Sunlight filtered through the treetops as the sun sank lower in the skies.
Sakura and Naruto were curled around Sasuke’s not quite lifeless form. Their chakra was dangerously low, with Sakura’s being all but gone. Neji noted with shock that kyuubi’s red chakra had faded and that Naruto’s own blue chakra was less electric, less alive. If he kept sustaining the three of them, it would be depleted completely and Sasuke would die, again. Sakura probably wouldn’t make it either and then…
“Hinata – go get Ino. Gather all the food you can. Soldier pills. Chakra enhancers. Take it all to Sasuke’s house. Tell Choji to meet us here. Do not talk to anyone else. Leave your jacket.”
Hinata looked for a moment like she was going to argue, but then she was gone in a blur, her lavender jacket fluttering to the ground behind her.
“I should have thought of that,” Shikamaru said flatly. He was on his back, staring at the clouds, but not really seeing them. For once, he didn’t have to slow his racing mind. It was as slow as Sasuke’s heartbeat.
“Self-pity is unbecoming. You cannot allow your guilt or grief to interfere with your responsibility to Konoha.”
“It wasn’t your plan, your kunai.”
“It was not your fault. There were too many variables to control them all. You could not have known that Naruto and Sakura would actually have sex. Or that it would trigger a kyuubi transformation in both of them.”
“What?!?”
“I did not wish to mention it with my cousin here. Sakura and Naruto did not follow your plan. Sakura chose to lose her virginity with just Naruto. That must have had a larger impact on Sasuke than you had anticipated.”
Suddenly, Shikamaru’s brain was on again, calculating.
“Man. That explains so much. Then that’s why…”
Neji nodded at the unfinished question.
“She should have told us. Explain everything, I have to record it.” And so they sat, next to the unconscious bodies of their friends and discussed what had happened.
“Were there tails formed?”
Neji closed his eyes and replayed the images. This time he forced himself to push away the shock and embarrassment at being witness to such an intimate act. He watched with both his eyes, and his byakugan. He watched Naruto and Sakura whispering, watched their chakra meld together, their still bodies adjusting to the sensation of being one entity. He watched as they found a rhythm, frantic and needy, listened as Naruto’s moans echoed hers.
Soon, the moans turned to fierce growls, and he watched as sharp nails scored marks down Naruto’s back, and the red chakra of kyuubi bubbled and healed the marks before they could even bleed. Neji’s pearl eyes snapped open.
“There were tails, at the end. It appears they both formed two tails.” He hadn’t processed the image because only a moment later, the two had stiffened, and then literally crashed through the glass window in their panic to get to Sasuke.
“If they can both form tails, does that mean that unleashing kyuubi’s true power will be twice as dangerous? What if Sasuke can also form tails when they are together?” Shikamaru’s mind spun with possibilities and calculations. He scrawled everything he could onto his scrolls for later thought and digestion.
“I am not sure those possibilities are worth the time right now. The red chakra is almost gone. And Naruto’s chakra, is it almost as pale as Sakura’s normally is. If we do not get them back to the house and force them to eat…” Neji knew Shikamaru was already calculating the new risks.
Suddenly, the ground trembled softly around them.
“Choji. Took you long enough.” Shikamaru didn’t have to look up at his long time friend to know that he had indeed come as fast as he could. “When you catch your breath, I need you to do your Bubun Baika no Jutsu, your partial expansion, and carry these three home.” He waved in the general direction of the unconscious Hokage and his partners. “We can’t separate them at all, or they will most likely die.”
Choji barely batted an eye at their naked forms. He still wasn’t exactly sure what the jutsu they had performed was, but he trusted in Shikamaru, and so he did not ask questions. If Shikamaru wanted to give him answers, he would.
Very carefully, the three shinobi wrapped Hinata’s coat around Sakura, and then Neji’s hakama around Naruto, because they would not be moving so quickly, and no one in the village really needed to see their naked, helpless champions. Choji had improved massively since their genin days, but because of the delicacy of the situation, he decided that it would be best to take the Hōrengan, the Spinach pill, to make sure he had the reserves to make it all the way back to their home, without breaking the jutsu.
He wrapped them in his expanded hands, and took off at the fastest pace he could manage without jostling his precious cargo. Of course, Shikamaru had chosen one of the most secluded training grounds, and one of the ones furthest away from the home that Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke shared. It had been a prominent part of his plan that morning, but it was not helpful in the early evening when they were traveling back. There was the more straightforward route that Sakura and Naruto had traversed, naked, in their hurry to get to Sasuke – and it was a relief that no one who could even begin to see them at those speeds had been around. Then there was the slightly more roundabout way that Shikamaru had brought Sasuke, so Neji could watch how the tails fluctuated with each arc in their path. And then there was this way – the more, shall we say, scenic route. They avoided all main roads, all homes, all fields where there might possibly be someone working or training.
They could not afford to let anyone know that their Hokage was unconscious, and so near death. Many people in the village had latched onto Naruto, despite the demon, because of the smile and the energy he brought to everything, and after the attacks, the constant rebuilding, the constant fear and uncertainty, they needed that. Many had protested his appointment by the council, hell, the council had protested their appointment of him as Hokage. But they needed him all the same – even the villagers who still had the courage to protest his leadership, even they needed him. To lose their leader, again… The leaf might not really recover, not again.
Shikamaru snapped out of his thought process when he heard a twig snap nearby. He pulled his kunai, throwing it in the direction of the sound, whirling around to alight at a full stop on a branch, second kunai already in hand.
“Hinata-chan said nothing. So how did I know? She is not so easily flustered these days, and she looked to be nearly in a panic. Only Naruto can still cause that reaction in her. My insects could not feel his chakra, so I searched instead, for yours.” Shino stood still, watching Shikamaru. “I am only disappointed that, once again, my ability to help in a crisis situation was overlooked.” Shino eyed the mass of bodies in Choji’s expanded arms. His insects had already ascertained the delicate situation they were in.
“We were responding to the crisis as it came. Once we get them stabilized, we will need your help. But, since you are here, you can help us check for chakra signatures on the way to the house, and Neji can monitor their levels more closely.”
Most of the journey was uneventful and slow. Once Shino directed them around a clearing where some Academy students were practicing taijutsu and throwing kunai at targets. One stopped and watched the woods as they trod past, sensing that there was something amongst the trees. Shino sent some insects closer to the boy to observe. ‘A chunin shouldn’t have been able to detect us this far back in the woods, much less an Academy student. Perhaps the child is a genius, or maybe he is a threat. I will remember the boy’s scent and investigate the matter later.’ Shino thought, and left his bugs to watch the boy for a few more minutes. After their group passed the clearing where the students trained, the young boy appeared to shrug off the feeling and ran back over to join the target practice.
When the Namikaze estate was within sight, Neji and Shikamaru raced ahead to prepare the home, while Choji and Shino continued at their slower pace, protecting their precious cargo.
When Shikamaru entered the kitchen, he saw a basket of soldier pills, several bags of food, and a note from Hinata indicating that she and Ino would return with more food as quickly as possible. Neji, meanwhile, cleaned up the few shards of glass that had managed to fall inside the window, and changed the sheets, not knowing how many days it might take for the situation to either improve enough for them to get up, or bad enough to not matter.
Shikamaru met Choji at the front door, and led him to the great bedroom. When the three had been placed on the bed, he looked around, noticing first the broken window, second the sleeping mats on the floor. He stared at them for a moment, slowly realizing what it meant, and then bolted from the room.
“He can handle it,” Shikamaru answered Neji’s cold stare. “He needs time to adjust to the situation. We all do.”
“I can see their chakra with my eyes, but my cousin has also trained with medical-jutsu. Perhaps she can see something we cannot.”
Shikamaru merely nodded, knowing it was not easy for the Hyuuga prodigy to admit that his own byakugan was not enough. He left Neji in the bedroom, and went in search of Choji.
“They need calories,” he said, when he found his friend in the kitchen. “Sasuke can’t eat, I’m not even sure he is really alive. They used all of their chakra to get his heart started. Sakura has almost no chakra of her own left. Naruto’s is fading, and even kyuubi’s is all but gone.” Choji sat at the table, staring at the food left on the counter. “It won’t be enough. Even the soldier pills with chakra enhancers won’t be enough. If Naruto’s chakra fades much more, we will lose them all. We need the Akimichi clan’s knowledge.”
“You want to use our Three-Colored pills on them?” Choji shook his head. “It’s too dangerous. These pills could kill me, much less someone who doesn't have fat reserves. It is against clan law.”
“The Chili pill is the most dangerous, the Curry pill too, but the Spinach pill shouldn’t kill him. If we feed him soldier pills beforehand, calorie dense foods, then that lowest level pill should just get his chakra levels back up, long enough for us to do something. We have to try something Choji.” Shikamaru leaned back against the counter. “I’m not even sure we can wake him to feed him anything, but I have to consider all of the options. And I need your support.”
“You’ve always had it.” Ino struggled into the kitchen laden with food bags, followed closely by Hinata. “We trust your judgment. Don’t we Choji?” Her voice left no room for argument. She did not wait to see if he would attempt to argue, and instead, cheerfully changed the subject.
“We got all of the pre-made soldier pills we could without raising suspicion. We have ingredients for more, including some chakra enhancing herbs from our greenhouse, and enough food to feed the rest of us for at least tonight. Maybe you should ask Sonomi-san to cook for us, eh, Choji?”
The room fell silent, as everyone turned to look at Choji, who had managed to turn a shade of red that only Hinata could normally manage.
“Sonomi-san? Is that one of your cousins, Choji-san?” Hinata was genuinely curious, and jumped at Ino’s barks of laughter.
“Sonomi-san’s father owns a soba shop. She always gives Choji extra helpings. And, she has been to the Akimichi compound to cook dinner for you. Twice. Right, Choji-chan?” She laughed as Choji sputtered out words of denial. “She is very pretty. And a good cook. She is a good match for you Choji.” Ino turned back to the bags of groceries, and began putting them away. “Sakura-chan taught me to make the soldier pills she makes for Naruto. Start with the ones we have and I’ll make a batch.”
The moment of laughter passed, but it was enough to calm everyone’s nerves. Ino set a pot to boil, and began chopping the necessary vegetables and herbs that should refuel Naturo’s spent chakra reserves.
