it a tad too spicy."
The others followed Sai's example and began to eat, Neji took a tentative bite, it did have a bit of spice to it but it wasn't overpowering, "good call," he told her. Itachi and Kira nodded their approval as well.
"So Sai what do you think, have you decided to work with Kira?" Itachi inquired of him.
"Yes, I think she will do very well, she has a lot of artistic talent, I can start to teach you whenever you like, just as long as it does not conflict with my other duties."
