Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: So, here we are on the sixth chapter. I don’t think there are many left to this story. I have a few things that still have to happen, and I have no idea how long it will take to get to them. Also, you never know when some new thought will insist that you pay attention to it and make it part of the story. If I could draw for crap, there’d be pictures to go with this stuff for you guys; as it is, I can draw some stick people. :)
To the reviewers: Honestly, if I can make one person feel bad for Sasuke, mission accomplished…at least for this story. I’m glad that it is still being enjoyed and that you find the energy to comment as much to me. If you notice something you view as a mistake, don’t hesitate to point it out to me. As I said in a past story, I write (most of the time) with 3 kids 4 and under bouncing around the same room as I am in. Sometimes I miss things.
Chapter Six – Hangovers and Mysteries
Sasuke groaned as he pulled the blankets over his head. Why the fuck did he drink so much last night? Where the fuck was he? Why the fuck wasn’t someone answering the fucking door? He groaned as he sat up, slowly blinking away the sleep and recognizing the pounding in his head for the massive hangover it was. Damn it; someone open the fucking door.
He flopped back into bed and sighed. He wanted to yell, but only managed a weak whine when he heard his bedroom window opening. “Fucking go away.”
He heard Itachi’s soft laugh. “You never could hold your liquor.” He heard shuffling feet and pulled the blankets over his head. He could hear his bathroom door being open and cupboards being rifled through. After a few moments he heard some water being run in the kitchen. When his bedroom door closed again, he pulled the blankets off his face. “When did you move all this shit in if you just got the apartment two days ago?”
Sasuke groaned as he forced himself to a sitting position, taking the aspirin and water from Itachi. After swallowing the pills and drinking the water, Sasuke cracked an eye to glance at Itachi. “Naruto helped me yesterday before the party. I kind of took a bunch of money out of the family account and bought the furniture. Naruto’s moving in tomorrow so we can split rent.”
Itachi smiled. “At least you stuck it to dad before you told him off. He can’t contest the money you spent before he disowned you.” He sighed as Sasuke closed his eyes again. “Sleep an hour or two more. When you get up, I’ll make you some breakfast.”
Sasuke slid back down in bed, yanking the covers back over his head, and mumbling something about never drinking again. Itachi shook his head and tucked his brother back in more comfortably. He went to the living room and turned on the new large screen TV while waiting for Sasuke to wake up again.
After catching a movie, Itachi stood up and went to Sasuke’s kitchen. He smirked a little when he saw Naruto’s ramen stash in the pantry. Shaking his head, he made some dry toast and tea. Sasuke’s stomach wouldn’t really be feeling up to more. He stifled his laughter and maintained a look of boredom as he heard Sasuke fall out of his bed, then the sound of feet running to the bathroom, and retching as the toilet seat was thrown against the tank.
A few minutes later, Sasuke drug his body to the couch and tossed an arm over his eyes. He groaned as Itachi set the food and drink down in front of him. “Sasuke, eat it. I know you don’t want to, but you’ll feel better. Drink the tea. It’s the same thing.” Sasuke growled, but still managed to force the food down.
When he finished his tea he glared at Itachi. “What is it?” He grimaced at the sound of his own harsh voice. He sighed. “Sorry.”
Itachi shook his head, keeping his amusement hidden to a slight smirk. “Don’t worry.” He reached into his pocket and tossed Sasuke a small book. “That’s what I wanted to give you.”
Sasuke turned the book over a few times before opening it. It was a ledger for a bank account. “What’s this?”
Itachi smirked. “I thought you were a fucking genius.” He cocked an eyebrow as Sasuke scowled. “It’s an account I set up for you in your name. I decided that when and if you stood up to our father, I’d let you know about the account.”
Sasuke sighed and glared at the book. “I don’t need your charity. I wanted to get out from under your shadow, not be in your debt.”
Itachi growled. “Damn it, Sasuke. Just shut up for five minutes.” He ran a hand through his hair to calm himself. Sasuke could push his buttons just right, but he supposed that was the point of a little brother. “I can see you. I always could see you. I could see you destroying yourself worrying about what our parents thought. They may not have noticed when you raided the liquor cabinet, but I did. They may not have noticed that you are poised to rank just as quickly as I did, but I noticed. Sasuke, you’re my little brother. I’ve always cared for you more than you’ve ever realized.”
Itachi flopped back against the couch, suddenly feeling drained. “I’m glad you had the strength to stand up to him. I’m glad you had the strength to tell him your sexual orientation. Unfortunately I never got the courage to tell him that. Now I’m stuck in a loveless relationship. On the surface, we’ll be the ‘perfect couple’ but she’s got a boyfriend and so do I. That being information you are to keep to yourself.”
Sasuke nodded. “What’s your boyfriend’s name?”
Itachi snickered at the question that seemed so left-field of all the questions that could have been asked. “Genma.” Itachi glanced at the clock on Sasuke’s wall. “Look, Sasuke, it’s all ready 3. I have to get going. I have a meeting to get to, a lover to go to, and then a fiancé to visit. The balance in that account should last you the rest of your life, if you spend wisely and put some of your mission money into savings. I’ll see you next week sometime.”
Sasuke smiled softly and nodded to his brother as he left the apartment. Sasuke sighed. He was still feeling the effects of the hangover, but not quite as much as before. He closed his eyes and laid back against the extremely comfortable couch. Naruto was planning on coming back later tonight; he’d make sure Sasuke was still alive.
***********
Shikamaru shifted as the sun came in through his bedroom window. It always came too early for him. He would have liked to have taken the window out of his room, but there was no way his mom would allow for that. Plus, it would make cloud watching without leaving the house much more difficult. He groaned and tried to turn over only to find his arm stuck beneath a nice, warm weight. He smiled, remembering Neji spent the night. His smile grew even larger remembering that they’d finally kissed at the dance.
Shikamaru gently pulled his arm from under Neji. He’d just toss a blanket over the window so he could go back to sleep, still hold Neji, and not be assaulted by the bright sunlight. As he was draping the blanket over the window there was a soft knock at his door. “Shikamaru?” His father quietly asked.
Shikamaru dragged himself to his door. He groaned as he pulled the door open. “It’s too damn early, old man.”
Shikaku smirked at his son. “Well, it’s 10 AM for one, so it’s not early. Also, I wanted to let you know that Neji’s uncle is looking for him.” Shikaku laughed at the pitiful look on Shikamaru’s face. “Let him know will you? And have him help you move the TV back before he leaves.”
Shikamaru nodded and closed the door. “Damn,” he muttered under his breath.
Neji laughed. He’d been awake since before Shikamaru woke up, but he’d just been content lying with his eyes closed, held tight to his new boyfriend. He wanted to wait until Shikamaru blocked out the sun and then snuggle back into the warm body. Shikamaru glared at Neji. Neji laughed again, “You picked that up from Sasuke. He’d be proud.”
Shikamaru sighed and rolled his eyes. “Get your Hyuuga ass out of my bed. You heard my dad.” Shikamaru plopped back into his bed beside Neji, wrapping the older boy in his arms. “Never mind. You can’t leave. You’re too comfy.”
Neji smirked and put his head on Shikamaru’s chest. “You know I’ve got to go. Hiashi gets pissy if I don’t listen to him. Besides, I’m a proper Hyuuga, however much you have tainted me, lazy Nara.”
Shikamaru groaned, but smiled softly. He pulled Neji close and gave him a tender kiss before pushing his boyfriend off the bed. “You come back later, and I promise to be alive.”
Neji sighed from the floor. “Like I’d turn you down even if you didn’t give me those kisses I’ve so quickly become addicted to. If I can’t make it back tonight, I’ll send you a message.”
Shikamaru pulled the blankets back over his head and wrapped his arms around Neji’s pillow, hugging it close to his body. He sighed contentedly and slipped back into welcome slumber. When he rose nearly three hours later, he was smiling happily. He slowly made his way out of bed and into the shower. After an hour getting ready, he went down to see his parents. Neji hadn’t returned yet.
Shikaku laughed at his son. “So, that was quiet the show you put on last night.”
Shikamaru blushed. “Tch, troublesome old man.” Shikamaru ducked the predictable blow coming from his mother behind him and smiled. “Stop trying that one, Mom. It doesn’t work.”
Yoshino sighed. “You know I don’t care that you’re gay, but do you really have to get involved in situations that make you the center of attention?” She smiled. “For someone who thinks everything is troublesome, you certainly get yourself in enough situations that make everyone sit up and pay attention.”
Shikaku smiled at his wife. “Come here, woman. Leave the boy alone.” Yoshino smacked her husband’s head, but smiled softly. “Neji’s good for you Shikamaru. Don’t screw it up, all right?”
Shikamaru sighed. “I don’t think that’s possible, Dad. I do love him.” At his mom’s look of ‘uh-huh’ he rolled his eyes. “Think about how close we were before this. Do you really think I can’t love him all ready?”
Yoshino shook her head. “Nope, that’s not it at all. I just don’t think you’re over Sasuke enough to be in love.”
Shikamaru shrugged, being saved by the door. “I’ll get it.” He stood up and walked to the door, all ready recognizing Neji. He opened the door and pulled his boyfriend close to his body. “My troublesome family would like us to move the TV back, since we didn’t do that before you left.”
Neji laughed. “Love you too?”
**********
Naruto cracked the door to the apartment open slowly. He wasn’t sure how Sasuke would be feeling. It was almost 8 in the evening, so Sasuke should be fine. That didn’t mean he was though. Naruto hadn’t even left until almost 10 AM just to be sure that Sasuke didn’t die in his sleep. He really should have been watching his friend’s alcohol intake more.
Sasuke sighed from the couch. “It’s safe, dobe. I’m not hung over any more.” He smirked when Naruto came closer to the couch. “Don’t let me drink like that again, or I’m going to have to kill you.”
Naruto nodded. “I ran into Shikamaru and Neji earlier. They were getting some barbeque with Chouji and Shino, so I thought I’d tag along.” He held out the bag with the food he brought home. “Picked you up something, and got a juicy piece of information for you. Well, a couple pieces of information for you.”
Sasuke sat up and took the bag of food from Naruto. “What kind of information? I really don’t care whether or not Sakura or Ino broke a nail.” He sighed into his food. His day has been such a waste, short of talking to Itachi.
Naruto smirked. “Well first, Sakura and Ino really feel bad. They even apologized to Shikamaru just like they promised to do.” He laughed when Sasuke’s face broke out into a self-satisfied smirk. “Anyway, I heard there’s someone in town that thinks they might be able to like you. It’s not who you might think though.”
Sasuke quirked a brow. “Another fan-boy or fan-girl? I think they were the reason I was drinking so much last night.”
Naruto shook his head. “All I’m going to say is that it’s not someone you would expect, and it’s a he, and I like him a lot.”
Sasuke sighed. “You’re not going to tell me who it is though, are you?” Naruto shook his head. Sasuke rolled his eyes. “You’re so childish.”
Naruto laughed. “I also learned that Hinata had a crush on me. Apparently I’ve been missing that one for a few years now.” Sasuke smirked. Everyone had seen that crush except for Naruto. “You bastard! You knew that, too, and you never told me?” He sighed dramatically before returning to the topic at hand. “I had to let her down easy. It’s not that I don’t like her, but as you well know, my sexual preference is the same as yours. It turns out that Kiba likes her though, and he asked her out. She said yes.”
Sasuke smiled a little. “That ought to be interesting.” Naruto nodded, letting Sasuke eat a little. Sasuke looked at the eager expression on Naruto’s face. “What else then?”
Naruto grinned broadly, “Someone has a crush on me that I might return.” Sasuke waved his hands, indicating Naruto to continue. “I think I’m going to ask him out.” He paused for a second, making sure Sasuke was still interested in his story. “Shino.”
Sasuke’s jaw dropped for just a moment. He’d met all of Shikamaru’s friends, since they respected Shikamaru enough to keep their relationship secret, even if they didn’t respect Sasuke. He liked Shino, though he never would have thought the silent bug tamer would have ever thought about dating Naruto. Sasuke smiled a sincere smile. “If he makes you happy, you should do it.” He paused. “Can I have a hint about the person who likes me?”
“I can tell you he’s a friend of Itachi’s. That’s about all I can tell you though.” Naruto smirked seeing Sasuke obviously trying to figure out which of Itachi’s friends would also be friends with Naruto. Deciding to change the subject Naruto giggled. “I can’t believe you thought Iruka was a chick. I mean you were so fucking pissed at Kakashi-sensei.”
Sasuke seemed confused. “I don’t remember that. I thought Iruka was a girl?” He tried to recall that part of the night, but just about everything after Itachi was a blur. He shrugged. “I drank a lot last night. I guess it’s not entirely surprising I lost part of the night.”
Naruto stretched and took the empty food containers from Sasuke. “Yeah, well, Shikamaru made me promise so many times not to let you do that. I can’t believe I did. I guess I was a little trashed myself, but nowhere near where you were. I had to drag your ass home.”
Sasuke smirked. “I hope that all you did to my ass, dobe.” Naruto let out a hearty laugh. Sasuke sighed. “Itachi dropped by to give me something today.” He grabbed the ledger that had been shoved inside a drawer in the kitchen and handed it to Naruto. Naruto’s eyes were huge and questioning when he handed it back to Sasuke. “Apparently all Itachi ever wanted was for me to stand up for my father. This is Itachi’s own money and he gave it to me. I want to share it with you.” He held his hand up as Naruto started to protest. “You are my best friend. I may be a complete ass most of the time, but knowing how hard growing up was for you… Just let me do this for you, alright?”
Naruto nodded, seeing the serious expression on Sasuke’s face. “You know I’m proud of you right? For doing the right thing for Shikamaru, I mean.” Sasuke nodded, a small pinch in his heart at Shikamaru’s name. He meant it though. He would not give in to his Uchiha possessiveness. He knew Neji would make Shikamaru happy, and Shikamaru happy was the thing he wanted most. Naruto smiled at Sasuke. “So, since we pimped this place on your dad’s money, what are we spending Itachi’s money on?” He wanted to lighten the mood.
Sasuke smirked. “I thought you’d never ask.” Naruto gulped. The devious look on Sasuke’s face usually spelled something that involved a lot of pain on Naruto’s end. However, when Sasuke pulled him close and whispered what he’d had in mind, Naruto burst out into a huge smile.
A/N: I’ve seen what’s in store for Shino and Naruto…but I’m not giving it away. Also, I know who Sasuke’s secret admirer is. Neji’s a little OOC in this story, especially when he’s around Shikamaru, but seriously I’m a different person around my best friend than I am around my other friends. I don’t know why these guys wouldn’t be that way. I know Itachi’s pairing is a little off, but damn it! I like off. :)
