Tsunade started, her concentration broken from healing her hand at Jiraiya's words. “That's it! I knew I had heard something... Wait... Vampire… Oh, no...” she turned her eyes from Jiraiya to Sasuke once again her expression unsettling to look upon. ::That means he feeds on living blood... can't come out during the day.... and I have no idea how to kill him if he claims immortality...::
::Well, that explains how he survived a kunai in the gut,:: Naruto thought wryly, his thoughts momentarily derailed from devising a way to get out of there without being dragged back. Kyuubi's growling grew louder every minute. The demon did not like being in the presence of a predator on its level.
“'So-called' gift is right,’ Jiraiya said without emotion. This was serious. He almost started cursing Sarutobi for allowing the seeds for this tragedy to germinate, but he couldn't blame his teacher. No one could have foreseen this. But the Uchiha clan was truly lost to Konoha now, along with the Sharingan, and Konoha would feel that loss.
“What would you know, old man!” Sasuke snapped irritably. He was calm until pushed - and he had been that already this night - and then his Vampiric temper would flare. This time... it got the better of him. “Have you ever come home to find everything you've ever loved bleeding and dead?! Have you ever run through the bloodied streets of your own Clan stumbling in the half-light of the evening over lifeless limbs?! Have you ever forced yourself to enter a place that scared the shit out of you at the delicate young age of eight and found your parents murdered on the floor?! Been trounced by your own once-beloved Nii-san and then told you weren't even worth killing because like any little kid you didn't want to die and you were too scared to think clearly so you ran...” His teeth clicked shut and his jaws ached with the force he was using to hold them together while the tide of emotions settled a little more. He could feel that his recent use of power and more than anything his rage were bringing the Blood Lust to the surface of his being. It wouldn't be long before he would have to leave them for the night, or hurt them. His top gums and the roof of his mouth were already burning slightly and his tongue told him his canines were needle sharp, but as of yet, as short as they ever were.
Vampires felt things like no other creature. Feelings and emotions, were intense and sometimes blissfully painful. It was like the climax of sex sometimes and like having a red hot poker jammed through your most sensitive vital organs at others. Sasuke still hadn't mastered his control of the sensations, and from what Makoto had said, he was better off not, or else he would become like some Ancients, emotionally dead and brutal. Sasuke didn't want to end up like Itachi. Period.
Forgetting that he was supposed to be ignoring Sasuke, Naruto stared at him with wide eyes. That was the most he'd ever heard out of him about the slaughter of his clan... and he felt his small understanding of Sasuke grow a little. So that was why - or at least part of the reason why - Sasuke had refused his friendship and the company of others so often. He was afraid of losing someone close to him again. Vaguely he remembered Sasuke mentioning something to that effect back during their first Chuunin exam, but the memory was fuzzy with time. Kyuubi's roars destroyed his train of thought. The fox could sense the Vampire's growing hunger and was screaming at his host to get away!! Not able to resist such an instinctual urge Naruto vanished in a cloud of smoke.
Neither Jiraiya nor Kakashi could come up with an answer to Sasuke's outburst, though they both sensed that the boy was becoming more dangerous with each passing moment.
The hair on the back of Tsunade's neck prickled suddenly. Something wasn't right here, or at least something wasn't safe. “Stupid brat!” she snarled in response to the aggressive-like atmosphere. “Do you think you are the only one with a tragedy in your past?! Do you think for even one moment that no one else has suffered heavy losses?!”
She took one threatening step forward intending to go knock a little sense into his thick skull in hopes of jumpstarting his apparently stunted mental processes. That one step was as far as she got. And they had all figured that Naruto had run for the same reason as before...
Those vicious, unwanted words and that one threatening gesture was enough to send Sasuke over the edge, but somehow - unbelievably - he managed to pull himself back from the frenzied cliff of his instincts and emotions. His fist slammed pinky-finger first into a tree near him as he bowed his head trying to rein in his temper and his Hunger. His shoulders heaved with his efforts and his bangs shadowed his eyes from view. No body moved for several moments and then Sasuke slowly lifted his eyes to look upon what he should, and would, never have as prey. His eyes were drenched in the blood of the Sharingan, the red irises made all the eerier by the tips of his fangs as they peeked out from between his lips while he panted. If he had been beautiful before, he was sinful now in his most predatory state.
“Go... now.... and do not return for the rest of the night...” he managed to grind out. He couldn't move or he'd hunt them. They had to leave him. Now.
Jiraiya certainly didn't need to be told twice. He was gone in a flash, taking Tsunade with him before she could protest. He'd heard of what vampires could do to their meals and didn't want to witness it for himself.
Kakashi too left in a cloud of smoke, determined to find the two Sannin and get them to tell him everything they knew about vampires.
It was several long moments before Sasuke let himself move from his spot where he leaned on the tree with the fist he'd slammed into it. In a flash he was moving and in a very short time, two deer had given their lives to keeping Sasuke's feeding-frenzy in check. Animal blood was never as fulfilling as human blood, but it would tide him over. Satisfied that he would not jump the first human he saw, he left the second deer-carcass as he had the first, for the scavengers to eat and then turned following the scent of sweat, the sounds of practice, and the sweet aroma that was all and only Naruto. He stood in the shadows at the edges of the clearing when he'd reached the end of the scent trail and now watched Naruto in silence for a little while.
Naruto was trying to drive Sasuke from his mind again by taking out his frustration on a large tree stump. He was determined to exhaust himself to the point where his sleep would be dreamless. He had almost forgotten about Sasuke, almost stopped having the dreams - about what could have been if Sasuke had stayed - and the nightmares, in which he saw all the ways Sasuke could die. Secretly he'd been a little relieved when Sasuke came back. It meant he hadn't sent him to his death. But to find out he was living and dead at the same time... Naruto shook his head violently to get those thoughts out and kicked the tree harder. His shirt was starting to stick to him from sweat. He tugged it off with an annoyed huff, hating the feel of cloth chaffing his skin, revealing a build very similar to that of a gymnast. Tossing the shirt aside he continued to kill the already dead tree.
Eyes that simmered with a different hunger traversed every inch of Naruto's body lingering over a few particularly tasteful points of the slightly shorter blond's physique. Smoothly tanned skin stretched and pulled alluringly over firm muscle and Sasuke felt some other parts of himself stirring for a change. He decided now would be the time to make his presence known before things got too outrageously... complicated. He stepped from the shadows and waited. If Naruto did not sense him, then certainly Kyuubi would and the dumb fox had to at least sense that he was no longer an immediate danger.
Of course, Kyuubi did noticed and began growling, alerting Naruto to Sasuke's presence, but he was determined to ignore him. Not making the slightest move to acknowledge him, Naruto continued to kick and punch the tree. He wasn't aware in the least that he was providing quite the show.
Sasuke approached slowly, enjoying the performance at a distance, but certain it would get only better as he got closer. Thoughtfully he reached out to Kyuubi and whispered to the Fox Demon, *I will not harm your host, Kitsune... You have my word, though the word of a blood sucker probably doesn't convince you...*
He had told the Sannin only part of his abilities so that he might have a royal flush up his sleeve should he ever need it. Telepathy was one of the few gifts he'd most likely tell the least amount of people he had it, along with Empathy and a few other choice abilities. “Naruto.... we need to talk.”
“What is it with you and talking all of a sudden? Usually it's you telling me to shut up, not the other way around,” Naruto muttered without pausing in his exercise, wondering why Kyuubi's growl had decreased in volume. It was only a marginal decrease, but still.
“My nature has changed a little...” he said with a droll and somewhat impatient tone to his voice as he watched Naruto continue his exercises. “Naruto...” he reached out, slowly by his own standards, and caught Naruto's foot on his next kick, which put Sasuke between the tall tree-stump and Naruto.
“It's changed more than a little,” Naruto shot back, pulling his foot out of Sasuke's grasp and walking over to his discarded shirt, using it to wipe his face. “Normally you'd also be avoiding me like a plague.”
“It's changed... whether a little or a lot, it has. Fine,” he admitted and followed Naruto's every step. There was no way the boy could get away, but it made Sasuke feel better to stay close to him. “The point is ... that I want to talk now... if you are willing to talk with me...”
“Why?! Why now?!” Naruto demanded, finally looking Sasuke in the face, his eyes burning with frustration. “What about three years ago when I was trying to be the friend you said I was only to get consistently shoved away?! You didn't want to talk to me then! Why should I want to talk to you now?!”
“You don't want to know why I behaved the way I did?” Sasuke asked looking steadily into those blazing blue eyes. Those soulful, expressive pools of sapphire. “I never meant to hurt anyone... Not really. I just... didn't want to get hurt again myself.” He felt like he was nine years old again, bawling to no one about how miserable an heir he was because nobody was there to hear him or tell him otherwise.
“Well maybe I don't want to get hurt again either.”
Naruto pulled his shirt back on and headed out of the clearing, his apartment being his destination.
Sasuke decided now was the time to be relentless, the time to show Naruto the same determination that Naruto had once shown him. So he followed the loudest ninja he had ever known and all the way he spoke, softly, at a level that Naruto's slightly advanced senses could hear him better and more clearly than the average human about them at any moment. “I don't know how much of my situation you know Naruto... but Itachi told me once, the secret of obtaining the Mange Sharingan. It was simple, it was easy... and I couldn't do it. I couldn't turn on my friends and kill them... So I avoided close ties. Well, avoided them as best as I could...” he stopped talking. They were at Naruto's complex now, but had yet to go up the stairs.
Naruto paused in the search for his keys, horrified at what Sauske had just said.
“...Is that why you tried to kill me after telling me I was your closest friend that one time...?” he murmured, not sure which answer he wanted.
There was a long pause. Sasuke was in no way proud of being so weak as to give in as much as he had. Things were different now though. He would never yield to another person again. Not like that. “Yes... I was weak-minded back then... unstable..., but yes. You are correct.” Still his gaze did not leave Naruto.
“You've always been unstable,” Naruto muttered, but there was a faint - so faint it was almost non-existent - note of teasing in his voice. It wasn't there in his next words. “And your brother is a sick bastard. So is your clan for coming up with a technique like that.”
Feeling the slightest amount of relief wash over him, Sasuke nodded his head once. His expression was still serious, he still looked like the same old Sasuke (only much, much more pretty), however, his eyes were more expressive. “I agree. Itachi is sick and he will die like the diseased thing he is. My clan is already dead, having paid the price for their own mistakes.”
“Good. I would have killed him myself by now if he wasn't so blasted fast at using Jutsu...” Naruto grumbled, fishing for his keys again. He found them and unlocked the door, opening it only enough for he alone to slip through and hoped Sasuke would take the clue to leave him be. It didn't take him long to climb the stairs and enter his apartment. Once inside he began to strip, planning on taking a shower before falling into bed.
Sasuke stood at the door to the complex for several long moments deciding what would be the best course of action. It was a while before he finally decided persistence was his best bet. It had only been a few minutes so he assumed that Naruto would be moving about up there in his apartment preparing for bed or something and so... without much more thought put into his decision Sasuke made his way up to Naruto's apartment as only a Vampire-ninja can. One powerful jump and he was on the ledge of Naruto’s open window then inside.
And then Naruto walked in... wearing only his boxers, which he had just been about to pull down when he noticed Sasuke. As it was they were riding very low. First Naruto's eyes got huge, then his face turned beet red, and finally came the nuclear explosion. “HAVEN'T YOU EVER HEARD OF COMING IN THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR?!?! WHAT IS IT WITH YOU AND MY WINDOW?!?! GET THE HELL OUT BEFORE I RIP YOU APART!!!”
Looking very much like he was going to make good on his threat he rushed furiously at Sasuke.
It took Sasuke a moment to recover enough blood to his brain to register Naruto's rather loud explosion. He had very little time to gather his scattered wits though as Naruto lunged at him. Sasuke reacted automatically and as Naruto reached him, one steel-like arm wrapped around Naruto's waist and dragged him snugly against Sasuke's firm and slightly taller frame. Then Sasuke's mouth caught Naruto's lips... gently. Meanwhile that as of yet unaccounted for hand caught Naruto's left butt-cheek, squeezing tenderly. Sasuke had gone from absolutely shocked as hell to sensual seductor in less than one second and gracefully at that.
Naruto froze in shock. This was the last thing he'd expected to happen. The hand on his rump drew a rather undignified - not that anything Naruto did was ever dignified - squeak from him. This wasn't supposed to happen! Sauske was supposed to go away, not KISS him! ...Or be so gentle, or taste so wonderful, or feel so perfect pressed up against him... Naruto's heart took advantage of his brain's current state of befuddlement to return the kiss almost shyly. One of the things that had plagued his dreams for the past three years was the last kiss he and Sasuke had shared. He'd wanted that again... and here he had it. It was almost too good to be true.
The hand left Naruto's rear to splay against the other boy's lower back just beneath the curl of Sasuke’s elbow as Sasuke got a better hold of his baser urges. Damn his strong Vampiric emotions, Lust being the strongest of all, of course, but he couldn't really complain too loudly seeing as Naruto was kissing him back. Those same sweet lips he'd dreamed of for that last three years moved coyly against his own and Sasuke's eyes slid shut. This was heaven, salvation, and hope right here in his arms. Naruto gave Sasuke something to live for, something to cling to. Sasuke's arms tightened, carefully holding Naruto to him almost desperately.
Trembling Naruto put his hands on Sasuke's chest and tried to push him away as he broke the kiss. “No - I -…” he stammered, feeling so horribly confused. This was exactly what he'd wanted not to happen. This would make it so much harder to avoid getting close to Sasuke again... but it felt so wonderful... but it would just lead to him getting hurt again... wouldn't it?
“Shh...” Sasuke soothed him softly. Refusing to let go of the fox-boy just yet, Sasuke reached up and tucked Naruto's head under his chin, simply holding him for a long moment before whispering softly. “I have trouble controlling myself sometimes... I'm sorry,” but the apology was for confusing his former-teammate, not for kissing him and Sasuke tried to make that clear by running his fingers lightly through the back of Naruto's hair. Sasuke, for now, would take what he could get. He wasn't like that before... but things had changed him a bit in the years he'd been away from the things he hadn't realized he'd come to cherish so much.
Shivers ran down Naruto's spine at the feel of Sasuke's fingers in his hair. It felt so right... but it shouldn't have... right? ::I have to stop this... I'll just get hurt again... I don't know if I can bear him breaking me again...:: He pushed again, harder this time. “Go away,” he growled, but it was half-hearted.
“No, Naruto. I've been going away for too long. I want to stay... home this time,” he murmured softly letting his breath stir spiky blond locks before he rested his cheek on top of Naruto's head.
“I said go away...! Why won't you leave me alone...?!” Naruto demanded, his voice breaking slightly as he was torn between accepting and refusing Sasuke's closeness.
“Because I know exactly what it's like to be alone, completely...” he murmured still refusing to let go seeing as Naruto wasn’t struggling like a mad thing at the moment. “Because haven't you been alone long enough... I know I have been...” Sasuke dropped a kiss into bright sunshine yellow hair and ran his fingers up into the silky spikes from the back of Naruto's neck. The other hand, along with that arm, was still locked around Naruto's middle holding him securely.
“I haven't been alone!” Naruto argued hotly, reaching behind him in an attempt to unwind Sasuke's arm. “I have Kakashi-sensei and Iruka-sensei and Sakura-chan and all my other friends!” He shook his head, trying to get Sasuke's hand out of his hair.
“I'm not talking about just friends, Naruto,” Sasuke murmured and planted one last kiss on top of Naruto's head before letting him go completely, but slowly.
“Well I can't afford to have anything else...” Naruto muttered, making a beeline for the bathroom. That had a door he could lock and no windows. Meaning Sasuke couldn't get in... unless he teleported, which if he did Naruto would kill him.
Sasuke moved up to the bathroom door as it shut and he heard the lock click home loud and clear. “Good night... Naruto,” Sasuke murmured to the door loud enough for Naruto to hear him as he touched the wooden door with tender fingertips. Then he was gone.
Naruto sank to the floor and buried his hands in his hair, head between his knees. He hated running away, but that seemed to be the only thing he could do right now... Clearly he couldn't best Sasuke in strength anymore, at least not without drawing on Kyuubi's power, and even that was only a maybe. Speed, well, he'd never been faster than Sasuke so that didn't really matter. But it just wasn't FAIR when Sasuke used his advantages against him like that! Especially when Naruto was so bent on hating him! It didn't help that Sasuke holding him, kissing him, wanting to be around him was a dream come true. ::A dream that can easily end in another nightmare...:: Naruto reminded himself. If he woke up from the dream only to find Sasuke pushing him away again... His heart couldn't bear another wound like that. He would break completely.
Muttering hot curses under his breath Naruto stood back up and finally got the shower he was supposed to have started a half hour ago. The next two hours were spent trying to scour himself raw in an attempt to clean himself of Sasuke's smell and touch. That mission was only marginally successful. No matter how hard he scrubbed he could still feel the heat and firmness of Sasuke's body, still taste his sweet lips...
Eventually Naruto fell into dreamless sleep on the couch, still swearing until unconsiousness silenced him.
