*~*~*~*
He and Orochimaru watched as Naruto stared at his father from across the table, Kabuto sitting next to him, one hand on his thigh under the table to help him keep calm. He picked up his cup, sipping at it with a raised eyebrow as he waited to see what was going to go down next. He idly wondered just how much further Minato would be pushing Naruto before the blond snapped and finally chewed on him.
He could still remember the times that Kushina got pushed beyond a point of no return and destroyed someone. It had been quite amazing to watch whenever it hadn’t been him who her anger had been aimed at. And he knew that Naruto had that same temper and ability to flay a person with his words alone.
“Ah, fuck it,” Naruto muttered, slamming his teacup down with a snarl, pushing to stand and stare at his father. “Listen, Namikaze, I haven’t been your son since the day you lost mother. Okay? You were so damn busy with mourning her and focusing on a village that didn’t like me, that I wasn’t on your damn radar. Oh yes, you made sure I had everything I needed. Physically. But emotionally? Not so much. If you weren’t busy working on paperwork or making the Council happy, you were busy thinking about how to deal with those issues even when we were together. All I had asked was for you to be there for me the day of my graduation. That was all I wanted. And like so many other things, you weren’t there.”
Minato opened his mouth before snapping it shut, mind working back over the years before Naruto had left. He found that Naruto was speaking the truth about what had gone on, making him feel even worse. Jiraiya and Kakashi had both chewed him out once Naruto’s paperwork and letter had been found for being such a negligent parent. Kushina, if she wasn’t with the Shinigami at the moment, would have kicked his ass from the other side for doing what he had done.
He had come to Oto figuring that he would check in, create the full treaty with Orochimaru, check on the Uzumaki that had been found and were living there, sign the paperwork for Sasuke to stay, and then be on his way. But then he had been greeted by a Naruto who was so much like his mother with his coloring that it had been like a sucker punch to the gut.
Naruto grunted and stood straight, smoothing out his kimono. “If you will excuse me, I am going to go to my office and do some more paperwork. If I’m bothered for anything beyond an emergency, I will geld whoever bothers me,” he stated. Kabuto shot the group a look and quickly followed his lover with a sigh. He grabbed Naruto’s hand and turned them towards Naruto’s suite of rooms, closing the door behind him.
“Are you alright?” Kabuto asked, holding Naruto close. The blond groaned and melted into the other man, head dropping onto his chest and pressing as close as he could.
“I don’t know.” Naruto hummed as Kabuto stroked a hand down his back. “I really don’t know. I don’t think he ever really thought about how I felt when I was younger. He was so caught up in his own grief that I think he really forgot that he was supposed to be a parent.”
Kabuto sighed. “He was in the wrong to have lost himself. He had options to help him get back on his feet enough to take care of not over himself but also you. I know that you went to therapy yourself when you started to get really bad mentally from everything,” he said. He wasn’t happy with Minato and he had told the man so when he had met him face to face for the first time in so many years.
Minato hadn’t said a thing after Kabuto had told him what he thought he had done wrong with his son but had looked rather thoughtful. He hoped that this would be the last straw to make the man rethink how he had treated his son and how he had allowed himself to fall so deep into pain.
Naruto sighed as he pulled away, rubbing at his eyes. He hadn’t let the tears of frustration fall, but his eyes were on the red side. “Okay. I really do need to get back to work. We have to deal with them for a little while longer and I do want to see Kakashi. It’s been a long time since that I have been able to just relax and talk with him.”
Kabuto hummed and stroked one of his cheeks, leaning down to steal a soft kiss from the other man. “Come. Let us go get some lunch at that one stand that you like so much. It is about that time. Then we’ll go work together and get things done,” he promised. Naruto chuckled and nodded, grabbing his toad shaped wallet, taking Kabuto’s hand and lacing their fingers together.
They left the compound, Kabuto sending a snake to tell Anko where they were, the woman having arrived a week before from her own liaison mission with Kiri. They arrived at the stand, the snake coming back with a request from Anko for as much dango as the money in the offered pouch could get her. Naruto giggled softly and promised to get the dango before they headed back. The two lovers settled at a table, each ordering a bowl of ramen and a couple plates of dango, warning them that Anko was back and had sent a pile of money for as much dango as possible.
The retired nin sighed and rolled his eyes, adjusting his prosthetic leg before creating a water clone. “I’ll have a scroll full for ya,” he promised, walking off with the clone. Naruto giggled and settled in with his cup of tea, Kabuto watching him with a fond look. The blond blushed and smiled at him as they waited for their food to arrive. A waitress came by and dropped it off with a smile before heading to greet new customers, leaving them to eat.
Naruto sighed happily as he lifted the noodles of the ramen to his mouth, eyes fluttering shut in pleasure. Kabuto chuckled, swirling the noodles around in his own bowl before taking a bite. He made his own sound of pleasure. “You can tell he learned from Teuchi and his daughter,” he said, Naruto nodding as he chewed and swallowed.
“Yep. He said that when he had to retire because of his leg, he started to wander around with his son-in-law, who was trying to gather recipes from around the countries to use for a restaurant. When he arrived in Konohagakure, he met old man Teuchi and learned how to do the ramen. When he came here, he brought that knowledge and started to play in the last year or so,” he said, smiling and chuckling. “I can’t bitch or moan about it. I get delicious ramen and he’s teaching his own youngest daughter everything that he knows. She’s got a good head on her. She wanted to be a kunoichi, but she doesn’t have the chakra to do it. At least not a whole lot. To be truthful, Haruno had more when she was a genin then she does. But she still trains to be able to protect herself and others. She’s pretty handy with a butcher knife.”
Kabuto laughed and prompted his partner to tell him how he knew that. As Naruto talked about how a spy had gotten past the walls but was having issues getting out, and had come across the young girl, the silver haired man sighed and relaxed, feeling truly at home and happy with his lover.
