Chapter 6
Running
“Do you think it’s wise?” A man stood outside the room, looking in one sided glass mirrors. Seven children all roughly the same age were inside sleeping. “Wise? We’re about results. Not wisdom” Sneered the other in a smooth voice, his yellow eyes following the gaze into the room. They were all newcomers to the program and young enough that he was sure it would be successful.
“They’re children for godssakes!” The brunette hissed as his arms crossed over his chest “Don’t you think you put the other boy through enough?!” He snapped, “And now…this…” His voice went soft and his eyes took in the children that were sleeping steadily. “You mean what WE put him through. You’re a part of this too. Iruka”
Iruka scowled a moment but his eyes swung to a movement from the far corner of the room. The smallest boy had jerked up in his bed, his mess of blond hair framed his face and he looked stricken around the room. The blue eyes were wide with some terror from his dreams. He had come here to study the improvement of the human body, he had wanted to make things better but this was not what he had signed up for! This was…this was madness!
Iruka winced at the tears in the eyes, the poor boy must have made a noise because another stirred and sat up sleepily. Iruka couldn’t hear what they were saying but the small boy crawled out of the bed and into the one right next to him, the black haired boy having scooted over to make room. The annoyed expression on the other boys face was softened when the blond flopped down on him and fell right back asleep.
Iruka sighed quietly, “They seem to be close…” he pulled the charts off the wall noting the bed arrangements and his eyes widened at the name. “No!” He looked at his associate and saw the curling grin stretch across the pale face, the yellow eyes gleeful.
“Oh yes dear Iruka. We have his brother” Came the silky smooth reply, obviously enjoying the discomfort in the other. “And I plan on replicating the experiment with him. I am sure it will be even more successful than before”
~*~
Itachi strode into the small house liquidly stepping aside from the carefully laid traps. Of course his brother had set some. If he hadn’t he would have been very disappointed with him. His arm was tucked in the opening of his long black jacket at his neck. His eyes snapped to the side as a hairsbreadth brush of the door sent a knife flying.
No. More than one.
His hand flicked up catching one between his fingers. He had doubted he would find anything here but he was surprised with the detail of the work. He avoided several of the well laid traps and mused lightly. Had his brother finally woken?
His lips turned downward at the soft snap the toe of his sleek shoe. His eyes took in the broken wire that had been darkened like the floor, unlike the other wires he had encountered. “Ah…a trap within a trap” He said out loud. He barely had to look around to see what it had set off. 20 seconds. He ignored the small angry red blinking as he calmly moved towards the door. He slipped outside, closing the door behind him. His steps were even and steady as he stepped further from the house.
Suddenly the windows blew out in a massive concussive explosion, the ground shaking under his feet for a brief moment. Itachi swung his leather case up dismissively blocking some of the debris, his steps never faltering from the explosion.
That had been close. “impressive.” He finally looked back, seeing flames licking out, the roof collapsed and half the house had been obliterated. “You might actually stand a chance little brother.” He turned back unlocking the sleek black Mercedes he had parked further down, the hour was officially up. Time to give chase. The burning wreckage of the little house disappearing in his rear view mirror.

“I’m huuungry…” Naruto whined his feet were up on the dash, Neji at the wheel. Sasuke was in the back seat. Kiba was next to him. Akamaru was in the car back with Sakura and Ino.
“We’ll stop soon” Neji replied testily. After talking to Iruka once more he had wanted to put Sasuke with both Ino and Sakura and possibly Kiba but he didn’t trust him not to try anything against the girls. Besides, he wanted to keep his eyes on this bastard.
“But I’m starving now...all the fighting and arguing wore me out…” Naruto groused his head tilting back a moment. “We’ll probably stop at the next restplace” Kiba piped up quickly getting Naruto’s attention. His dark eyes slid to their prisoner. The man had been quiet since getting patched up…and despite Naruto welcoming the assassin in with damn open arms he would have rather just left the guy in the house to be found by his own people!!
“Hey you! Asshole!” Naruto ignored Kiba having turned a bit and looked back at Sasuke. Neji frowned, “Naruto. Don’t talk to him” He hissed. He was ignored of course as Naruto said, “Hey…bastard! Look at me” The eyes finally slid from the window to the other, the side of his face was still a mottled mess. Sakura had saved his eye and fingers but still…the ordeal wore her out.
“hn.” Sasuke said lightly eyeing the blue eyed man. “What kind of food do you like?” The blond grinned and Sasuke resisted the urge to roll his eyes. “Idiot” He looked away even as Neji grabbed Naruto’s shoulder and pushed him back into his seat. “Would you sit down and stop talking to him.” Hyuuga looked in the mirror at the captive and scowled even more, his one hand tightening on the wheel. The only use the other had right now was possibly information, but Naruto wouldn’t even let Ino do her job!
Sasuke could feel the glare and ignored it, his eyes on the traffic passing them. He heard Naruto make a huffy agitated reply to Neji before flopping back in his seat. He released a slow breath his fingers reaching up and touching around his eye. He remembered the fight. He remember his phone getting shot out of his hand, how his fingers had been destroyed practically. However, why couldn’t he really remember what she had done to him?! It was a hazy, fuzzy thing in his mind. He traced a bruise around his eye. What the hell had she done to him??
_____
A few hours passed and Naruto shifted on the seat, tilting his head back, they had come to a rest stop to eat some food, Kiba was already pulling some from the coolers they had packed. Sasuke hadn’t moved in his seat or looked around when they stopped. He didn’t want to think about how much Sakura had to fix but…what Sasuke had said…how had he known?!
“Hey…Sasuke” Naruto watched as the eyes slowly turned towards him, the mouth in a permanent frown. “I thought your nanny said you shouldn’t talk to me” Sasuke drawled lightly even as Naruto huffed, “yeah well you’re the one that tried to kill me so I don’t exactly blame him!”
Sasuke tch’d under his breath glancing away and back to Naruto. Kiba had been told to watch them while Neji went to the bathroom but the dog man had been too worried about his stomach. There were so many questions he had but none of them could really be answered. At least most wouldn’t be given freely he was sure. His lips pulled down a moment catching those eyes on him, his insides lurched uncomfortably. “You should have killed me.” He finally said, “Why didn’t you? Why did you just…” He hesitated for half a second then pressed on, “Kiss me?”
That wasn’t really the question he had meant to ask but it was out now. Naruto blinked, staring at him before looking away, “you were going for your gun…so I figured it would distract you…” He shrugged and glanced back, a light coming in his eyes; “Why did you like it?” He asked with a curling grin. Naruto saw the eyes widen a fraction.
“No” Sasuke hissed. Naruto laughed suddenly before he went sober, “You…” he started before looking out the window seeing Neji coming towards the car and stopped. “Don’t be mad!” He said as he opened the door, “Kiba was just getting sandwiches, it’s not like he can go anywhere!” The door shut and muffled the rest of his conversation with the angry brunette.
Sasuke shook his head and watched the blond move around the car. His jaw tightened and he tugged at the binds on his wrists. Neji had demanded that he be bound while at the rest stop. He pushed away the thought of the kiss and put his mind firmly on the present situation. Even if he got away, Itachi wouldn’t just let him live now, so why hadn’t he just killed him then? It would have been easy and lot less messy if he had. His lip curled, Itachi wasn’t known for brotherly affection.
Why?! He closed his eyes, working through every memory of the fight. Every move. So many things he should have done different, why hadn’t he? Besides, Itachi could have made his shot 5 different times too.
Naruto’s eyes had been red at one point, it hadn’t been the trick of the light either. So red…and so angry.
Sasuke let out a breath, he had opportunity to do more damage but he hadn’t taken it. Why had he made so many mistakes? Why had the blond kissed him?! His lip curled a moment as he wriggled his wrist and felt the slightest give.
There were too many questions, he worried about Shikamaru too on top of all this madness. The door jerked open next to him and Sasuke glowered as the bright grinning face, a sandwich shoved under his nose.
“Figured you’d be starving” Naruto beamed at him. “I told you to get away from him!” Neji snapped pushing Naruto to the side and throwing the wrapped sandwich on Sasuke’s lap and slamming the door. Sasuke caught one look of anger in the blue eyes before they landed on him over Neji’s shoulder. Why did he feel like every time he looked at Naruto there was this feeling that made his insides lurch a little like he missed a damn step?
~*~
It was dark by the time they stopped. At least Sasuke assumed it was dark with how cool the air was. They were not taking risks, they had blindfolded him for the last hour of the drive. Though Sasuke had counted one off ramp to the right, three lefts, about 4 stop lights and finally 2 more rights. He didn’t know exactly where they were but he had a good feeling of the location.
“You’re going to stay in here” Kiba had steered Sasuke into a small space. He had counted fifteen downward steps, it smelled slightly damp and felt cool like a basement. His tested his binds briefly his head tilting “hn” he turned dismissively ignoring the growl of anger, “You can take that damn blind fold off when I leave”
Sasuke ignored the tone and listened as the room door slammed, three pounding steps and finally the faint bang of the upstairs door.
Carefully he reached up and pulled off the blindfold. Four walls. No windows, one shabby looking bed. A single lamp. No closet or cabinets. That was it. Sasuke turned his body towards the door and stared at the peeling white paint and reached for the knob. It wasn’t locked. No, it couldn’t be locked. As he stepped into the basement he could see why it wasn’t. There was truly nowhere for him to go. It was dark but he could see a single glass cinderblock window, there was an open toilet, a sink and single mirror in one corner and what looked like shower.
Well at least he had that much going for him. He swung his gaze to the opposite side of the room. A dim over hanging open bulb was on at the very top illuminating the steps. It was the only way out and no doubt it was locked and would have a guard on it. Probably Neji by how much the man seemed to hate him. He noted they hadn’t bothered to cut him loose from the binds around his wrists.
Slowly he released a breath moved towards the toilet to relieve himself. As he washed his hands, careful of one being bandaged still, though the fact he was tied made it a futile effort. He finally took himself in. The entirety of the left side of his face was mottled blues and blacks. He took in several very oblong bruises on the sides of his jaw and on either side of his neck. Where Naruto had gripped his head? His eyes widened a fraction, the flighty memory sharpening into focus.
Sasuke winced heavily to Sakura’s touch. She was moving fast pulling every piece out of the side of his face first, “Lift your head” She said curtly before hissing at the damage. The man was barely conscious at this rate. “…have to save your eye...” Not that she had missed the damage to the hand but his eye was her biggest concern.
“Sasuke” Sasuke gritted out sucking in a breath at the sensation. It was a burning agony that seemed to escalate with every small breath and move. “Sasuke” He heard Naruto repeat but he ignored it. “…fuck” He snarled to a touch. “Don’t...move!” Sakura snapped, then, “Naruto hold his head, his face is practically ripped to ribbon!” She demanded. Sasuke wanted to balk but a large hand cupped one side of his face free of the shards the other cradling up under his chin and ear, locking his face in an open position.
For one brief moment Sasuke was sure his neck was going to get snapped, or he was going to get throttled. His arm jerked back but he felt the tickle of blond hair at his forehead and a voice. “Easy.” Naruto said quietly. “Let her work” His breath brushing against his forehead. He still felt the panic in his chest. He was truly a damned disgrace. Trained in so many ways to kill, and assassinate. To withstand torture. To never be caught anyway. There was blood moving freely down his face and into his mouth and all he could feel was fluttery panic.
“Don’t say anything…just focus on my voice. Im going to tell you a story…”
Sasuke gritted his teeth to the words. They were spoken so softly. It was Naruto’s voice but...at the same time it wasn’t. A story. He felt fingers tracing up the side of his face. The red hot pain erupted even more and Sasuke twitched in the grip biting back the cry.
“Listen...listen. A story about…a strong boy...that fought a giant monster…”
Hot poker agony rolled through him, emanating from the spot Sakura worked on, something buried deep in his eye. The pain was there but his panic was fading.
“This monster, he was killing everyone, and the only one that could help was this boy. He had powers, special powers that would keep people from getting hurt.” The cadence of Naruto’s voice broke through some of the torment.
“But getting the powers hurt too, getting strong hurt but the boy did it because he knew he had to save everyone. He had to save them all. So the boy faced off with the monster, it was a massive fox. It had nine tails and it destroyed everyone that dared crossed its path…”
A fresh wash of hot blood cascaded down his face, trickling into his mouth. Sasuke sucked in a breath before screaming out as a thumb pressed hard into his eye his body jerking but the grip Naruto had on him got stronger. The head pressed against his own.
“The boy faced off with the monster and fought him with all his might. He slashed his paws…and cut through his fur with his mighty long sword…days he battled. Days.”
A warmth began at his eye that didn’t feel like pain or blood. The torture eased back a little. Something damp and warm covered his eyes leaving him in darkness. It wasn’t over yet. He jerked again as fingers pressed flaps of skin back together. A strangled noise ripping from his throat. “Naruto!” Sakura hissed, and those large hands stilled him once more.
“Days...Sasuke..Days he battled this monster, he held him off but couldn’t seem to defeat him. He had to defeat him. Had to save those he loved.” Naruto’s voice was against his ear a steady cadence of words. In the darkness it was the only thing Sasuke could focus on.
Dully he felt hands move down his arm and he twitched it in response. That felt even worse than his face. It felt all wrong. All wrong.
“Listen.” that voice pulled him back, “His mighty sword managed through the beasts hide finally but he was so tired already. How could he bring down such a beast with just his sword?”
Sasuke licked his dry lips, why…was the story so familiar?
“How could this one little boy, who thought he was the strongest, bring down such a monster?” Breath tickled over his forehead and Sasuke’s breathe sharpened as a throbbing pain rocked up his arm to the woman’s touch.
The monster story. Where had he heard it before?
Fingers urged his palm to spread and Sasuke screamed out feeling the last of the ligaments, muscles and bone crunch in all the wrong ways. His mind swam, everything was getting so black.
“…took the beast into himself to save the people…” Sasuke remembered the ending. He practically screamed it out loud.
Sasuke was gripping the sink with one hand sucking in a few breaths. When had he started shaking?? He lifted his face again. Bruises. No scars. He clenched his jaw hard, his face ached abominably but it was still intact. What she did, that healing, and that story?! Why was that story familiar?! As soon as the bullet hit his phone knew he had lost his hand, knew he lost his eye. He had accepted it in those seconds…so how in the hell had she done it?!
Sasuke took a calmly breath and closed his eyes. They hadn’t gotten rid of him yet, he was being protected by the blond for some reason. Even so. If push came to shove he wondered if the others could convince Naruto to leave him behind. A sudden boil of feeling rolled through him. Anger? Why? He pushed it down and glanced into the mirror once more. There was still blood in his eye. He leaned closer and frowned at the location, it was only in the iris…
Suddenly he turned before the door even opened at the other side of the room and he stared at Sakura from her pinned spot at the top of the steps.
She gazed at him sternly holding plate with a bowl on it. “Food…” She offered and frowned a little more, “Don’t do too much…I did what I could but there’s still damage” She had moved down a few steps placing the plate on a lower one.
Sasuke moved closer but watched her hurry up, “What did you do to me? How did you do it?” He asked swiftly and saw her stop. Her shoulders bunched a moment and finally she turned her face was dark, but there was something else there. It wasn’t fear. It was…uncertainty. “As if I would tell you. I only did it because Naruto asked. Just eat your damn food and don’t try anything stupid” She managed out in a rushed manner before turning. Within three steps she was back out the door, slamming and locking it.
Sasuke moved over and picked up the food eyeing the instant ramen and bread roll with mild dismay. What kind of idiot made this part of their diet?
