Chapter Seven
Training was a good way to distract herself. Suzaki enjoyed being able to become immersed in movement, forgetting this morning. Though granted, her mind would continue to return to this morning and its events. Luckily, she was good at fighting those thoughts off.
The problems started when the rest of her team joined up with her. At first it was all business; they trained together, keeping themselves out of danger, pulling punches and avoiding direct hits. But then her sensei stopped the training and directly brought up the subject she’d been dreading.
“Kazekage-sama sought me out this morning,” he told her, getting questioning looks from Minami and Airou. “He told me something very interesting about the rainstorm last night.”
She bit her lip unintentionally. “And?” was all she could say.
“Suzaki,” Masumata all but snapped, “Kazekage-sama told me that you can control rain. You never mentioned anything about which element you were drawn to. Can you, or can you not, make it rain?”
She didn’t really want to answer that, but she supposed she had to. She drew in a breath, knowing it would just be problematic to keep things from the team. “I can keep the rain going,” she answered. “I can’t ‘make’ rain. It’s very difficult. And I’m sorry for keeping it secret, but I wasn’t so sure I would ever accomplish it. I figured it would be better to keep it a secret, then mention it if it succeeds, rather than tell you only to have it fail.”
“Makes sense,” Minami agreed.
“You can really do that?” Airou asked her, surprised.
“Only for a little while,” Suzaki admitted.
“And how long have you been working at it?” Masumata intervened.
She shrugged. “I think, a little over four months.”
“Four months?” Minami all but shrieked. “And you can control rain?!”
“That’s not --” Suzaki started.
“That’s amazing!” Airou yelled. “How did you do it?”
“Stop it now,” Masumata snapped at both Minami and Airou. To Suzaki, he went on, “Explain to us how it works, if you would.”
“Well. . .” She had enough trouble trying to make it work; she had never tried to put it into words. But she attempted to explain anyway. She collected chakra in her hands, pooling it there, then spreading it wide and thin as wires. She knew it was something puppet-masters used, and had studied that a bit to figure it out. Then she made a kind of web out of the chakra, reaching mainly up into the clouds -- maybe a little higher. Then she just had to sort of magnetize it, drawing rain. Like how water acted on actual wires, it would gather, then fall.
And depending on how strongly magnetized her chakra was, it would gather faster, fall faster. The wider and more intricate the web was, the more it exhausted her. Before, she had only trained near streams, or under small clouds. It was interesting to watch water droplets lift from the surface of the water, only to gather on chakra and fall right back in the stream again.
In the rainstorm, she saw a perfect opportunity to test it on a bigger scale. Though she didn’t have a name for the jutsu yet, she had discovered which seals to use already. For such a large web, she had to alter the seals to release more chakra, and to her complete surprise, it had worked flawlessly. But being able to do it once didn’t mean she’d be able to again. It was likely only thanks to Gaara finding her that she didn’t pass out from the exertion, and then the movie afterwards that allowed her chakra to begin replenishing.
She kept that last bit from her explanation, saying instead that she relaxed for a few hours, then went to bed. Now she was recovered, at least on a physical extent. Her chakra still hasn’t returned completely yet, though that didn’t surprise her at all.
It was right as she finished her explanation and instead began answering her teammates’ specific questions that they were interrupted. Suzaki recognized the woman intruding upon them as Temari -- a pregnant Temari, at that. Barely showing, she was probably in her first trimester.
Being the sister of the Kazekage meant that everyone was respectful of her, no one asking about the fact that she was pregnant yet wasn’t giving answers as to whom the father was. Rumors went around that he wasn’t from this village, since no one was stepping up to claim responsibility, and even more rumors went about that Kankuro and Gaara -- her brothers -- knew all the details.
“Excuse me,” Temari greeted. “Shirou Suzaki-san?”
Suzaki faced her and bowed, as did everyone else. “Yes?” she answered.
“Please forgive me,” Temari said to Masumata, “but I need to borrow your student. Suzaki-san, could you come with me?”
“Of course,” Suzaki replied with a nod. Giving her teammates a helpless shrug, she went with Temari. Along the way, she asked what Temari wanted with her.
Smiling at her, Temari said, “I was asked to talk with you. From what I hear, there’s something going on with you and my little brother.”
Suzaki wondered, only briefly, if Temari meant Kankuro or Gaara. But then, that was a stupid question. She had no connections to Kankuro, other than knowing who he was. She gave a sheepish smile. “Yeah?”
Temari’s smile widened. “Are you really in love with him?”
Suzaki bit her lip again. “I’d rather not talk about it on the street.”
“There’s an idea,” Temari laughed. “Come on, we’ll go to my place and talk.”
Suzaki nodded. She had never seen Temari’s home, at least not knowingly. As they reached the place, she recognized the outside, but had no idea this was Temari’s house. The interior, she noted amusingly, was nearly equivalent to Gaara’s. To her surprise, Temari was a lot more hospitable than she’d been led to believe.
Suzaki had always heard of Temari being tough, brash, rough around the edges, maybe even bossy; never really sweet or considering. That’s why, when she was told to sit, she expected Temari to sit down too, yet the elder woman went straight for the kitchen. A few minutes later (after a series of questions concerning tea and snacks) Temari returned with a tray that she set on the table.
“So,” Temari started, sitting beside Suzaki, “is it a better setting to answer my question yet?”
Suzaki wanted to, but another query was nagging at her. “Well, if you answer my question first,” she offered.
Temari raised a brow. “You have something to ask me? Go ahead.”
Temari was probably thinking that Suzaki would ask about her baby, but Suzaki wasn’t going to try and barge into her life like that. She’d always figured that a mother’s lover and children were up to her to talk about. “Why is your house so much like Gaara’s?”
Temari had a shocked expression, though Suzaki wasn’t sure why. “For one,” Temari answered, “apparently you don’t know this, but our engineers and designers aren’t too diverse. A lot of homes look like this. For two, we did live together when we were young. It wasn’t until our father realized just how dangerous Gaara could be that he separated us, taking Kankuro and I away from that house.”
“So that house had always been Gaara’s?” Suzaki finished. Somehow, she was surprised.
“Yes. Now I have a question for you,” Temari told, voice booking no argument. “You didn’t say ‘Kazekage,’ you said ‘Gaara.’ Get what I mean?”
Suzaki bit her lip. “He asked me to call him by his name when he isn’t working.”
“I see.” Temari paused, likely gathering her thoughts, then went on. “So, are you really in love with him?”
She glanced away. “Y-yes.”
“Do you have any idea how many times I’ve heard that?”
Surprised, she looked up sharply at Temari. “I guess.”
“I need to know,” Temari was saying, “how serious you are. I’ve seen so many girls say they love him, heard so many more claim they’ve been loved by him. And from what I hear now, he’s more into you than any girl before.”
Suzaki sat still, stunned silent. “Are you. . .sure about that?” she asked, not quite believing it.
Temari didn’t reply, giving her a measuring look. She was awaiting an answer.
So Suzaki tried to explain. “Yes, I love him. I’m very serious about it. It’s always been a point of conflict for me, now more than ever.”
Temari interrupted there. “A point of conflict?” she echoed.
“Y. . .yes,” Suzaki answered, nodding. “My parents are firm believers of him being a monster, even now, when we all know that’s not so. In my memories, my parents never once claimed that -- until they saw me talking to him as young children. So they’ve always tried to keep us as far apart as possible. I’ve defied them enough by choosing to be a ninja, and now leaving their home. I haven’t spoken to them since I left. . .” This last was an epiphany for her, surprised at herself for ignoring her parents so completely.
“And now?” Temari prodded.
Suzaki didn’t want to answer that. But, being Gaara’s sister, she figured Temari had a right to know. “Now,” she sighed, “hell, I don’t know. I guess you would call it passion or desire. It’s so hard to keep my hands off of him.”
Temari smiled then. “Apparently he’s feeling the same thing. So, go on.”
She shrugged. “What else is there to say? Everything’s pleasant when he’s around. But then. . .” She paused, unsure of how to say it. “I guess it started the first time he kissed me, but now, every time we’re close enough to touch. . . It’s maddening to try to resist him, but I already promised myself I wouldn’t do. . .certain things, no matter what.”
“Meaning you don’t want to be one of his one night girls?”
Shocked, Suzaki stared at Temari. Then, after a few moments, she gave a laugh. Of course Temari would understand; they were both in the same boat, so to speak. “Considering you understand,” she started, “I’m guessing you’re really in love, too.”
Temari’s smile resembled a much younger girl’s. “Yes. I get it. You want all of him, not just one night.”
Suzaki nodded again. “I guess it means I love him a bit too much. ‘Just one night’ would only make it hurt, wouldn’t it? It’s not worth it.”
“That proves how serious you are,” Temari agreed. “No woman who’s truly in love would settle for one day. All of those others girls naturally thought they were in love, but it’s very different when you really are.”
Suzaki was glad Temari understood her so well. “So,” she whispered, leaning closer, “one thing I’ve been dying to know about you. . .”
Temari’s smile turned mischievous, and she leaned closer as well. “What is it, Suzaki-chan?”
“Who’s the lucky guy?”
“Hmm, should I really tell. . ?” Temari started, looking thoughtful.
“You know mine,” Suzaki offered.
“That’s true,” Temari laughed. “Alright, I’ll tell. But only a little. The rumors are right; he’s not from around here. And yes, before you ask, Gaara and Kankuro both know who he is. They even, er, shook him down, from what he told me.” She frowned. “All these years they never acted like brothers to me, then suddenly I’m pregnant and they go crazy.”
Suzaki giggled. “I’m an only child, so I wouldn’t know what that’s like.”
“Well, if something big happens between you and Gaara, who knows, maybe Kankuro would act like a big brother to you.”
Suzaki blushed, deeply. Sitting up straight, she waved her hands frantically. “Wait, wait, wait! Are you suggesting. . ? Cause that’s. . . I mean it’s too. . .” She shook her head sharply, unwilling to finish any of the thoughts she started.
Temari laughed then, hard. And as she kept going, Suzaki felt herself start to giggle, too. Temari had been teasing her, she realized. They both ended up curled into little balls, holding their stomachs from laughing so hard; Temari a bit less of a ball, conscious of her womb.
Later, as they were cleaning up, having talked about a rather wide range of things, Suzaki finally got up the courage to ask the older woman a question that had been nagging at her. “Temari,” she said, “what are you going to do with all the information I gave you?”
“Me?” Temari replied, pointing at herself. “I’m probably going to talk to Kankuro about it.”
“What? Why?” Suzaki snapped, despite herself. She didn’t know Kankuro, didn’t trust him enough to let him know some of her deepest feelings.
Temari laughed. “That’s because I talked to you, and Kankuro talked to Gaara. Besides, the two of us are the elder siblings, and we want what’s best for Gaara, you know.” Turning to face Suzaki, she finished, “And I really believe you’re what’s best for him.”
Suzaki felt oddly humbled by that. “Why would you think that? I just love him. I can’t do anything like cook or watch out for his health.”
“That’s exactly it,” Temari countered. “What Gaara’s always needed is for someone to really love him. At first I was okay with all those one-night stands I kept hearing he got into, because all those girls had sighed over him and admired him. But that was until all those girls got over it. As we mentioned before, no woman who’s truly in love would want just one night.”
Suzaki understood that. But she still didn’t quite understand how she was “what’s best for Gaara.” Biting her lip, she had to ask for more of an explanation than that.
Temari just smiled at her and answered, “If you really want more of an answer, maybe you should talk to Gaara instead. I’m sure he’d love to give you all the examples you’d need.”
Somehow, the way she’d said that, it made Suzaki think of double meanings. And then it made her blush, thinking that besides talking, all she and Gaara ever really did with one another was fight or give in to passion.
They spent a good portion of the day talking, laughing, joking and teasing, Suzaki and Temari. It wasn’t until Suzaki noticed that the sun was almost gone that she realized just how late it’d gotten, and she hadn’t had a real lunch, just a bunch of snacks from her time here. It also occurred to her that she’d left her teammates at the training grounds to come here, and hadn’t so much as contacted them since.
Still, she felt it a bit more necessary to go back, maybe start preparing dinner if Gaara hadn’t already returned. It felt odd to think that she was perfectly willing to cook in his house, for him more than for her. She wondered if that was one thing Temari meant when she said Suzaki was best for him.
Bidding goodbye to Temari, Suzaki left, though not in much of a rush. When she got back and shut the front door behind her, she waited a moment to glance about and see if he was back yet. Then he stepped out of his room down the hall and shut the door.
Though that reminded her of this morning’s intrusion, it wasn’t at the top of her mind. No, at the very top was heavy confusion, because as soon as she saw him, she’d said, “Tadaima.”
Even more confusing was when he answered, “Okaeri nasai.”

Note: For those of you who don’t know the above phrases.
“Tadaima” : I’m home. Naturally, it’s said when someone returns home. In this case it’s somewhat inappropriate, since Suzaki doesn’t really live there.
“Okaeri Nasai” : Welcome home. It’s the reply to “tadaima.”
The greetings are almost always used together, though sometimes “tadaima” will be used by itself. For instance, a person living alone will return home and say it but receive no reply.
