Chapter 7. I will always return
A/N: This chapter takes place where When I'm gone ends
Hikari blinked and looked to Neji, her eyes clear, filled with Love, “Neji,” his name fell from her lips before she fell into unconsciousness, it was over, she was back.
A collective sigh of relief filled the room, she would be alright, Itachi had taken a chance and it had worked.
"Why did she lose consciousness?" Neji asked fixing his eyes on the older Uchiha.
"She just needs rest," Sasuke answered for his brother, "Tsukuyomi alters the perception of time, so while it only seemed to take a few seconds to us, it could have taken a lot longer. It can be very stressful on the body, but she'll be fine."
Itachi still hadn't spoken, he sat in the chair pressing the heels of his hands to his eyes, Kira rushed over to him, "'Tachi, are you okay? Did you over do it?" She asked quietly.
Neji looked over at them after settling Hikari back in bed, "I want to thank you Uchiha, without your help..." He trailed off.
"Don't mention it, I'm glad I could help," he stood up and turned to Sasuke, "are you ready to settle this little brother."
Sasuke and Kira burst into speech at the same time, Sasuke was cursing his brother, Kira insisted that he needed rest. Orochimaru's voice boomed above them all, "take it outside! Hikari needs to rest now and I won't have you disturbing her."
The trio quietly exited the room, Sasuke led them through the house intent on reaching one of the training grounds. Itachi stopped at the door to speak with Kira, "stay here Kira I don't want you to see this." He was surprised when all she did was glare at him and continue to follow Sasuke, leaving him to catch up.
He observed the way the two interacted without speaking, the conclusion hit him like a ton of bricks just as they reached their destination. "Why?" He said it so quietly they barely heard him. "Why did you tell him?" His voice shook in silent anger.
They both turned to look at him, "to be fair, I didn't think you were coming back because you neglected to tell me he was the one that was supposed to kill you. Perhaps if you had really trusted me with everything I wouldn't have said anything." She snapped at him before leaping into a tree and waited for them to begin, if she said anymore she would start crying again and she was too pissed off to cry.
The hurt in her voice overshadowed her anger, the last thing he had wanted to do was to cause her further suffering.
"Ready?" Sasuke asked him, at his brother's nod they took their starting positions and began their fight.
Kira watched from her perch, the brothers seemed evenly matched, but it was obvious both were holding back. Itachi because he longed for his brother to kill him, and Sasuke because all he wanted to do was kick the shit out of his brother, not kill him. They traded attacks for quite awhile before they were joined by Orochimaru who chose to lean up against the tree Kira had chosen.
"You're not trying hard enough little brother, that killing intent isn't there," Itachi taunted him.
"I'm not going to kill you you bastard. Just kick your ass until you understand what you have put me through all these years."
"If you won't do it, I'll just have to force your hand," he closed his left eye. Even from her perch Kira could see a blood red tear escape from his closed eye, she panicked, he had told her about this jutsu. "Amaterasu."
"Itachi no!" She screamed as she ran to shield Sasuke throwing her hands up to block her own face from the approaching black flames.
It took a second for him to process what was happening, he quickly closed his eyes when he did. But it was a moment too late as the fire scorched her arms and singed off several inches of her long hair. "Kira!" He ran towards her, but Sasuke was got there first.
He quickly assessed her wounds, "let's get you to Kabuto," he said placing an arm around her shoulders and began to lead her away.
"Kira, I'm sorry."
She glared at him, her eyes full of fierce fury but it was Sasuke that spoke, "we're done here, if you still long for death so badly you'll have to seek it elsewhere, or do it yourself. I think you've caused enough damage to both of us." His voice was as hard and cold as his glare. "Come on Kira," she went with him in silence leaving Itachi behind.
Itachi was frozen in place, what had he done? She trusted him and he had hurt her, the one thing she had trusted him never to do. Sasuke was right, he had caused enough damage to them both. He was overcome with guilt. He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked over to see Orochimaru standing there next to him.
"I think it's time you moved on Itachi, your brother forgives you for what you did and that girl loves you. The only one who can't seem to let it go is you. Take some time and think about that." He walked back to the house as well leaving Itachi alone with his thoughts.
Kira sat on an examining table in the infirmary as Kabuto treated the burns on her arms, tears streaming down her face. Sasuke leaned against the wall watching with disinterest.
"Does it hurt much?" Kabuto asked gently, she just shook her head. "Nothing I can do about the hair, but it'll grow back. These burns are bad, I'll apply some salve and wrap them up. Normally burns of this calibre would leave scars but with your advanced healing it should be okay. Take it easy on them for the next couple days." Kabuto motioned for Sasuke to come over so he could bandage his smaller superficial wounds from the fight. "Will one of you tell me what happened out there?"
They exchanged a look before Sasuke answered, "Itachi tried to use Amaterasu on me, Kira rushed out to shield me."
"He was trying to force Sasuke to kill him." Kira finished for him. "Kabuto-san can I stay here tonight, I don't really want to go back to my room."
"Of course you can Kira-kun, we will talk more in the morning and if you want I'm sure we can get you settled in another room."
"Thank you."
Kabuto finished up with Sasuke before excusing himself from the room. "You want me to leave?" Sasuke asked her.
Kira nodded, "yeah I need sometime to think." Once he was gone she laid down, she didn't blame Itachi for what happened, it was her own fault for interfering. What she was angry about was the fact that even though Sasuke had forgiven him he still wanted to die. Was his brother’s forgiveness not enough, did her love for him mean nothing. She closed her eyes and tried to sleep, but she couldn't, not when all she could smell was burnt hair.
She searched the room for scissors, and did her best to straighten it out, working from the shortest point. By the time she was done it fell just a few inches above her shoulders. She laid back down but sleep continued to elude her.
Late into the night she heard the door creak open and footsteps approached the bed. She had her eyes closed, she had still been pursuing sleep, she didn't open them now, she knew who it was and wasn't ready to face him yet.
"Kira?" he whispered, he knew she wasn't asleep and could hear him. She didn't answer just turned her back to him. "I'm sorry that I hurt you," she still didn't respond. "I understand, I'll go," he turned to leave only to realize something, or rather someone had grabbed his sleeve, she looked up at him with a tear streaked face.
"Dammit Itachi, no you don't understand, not at all!" she screamed at him in exasperation. "I don't want you leave, I never have and I never will. I just want to be by your side that's all I've ever wanted. Why is that so hard to understand?
"I tried to understand before, I really did, I thought what you told me, about your impending death, was unavoidable, that it had been predetermined by others because of what you had to do. But then I find out it was you who arranged your own death warrant, by lying to your brother no less.
"This was your choice and your choice alone, it still is. Sasuke and I, we want no part in it. So if you want to leave, leave. Should you decide to grow a fucking brain we'll be waiting." She turned her back on him once more, not caring that he was witnessing her falling apart. She was done trying to be strong.
He couldn't move, just stood there watching her body racked with sobs. He wanted to tell her it would all be okay, that he would stay with her. But his guilt held him back, he still hadn't forgiven himself for what he had done, didn't know if he ever could. It was something he would need to ponder over, he bent down to kiss her hair, before walking away with a heavy heart.
He found Sasuke leaning against the wall right outside the door, "I thought I heard heard her dulcet tones, figured you were the one responsible."
"What do you want Sasuke?" He asked, his voice void of emotion.
"I just wanted to see what your choice would be, but seeing as you just walked out on her again, it's easy to tell. Tell me big brother, just how many times have you walked out on her?" His voice dripped with disdain. "Yet she remains, always waiting for the next time, sounds kind of familiar doesn't it?" Sasuke turned to go back to his room.
"Sasuke," Itachi called out, Sasuke stopped but refused to face him, "I haven't made my decision yet, I...I need sometime first."
"Hn," was his only reply before leaving his brother behind.
The next few days found Kira sulking around the house as she carefully avoided Itachi. He was still there which she took as a good sign but he still hadn't approached her, and she wouldn't break and seek him out first. She had told him how she felt about the situation, now it was up to him.
Five days after the brothers fought, Sasuke found Kira alone in the library, sitting in front of her sketchpad glaring at a blank page as if it had offended her. "Nothing yet?" he asked her, she shook her head. "Look, Hikari is finally up for traveling, so her, Neji and I are heading back to Konoha today. Do you want to come with us? You could meet that friend of mine I told you about, also it might do you both some good to put some distance between you."
She thought about it for a few minutes before responding. "Okay."
Sasuke nodded, "alright pack your bag and meet us by the door when you're ready."
She tore a page out of her sketchbook and scribbled a quick note for Itachi explaining where she had gone. She knew that when, and if, he did come looking for her he would go to the library. She then went to pack her bags.
"Is she coming?" Hikari asked when Sasuke joined them down by the door.
"Yeah, she just went to pack her bag."
Hikari saw Itachi going around the side of the house out of the corner of her eye, "I'll meet you guys outside, I just need to do something real quick," she gave Neji a quick peck on the cheek before running outside after Itachi.
She caught up to him a short distance away. "Itachi!" he stopped to look at her.
"Hikari, hi, is there something I can do for you?"
"We're heading back to Konoha today, and well I never really had a chance to thank you for helping me."
He waved it off, "you don't have to thank me, I just told you what you needed to hear."
She gave him a small smile, "that's just it though, I guess what I really needed was someone impartial to point out to me what was there all along. All this time, despite constant reassurances from those around me, I still blamed myself for what happened. So thank you."
"You're welcome Hikari."
"Hikari, it's time to go!" Neji called from a distance.
"Itachi, just remember, there are people waiting to help you too, bye." She gave him a quick wave and ran to catch up with the others.
When they arrived in Konoha, Neji and Hikari insisted that they would deliver the peace treaty to Tsunade so that Sasuke could show Kira the house.
"This is it," he announced when they got there.
Kira looked slightly apprehensive, "is this your childhood home?"
"Yeah, hope that doesn't bother you too much, it takes some getting used to."
"It's fine that doesn't bother me, it's just..." She trailed off.
"You were thinking about Itachi?" She nodded, "you could see it if you want, his old room I mean. Not much to look at, I had it cleared out years ago, everything is stored in the attic, for some reason I just couldn't get rid of it." He led her upstairs, "I usually keep it locked up, though I suppose there's no reason to anymore," he stopped outside the door, "do you want to see it?"
Kira shook her head, "no it would just feel weird."
Sasuke brought her down the hall and opened the door to the guest room, "you have your own bathroom," he pointed out to her. "Did you want some time to get settled in?"
"Yeah, thanks for letting me stay here Sasuke."
"Don't worry about it. Don't take too long, I imagine as soon as Naruto hears I'm back he'll be banging down the door."
She took a quick shower and headed downstairs to find Sasuke in the kitchen making dinner, "there's coffee if you want some, juice and water is in the fridge if you prefer," he pointed to the cupboard, "glasses are in there, help yourself."
She was just pouring a glass of orange juice when they heard a loud banging on the front door, Sasuke smirked, "that'll be him."
"Shit Sasuke, where have you been? You missed all the action, it's been crazy around here. They're saying we're signing a peace treaty with the sound village." She heard the new arrival all the way from the door.
"I already know all that dobe, come here I want you to meet someone." The two young men entered the kitchen, "this is Kira."
Naruto looked at her, a look of recognition dawned on his face, "I know you, I thought I heard you tell that little girl your name was Yanagi?"
Sasuke quirked an eyebrow at her, and she blushed, she recognized him too, she still had the sketch she had done of him buried in her bag somewhere. "Sorry about that, I was trying to keep a low profile. My real name is Kira, it's nice to meet you."
"Naruto Uzumaki," he shook her hand, "how do you know the teme?"
"It's kind of a long story." She looked to Sasuke, unsure of how much the blonde man knew or should be told.
"Sit down dobe I'll give you the short version."
Naruto took a seat at the table next to Kira and across from Sasuke. "Okay what's up?"
Sasuke sighed trying to figure out how to put it, that would result in the least amount of outbursts from the loud mouth. "Alright, you know the basics, about what happened to my clan?"
"Yeah, yeah, massacred by your brother making you into a revenge seeking bastard," he said with a trace of a smirk, "what of it?"
"Turns out that's not exactly what happened. I recently learned that Itachi was ordered to commit the massacre, because the clan was planning a coup to take over the village."
Naruto's eyes got comically wide, "you're joking."
Sasuke shook his head, "on top of that, all this time he hasn't really been working with the Akatsuki but spying on them. That's why any attacks he was part of against you were non-fatal."
"You're sure about this? It couldn't be a lie?"
"No, the Hokage already knows, a few other people do too. The action you were talking about, that was the assassination of Danzo right?" Naruto nodded, "Tsunade-sama brought Itachi into the village to carry it out, he was the one who ordered the massacre."
Naruto glanced over at Kira, "where do you fit into all of this?"
"I met Itachi when I was nine years old, after my parents died, he has been looking after me and keeping me safe all these years."
"So why are you here now?"
"She needs your help," Sasuke answered for her, "help with training, particularly chakra control."
"You're kidding right," Naruto laughed, "come on Sasuke you know how much trouble I had with that when we were kids, and look at what a disaster it turned out to be when I tried to teach Konohamaru."
Sasuke smirked at him, "true, but you will have a special understanding of Kira's situation, I think you would have an easier time helping her out than anyone else, except for maybe Jiraiya, since he was the one to teach you after all."
Naruto was confused, he looked back and forth between the two of them before settling on Kira, "what's this situation he's talking about?"
Kira took a deep breath, and Sasuke covered his ears in preparation of the impending outburst, "I have the two tailed beast sealed inside of me."
"What?!" Naruto exclaimed loudly.
Sasuke slapped him upside the head, "keep your voice down dobe, do you want the whole village to hear you? Yes she's a jinchuriki, so what do you say will you try to help her or not?"
Naruto's broke out in a huge grin, "sounds like fun."
It had been two weeks since Sasuke had left the sound village with his team. Itachi had had plenty of time to think things over, yet it was Hikari's parting words that stuck with him the most. Perhaps she had also been right when she said that sometimes all that was needed was the impartial view of an outsider.
He had been holding himself back for so long, ignoring what he had right in front of him, Kira. Sasuke had forgiven him for what he had done, when he had met with the Hokage she had offered him a immunity if he wished to return, all he had to do was make the choice. Still that guilt ate at him, even now, but just like he had told Hikari, he didn't have to deal with it alone. He had Kira, and perhaps with a little work he would have Sasuke too. With this in mind he headed for the library in hopes that Kira would be there. Instead he found the room empty, a page from Kira's sketchbook laying on the table.
Itachi,
I have decided to go to
Konoha with Sasuke, he has a
friend he thinks can help me with
my training. I'm sorry I left without
telling you. When you get this I
hope you are ready to see me again.
Always, Kira
He folded up the letter and put it in his pocket. He let Orochimaru know he was leaving, before packing a bag and setting out for Konoha, it was time to go home, time to return to her.
I hear the wind call your name
It calls me back home again
It sparks up the fire
A flame that still burns
Oh it's to you I'll always return
I still feel your breath on my skin
I hear your voice deep within
The sound of my lover
A feeling so strong
It's to you
I'll always belong
Now I know it's true
My every road leads to you
And in the hour of darkness darlin'
Your light gets me through
Wanna swim in your river
Be warmed by your sun
Bathe in your waters
Cos you are the one
I can't stand the distance
I can't dream alone
I can't wait to see you
Ya I'm on my way home
Oh I hear the wind call your name
The sound that leads me home again
It sparks up the fire
A flame that still burns
Oh, it's to you
I will always return
Wanna swim in your river
Be warmed by your sun
Bathe in your waters
Cos you are the one
I can't stand the distance
I can't dream alone
I can't wait to see you
Ya I'm on my way home
Oh I hear the wind call your name
The sound that leads me home again
It sparks up the fire
A flame that still burns
Oh, it's to you
I will always return
I've seen every sunset
And with all that I've learned
It's to you
I will always
Always return
Kira was at the training grounds with Naruto, she was amazed at how much easier it was when Naruto explained jutsus and techniques to her. Of course Naruto always explained things in the simplest way possible so that helped matters. Sasuke was also right about the distance helping, she threw herself into the training so she spent less time thinking of Itachi. She still missed him but she understood that he needed time to sort things out.
Right now she was in the middle of a sparring match against Hikari. The other girl was still much more advanced than she was but Kira had improved a lot too. Suddenly Hikari stopped, Naruto and Sasuke who had been watching the match stared wide eyed at something behind her as well. Kira slowly turned around, not sure what to expect.
Itachi stood behind her, panting heavily, he hadn't stopped once since leaving the sound village. He watched as she turned to him, unsure of what her reaction would be.
"Itachi?" She stared at him as if he were an illusion that would disappear if she blinked. She crossed the space between them in less than a second, nearly knocking him over with the force she hit him with. He wrapped her in his arms, "you came back?" she sobbed against him.
He buried his face in the crook of her neck, "always Kira, always."
After a few minutes Hikari spoke up, "well this match is over, why don't we head back?"
Kira reluctantly withdrew from his embrace, taking his hand, they followed the group back towards Sasuke's house. Itachi paused at the end of the walkway in front of his old house, Sasuke fell back to stand at his side.
"It hasn't changed much," he observed.
"Yeah, I never took the time to, I just moved everything into the attic."
He couldn't make his feet move, his mind flooded of memories of the past, of that night. Kira gave his hand a squeeze bringing him back from his dark thoughts. He slipped an arm around her waist, drawing her close to him. He wasn't sure he was ready to take that step.
"Why don't you all come over, Neji should be home soon and I'll make dinner," Hikari chirped.
"Ramen?" Naruto asked hopefully.
"Only if you help with the dishes," she joked. She led them all into the den, and set about lighting a fire. "We have a guest room, if you would rather stay here," she offered.
"Are you sure that's okay?" Itachi asked her. It was hard to be in here too, but not as bad, judging by this room, they had given the house a new life, the whole atmosphere was warmer than he remembered. Before it had been oppressive.
"Why not pick out one of the other houses to renovate?" Sasuke suggested, "stay here until it's done."
Itachi still looked hesitant. "What kind of condition are the other houses in?"
"Some have held up better than others. I find it hard to go into some of them." Sasuke admitted.
"Why not just demolish them all?" Naruto suggested. "They're not doing any good just standing empty."
Both Sasuke and Itachi took a moment to think it over, "it would cost a lot of money," Itachi pointed out, if he was honest, he was all for tearing it all down, but Sasuke had been the sole occupant of the area all of these years, it should be his choice.
Sasuke snorted, "money isn't an issue."
Hikari watched the two men in front of her, neither seemed particularly opposed to the idea, "if you play your cards right it could even make you more money in the long run. When I moved here it was clear the housing market is shit, Aunt Tsunade couldn't even take me in. If you tear down and rebuild you could sell or rent them out."
Sasuke nodded, "that is true, we could even space them out a bit more too."
Hikari laughed at him, "still as anti-social as ever."
"Because you're image of a social butterfly, you don't like large crowds either," Sasuke shot back at her, but his voice lacked his usual venom.
Neji chose that moment to walk in, Hikari pulled him over to sit with her, he noticed the presence of the older Uchiha but said nothing, he owed the man a great deal. "What's going on?"
"We were just talking about large scale demolition," she told him. "Do you mind if Itachi and Kira stay here until a new house can be built?"
"If that's what you want, I have no problem with it."
Hikari gave him a huge smile, "I'll be right back," she came back moments later with a large bottle of sake and enough cups for everyone. "I keep this in the house just incase Aunt Tsunade comes over," she said as she poured everyone some, "here's to new beginnings."
A/N: next fic will take place after this one ends. Pairings will mainly be Itachi/Kira and Hikari/Neji with appearances by Sasuke/Naruto and some Hinata/??? Hint: it's not an OC and he's not from Konoha, So keep your eyes peeled for New Beginnings
