An edgy silence between the two boys held their eyes locked, bodies motionless. Sasuke suddenly realized he was holding his breath. His loud gasp launched him into motion.
�Fuck this,� he said, more to himself than to Naruto. �I sure as hell don�t need this.� He rose from the bed and moved to the door. �It was a mistake for me to come here.�
Time slowed for both boys.
Naruto watched Sasuke move, helpless to move himself.

His hand on the doorknob, Sasuke paused. As turned his head, Naruto reacted without thinking. He quickly crossed the room to Sasuke and put his hand out to grab Sasuke�s fingers, still tightened around the knob, but stopped short of touching him.
Sasuke froze, scrutinizing Naruto�s face from the corner of his eyes. He deliberately held his breath, afraid his voice would betray his anxiety if he spoke.

Sasuke drew breath to answer. As he opened his mouth, Naruto quietly, decisively took Sasuke�s face between open palms and brought their lips together.
Tongues remained where they were; only their lips touched�a simple act, yet Sasuke�s nerves lit up like a match struck hard and fast. Sasuke, too, took a step backward. He looked quickly from side to side as if unsure where he was, then seemed to notice the door. He reached for the doorknob again, but this time Naruto�s hand came down firmly on his own, stopping him from opening the door. Sasuke jerked back at Naruto�s touch. His eyes flitted up to see Naruto�s face clouded with concern.
�Didn�t you hear me? I said I won�t hurt you. Please,� Naruto said, stepping toward Sasuke, �stay.�
Sasuke stood his ground, but leaned backward, away from Naruto as he approached. Naruto stopped only a step away from Sasuke, watching to see what he would do.
Each boy stood taut, hormones edging against nerves.
�I�m gonna kiss you again,� Naruto said, moving quite gently.
No, you can�t, Sasuke thought, unable to voice the words. He stood motionless as Naruto reached him.
Sasuke�s mouth was open slightly. As Naruto�s lips came close to his own, Sasuke felt his arms and legs begin to tremble from the strain of all that was happening.
He closed his eyes, waited.
But heated breath, not flesh, fell against his cheek.
Sasuke opened his eyes to see Naruto staring directly at him.
�Okay?� Naruto said.
Sasuke closed his eyes again.
