No you certainly don't have to update just to be clear. Other than that, let's go to the chapter! ****************************************************************************************************************** “Good night, Naruto.” He said. Naruto waved in the distance before disappearing completely around a corner. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 7 Sasuke sat as his bandages were unwrapped. He had become accustomed to this daily routine now after his weeks here. Hinata sat behind him carefully tending to his wounds as her bulging belly pressed against his back. She had gotten quite large during his stay here. She had told him she was in her last month and each day she grew closer to finally having her first child. “Do you know what it is yet?” Sasuke suddenly said to break to the silence in the room. Jolting, not expecting Sasuke to speak up, Hinata smiled softly as her hands found their way to her belly. “L-lady Tsunade s-said it was going to be a b-boy.” She said quietly. “Have you two picked out a name for him?” He asked. Sasuke didn’t remember when he had become so talkative to anyone other than his brother. His shoulders relaxed as new bandages were wrapped around them. He supposed it was this place. It was nearly impossible to live here without being social. It was a thriving community that had its own pulse it seemed like sometimes. Back home, it felt like a calm lake on a windless day. Yet here, ripples formed and collided with each other constantly. Sasuke was having trouble keeping up. Finishing up, Hinata struggled to stand. “N-no. Kiba and I-I have tried, but h-haven’t found a good name yet.” Hinata replied finally able to stand up again. Collecting the dirty bandages, Sasuke handed them to Hinata who was grateful she didn’t have to bend over to get them. Bowing as low as she was able, Hinata took her leave shortly after. Sasuke sighed and shook his head. What was he doing? He asked about her baby’s name. When had he become so friendly with those beneath his status? He blamed Naruto and all the nonsense the dobe blonde had filled him with. Scowling, Sasuke went to the bed where his tattered shirt lay and paused seeing the torn fabric. He was supposed to be avenging his clan. Instead, he was asking about babies. His hand fisted at his side nearly shaking with its force. Anger bubbled up within him as he continued to stare at his shirt. Since his family’s murder he had done nothing but sit around here. What made matters worse was he had let himself relax. He had left himself do nothing. It was his duty to avenge his family. He was a soldier! He...had to do this for his honor! He had to. There was a knock at the door before it opened. Turning to glance at who dared enter his room, Sasuke’s eyes widened when he saw Naruto smiling sheepishly holding up a dark blue high collared shirt. “Sasuke, I thought that since your old shirt was falling apart, you could wear this one instead.” Naruto offered coming fully into the room. Sasuke glared and crossed his arms over his chest. Just last night they had talked about why Sasuke didn’t wear any of the shirts Naruto’s maids had offered him. Why would the dobe think he’d wear this one? “Hn. No.” Sasuke refused flatly. Going to turn to pick up his old shirt, Naruto’s arm shot out and stopped him suddenly. Looking back, Sasuke could see Naruto’s face had turned slightly red for some reason. Looking down for a moment, Naruto thrust the shirt into Sasuke’s hands almost roughly. “Please, just take it.” He said. “I know your family’s crest is important to you. So, just look at the back.” Naruto said, glancing upward hopefully. Furrowing his eyebrows in confusion, Sasuke flipped the shirt to look at its back. His gaze softened and instantly he knew what Naruto had meant. There, stitched across the back, was his clan’s crest proudly displayed. Lifting his bandaged hand, Sasuke caressed the fabric. His family’s crest wasn’t difficult to make, but he was amazed at how every detail appeared correct. His heart clenched at seeing it. He hadn’t worn something with the crest so large on it since he was a child. His eyes flickered to his old shirt. Its crest was tiny by the collar so as not to be overpowering but never forgotten. Glancing over to Naruto who stared at him with such a hopeful expression, Sasuke smirked as he saw his bandaged fingers and the dark circles under his eyes. The dobe must have spent the entire night trying to get it right. That same warmth that only appeared when Naruto was near began to spread within him. Taking the shirt in his hands, he carefully pulled it over his head. The action caused Naruto to grin broadly. Sasuke’s own lips upturned ever so slightly. It felt different, this shirt. Oddly, it didn’t feel as heavy as his old one like some weight had been lifted off him though he couldn’t understand why. “Are you hungry? Chouji prepared a picnic basket.” Naruto asked clearly excited to be going on a picnic. Rolling his eyes, Sasuke began to walk out of the room with Naruto. “Hn. Let’s bring Hinata along today.” Sasuke suggested, feeling suddenly nervous to be alone with Naruto. Naruto’s grin only widened. “Sure!” He said excitedly. Sasuke’s old shirt, torn and tattered from the bloodiest battle Sasuke had ever been apart of, lay forgotten on his bed as he limped down the hall with a prince of a foreign land that years before Sasuke’s birth his father tried to conquer. ~*~ They made their way through the forest that surrounded the village, weaving through the tall trees and thick shrubs that lay all around. The sun only shown through tiny patches where the leaves do not manage to reach. Sasuke stared all around, amazed at how large the forest truly was. It almost seemed like it never ended. “Like an island in the ocean.” Naruto suddenly said beside him. Sasuke looked back at him, confused by the random statement. Grinning, Naruto patted his shoulder. “Iruka used to tell me that that’s what my father had said about Konoha. The forest that surrounds us cuts us off from the rest of the world as if we were an island in the middle of a vast ocean.” Naruto shrugged his shoulders then as he moved off to help Hinata traverse over a log. “I always thought that it sounded kind of lonely like that.” He said as an after thought. Sasuke hadn’t thought of it like that before. The forest did cut Konoha cut off from the rest of the world. Only a few trails led into the village from what he remembered. And yet, Naruto kept himself informed on the world that was just outside his reach. He knew of affairs in countries that lay far beyond this forest and even the lands that lay just after. But Sasuke, he never worried himself over things of that nature. That was Itachi’s business. Itachi was going to be King one day and deal with other countries, not him. He was a soldier, would have been Itachi’s bodyguard one day or captain of the guard. He needed only his skill and his sword. And so, even though his own kingdom was close to others and had no physical barrier between them, he knew next to nothing of the neighboring kingdoms. He scowled suddenly feeling stupid. “A-are you all right Prince S-sasuke?” Hinata asked from ahead, leaning heavily against a tree for support. She looked worn out already. Naruto had already gone further into the forest to look for a place to set up their picnic. Sasuke looked up and nodded. He’d shrug it off until later. He couldn’t do anything about it now. “Hn.” He replied accordingly. He caught up to her and held out his hand for her to take on instinct. They began walking together after that, Sasuke limping while Hinata tried to manage with her pregnant waddle. “Thank you Hinata, for coming with us. I know this can’t be easy.” Sasuke found himself saying after a few moments of silence. Hinata looked at him surprised that he had spoken before a shy smile lit up her face. “O-oh no, it’s f-fine.” She said. Back at the castle after Naruto had given him his new shirt, Sasuke had sought out Hinata to ask her to accompany them on this outing. For some strange reason he didn’t want to be left alone with the other. Even the thought of it sent his pulse racing through his veins. And although Hinata was so close to her due date, she had accepted with only a bit of hesitance. So far the journey hadn’t been too hard for her it seemed, she would only stop momentarily and rest, bending over and touching her stomach only to be able to walk again in a few moment. “I w-wanted to help.” She commented. Sasuke stopped after she said that. That was right. From the very beginning, Hinata had been there offering a helping hand with his bandages and accepting him. She never treated him coldly or as if he was a foreign assassin in these lands. She treated him…like he was a friend although they had not known each other. “And thank you…for treating me kindly.” He added. He wasn’t usually one for giving thanks to others. But this, it just felt as if he had to do it. She had been so kind to him. She deserved nothing less. Blushing awkwardly at the thanks, her eyes diverted downward for a moment. “N-no thanks are needed Prince S-sasuke.” She replied. A pained look crossed her face as she bent down a bit further and touched her swollen belly. Sasuke furrowed his eyebrows together at the action. “Are you all right?” He asked, feeling suddenly suspicious about her behavior. Something seemed odd about it, but he couldn’t figure out why. She nodded, slowly standing straight up again. “I’m f-fine.” She answered softly. Still suspicious but accepting of her answer, he allowed her to take his hand and they continued to walk in the direction Naruto had been heading. They soon found a small clearing in the forest with a river that ran right through it. Naruto had deemed it a perfect place for their picnic and so they had set up and eaten with heavy conservation mostly consisting of Naruto joking around with Sasuke and trying to get a rise out of the other youth. Lying back on the river bank, Sasuke sat up on his elbows. He let his eyes fall on Naruto who at the moment was trying and failing to catch a fish. Hinata sat next to him staring at her prince with one hand on her belly as usual. Seeing Naruto suddenly holding up a large fish from the river and then promptly losing it and falling over, Sasuke shook his head and chuckled at the silliness of it. “Has he always been this way?” Sasuke asked, watching as Naruto scrambled to stand back up only to begin laughing at his own misfortune. Hinata’s soft smile faltered at the question. It didn’t go unnoticed by Sasuke. “N-no. He hasn’t been like this for a very long t-time. When he was a teenager h-he used to s-smile and laugh all the time. But when he b-became eligible for marriage…h-he stopped smiling and laughing.” She explained. Turning to look at Sasuke, Hinata’s small smile returned for but a moment. “I-I am truly grateful that you came Prince S-sasuke. Ever since you arrived, h-he’s returning to how he used to b-be. I-I can’t thank you enough for that.” Though she stuttered, she looked him straight in the eye while she told him this instead of looking down or away as usual. Sasuke was pinned by this gaze and the love and dedication that swam in her lilac eyes. The intensity of those emotions was nearly overwhelming. Sasuke glanced back to Naruto who was trudging out of the water fishless. He couldn’t help but wonder…why had Naruto changed when he had arrived? Whipping off his soaked shirt and ringing it out, he flung it at Sasuke. It hit right across Sasuke’s face. Naruto burst out laughing as it sloughed off Sasuke’s face only to reveal a scowl. “You damned dobe!” Sasuke shouted, jumping up from his seat and following after Naruto as he ran back into the water. “Catch me if you can teme!” Naruto yelled back, trudging through the water, splashing Sasuke behind him. Catching up to the other prince, Sasuke tackled Naruto into the water without a second thought of getting his bandages wet. He would take his vengeance out on the idiot. Hinata watched the entire scene unfold from her place on the river bank, amused by their antics. Suddenly she clenched her jaw and wrapped her arms around her middle feeling as pain shot through her abdomen. Just a little longer, she just had to last a little longer. By the time that Naruto and Sasuke emerged from the watery depths, Hinata was sitting back up with sweat above her brow but not looking too worse for wear. “Prince S-sasuke, we n-need to change your bandages.” Hinata said breathing a little heavier than before. Sitting in front of her, Sasuke peeled off his shirt and allowed her to dig into her bag and pull out fresh bandages for him. It didn’t take long for her to change them, having much practice at this point. However, as soon as the last bandage as been tied in place, Hinata’s hands paused and she doubled over in pain. Naruto jumped to her side to check to see if she was all right. Panting, she looked suddenly panicked. “Oh n-no. My w-water just broke.” She said, sitting up very slowly. Sasuke and Naruto’s eyes widened in shock. “Your water what?” Naruto asked obviously having no experience with pregnant women or labor. “The b-baby’s coming.” Hinata whispered clearly in pain as she suffered through another contraction. At that, Naruto was up and standing, ready to do just about anything he could to help his dear friend. “We-we have to get you to Granny.” He said, going to help her up when she shook her head. “N-no, I can’t walk.” She responded. Sasuke looked between the two not knowing what he should be doing. He had never seen a woman in labor or been around them for too long. “Then you can ride Kyuubi back. I can help you on.” Naruto suggested, offering any sort of help he could. She shook her head once more. “N-no, it’ll be too j-jarring. The baby’s c-coming too fast.” She explained. At the answer, Naruto became even more panicked than he already was. He could lead men into battle and run a country, but he didn’t know how to deliver a baby. Seeing that Naruto was obviously too panicked to do any good, Sasuke stepped in. He too didn’t know anything about child birth, but Hinata did and he could do as instructed. “Then what do we do?” Sasuke asked calmly. Hinata peered over to him, panting as sweat began to bead on her forehead. “W-we’ll need fresh water for when the b-baby comes and something to c-clean him off.” She told him. Taking their water pouch, Naruto filled it up quickly before he slid behind her, helping her sit up. He had sent Kyuubi back to the castle to bring help. Somehow Sasuke was tasked with being the one to actually deliver the child and was stuck in between her legs. Sasuke swallowed nervously and looked up at her. She looked just as nervous and frightened as they were. He steeled his resolve seeing as her eyes screwed shut as another contraction hit her. She had helped him and cared for him since his arrival in this strange land. She had never said an unkind word to him and was the only one besides Naruto that didn’t think he was an assassin. He’d help her through this and deliver her baby safely. This he swore to himself. “Hn. You will be fine. I promise.” He said to her deadly serious. She looked him straight in the eyes and nodded feeling the depth of his words. She’d be fine and her baby would too. And with that, she bore down and began the lengthy hard process of pushing. Hours passed and with one last push, a shrill cry pierced the forest. A new life had entered the world and Sasuke had been the one to deliver it. He looked down at the tiny crying baby in his hands unable to believe that he had helped in bringing this little baby boy into the world. “Sasuke, how is he?” Hinata asked through panting breathes as she tried to catch a glimpse of her newborn. “He’s fine. Here he is.” Sasuke answered as he carefully washed the baby off and wrapped her son in Naruto’s now dried shirt and put him in her awaiting arms. With sweat matting her hair all across her forehead, she smiled tiredly down at the bundle in her arms. A small tear rolled down her cheek as she stared at her newborn son. “He’s so beautiful.” She whispered. “Thank you so much. I couldn’t have done it without you both.” Hinata thanked them. Naruto beamed down at the baby and carefully touched his bald little head. “He’s so little.” Naruto said, his eyes twinkling with amazement as if he had never seen a baby before. “Careful, dobe.” Sasuke warned as he finally relaxed from the whole ordeal. Naruto looked back at him only to stick out his tongue before he turned his attention back to the baby. “Shut up teme.” Suddenly a bark was heard and Akamaru could be seen leaping through the tree line with Kiba on his back. He was off and at Hinata’s side in an instant. He didn’t say a word to her or their new child. All he did was wrap his arms around her and touch his forehead to hers. He was just happy that his wife and son were safe and healthy. They didn’t remain there for long, just until Hinata felt comfortable enough to sit on Akamaru’s back. After that, they traveled slowly back to the castle together. Once they stopped within the gates, other servants helped Hinata and the new baby down and ushered her into the castle to see Tsunade. Kiba remained behind for a moment, climbing down from Akamaru and walking over to Sasuke. He didn’t have the same cocky fun loving attitude about him now. He was far more serious. “Hinata told me about how you helped her. We are very grateful.” He paused for a moment, his hand coming to rub the back of his neck as he sighed. “And as a sign of our gratitude, we want you to give our son his name.” Kiba said, bowing low at the end finally giving Sasuke the respect of his birth right. “Prince Sasuke, I was wrong for not trusting you. I see now you are a good person.” He left after that before Sasuke could say anything back to the new father. Sasuke merely stood there in utter shock at what had just transpired. Shaking his head trying to put the whole mess behind him, Sasuke began to walk inside. He needed some rest. However, as he moved through the castle almost at every turn he was faced with a servant, knight, or nobleman bowing to him and thanking him and finally addressing him as Prince Sasuke or Prince Uchiha instead of blatantly ignoring him as they had before. Instead of welcoming the new found respect, Sasuke felt unnerved by it after so long of living here while this would have been the norm in his country. He found himself hurrying to his room so that he could finally be alone. Rushing into his room, swiftly closed the door and latched it in his near panic only to turn around to find Naruto sitting on his bed. He jumped at the sudden intruder and scowled. “What the hell are you doing here?” He demanded rather embarrassed that Naruto had scared him. The blonde laughed and laid back on the bed with a sigh of relief. “It’s been a pretty crazy day hasn’t it, teme.” Naruto said as he stretched out. Realizing that Naruto wasn’t going to move or answer his demand, Sasuke shook his head and headed over to sit next to the young prince. “Hn.” They sat in silence for a bit after that feeling as the day’s stressful events faded further into a memory. “So what are you going to name the baby?” Naruto suddenly asked. Sasuke held his head in his hands. He didn’t even want to think about that. Sasuke didn’t name anything let alone name people. He wouldn’t even know where to begin. “I don’t know. How did you even know about that anyway?” Sasuke asked, looking back at the very relaxed prince that was currently taking up nearly his entire bed. “Everyone knows. Nothing stays secret for long here. The servants know everything and tell everyone.” Naruto said, laughing. Sasuke carefully laid back on the bed, shoving Naruto over a bit to make enough room for him. “Your country gossips too much.” Sasuke commented idly causing Naruto to chuckle. Propping his head up on his hand, Naruto rolled over on his side to look at Sasuke. “Perhaps, but it makes them happy.” Naruto replied. “She didn’t stutter when she talked to me afterward.” Sasuke said thinking back to it. Naruto smiled. “That’s because she trusts you now. She doesn’t stutter when she talks to people she trusts. So, thought of a name yet?” Sasuke glared over at the other prince. “Since you asked me two second ago, no.” “Come on, what’s so hard. It’s just a name. If you really don’t know then think of someone you hold dear and name him after them.” Naruto suggested. Sasuke was quiet for a minute as he tried to come up with a name. It’d have to be a boy’s name and strong too. Yes, it had to be a good strong name for their son. Only one person came to mind when he thought of someone like that. His jaw clenched the more he thought back to him. Naruto didn’t miss the sudden change in Sasuke. “You know, it’s all right. It’s a good name for a boy.” Naruto reassured already knowing what name Sasuke would choose. Sasuke glanced over to Naruto and couldn’t help but stare at that smile that almost always was there. Somehow, Naruto could always make him feel better even if it was just a little bit. “So, that will be the child’s name then.” Sasuke said. “Itachi.” *************************************************************************************************************************************************** I really hoped you enjoyed the chapter.
