Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: I’m so sorry this is so late in update. RL sucks right now. Anyway, on one of my other stories I got an
anonymous review which is prompting this little note.
First let me say that I love my readers and reviewers. Everything you say in a review touches my
heart. And those of you who make the
hits on my story go up without reviewing, I love you too.
Second, I write stories for myself. That’s why even this story, which was written
for the wonderful Nejislady who never fails to review when she reads a chapter,
is written for me and not for anyone else.
Writing is a form of catharsis for me.
I write because I want to and because the story is in my head. I don’t care if you like or hate it. I like it and I write it.
Third, if you’re going to leave a negative review, feel
free. However a single sentence like ‘you
don’t know how to write guys’ isn’t very helpful for me. If you feel the need to flame, which that
wasn’t really much of one, go for it, but I will just laugh at you. If you have legitimate criticism, give me
examples. You know, I’m not a guy. I don’t think like a guy. I don’t act like a guy.
Lastly, if you’re going to make a smart ass remark, at least
have the balls to put your name to it.
If I thought someone was writing a terrible story and I felt like
reviewing (bringing up the whole other tangent that I could go off on: I’m not
MAKING you read my story) I’d put my name to it. I’d probably just stop reading though, if it
wasn’t something I was enjoying. Someone
worked hard on their piece of art and they don’t need to be ripped apart by people.
Without further ado (reviews at the end):
Chapter Seven
Gaara glared at Hinata.
He really didn’t care about any of the idiots on the floor, but he kept
picturing what she had to have done to Neji.
He sighed and glanced back to Kotetsu.
If he was good today, tomorrow he’d be dropped down to medium-risk. He sighed and bit his cheek to keep from
yelling at Hinata about what a stupid bitch she was. Name calling was apparently bad for the
recovery process, or so he’d been told the last time he had done so. It was Naruto’s fault he would resort to such
childish actions, but still he wouldn’t change the way Naruto had changed him. If someone hurt Naruto; they hurt Gaara.
Hinata was shamelessly flirting with Kotetsu again, and it
was taking every ounce of Gaara’s willpower not to hurt her. Kotetsu saw Gaara fighting with his
self-control and turned to address the boy.
“So, Gaara, are you excited about your transfer to the medium-risk
floor?”
Gaara shrugged. “I
don’t know if excited is the right way to put it. I’m happy that there won’t be restrictions on
my visitors anymore. I want Naruto to
visit me more. He’s going through a
rough patch, and we cheer each other up.”
Kotetsu frowned. “I
don’t know if it’s a good idea for you to seek out someone having their own
rough patch.”
Gaara smiled, an action which always seemed so foreign upon
his face that people often took his smiles as malice rather than
amusement. “I know, but this is
something that everyone has seen coming for some time. Apparently his father is gay. His mother knew this when she married the
man, but has suddenly decided to move out.
She said something about his old crush being painfully obvious to
everyone around them now, even dense-but-lovable Naruto.”
Gaara smirked as Kotetsu swallowed. “And with your voices? Have you had any progress?”
Gaara shrugged. “I’m
not hearing them, though my meds haven’t been adjusted either. I finished this semester early, with another
4.0. I’d say things are going well for
me.”
Kotetsu nodded. “Can
I speak with you later, about something that has no place in group therapy?”
Gaara smirked and nodded once. He sat
back and closed his eyes while listening to the rest of the group go through
their weeks. As much as he hated to
admit it, it seemed like group therapy actually did accomplish something. He got to get things off his chest, like why
he didn’t like his floor mates, and no one could hold it against him. He opened his eyes to see Shizune looking at
him with affection. He knew she thought
of him as a little brother, even though they’d only been together for a total
of one month. He nodded almost imperceptibly
at her.
Kotetsu didn’t miss the small interaction and felt happy for
it. He knew that Gaara’s dedication to
keeping his life normal was inspirational to Shizune. She all ready told him that the next patient
that came up to the high-risk floor was getting a version of Gaara’s story as
inspiration. He sighed as he listened to
Deidara talk about all the sex he thought about having, but refrained from
having. The man had raped his best
friend because of his addiction, and was admitted because he couldn’t control
himself. “Thanks, Deidara, for that
information.” He sighed again. “Time is up for today. I’ll see most of you next week.”
Gaara remained seated and kept his tongue in cheek even as
Hinata turned to her nurse and frowned.
“I can’t see Ko for a whole week now?
That seems like torture.”
Iruka frowned and motioned Hinata toward her room. “I know, but tomorrow is a big day for
us. Your family is coming to visit. We should get you back so you can rest.”
Hinata smiled sweetly. “That sounds
great, ‘Ruka. I might need some help
falling asleep though. I’m really worked
up after listening to Deidara. I have no
outlet here.”
Gaara managed to hold back the laughter he felt when Iruka
rolled his eyes at Hinata and just pushed her toward her room gently. He turned his eyes toward Kotetsu when
everyone else had gone. “You want to
know about ‘Zumo, don’t you?”
Kotetsu couldn’t help the blush. His eyes drifted to Shizune, who was
smirking. Interacting with patients
about their personal lives was frowned upon, but he knew this once she would
forgive him. She knew he’d been crushing
after the man since they were in high school, and he had never found anyone
else because they never measured up to his unfortunately straight best
friend. “Maybe a little. Why is Tsu leaving him now?”
Gaara smiled softly.
He really had grown attached to Kotetsu in this time. Even if Naruto didn’t happen to be directly
involved in the situation, he might do something to help Ko. “I told you.
She said he was even more in love with his high school crush now more
than ever.” Gaara decided to take pity
on his doctor, “He’s coming with Naruto tomorrow to see me on the medium-risk
floor. They’ll be in around 2, if you
want to accidentally drop by. Even Naruto
told me you’re the old high school crush.
He found some note you wrote his dad in his yearbook about a sexy ass
and a flagpole.” Gaara shrugged. “Sounds embarrassing.”
Kotetsu paled a second before flushing violently. “It was.”
He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Do you think Naruto would mind? His parents are splitting up.”
Gaara frowned. “You
know as well as I do that they aren’t his parents. He only really feels a connection to Izumo
anyway. He just wants his dad happy.”
Shizune frowned.
“Well this is done now. You know
what to do, Ko.” She smiled and put her
hand on the obviously upset man’s shoulder.
“You know you want him and you’ve just found out he wants you. Take the chance, okay?” She held her hand out to Gaara, not offended
in the least when he didn’t accept her assistance to rise. She rolled her eyes at Gaara. “Could you have been any blunter?”
Gaara smirked, “What?
I was only doing anything because it will make Naruto happy.”
The next morning Gaara woke with butterflies in his
stomach. Today was the day he was moving
ahead in his treatment and Naruto was coming.
He quickly woke and dressed for the day.
He was waiting on his bed when Shizune and Jiraiya came in with his bag
of belongings. Jiraiya smiled. “I guess you were ready for this, huh?”
Gaara nodded. “I’m
looking forward to seeing Naruto.”
Jiraiya smiled. “Well
then, let’s go get you situated and introduce you to Tsunade. She’s the floor doc on Medium, just like I’ve
got the high risk and Kakashi’s got low risk.”
Gaara stood and couldn’t help the surprise on his face when
Shizune hugged him. “I’ll miss you. I’ll come and visit once in a while,
okay?”
Gaara nodded. He followed
Jiraiya down the stairs where they went toward the staff offices. Jiraiya knocked on one of the doors before a
“go away; I’m busy” was shouted out at them.
Jiraiya snickered. “Tsunade, if
this is busy with a patient I’ll wait, otherwise I’m coming in.”
Gaara followed behind as Jiraiya pushed the door open and
stepped into the office. Gaara saw the
busty blonde and sighed. She didn’t look
so much like a therapist, but he supposed neither did Jiraiya. Jiraiya sat down in front of her desk and
grinned at her. “Come on, Tsunade. You know you want to give me some loving!”
Tsunade glared at Jiraiya.
“Yeah right, old man.” She turned
her attention to Gaara. “I’ve read your
case file and talked to Jiraiya. It
seems that you are well on your way to recovery. You’ll most likely be on this floor for a few
months before we move you down to low-risk.
Once you’ve made it there, it will be up to Kakashi to give you the
clearance to leave. As you know you can
have as many visitors as you like on this floor. You’ll be allowed private visitation, but it
must be in a public spot.”
Gaara nodded. “Naruto
will be here soon; may I be shown to my room?”
Tsunade smirked and nodded.
“Thank you, Jiraiya, but I can take it from here.” She stood and brushed past the men still
seated. She motioned for Gaara to follow
her. As they were walking down the
corridor, Tsunade saw Shikamaru. “Good
morning, Shikamaru.”
Shikamaru’s eyes were calculating as he saw Tsunade with the
red head Sasuke had shown interest in.
“Eh, troublesome,” he sighed as he continued toward the mess hall. He’d be sure to meet the red head later. He needed something to eat right now.
Tsunade smiled again and motioned Gaara into a room on his
right. “This is your room. Shikamaru, who we just passed, will be next
door to you for a few weeks.”
Gaara nodded. “He’s
not a permanent resident of this floor is he?
I seem to recall him from my walks before.”
Tsunade nodded.
“Anyway, if you need something, you can either ask Shikamaru or head to
the commons area and get any nurse there.
I’m going to leave you on your own now.
When your visitors show up, someone will come to get you.”
Gaara nodded. “Thank
you. I think I’m just going to watch
some TV for now.” He headed out to the
commons area and sat next to some people who he wasn’t interested in getting to
know. Gaara turned his head to side
slightly as the elevator doors opened.
He smiled a bit when he saw his best friend and his dad headed toward
him.
Naruto bounced over, leaving his dad on his own. “Gaara!
I’m so happy that you got moved down here. Dad says I can come over every single day and
help you with your homework and well I guess you’ll be helping me, but still;
isn’t it great?”
Gaara nodded before turning his attention to his
principle. “Did you let him get into the
cappuccino again?”
Izumo shrugged. “I
didn’t mean to?” He smiled at
Gaara. He’d become well acquainted with
young man as both principle and father figure.
He knew there was nothing but good in Gaara, but that he was dealing
with some dark demons. “So, can you give
us a tour?”
Gaara smirked. “Sure,
but not a very big one. We have to stay
in a public area.” He waved his arm in
the general direction of the common area behind him. “This is where we can entertain ourselves if
we want some company, otherwise we can just sit in our rooms.” He smirked.
“End tour.”
Izumo chuckled.
“Still easily amused, I see,” Kotetsu whispered behind him.
Izumo spun around quickly, blushing despite his best effort
not to. “Ko, I didn’t know you were
working here. I mean, I knew you said that
you were working here, but I didn’t know you knew Gaara.” He chuckled nervously as he faced his crush.
Kotetsu was so going to owe Gaara for this. He smiled at Izumo. “Why don’t I give you full tour? Naruto and Gaara can join if they like.”
Gaara smirked at Naruto; his eyes were full of
mischief. “That’s okay, Ko. Naruto and I will just hang out up
here…though you could come get us if you go to the courtyard.”
**********************
Pein sighed as he sat in the infirmary. He was getting a check up on the broken nose
Sasuke had given him. He glared at the
wall. It was all so unfair. He had been hit enough in his life. He’d been a weird kid, as far as the rich
kids he’d grown up with were concerned, so he tried to hang out with people who
had less money than him. They hadn’t
liked him because he had money. It had
resulted in him being beaten more than once.
It wasn’t even that he had any actual problems that kept him
here. For him, it was being in a place
where it seemed like people accepted him.
He’d met Konan in here. He’d met
Shikamaru in here. He really thought he
was making friends, but after Sasuke punched him, he wasn’t so sure. Had he really done anything so bad? He said he’d fuck Sasuke, but he meant
that. Was it that Sasuke and Shikamaru
really were fucking and they didn’t share?
Why wasn’t he special enough to join them if they were?
He sighed. Tsunade of
the medium-risk floor was also the general nurse for the institute. He was waiting for her for a while now, but
she could never be trusted to show up on time.
He frowned as the door opened.
“You’re late.”
Tsunade shook her head.
“You were rude to a fellow patient, what’s the difference?”
Pein glared at her.
“Why isn’t Sasuke getting punished for this at all? I told you who did it to me.”
Tsunade shrugged. “We
have no way of knowing for certain. He’s
not going to admit to it, you know, and no one saw the altercation.”
Pein frowned. “You
know, he’s not the only one with problems.
And how the hell was I supposed to know there was something wrong with
Shikamaru? I don’t understand why Sasuke
wants that lazy ass faker for a boyfriend.”
Tsunade rolled her eyes as she examined the boy’s nose. “It looks fine. Come back next week at the same time. I’ll let everyone who needs to know, know.” She looked up from her paperwork. “You wanna
talk about it?”
Pein sighed and turned away from her. “There’s nothing to talk about. I’m just spoiled.”
Tsunade rolled her eyes.
“Right. You’re free to go then.”
Pein sighed and walked back to the commons area. He glared at Sasuke who was sitting by the
window reading a book again. It didn’t
seem like there was anything wrong with Sasuke either. There was no way he was anything but a
spoiled brat. He’d just hang out all day. At least the rest of them had the decency to
flip out once in a while. And to make
matters worse, Sasuke was getting a day pass to go out with Shikamaru’s family
the following week, just because he checked on a friend.
Pein made his way to Konan.
He sat down next to her and sighed.
“What’s wrong, baby?” She asked.
Pein shook his head.
“I hate feeling like no one really cares about me and that I might never
have a real connection. What we have is
real isn’t it? If one of us made it out,
the other would still be there, right?”
Konan smiled. “Of
course, honey.” She leaned over and
slapped her lips against his, wetly. “What’s
got you so upset?”
Pein sighed. “I just
always feel like I’m being tolerated more than liked. I never could be friends with the other rich
kids because I liked punk music, piercings, and anarchy. Those things just weren’t tolerated in my
dad’s social circle, so I tried making friends with the kids who were poor. They didn’t want to be friends with me
because I had money. Sometimes I was
beaten when they’d see me hanging on the edges of either group. It’s not a big deal, really. I’m just kind of selfish and want people to
like me.”
Konan sighed and wrapped her arms around Pein’s neck. “Is that why you’ve been such an ass to
Shikamaru and Sasuke? Because they don’t
let you into their group?”
Pein shrugged. “Is it
too much to want to have that kind of friendship? I thought if they could be so caring toward
one another they could be to me too, but no.
No one is allowed between them. I
just don’t understand. What makes those
fuckers so special?” He shot another
glare at Sasuke. “I always resorted
violence against others because that was how they treated me. Being an ass was supposed to be a way to keep
myself from getting hurt.”
He sighed and leaned against his girlfriend. “Did I ever tell you what the final straw was
for my coming here?” Konan shook her
head. “I was an ass to my dad and then
beat the shit out of one of his friend’s sons for calling me a fag. I really let my anger get out of control.”
Konan smiled. “It
doesn’t matter to me. Look, Pein, I’ve
got news that probably won’t make you so happy right now, but I’m getting out
next week.”
Pein smiled sadly.
“I’m not happy you’re leaving, but I am happy you’re getting out.” He kissed her neck lightly. “Will you come visit me?”
Konan nodded. “Whenever
I get the chance, I’ll check in on you.
I’ll visit once a week for sure.”
Pein nodded. “If you
don’t, I won’t hold it against you. I’ve
never really had a connection; I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if this were
the same. I’ll love you just the same.”
**************************
Gaara was sitting on the couch and laughing like he used to
with Naruto. If they weren’t surrounded
by others, he would have assumed they were at Naruto’s again. He smiled at the blond. “So, you get the courage to ask out Neji
yet?”
Naruto blushed before frowning and shaking his head. “I did just get put into his group for the
final project in Novel though.” He smiled. “I guess we’re going to write our own short
story. There are 3 of us in our group
and we’re each writing 4 pages.”
Gaara smirked. As
much as he hated his voices and felt unloved was as much as he loved to fix
other people up with the people who would make them happy. “You should invite Neji over to work on your
paper and drop the fact that I’m gay to see how he reacts.”
Naruto’s eyes widened comically. “You determined your sexuality?” His friend had always maintained that he was
asexual because he wasn’t worth loving or being loved. Naruto knew better, however, when Gaara would
spare a glance at an attractive man now and then.
Gaara shook his head.
“I’m just saying you could do that to test the waters of Neji’s
gayness.” Gaara frowned. “I really hate her you know, his cousin. She is one of the coldest people I’ve ever
met, and that’s coming from me.” He
sighed and pushed the depressing thoughts from his mind as Jiraiya instructed
him to. He wasn’t supposed to dwell on
them without a doctor or nurse present to help him talk his way through
them. He smirked. “You should ask Neji to work with you
though. Will you do that for me?”
Naruto smiled almost blindingly. “Of course, Gaara!” He jumped up when he felt hands on his
shoulders and spun around to see his dad and Kotetsu standing behind them. “Don’t do that to me, old man!”
Gaara smirked. “You
shouldn’t be so easily distracted. I
knew they were there.” He nodded at the older
men. “Courtyard?”
Kotetsu nodded. Gaara
stood and took Naruto by the arm, leading him down toward the stairwell to the
courtyard. He was excited to show Naruto
around there. It really was pretty. As they stepped outside, Gaara held a hand up
to shield his eyes from the sun. A frown
marred his face for a moment before returning to its normal impassiveness as
Gaara saw the dark haired boy under the oak tree. That boy was always under the oak tree.
Naruto didn’t miss the look and smirked. He nudged Gaara’s shoulder. “So, made any friends yet?” He purposely let the question hang vague and
with no indication he’d seen the look given to the boy under the tree.
Gaara turned back to Naruto with a small sigh. “I was stuck with people crazier than
me. So in answer to your question, no;
not yet.”
******
Sasuke peeked from over the edge of his book at the red
headed boy. He seemed to be a little
less crazy these days, but just as hot.
Sasuke watched as he walked the courtyard with his blonde friend. He sighed.
His dad was coming today, and he really needed to talk about some
things. He only hoped he wouldn’t clam
up when the time came.
“Sasuke,” his father’s voice pulled him from the contemplation
of the attractive boy.
Sasuke looked up to see his father standing before him,
looking prim as ever. Sasuke sighed and
pushed up from the ground. “We need to
talk,” he said as he led the way toward the tables set aside for visitation.
Review Responses:
Ero Sennin: You are my sunshine in a dark world. Shikamaru and Sasuke really had to get past
the whole ‘am I attracted to you or aren’t I?’ thing they had going on. It was going to strain their relationship and
just hurt Shikamaru more otherwise, and they both realized it.
Lady Laran: Thank you so much for the review. I’m glad that the slow plot is something you
like. I like plot just as much as I like
smut.
Sneakyfox: I wish Shikamaru’s plan was that brilliant. In fact *whispers* don’t tell anyone, but
Tsunade’s going to shoot him down… *looks around to see if anyone else heard
that*
Nejislady: I’m glad you didn’t miss any either. I hate catching up on stories I miss. Shika and Chouji, I have something so cute in
mind for them… so long as my muse doesn’t change her mind on me. As far as the toothpaste, they didn’t want
patients eating it. Sasuke’s dinner with
Shikamaru’s family is in the next chapter.
So is his talk with his dad. I’m
not certain if I’m doing more with Pein’s background than what was in this
chapter. I have been toying with a
flashback or two, but my muse hasn’t made that final decision yet.
