Thanks so much to my betas Midnight Essence and Moodysavage. This is it, the last chapter. I know it was short, but I’m like that sometimes. I hope everyone has enjoyed the story and will enjoy the end of it. Thank you to all that reviewed, I’m overwhelmed with the number of reviews I’ve received (it’s the most I’ve ever gotten), and I hope that if you enjoyed it you will let me know again. I always like knowing how my endings turn out for others, sometimes I’m to abrupt for some people, but for me, when the climax has hit, I like to wrap things up. Stories that drag have a way of losing my interest, and it’s reflected when I write. Now on with the finale!
Blugirlami21: I admit I was very upset by your review, and I never meant to say anything to make you angry or hurt you. I only wanted you to understand how hurt and upset I was. I accept your apology and I sincerely apologize if you were hurt by anything I said. I haven’t ever been the kind of person to point out anything I didn’t like about a fic before, and I doubt I ever will be. This is the first time I’ve ever felt like someone disliked my story so much that they felt they needed to tell me how bad it was. I know I’m not the best writer out there, though I don’t think I’m terrible, and what you said really did hurt me. I’ve been writing fanfiction for over ten years, and I’ve only just been brave enough to start posting. I’m not the kind of person to put myself out there, I don’t even post a fraction of the stories I write, and this situation made me question whether I should do it any more after I finish the ones I already have up. I’m not trying to heap that on you or blame you, I just wanted you to know that I am sensitive, and I don’t feel so anonymous on here that I’m not affected by what people tell me. I’ve written over a hundred Naruto fics and this is one of the few that I felt was good enough to be posted so maybe that will help you understand why I was so defensive. I welcome all positive and constructive reviews from everyone and I hold no grudge against you at all. I hope that you enjoy the end of this story and maybe you will give my other’s a chance as well, be it a story I’ve already written or one I post in the future. Thank you for telling me how you felt. Chapter 7 It was a gruesome scene, as men began to pour into the room. Doctors in expensive suits with fancy leather bag full of tools of the trade came in along with goons and a cleaning crew that looked just as scary as the goons. Itachi was on the floor a few feet away from his father with Sasuke kneeling beside him holding his hand. The doctors made quick work of patching them both up from what Naruto could see, and he thought vaguely that they would both live with this kind of immaculate care. Everything was being handled very quietly and discreetly. They were out of the room and on their way to a private hospital in what felt like mere moments. Naruto heard the sirens in the distance as they climbed into a black limousine, but he knew that they’d be too late to find anything. These men were efficient to the point of perfection, and there would be no evidence no matter how hard they searched. Later he found himself sitting in a recovery room next to Sasuke as he spoke quietly to a groggy but alive Itachi. Fugaku had survived as well, just as he’d thought, and though the situation was ugly, it would have to be dealt with later. There were guards at the door of both rooms and the nurses walked on eggshells around them as they gave care to each patient. It was all so surreal being in the middle of this scene. Shino was never far from him, but his presence was more of a comfort than anything so he made no complaints. Sasuke’s words drifted over to Naruto, and for a moment he felt like an outsider and wanted to leave. Sasuke’s hand snaked out though and took tight hold of his as if he’d sensed his discomfort so he relaxed again and let himself listen to his lover. “I never knew… I’m so sorry I was so hard on you. I think I always knew, I just didn’t want to see it, didn’t want to admit to myself that you weren’t just as bad as father. I love you Itachi. I promise I won’t leave you again.” Itachi laid there listening to his brother with a small but genuine smile on his face. It was something Naruto knew he never would have seen if it hadn’t been for all the drugs he was on. His voice was raspy as he tried to calm Sasuke down. “I know you do little brother. And I wasn’t much help either. It was easier to keep you safe if I kept you at a distance so it was mostly my fault since I didn’t make you listen to me. You need to rest. We’ll talk more when all of this is over, and I promise, father’s men will behave or they will answer to me. Go home with Naruto. We’ll see about getting you a new apartment in a few days.” Sasuke wanted to say more, but Shino was there pulling him away and leading them both out of the room and down to a car. Shino drove them to the apartment where Shikamaru was waiting. Naruto thought maybe someone had called him to let him know they were coming because he was fidgeting and looked relieved when they pulled up. He came down and opened the door before Shino could get around to it, and all four of them made their way inside without a word. Sasuke passed out almost immediately. He was far beyond the point of tired, and Naruto was right there with him. They slept like the dead and didn’t wake until long into the next day. Shikamaru was there when he woke with a breakfast of muffins and juice. He was so hungry though that it wasn’t nearly enough so Shikamaru brought him a bowl of ramen to fill him up. Sasuke groaned next to him and complained about the awful smell of ramen and how it should be a crime to eat it anywhere near him. Naruto just grinned and slurped loudly and enjoyed the sleepy glare Sasuke shot at him. Shino came in and talked quietly to Sasuke about his brother and his father. Everything was going well, Itachi’s shoulder wound would take some time to recover, but his father was far worse off with a chest wound. They’d saved his lung, but he’d be recovering for months. Shino also said that his mother was on her way which was not good at all according to Sasuke. “She’s the most amazing woman in the world, and the only person I’ve ever known that could deal with my father. I think things will be ok now, but we’re all in trouble. I’ve never been in her presence where I felt older than ten years old. Her first comment to me is always the same. She asks me why I can never seem to get my hair under control and then she offers to cut it like she did when I was a child. It’s very disorienting to feel like a naughty child. It always takes a few days for me to relax when I visit her. You will love her though, and she will adore you. Just don’t let her near you with a pair of scissors though; she’ll cut your hair.” Naruto was happy for the distraction. He’d been feeling more and more uncomfortable with all that had happened. He didn’t like to think about it. Sasuke was easy to focus on, but when they started talking about Itachi and Fugaku he felt his stomach lurch, and his heart would beat like he’d been running a marathon until he could think about something else. Shikamaru was making things easier for him. He didn’t talk about it, but it was obvious he knew. Kiba had gone to stay with Hinata so the apartment was quiet for the most part. Shino was sitting on the couch when he came out of the bedroom, and gave him a slight nod before directing his attention back to the laptop in his lap. When Mikoto arrived she hugged Shikamaru like she’d known him her whole life. Naruto was on the couch beside Shino reading a manga and hoping she wouldn’t notice him. Shino rose and let her hug him as well. His anxiety rose exponentially when she turned her gaze on him. Her eyes were knowing, and he understood then that she was the passion behind the power. She was just as formidable as her husband, and it was clear to him that she was who Itachi inherited his presence from. She moved in his direction with the kind of grace he’d though was impossible. Her sons couldn’t hold a candle to her, and even though she had to be at least fifty years old she was one of the most beautiful women Naruto had ever seen. He stood up, but didn’t move to her until she beckoned him to her. “I’ve heard so much about you Naruto. It pleases me to know you’ve made my Sasuke so happy. He has waited so very long for you to come into his life.” Her arms moved out to him as if she wanted him to hug her, but he was too afraid to take the invitation. She simply smiled at him and walked the rest of the way to him, pulling him to her. He was tall compared to her, her head just reaching his chin, but he felt so safe suddenly. She was a mother, and he’d never really had one before so he was completely overwhelmed with so much affection. He pulled away quickly and shuffled his feet, keeping his eyes on the floor to hide how odd he was feeling at enjoying a hug from a stranger. “I can see that no one has told you about me so I will explain why I am here. When I am physically near someone I can feel what they are feeling. Fugaku has avoided me for many weeks now because of this, and I am ashamed that I wasn’t able to intervene before this happened. It is not magic or some kind of power that I possess, I am just more open than most people. It is a valuable gift, and I am more grateful at this moment than I have been my whole life for having it.” Naruto looked up at her then and saw that she knew… somehow she could see straight into him and knew what he’d been thinking since he’d woken up in his own bed next to Sasuke. “I wasn’t going to do it…” “Yes you were, you just hadn’t talked yourself into it yet. We both know it, and I think it was fate that I was able to get here in time. You cannot run from this Naruto. You cannot hide from my son. Itachi has told me himself that he assigned a guard to keep you safe, but you must realize that he’s not just here to keep danger away. He’s here to ensure you don’t run, and he will. I have known Shino since the day he was born, and there is no better tracker in the world. Even if you manage to leave, he will find you and bring you back. That is what he does. There are those that would have been much more suitable for a guard position. Sending Shino was a statement, and I assure you Sasuke is well aware of it. “Itachi knows better than anyone how we seem to repeat our mistakes over and over. He knows you ran once, he told me where you came from. He is obviously making sure you don’t do it again.” She sighed and looked at him through sad eyes. A long moment passed and suddenly she seemed to wilt. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t convince you to stay. I did so want you to be my son.” Naruto felt warmth rush through him at those words. To have a mother like her had been a dream of his for so long, but it was too much. Everything was too much. She said out loud what he’d been thinking, and now it was real. Two men had shot each other right in front of him. They’d hidden it so well. They were powerful and dangerous men that were intimately involved in his lover’s life. They were his family. Mikoto moved closer to him again and kissed him lightly on the cheek. He felt a tear slid down when he closed his eyes, and admitted to himself that he deserved to grieve a little for what he was about to lose. She walked away from him then and Shino followed her into his bedroom to see Sasuke. Shikamaru was looking at him like he knew what was happening, but the conversation had been so quiet he was sure no one else had heard. He didn’t meet Shikamaru’s eyes when he pocketed his wallet, and mumbled he’d be back later as he was walking out the door. He didn’t look back. ooOOoo Kakashi answered the phone on the first ring. He was calm and casual as he agreed to send Naruto his last paycheck, Express Mail, to Oklahoma City. He asked if Naruto was ok, and when he would be coming back. Naruto evaded the questions easily with vague answers. Kakashi reassured him that his job would be waiting for him when he returned from his vacation, and hung up on Naruto before he could say he should hire someone else. Shino caught up with him at a rest stop outside of Dallas. He hadn’t said a word when he pulled open the door sat in the passenger seat of Naruto’s car, only pulled his glasses down and winked before injecting him in the thigh with something that made the world go black almost instantly. ooOOoo He woke up to the sun shining directly in his eyes, and his hands went immediately to shield them. He sat up and realized that he was on a bed in a room he didn’t recognize, but knew was much more expensive than he could ever afford. He’d been gone for a week. He hoped to get away and start again, but when Itachi walked through the door, his arm in a sling, he knew it would never happen. Mikoto had been right… “I’m glad to see you awake. You’ve been asleep for almost a whole day.” His tone was civil, but there was an undertone of steel that Naruto didn’t like. He didn’t say anything, just sat there looked back at Itachi with narrowed eyes and waited. “Aww, don’t be that way Little Naruto. You were told exactly what would happen if you ran. My mother is very insightful. I’m hoping that she was right about letting you go in the first place. Did you find what you were looking for?” Itachi’s eyes warmed at Naruto’s confusion. He had thought from nearly the beginning that Sasuke couldn’t have made a better choice. He just wished that they boy was a little less damaged. Naruto just sat there trying to think of something to say. He hadn’t been looking for anything so he didn’t think there was anything to find. Itachi sat down next to him and put his hand on Naruto’s shoulder. He assumed it was supposed to be comforting, but at the moment Naruto only felt more caged. “I understand that you might feel like a prisoner right now. I came to speak with you first so you would understand why I brought you back. Sasuke would just be irrational and that would just cause a fight. You’re overwhelmed by what you’ve seen and your mind is making up all kinds of ridiculous things, and clouding your judgment. My father has gone back home, and we have all come to an understanding. Sasuke is free of his family responsibility. Father will not interfere again. We talked… for a long time. There were things that needed to be said that we had all avoided for too long, and father agreed that he’d been irrational about it. Sasuke is just like him that way. Mother laughed when I said it. I love her laugh, so does father, and he couldn’t stay angry after that. “I do need to warn you though, Sasuke has nearly lost his mind wanting to go after you. He doesn’t know you’re here yet, and I don’t plan on telling him until you’re ready to see him. I will not hold you here after you’ve spoken to him. I cannot make you love him, though I think you already do, and I can’t make you stay with him. I’m not a bad person. Everything I do is done to protect the people I care about. I can be ruthless and vicious, but only when provoked. You have nothing to fear from me, and my life will not affect Sasuke’s in any way so you don’t have to worry about whatever fiction you’ve made up in your mind about us. We are normal people with normal lives. I have a wife and a son and friends that don’t sleep with semiautomatic weapons under their pillows. I can’t guarantee that something similar won’t happen again in the future, just like I can’t promise you won’t die in a car crash, but I will do everything in my power to keep the unsavory parts of my life out of his. You already have proof that I’m as good as my word. Just think about it before you make a decision.” Itachi waited for a moment before he stood and took slow steps toward the door. “How did you know where to find me?” Naruto asked in a rough voice. Itachi turned and smirked at him. “Didn’t you ever wonder why Sasuke would go to a coffee shop on the other side of town from where he lives and works? Kashi was our teacher when we were boys, and our guardian during college. Sasuke was in his sophomore year when Kakashi came to visit me. He saved my life but lost an eye. His sacrifice was noble and well rewarded. My father asked him what he wanted in return, and he asked for a coffee shop here in the city so he could stay close to us. Sasuke and I both visit him regularly, though I usually use the back door.” Naruto’s eyes were wide and glassy as he thought about how much sense that made. He only had one question left, “what kind of teacher was he?” Itachi’s face instantly changed from friendly to down right dangerous. “He taught us how to fight… and how to kill.” “Wait a minute!” Naruto said, as Itachi went to turn again. He stood up on shaky legs and tried to calm the angry pounding of his heart. “So that night when you called me all those things you already knew they weren’t true?” Itachi looked him up and down with intent appraisal before answering. “I knew all about you, from several different sources, but I always like to see the naked reaction to a direct challenge for myself. You need to understand… no I think you already do understand how important my brother is to me. I had to be sure.” Naruto took a deep breath and calmed immediately. He nodded, and Itachi calmly left the room this time. He sat back down and wondered how many people had made the mistake of trying to use Sasuke and paid for it in blood. He hoped he never knew. ooOOoo He waited a whole day before venturing beyond the door to his room. The halls were quiet, and the shuffle of his socked feet echoed loudly back to him as he explored the house. He saw Shikamaru leaning against the wall of what he assumed was the foyer with Shino leaning over him. It was a provocative pose, and Naruto wondered how long that had been going on. He snuck passed them to the other side of the house where he was hoping the kitchen would be. There were large windows on the back of the house when he found the kitchen, that looked out onto the lawn. There was a beautiful woman with black hair tied up in buns on each side of her head and wearing a pink kimono, and playing with a very small little boy that looked about two years old. The boy was swinging while the woman pushed, and Naruto assumed she was Itachi’s wife and that was his son. That meant he was in Itachi’s house, and he hoped he wasn’t doing anything wrong by sneaking around. He came fully into the kitchen to find Sasuke and Itachi eating and talking quietly. He hadn’t made a sound, but somehow both of them turned as if they knew he was there. Sasuke stood and just stared at him for a moment before turning and punching Itachi hard in the bicep. Itachi just laughed it off and went back to eating, and Sasuke practically leapt at Naruto, sweeping him up in his arms into a crushing hug. He let go just enough to kiss Naruto hard and possessively. Naruto fell into the kiss without thought. He’d already made up his mind to stay, he’d just needed time to work up the courage to face his mistake and any hurt it might have caused. Sasuke pushed him back suddenly, but didn’t let go of the tight grip he had on Naruto’s upper arms. He stared hard into Naruto’s eyes, and shook him as if he wanted to make completely sure he had Naruto’s attention. “Don’t you ever leave me like that again.” “I won’t.” “You had no right just disappearing like that.” “I know.” “You had everyone worried to death.” “I’m sorry.” Sasuke looked stunned for a moment as if he just realized what Naruto’s answers were to his demands. “What…” Naruto looked contrite, and that was all it took for Sasuke to forgive him. They spent the rest of the day talking about everything they could think of. Sasuke told Naruto everything about his family, and Naruto did the same. Naruto told him about his fears and insecurities about himself and why he’d left. Sasuke listened to every word wanting to make sure he didn’t make a mistake again that would lead to him losing Naruto. They fell asleep on the couch in the den while Itachi’s son watched educational shows on TV. ooOOoo They waited a week before going back to their normal lives. Sasuke found an apartment closer to Naruto’s and Itachi had taken care of everything else for the move. Naruto went back to living with Kiba and Shikamaru again, and really enjoyed the feeling of normalcy as he slipped back into his routine. He spent about half his time at Sasuke’s and half at home while he wasn’t at work. They ‘screwed like bunnies’ as Kiba called it, every chance they could and Naruto could honestly say that all the unwanted drama was gone. The only remnants that anything had actually happened showed in the regular presence of Shino when he was at work and when he was staying at home instead of Sasuke’s. Naruto was wiping down the counters when he heard the bell on the door ring. He looked up to see who it was and smiled at his best friend. Shino was sitting in the back of the shop reading a book when Shikamaru walked in, but put it down immediately. Naruto waved Shikamaru over and just as he got to the counter he looked back over to where Shino was sitting. The man pulled down his shades just long enough to send a sly wink at Shikamaru that made him blush furiously, and Naruto laughed out loud. Everything was going to be alright… he just knew it.
