Chapter 7: The Best Thing
A/N: Lyrics from The Best Thing by Savage Garden
After Ino and Hikari finished cleaning up the mess in the bathroom, there had been enough hairs to make up a medium sized dog, they headed back to the living room with the boys, Ino had promised to fill in Shikamaru on their plans on the way home that night. The two young men were locked in what looked to be a very intense game, Neji took notice of the girls' approach, Hikari's new hair looked stunning. He beckoned her over with a hand gesture and as soon a she got close enough, he grabbed her hand and pulled her into his lap. Hikari let out a faint squeak in surprise before relaxing against him.
“How's the game? Looks intense.” Hikari asked as she reached behind him to grab another large pillow off the couch and threw it to Ino, so that she could sit next to Shikamaru.
“It is, any suggestions for me tonight,” he purred softly in her ear. Yes he was teasing her a bit, he hadn't been able to stop thinking about her little display at the hospital all day. Of course it didn't help that he had caught her adjusting herself several more times, though whether she was doing it unconsciously or not he wasn't sure.
Hikari shivered at the sound, “Nope, you can play your own game this time,” she said playfully, making Shikamaru laugh. “Keep it up and I just might help him out,” she shot at him. She stayed on his lap for the remainder of the game, she couldn't get the way his voice sounded out of her head. She could feel butterflies coming alive in the pit of her stomach causing her to squirm.
Neji bit back a moan, she was driving him insane, every time she moved, he didn't know how much more he could take of this. “Stop moving,” he whispered, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear as he spoke.
“Huh?” she asked slightly dazed, she shifted slightly again, and that's when she realized, just what she had been doing to him. Hikari's eyes widened in surprise, and she had to do her best to fight down the blush, the last thing they needed was to alert their friends to what was going on.
Shikamaru had noticed awhile ago, shortly after Neji had pulled her into his lap, his concentration had taken a big hit and it had impacted his game play. He wasn't going to say anything though. Thankfully Ino had no patience for Shogi so she had flicked on the TV and was now watching some reality show.
“Sorry,” Hikari whispered back to him, and did her best not to move after that.
Neji was barely paying attention to the game anymore, he just wanted it to end. Finally Shikamaru put him out of his misery, “Well that was a good game,” Shikamaru said, “are you up for one Hikari?”
“No I'm good, I think I'm going to head to bed, I find I'm still being effected by the changes. Plus I need to start training again tomorrow. We've had so many set backs I'm afraid we're falling behind schedule."
Ino laughed, “please the only reason you guys are training at all is because it's been ordered. If Kakashi-sensei could get out of it he would. Everyone knows that both Naruto and Sasuke are Chuunin level at the very least, and you have more than proved yourself capable as well.”
“None the less it still needs to be done, so I need a good night sleep.”
“Okay but we need to do this again soon, promise?” Ino asked.
“Promise, now get out of my house,” she joked. She walked the three of them to the door, Neji giving her a chaste kiss before leaving with them.
Hikari got changed into her new pajamas, it turned out that Ino and Tsunade had done really well with her new wardrobe, they had actually paid attention to what she had worn before and had kept that in mind when they went shopping. She climbed into bed and lay down, waiting for Neji to come join her, she had long ago given him the spare key she had. After a few minutes she sighed, what was taking him so long, maybe Ino had got to talking and he was having a hard time excusing himself. She was startled out of her train of thought by a gentle tap on her window. She jumped out of bed and saw Neji standing outside, she opened the window quickly, “What are you doing?” she asked him as he climbed in.
“Hiashi-sama has someone watching your house, I had to slip past them, I think they are starting to suspect.” He noticed a frown mar her features at that news, he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her softly. “It will be fine,” he assured her, “We just need to be extra careful.”
“I told you shouldn't have stayed that night.”
“It was worth it,” he kissed her again.
“You're not going to distract me from this you know, you can't just keep kissing me and make me forget,” Hikari said trying to sound stern and failing miserably when he moved his lips to her throat, she gasped in surprise. “O-okay but we'll talk about this in the morning,” she stuttered.
Neji smiled at her in the dark and gently pulled away. He grabbed something to wear to bed out of the dresser and retreated to the bathroom to change. Hikari slipped back into bed, and got comfortable. Neji was back soon, he slipped into bed beside her wearing just a pair of black shorts. He drew her to him, his arm around her waist, her head resting on his bare chest, one leg slung over his, they fit together perfectly. They lay there just listening to each others breathing, Neji tracing lazy circles on her back.
“I'm so happy to be home,” she told him quietly.
“Looking forward to a nightmare free night?” he asked,
“Well those pills from Aunt Tsunade did their job but they left me feeling terrible after waking up.”
Neji hummed in response, he had missed this, sleeping with her in his arms. It just felt right. Hikari raised up to kiss him, Neji moaned as he felt her press her chest against his side, she ran a hand across his washboard abs, caressing him. Neji released her lips and descended upon her throat, nipping at her ear, eliciting a moan from her. He ran his hand down her side coming to rest at her hip.
Hikari kissed his chest reveling in the firmness of his muscles as they flexed beneath her ministrations. Her hand wandered lower settling at the dip just above the waistband of his shorts.
Neji gasped, feeling himself grow hard at the feel of her being so close. He stilled his movements before reaching for her hand. “Hikari, we have to stop,” he voice husky with need.
She knew what he was talking about, yet she wanted to continue. She flexed her fingers beneath his hand, her nails digging into his flesh ever so slightly. “Please Hikari,” he moaned at her continued touch. It was killing him, “I don't want to rush you into anything,” he tried to explain. She stopped and nodded against his chest. He kissed the top of her head, “I'll be right back,” he told her and slipped out of bed. He had something to take care of something if he was going to get any sleep tonight.
Hikari turned onto her side, thinking over what had just happened, had she misread the signal? Had she done something wrong? Then she remembered, she was damaged goods, she wasn't good enough. She fought back tears, she had fallen for him hard, trusted him with everything, but she would never be good enough. She wrapped her arms around her chest trying to keep it together but failing. She heard him come back to bed but she kept her back turned to him, not wanting him to see her cry. Not wanting his pity.
He heard her stifled sob, and his heart went out to her. He wrapped an arm around her waist and tried to pull her against him but she resisted. He sighed, he had hurt her, it was his fault and he had to make it right, had to make her understand. “Hikari,” he said softly, “look at me, please.” She turned slightly forcing her eyes to meet his. Neji gently wiped her tears away, “I'm sorry,” he told her.
“It's not your fault,” she said with a shaky breath, “I just got carried away, I'm the one that should be sorry, I know I'm not good enough,” she dropped her gaze, “damaged goods.”
“Hikari, no, no, that's not it at all,” he told her honestly, “No I want us to do this right, to take it slow, I don't want you to feel pressured into anything. Look at me, you are not damaged goods, you are more than good enough, you are perfect. Don't you let anyone ever tell you otherwise.” He pulled her into his arms, “Understand?” Hikari nodded but said nothing. He looked down at her, “I'm here with you, I don't care about any of that, I care about you, Hikari, nothing else.” He pressed his lips to hers, putting all the words he couldn't say into that kiss. He felt her melt against him and he knew she understood. He would never leave her, never. God help him if he ever came face to face with that man who did this to her. He held her tightly, even in sleep, he would not let her go.
Neji was gone the next morning, after their conversation before bed last night he knew she would be upset with him if he put himself as risk again. He knew that she was right and there was no doubt that his Uncle knew they were involved now. Thanks to Ino and Sakura the whole village was aware, but if he ever found out they had been sharing a bed, no matter how innocently then Hiashi would do everything in his power to put an end to it. It wasn't just him that he had to worry about, it was Hikari too, he wouldn't put it past his uncle to kick her off of Hyuuga lands indefinitely. They would have to be extra cautious.
Hikari had felt when Neji had slipped out in the morning, she lay in bed for a few more minutes before dragging herself out of bed, she had things to do to prepare for tomorrow. She penned a letter to Orochimaru requesting his assistance and dropped it off at the post office, paid the extra fee to have it sent by their fastest messenger bird, before continuing on her way to meet up with her team. At the end of training she relished in the feeling of her burning muscles. A sign of the hard work it would take to rebuild what she has lost. She roped Naruto into visiting the weapons shop on the way home.
“So what are you looking for?” he asked her curiously.
“I need to find a gift for Neji,” she answered thoughtfully as she browsed the selection. “I figured he would prefer something that is actually useful instead of some cheap trinket.”
Naruto laughed, “I don't think he would care what he got, as long as it came from you.”
“Hello Naruto, Hikari, something I can help you with?” Tenten asked them, her parents had her minding the shop today.
“She's looking for a present for Neji's birthday,” Naruto answered for her.
“Yes Tenten, you must have some sort of idea, you're on the same team as him.” Hikari chirped.
Tenten pondered the question for a moment, “Let's see what we can come up with then, what's in your budget?” Hikari answered, causing both Tenten and Naruto's eyes to widen in surprise.
“Holy shit you're loaded,” Naruto exclaimed causing Hikari to blush.
“Shut up Naruto, my Uncles have a habit of wanting to spoil me. I hate when they spend money on me needlessly but they insisted, finally I had to put a cap on them and make them promise that they would only buy me things for birthdays and special occasions, then they just started depositing money into my bank account and wouldn't let me return it. They claim it's a loan that I can pay back when I get my inheritance when I turn eighteen, but god knows that they will try and talk me out of it when the time comes.”
“So just do the same thing they did to you and deposit in their accounts without telling them,” He suggested.
“Already planning on it,” she smirked evilly, “Now back to what we were talking about before, Tenten, please tell me you have something he will like.”
“I have just the thing,” She led them to the back of the shop, opened a display case and pulled out a pair of gleaming Sai. “He's been admiring these for years, they're top of the line, made with tamahagane, expertly forged.”
“Perfect, I'll take them,” Hikari said beaming.
“Glad I could help, so what do you guys have planned for his birthday? Are you having a party?”
“No, not after last time, I think I've learned my lesson, at least until my birthday,” she said with a smirk. “I just have a little something planned for the two of us.”
“Oh really do tell?” Tenten said in interest.
“Nothing like that,” Hikari said blushing brightly, at least not that she would tell anyone. “I'm just going to make him dinner and maybe we'll watch a movie or something.”
“Yeah yeah, if you say so. Fair warning though you might want to lose the receipt from these, then he can't try to return them. Well he can try and I can refuse,” She laughed. “He also is not really fond of gifts.”
“Yeah I kind of assumed as much, considering that I had to find out that tomorrow was his birthday from Ino.” she casually tossed the receipt into the trash bin behind the counter, “Thanks for your help I can't wait to give them to him.”
“Okay bye.”
Dragged Naruto out of the shop and down the street, occasionally stopping to look at different displays. They came across a store selling Tarot cards, books on astrology and advertising palm readings. Hikari stopped to peruse the selection.
“You're not actually into this kind of stuff are you?” Naruto asked her.
“Not really why?” she said quietly, “I just find it interesting, a total crock but interesting none the less. My mother used to go to psychics all the time and drag me along. It's all just about knowing how to read a person and tell them what they want to hear to make them believe you. You could read my mother like an open book she was very open to suggestion, I bet Shikamaru could do it, he's good at that kind of thing.”
“Neji hates this kind of thing, he used to be a big believer in fate and destiny.”
“Really, well then perhaps a set of Tarot cards would make the perfect gag gift, before I give him his real present,” she laughed and picked out a deck to purchase.
“So, you're really not going to come to any more parties until after your birthday?”
“I didn't say that, I just said I've learned my lesson, if there are anymore parties I'll come but I won't drink, and I may have to gracefully bow out before things get to crazy, but I'll come.”
“Oh good, so when is your birthday anyway?”
“If I tell you, you have to promise no surprises that day,” she told him seriously.
“Promise.”
“November seventh, I usually celebrate it with Uncle Jiraiya, since his is just a few days later. Say can I keep these at your place until tomorrow? I don't want Neji to see them before hand.”
“Of course.”
“Thank you, I'll come pick them up after training tomorrow. But I have to get going now, he still doesn't even know that I'm aware its his birthday so I don't want to do anything to make him suspect.”
“Gotcha, see you tomorrow Hikari.”
That night Hikari dragged Neji out for dinner at that tiny restaurant again, because that's where she had told Ino to send Shikamaru. They were half way through their meal and Hikari was starting to worry that the lazy ninja had refused to help when he came sauntering in. Hikari had to stop herself from sighing in relief.
“Hey Neji you got any plans tomorrow?”
“No,” he looked suspiciously at him, “why?”
“Just thought you might fancy a game of Shogi tomorrow, who knows I might even take it easy on you for.....”
Neji cut him off quickly, “Sounds good, what time?” he gave him a pointed that clearly said choose your word carefully.
“Three?” Shikamaru asked innocently.
“Alright I'll see you then, or was there something else you needed?”
“Not at all, see you tomorrow,” he said and made a quick exit.
“What was that about?” Hikari asked curiously.
“Sorry, it's just been a long day. I guess I'm a little stressed out.”
“Maybe we should head home then, get some rest, make sure you're not so stressed out tomorrow when you meet Shikamaru, we don't want you to disembowel him, then we would only have each other for competition when it comes to Shogi,” she joked.
Neji sighed and nodded, they paid the bill and headed for home. He hadn't been lying when he said he was stressed, he just hadn't told her why. He had no use for birthdays, hadn't in a long time. When he was young birthdays were a time to spend with family and friends, but after losing his parents at such an early age, and his uncle hating him, he hadn't had many friends back then so his birthday became just another day. When he got older and made some friends it still wasn't the same, it just reminded him of how much he wished his parents were there, no one else seemed to get it. He hadn't told Hikari because he didn't want her to make a big fuss about it. It was just another day.
She could feel the tension coming off him, was she making a mistake by planning a surprise for his birthday? Did he really hate it that much, and if so why? It was too late to back out now, so she would just do what she could to ease his tension. They got to the house and took his hand and led him to the bedroom without a word, she began to arrange the pillows in a way that she could comfortably sit against them but still be upright.
“What are you doing?” he asked confused.
Hikari got on the bed, folded her legs beneath her, and looked at him. “Sit,” She pointed to the spot directly in front of her, her voice leaving no room for argument. Neji shook his head and did as he was told and sat facing her. Hikari closed her eyes, sighed, and shook her head. “Turn around.” He did, she reached up and began to massage his shoulders, he attempted to move and she tightened her grip briefly, “Stop, just relax, trust me.”
Neji stilled and allowed her to continue. Before he knew it his tense muscles were beginning to loosen, she worked her way down his spine, kneading out the knots as she went, back up again, returning to his shoulders before moving to his neck. “Better?” she asked him.
“Loads better, thank you.”
“Good now lean back,” he raised an eye brown at her. “Please?” He obliged, she took a hold of one arm and worked her way down, his palms, fingers, nothing escaped her notice. Before moving on to the other.
Neji closed his eyes, released a breath he didn't even realize he had been holding. He had never had a massage before, he didn't really like people touching him, now he was more relaxed than he had ever been, and he knew Hikari was the only one he would ever let do this. It felt wonderful as she returned to his neck and worked her way up and along his jaw bone, into the scalp, he never wanted to leave, he felt her fingers on the back of his head, she stilled for just a moment before she went to remove the piece of fabric covering his forehead, “Stop,” he sat up quickly.
“Did I do something wrong?” she asked in a small voice.
He immediately regretting having moved when he saw the look on her face, that was two nights in a row now that he had hurt her like this. She had trusted him with everything about her, the cutting, the abuse, she had even confided in him about Orochimaru. He could trust her with this, he knew he could, yet he had panicked. “I'm sorry, its just...” He sighed and lowered his head, reached back and untied the knot before raising up to meet her gaze again. “It's the mark of the branch house. When the heir, or heiress of the main house turns three a member of the branch house is branded with this mark, it deactivates the Byakugan after death to protect the secrets of the clan, it is also used to control us, if they activate it, it will cause extreme pain, if they do it for long enough it kills.”
Hikari reached for him and traced the mark with her fingers, he let his eyes fall shut. She placed a kiss right in the center of his forehead, sending shivers down his spine. She placed a hand on the side of his face and he leaned into her touch. Reaching up to cover her hand with his own before turning his head slightly to kiss her palm. No words needed to be said, nothing further to explain. She pulled him to her and held him close, it was her turn to be there for him and understand, just like he had done so many times for her already.
Morning came quickly and with it Neji was gone. Hikari had a full day of training ahead of her meaning she wouldn't even get to see him until tonight. She was a bit nervous, what if he didn't like it, she pushed that thought to the back of her mind and headed out for the day. There would be a lot to do and very little time to do it.
After training she went with Naruto to grab the gifts from his house, which he had taken it upon himself to wrap them for her, she was also able to convince Naruto to help them set up. Then she stopped by the post office to pick up the parcel she knew would be waiting for her. Then it was off to the flower shop to meet up with Ino. They had decided that roses were too cliché so Ino had a large box of water lilies ready when she got there, it made Hikari glad that she had gotten Naruto to come along because each of the eight flowers had it's own decorative bowl to go with it, and they still had to pick up candles as well. When they finally got back to her place it was already well past four.
“How long can Shikamaru keep him busy for?” Hikari asked Ino.
“As long as we need him to, he's just waiting for the call from us to let him know when it's safe for Neji to leave.”
“Excellent.”
While Hikari began placing candles around the house Ino got to work setting up the flowers. Each bowl had to be set up with a piece of glass inserted to separate the flower from the floating candle that would be placed in there as well. Naruto had been sent to the small restaurant that Neji liked, to pick up his favorite meal. It was nearly six by the time they were done setting up. Ino called to give Shikamaru the go a head before her and Naruto left for the night wishing her luck.
Hikari quickly wrapped the gifts she had Orochimaru send and then went about lighting the candles one by one, singing to herself as she went.
Neji was relieved when Shikamaru finally finished the game, it was like he had been taking his time just to piss him off. He just wanted to get home and see Hikari, he hadn't been able to see her since he left that morning and she had still been asleep. When he got to her place the lights were off and the curtains drawn, he briefly considered that she had been exhausted after training and had called it an early night but then he remembered there would be no way she would fall asleep without him there. She was probably just watching one of those scary movies she liked to watch in the dark. He was about to open the door when he heard her singing, something she rarely did when she knew someone was listening, he would wait until she was finished before he went in, he loved to hear her sing.
Never want to fly
Never want to leave
Never want to say what you mean to me
Never want to run
Frightened to believe
You're the best thing about me
Sometimes I feel like this is only chemistry
Stuck in a maze searching for a way to
Shut down turn around feel the ground beneath me
You're so close where do you end where do I begin?
Always pushing and pulling
Sometimes sanity takes vacation time on me
I'm in a daze stumbling bewildered
North of gravity head up in the stratosphere
You and I roller coaster riding love
You're the center of adrenaline
And I'm beginning to understand
Never want to fly
Never want to leave
Never want to say what you mean to me
Never want to run
Frightened to believe
You're the best thing about me
Walk on broken glass make my way through fire
These are the things I would do for love
Farewell peace of mind kiss goodbye to reason
Up is down the impossible occurs each day
This intoxication thrills me
I only pray it doesn't kill me
Never want to fly
Never want to leave
Never want to say what you mean to me
Never want to run
Frightened to believe
You're the best thing about me
You're the center of adrenaline
And I'm beginning to understand
You could be the best thing about me
Never want to fly
Never want to leave
Never want to say what you mean to me
Never want to run
Frightened to believe
You're the best thing about me
You could be the best thing about me
What if you're the best thing about me?
Neji put his key in her door and unlocked it, he opened the door to find the house glowing with candle light, every surface that they could be placed upon was covered with them, he took in several bowls filled with floating flowers and candles, Hikari was seated at the dining table watching him, waiting to see what his reaction would be.
“What is all this?” he asked.
“Can't I do something nice just because I want to?” she said with obviously fake indignation.
“Alright, who told you?” He asked, but surprisingly he wasn't upset by it. He was strangely touched, it was always different with her. “Ino?”
“Yes.” she said quietly.
“Shikamaru was in on it too?”
She dropped her head, “Naruto and Tenten helped a little too.”
Neji dropped to his knees at her feet, he took her hands in his, “Thank-you,” he kissed her hands.
“So you're not mad?”
“I'm not mad.”
“Do you like it?”
“I love it.”
“Happy Birthday Neji,” She kissed him.
After dinner she led him to the living room where she had stashed his presents. She handed him the first one and watched as he opened the Tarot cards. He glared at the cards but then looked up to see her struggling to hold in the laughter, he pounced and caged her body with his own, she squeaked. “Very funny,” he said and claimed her lips.
She moaned into the kiss before gently pushing him back, “Now for the real presents.”
He let her up and she handed him four gifts three small ones and a larger one. He opened the three small ones first, they contained jars of different creams.
“This one expedites healing and diminishes scars. This one is great for burns and it cools the skin, and this one is the best for seized muscles when you rub it in it heats up and penetrates the skin to loosen up the muscles,” she explained to him. “And that,” she pointed to the last present, "well you'll know what that is,” she told him and waited for him to open it.
He unwrapped the Sai and took one out to inspect it closer in the candle light. “Is this?” she nodded, “this is too much,” he told her.
“No take backs,” she said with a smile.
Neji thought for a moment, “Alright, when's your birthday?”
“What? No?” he raised an eyebrow at her, “Alright, November seventh, happy now?”
He carefully places the gifts on the table “Yes,” he said before lunging at her for a second time. She was ready for it this time and she pulled him down into a heated kiss. She ran her fingers through his long hair uncovering the seal as she went, while he descended upon her neck working his way up to nibble on her ear. She moaned his name as he did, failing to keep from arching against him. Unable to help himself, he began to make his way down to the top of her shirt, teasingly dipping his tongue beneath it
“Oh Gods,” she breathed and began pulling at his shirt, trying to take it off, he stopped long enough to do it for her, she took the time to remove her own. Hikari ran her hands across his newly exposed skin bringing their lips together once again, she brushed her fingers over one of his nipples, causing him to moan into the kiss.
Neji pulled back slightly to look into her eyes, “Are you sure?”
“I trust you Neji, trust me?”
“You'll tell me if you want me to stop?”
"Yes dammit, come here.” She pulled him down to her, he captured her lips in a bruising kiss. His hands roaming her chest freely, one hand caressing her breast through her bra while his mouth descended on the other. Hikari moaned loudly, she could feel the fire burning in the pit of her stomach spread throughout her body. He toyed teasingly along the edge of the thin piece of lace covering her breasts, silently begging for entry. She arched into his touch, her hands gripping his hips bringing them crashing into hers. They gasped together at the contact. Hikari reached behind her to undo her bra, When Neji felt it become slack he tore it off her and took a pert nipple into his mouth twirling his tongue around.
“N-neji,” she panted, “Don't stop,” and he didn't intend to, he was in heaven, he could feel her heat pressed against him as he ground into her, bringing them higher and higher. He could feel the pressure building up inside, Hikari was on fire ready to burnout of control. Neji slammed his mouth against hers swallowing her scream of pleasure as she climaxed against him sending him over the edge.
