Chapter 7
Stinging came from the back of Hinata’s skull as it whacked against the wall. Dazed and confused, she tried to locate her attacker and brace herself for what might come.
A fuzzy figure appeared at her side. A heavy weight pressed into her chest as a forearm pushed against her, making it difficult to breath.
She grabbed at his arm, trying desperately to remove it and relieve the pressure, but still being careful not to scratch him. Fighting back would only make matters worse.
“Light…” she squeaked.
“Do not lie to me.” His voice was calm as he leaned into the curve of her neck, whispering into her ear, “Who?”
“I don’t know.” She clutched her eyes shut and turned her head away, trying to protect her face.
The hold loosened for a moment and she tried to stumble out of his reach. Just as spontaneously as he relieved the pressure, he reapplied it, quickly slamming his arm back into her and causing her to smack hard into the foyer wall.
“I said no lying. Let’s try this one more time. Who was the topless man in your truck?”
“Please…” She tugged at his arm depriving her of air. “Please let go.”
Once again the hold loosened, and she cautiously sucked in quick breaths.
“Who?”
She stared at him, trying to regain focus to her eyes. Slowly his face became clear along with the frightening detached look in his eyes.
“The man up the road… Sesshomaru,” she said defeatedly.
She collapsed to the ground as he released her.
“Sesshomaru?” His eyes lit up almost as if he was pleased with her confession. “How did this happen?”
Hinata pulled her knees into her chest and lowered her head, leaning against the wall for support. Trying to fight back both the tears and the overwhelming feeling of guilt.
“Hinata?” Her head shot up and she shuddered as he laid his hand on her shoulder. This time he was soft and gentle. The feel fraudulent touch made her stomach turn. “I need you to tell me what happened.”
She sniffled and wiped away invisible tears that she was sure must be there. “He was in the road. I don’t know what happened, just that he was bleeding. I just couldn’t leave him…” She trailed off as she throat began to sting, and the tears finally came. “I’m so sorry. Nothing happened, I swear. I just took him home.”
He wrapped an arm under hers and pulled her up. Quietly scolding her as they made their way to her bedroom. “You know I care about you. And I simply can’t have you going around putting yourself in danger. That’s why we have rules. And that’s why I must punish you if you break them. It only because I care so much.”
She shivered slighting at the word, “punish” and coward her head into his hard chest.
Light escorted her to the door before directing her to clean up before starting dinner.
Alone, she carefully walked on wobbly legs through her room and into her own small bathroom.
Staring at herself in the mirror, she wiped away the last of the tears, and splashed cool water against her face.
Why couldn’t she manage to follow the rules. All she wanted was to please him. If she could just keep from fucking up, then they could be happy.
*************************
Light flicked on the light to his study and strolled over to the desk, flipping open his laptop and turning it on before he sat, watching it boot up.
Sesshomaru, huh? He would have never have guessed the Hinata would have stumbled across such a scene. Well, at least he knew Gaara was finally declaring independence from Yakuza. All his years of planning were coming to fruition.
He had taken in and kept Hinata close for one reason, The Bakutos. He knew the girl was very dear to their leader Gaara, and if manipulated carefully, she was a perfect way to control the gang.
All he had to do was drop tidbits of info, details from the precinct, to Hinata and she would call Gaara to warn him. And of course Gaara would act accordingly. Light had been able to control the movements of the quickly growing, now very powerful gang through the genuine concerns of this young lady. The Bakutos had no idea what was really going on. It was all to easy.
He knew this little outburst from Gaara would be coming soon, but he hadn’t foreseen it happening when he wasn’t around to control it better. Oh well, too late for that. The best thing Light could do now is to make sure his connections in the Yakuzas are secured. He would need to be in control both sides in this impending war if it’s was going to go just as he planned.
Curiosity prinked at him. Light wasn’t sure who Gaara had sent or if they managed to survive. According to Hinata, Sesshomaru made it through the assault alive, but not unharmed judging from the condition the shirt was in.
He laid out the shirt still crumpled in his hand and inspected it closely. It contained slit on the left side, surround by a large blood stain, probably a knife wound. Also, spots ranging from small specs to nickel size covered it, suggesting a good beating had taken place.
Light snickered at the idea of a member of the famously powerful and smug Yakuzas being beaten half to death. God, he wish he could have seen it.
He grabbed the shirt and began to ball it to throw into the trash can when he heard a small ting sound. Something small had fallen onto his computer. A button? No, Light quickly found and retrieved the tiny microchip.
A villainess smile curled over his lips as he inspected it. Now what do we have here?
*************************
“Dude, seriously!” Naruto yelled loud enough to be heard through the hall, living room, and over a football game. “Kiiiibaaa!”
The TV silenced followed by footsteps, then the face of a very annoyed Kiba peaked into Gaara’s room.
“Whhhhaaaaaat?” Kiba whined, doing his best bitchy Naruto impression.
Kiba was so very kind and sweet when Naruto first came home yesterday, but that was before he had bombarded his self appointed caregiver with demands. The blond couldn’t help it, after spending the whole day asleep, he was full of energy and so bored.
“Come on, give me a beer, pleeeeeaaaasssse? Pretty please?” Naruto patted his big, bright blue eyes at the brunet with no avail.
“You’re on anti-biotics, you idiot. No alcohol, remember. Smoke some chronic.”
“No, it gives me the munchies and you pricks won’t let me have anything but fucking Jell-O, toast, and Jell-O covered toast. Mmm-mm, not.” Naruto kicked his feet against the sheets, looking much like a three year old throwing a fit. “At least give me a cigarette.”
“Will it get you to shut up?” Kiba put his hands on his hips, and gave the blond a squinted look, much like a mother scolding her child.
Naruto gave a big smile and tensed up, not moving a single muscle, doing his best to look behaved. “Sure will. Please?”
“Fine.” Kiba tossed his pack of Marlboros and a lighter on the bed, then retreated back to his game.
“Oh yeah,” Naruto squealed in glee as he pulled one stick from the pack and placed it between his lips.
He was getting ready to flick the lighter when a voice came from the doorway.
“I know you aren’t planning on smoking that vile thing in my bed.” Gaara grabbed the pack and plucked the one out of Naruto mouth, placing it back into the box. He walked across his small room and set them on the top shelf of his book case.
“Ahhhh, come on. That is so cold,” Naruto whimpered.
“Not in here. Do you know how hard it’s been to keep this room from smelling like those damned things.”
A smirk came to the blond’s face as he eyed Gaara. “No I don’t, just how hard has it been.”
“You’re an idiot. Good-night.” Gaara gabbed some clothes before making his ecsape, pulling the door semi-closed with him.
Damn, no one wanted to talk with him. Kiba and Gaara were already at their wits end and Ino was staying with a friend. Not that it would be cool for him to hang out with his friend’s woman anyways. That wouldn’t fly. Which left Naruto all alone, that is except for Sasuke.
Yeah right. Like Sasuke would come keep him company. Naruto hadn’t even seen him today. Come to think about it, he hadn’t seen the boy since helping him out of the car yesterday. Where did he go?
Well, now he had to know. Naruto slid open his phone and skillfully texted a message in a matter of seconds.
“U hre?”
A minute passed before his phone played the happy little tone that let him know there was an incoming message.
“Depends. Where are you?”
“Duh! Gs b rOm” he replied and waited for the music.
“Can’t say that I’m in Gaara’s bedroom.”
“gueS not U hom?” Still searching for an answer to his original question.
“Yes.”
“Whtcha doin” Now he knew he had reached new depths of boredom if he was trying to keep a conversation going with, Sasuke, The Wonder Ass.
“Texting you.”
“Lol… so fnE…” He rolled his eyes in annoyance.
“Stupid questions receive stupid answers.”
“Whtevr u r a tOl wan2tlk?”
As soon as Naruto hit the send button, he heard a light rapping on the door jamb.
“I can hear that damn thing from my bedroom.” Sasuke smirked as he opened his beeping phone, pressed a few buttons, then placed it back in his pocket.
“Hey,” was all Naruto got out before his phone played it’s jingle again.
New text, “Sure.”
****************
It was sometime in the middle of the night. Everyone had gone to sleep except for the two boys still merrily talking to each other.
The blond contently laid, propped up in the bed, while Sasuke had pulled a chair up to his side.
Naruto couldn’t believe he was actually having a good time with Sasuke. They had talked about everything from football to annoying pink haired girls, and found out they really did have quite a bit in common.
Sure Naruto still had been able to collect about three death looks, but that really was to be excepted. All and all, he had to admit that Sasuke wasn’t being too much of a dick.
“It’s getting late,” The Raven observed, checking his phone for the time.
“Yeah, I guess that means you’re leaving?” Naruto was surprised by how that sadden him a little.
“Soon.”
They sat in silence for a minute, having run out of things to talk about, or at least things not too personal.
Naruto broke the silence by asking the first question that was more then skin deep. “Sasuke, why are you here? And no, I don’t mean in this room. I mean, why did you join us.”
Sasuke sat quietly, looking sullen. It was the first time Naruto had ever seen the kid not know what to say, and it seemed like forever before he received a reply.
“You go first. Why are you here?” Sasuke went tight lip and stretch back. He wasn’t going to be the first to give up personal information.
The blond fought back the urge to respond with a ‘cause I live here answer’ followed by a ‘stupid questions get stupid answers’ speech. After which he took a second to think long and hard about the question.
“Gaara,” was the only reason he could think of that he was in this situation.
“Gaara? What about him? Oh!” Sasuke exclaimed before hushing to a whisper, “Are you guys like that?”
“Dude, you’re a hole. No, we’re not together.” Naruto reddened a little at that accusation and chucked his pillow at Sasuke, which he easily dodged.
Naruto wasn’t even sure if Gaara like guys, or even girls for that matter. He never got a straight answer from the redhead on what he was into. Though in all fairness, he hadn’t been very direct in his questioning.
“Gaara and I spent the first half of our lives together in the orphanage. We were both so weird and got teased lots. Me for being all kinds of loud and him for being creepy quiet. He would’ve stayed out of trouble for the most part if wasn’t for me. I was always getting into some kind of shit, whether it was with the nuns or the boys, and he always had my back. He sat through punishments and got beatings he never deserved, just so I didn’t have to go it alone. It was like that till I was eight and Jiraya came and adopted me. I didn’t see him for a long time.”
“So, how did you met back up?” Sasuke leaned forward, actually kind of looking interesting in this story.
“I used to cut grass at Angeles Rosedale Cemetery. I ran into him visiting a grave there, like two years back. I guess no one ever adopted him and he grew in foster homes and those messed up halfway houses. He met that girl he talks about every now and then, and her brother at one of those places. Not sure why they got alone so well, but they all ran off together and joined the Bakutos when they were like thirteen. He must’ve done something right cause he was running the joint when I met back up with him.”
“Her brother is the grave he went to the other day right?” The raven scratched at his bangs in frustration, searching for a name. “Neji, was it?”
“Yeah, that’s it. Never met either brother or sister. Guess the girl moved in with her boyfriend, The Cop, to the snobby part of town few years back.”
“Interesting, but from what you just told me, you left your adoptive parent’s house to move into the slums cause some kid was stupid enough to get beat up with you twelve years ago. That sounds pretty stupid to me.”
This time it was Naruto’s turn to shoot a death look. “You don’t get it. Me and Gaara, we got a bond. I won’t leave his side, and he won’t leave mine. Not ever.”
“Okay, sorry I asked.” Sasuke stood, still looking a little shocked to get such a dirty look from the normally friendly Naruto. “I am going to bed. You need to sleep too.”
“Yeah, sure.” The blond tried not to snap at Sasuke as he approached the door.
“Okay. Good-night,” he said before slipping out the door and down the hall.
The blond flipped over in bed, only slightly wincing at the pain in his shoulder. Time for sleep.
*******************
Naruto woke way to early to the sound of floorboards creaking and doors shutting. He checked his phone, 5:13am. No humans should be awake this early. Who in the hell was stomping around at this ungodly hour, and how in the hell does Gaara normally sleep through it.
Naruto push his pillow over his head, and tried to block out the sound. Doing his best to get back to sleep, he laid like this until could see the glow of dim lights bleeding through his eyelids.
“Sasuke?” Naruto questioned, thinking the boy had come back.
When no one responded, he pulled the pillow off his head and forced his eyes to open and face down the evil light flooding the room.
“Gaara?” Naruto pulled himself up to face his oldest friend standing in front of him. “What you doin’ up? Everything ok?”
“I am always up at this hour. And I just need socks.” Gaara broke their gaze and went to his dresser.
“Damn this early? Crazy. Socks, huh, that all? You could use some of mine if you want.”
“No, they smell.” Gaara grabbed a pair a perfectly white socks and sat on the edge of the bed to put them on.
“Hmph. I think that’s a bit of an exaggeration.” The blond nudge his friend with a foot, demanding attention.
“No, it’s not. They all stink.” Gaara turned around, met with the famous Naruto puppy face, and promptly turned back, facing the bookshelf.
“Naruto? I need to know something. Are you into Sasuke?”
“Into him? Like am I gay and want to have sex with him?”
“Yes, that’s the question.” Gaara’s voice was deathly calm and unwavering.
“Would in make a difference if I was?” Naruto wished he could see his friend’s face, wanting desperately to see any clues he might be missing.
“I supposed it wouldn’t.” The redhead stood, grabbed the cigarettes from the top shelf and tossed them back to Naruto. Turning at the doorway to warn, “Just don’t catch my bed on fire, alright?”
Naruto happily grabbed the smokes and shoved the pack under his pillow, just incase Gaara changed his mind.
“Hey Gaara.” He caught the redhead before he shut the door completely behind him. “Who are you into?”
“Now does that really matter?” Gaara asked through the cracked door, before shutting it and leaving the blond all alone.
“Yeah, it does to me,” Naruto answered to no one.
