Chapter Sixty-Nine “Do you take this man to be your husband?” The words rolled over Ibiki, and he turned his head again, searching the guests for a glimpse of his own spouse. He'd been so sure Kakashi would be at the wedding, but he'd yet to spot his distinctive silver hair anywhere in the crowd. “By the power of my office, I hereby pronounce . . .” A mournful howl interrupted the Rokudaime and all eyes turned towards the disturbance. Bull had abandoned Kurenai and the twins and was shoving his way down the row, heedless of the guests trampled in his wake. The normally laid-back hound threw his head back and howled again, plowing determinedly forward until he'd reached Ibiki's seat. “Boss needs you,” the ninken rumbled. “Grab my collar.” “We're in the middle of a wedding,” the interrogator hissed. “He's had months to talk to me, he can wait until the ceremony is over.” “He's dying. We have to go.” Bull let out a deep whine and pawed at Ibiki's arm, finally clamping his jaws around the interrogator's hand and teleporting them both. They reappeared in the midst of chaos, two screaming infants and an unconscious, and hemmorhaging, copy-nin. Ibiki scooped up his husband's bloody body, desperately trying to remember if Hinata had been at the wedding. After a moment of indecision he made the signs and jutsued right back into the middle of the ceremony. The Hokage stopped midword, and the guests all shifted uncertainly, twisting their heads to catch a glimpse of the disturbance. “It's sempai,” Itachi murmured brokenly. “His chakra is nearly gone.” “What the hell happened?” Jiraiya's bellow seemed to galvanize the stunned on-lookers into action. Hinata pushed through the gawkers, dropping to her knees to push chakra into the crude incision. “Where's the baby?” * ^ * ^ * When the pain faded Kakashi opened his eyes, twisting around as he searched the darkness for any sign of his children. The gash across his abdomen was still bleeding sluggishly, and the heavy scent of blood made his nose wrinkle in distaste. “You've made quite a mess of yourself.” The copy-nin almost dislocated his neck, his head snapping around in search of that all too familiar voice. “Am I dead?” “What do you think?” Amber eyes slid over his awkwardly sprawled form. “I'm so pleased you're here, koishii. I didn't expect to ever see you again.” “I've missed you, too,” Kakashi admitted. “It took me a long time to get over your death.“ “I should have watched you.” Orochimaru pursed his lips as he struggled with how much to reveal. “But it hurt. I missed you so much more than I ever thought I would. I never imagined I'd see you like this, though. What were you thinking?” “I wasn't.” The tight, lost, quality of his former lover's voice had the sannin peering into hazy mismatched eyes. He lifted a long-fingered hand, settling it in his lap and absently stroking it with his thumb as he waited for the skittish jounin to continue. “Itachi and I have a son.” The admission clearly hurt and the copy-nin couldn't continue to meet his eyes. “I won't get to see him, or his sister, will I? That must be the punishment for leaving them to die.” “In the first place, I refuse to think of you being here as a punishment. But why this? Was your life with Itachi that horrible?” Orochimaru's question was met with silence. The jounin had no idea how to explain the way his life had careened off course. “Itachi and Jiraiya are getting married,” he finally blurted. “I'm technically married to Ibiki . . . or, I was. We aren't together anymore, though.” “It's alright, you don't have to explain anything to me,” the sannin assured him. “I was just surprised. After the way you spoke of your father I always assumed suicide was the furthest thing from your mind.” “Suicide?” Kakashi croaked. “Is that what you think happened?” “Your abdomen is slashed from side to side and there isn't another mark on you. What else would I think?” “Not that,” the copy-nin insisted with a shudder. “Never that.” “I should have known better than to suggest it.” Orochimaru pulled the bloody jounin into his arms, planting a tender kiss on shaggy silver spikes. “You lived through far too much to give up now. I take it you were on a mission?” “I lost a kidney in Suna. No more missions, I'm afraid. Since my retirement I run a bookstore.” “That hardly sounds like a dangerous profession,” the sannin retorted. “Did one of your old enemies find you?” “I did it to save my daughter's life.” Kakashi's whispered explanation raised more questions than it answered. “I'm afraid I'm still confused,”Orochimaru admitted. “How could your death save her life?” “Not my death, that wasn't the intent. She needed to be born and I couldn't get to the hospital. An emergency c-section was her only hope.” “You cut yourself open and delivered a baby?” The disbelief was obvious. “This is all an illusion, isn't it? You just said Jiraiya and Itachi were getting married. My old teammate has made his thoughts on men sleeping with men very clear. That would never happen.” “I'm afraid that's my fault,” the copy-nin admitted. “I was worried about Itachi being alone so I set them up. I made sure Jiraiya would see us together. You know the old lech couldn't resist a free show. I didn't think . . . I'm sorry. It wasn't my intent to hurt you.” “You haven't hurt me. That was a long time ago, I was a different man. Besides, once I met you everything changed. I couldn't go back to not loving you.” Orochimaru's brow wrinkled as yet another impossibility occurred to him. “You're a man. Men don't have babies.” “An unfortunate side effect of a jutsu,” Kakashi explained. “Well, not unfortunate, I have daughter and a son now.” A long moment later the words finally hit him and the implacable jounin began to tremble. “No one knows where they are. My children are going to die and it's all my fault.” * ^ * ^ * Bull remained behind, torn between his devotion to the copy-nin and his need to protect the children. He tried, and failed, to come up with a method to carry both of them at once. Katsumi's wails built steadily, unnerving the usually impassive ninken. When Obito's voice joined his sister's, the summon knew he had to do something fast. Usually an answer would have presented itself, but the copy-nin's wavering chakra was a powerful distraction only compounded by the children's fearful cries. Bull concentrated on his pack mates, hoping to call one to help, but they were all in the other realm and he got no response. “What?” Uuhei snapped when she finally appeared. “Boss is dying. What is so important that you aren't there?” “His children,” Bull rumbled. “Go get help, they need human attention.” * ^ * ^ * “I'm not interested in your problems,” Jiraiya growled when the ninken appeared at his elbow. “Can't you see there are more important things going on here?” “I need you to listen to me,” Uuhei insisted. “Kakashi needs me, I don't have time to coddle his summons.” The sannin stubbornly refused to listen, far too preoccupied with the life and death drama playing out in front of him. “I didn't want to come here,” the usually placid ninken growled. “I would rather eat rocks than deal with you, old man. I need your bitch's help with the pups. He's mother to one of them, after all.” “Where?” Itachi cut through the bickering, his voice reminding them that, blind or not, he was the reigning Otokage and long feared across the Five Nations. * ^ * ^ * Having never been to the cabin before left him at a disadvantage, but he followed the shrieking wails and scattered chakra bursts. “There, there, precious,” the stoic Otokage cooed as he scooped Katsumi into his arms. “Don't cry. I'm here. Let's get you warm, dry and fed.” The ninken eyed Itachi warily. He realized the man was Obito's other parent, but he also remembered the years he had been considered an enemy of everything he pledged to defend. Still, the fact remained that he couldn't handle two infants alone. “What do you need, Uchiha?” “I need something warm to wrap her in, and something like a blanket that I can wrap around both of them. We need to get them to a doctor to be checked out.” Obito regarded his other parent. Itachi would have been proud at the precocious use of their bloodline limit, had he been able to see it, that is. The infant's sharingan whirled as he attempted to connect with him the way he had with Kakashi. “He saw what happened,” Bull huffed. “You need to find someone who can handle those eyes of his. They should be able to communicate with him like the Boss does.” “He uses his sharingan?” The Otokage had never heard of a child so young activating his blood line limit. “Has sempai been training him already?” “He uses it to show Obito things before he does them, so it isn't as frightening.” The hound considered his next words carefully. “He is your son and should be with you now. But he is also Hatake, and pack, so I will come assist you.” “Keep an eye on me, you mean,” Itachi muttered. “I'm hardly on my own, Bull. I'm the Otokage, after all. There are plenty of people to help me. Not to mention the fact that I'm married now. My husband will be happy to help.” “Who is this husband of yours?” The nin-ken was immediately suspicious. There was no way he'd let this Uchiha expose the Boss's son to any sort of danger. “He's Hatake also. Hatake Jiraiya and I were married a few minutes ago. We will care for the children until sempai recovers.” The surety in Itachi's words was not echoed in his heart. His new husband had never expressed any interest in children, and he was about to bring not one, but two, infants into their home, and on their wedding night, to boot. A/N - I'm SO sorry it took so long to update, unfortunately I was totally blocked on how to progress :( Now I seem to be back on track so the updates should pick up again.
