Thank you to everyone who reviewed. You guys are just amazing! Once again, I had to post my responses to my forum page and that will be at the end of the story.
This story is Beta's by the amazing MisatosPenPen! Thank you! ^_^
There was an eerie silence in the hallway of Konoha High, the entire student body stopping to stare at the peculiar sight of a despondent Uchiha; a phenomenon so rare it was practically unheard of. Since lunch time, students were seen rushing from their classrooms at the bell just to get a glimpse of Sasuke walking by completely out of it. By the end of the day most everyone knew it had to do with his best friend, Naruto Uzumaki, who was conspicuously absent today.
From there the rumors abound, from the stupidest to the radical. One teen could be heard telling his friends that Naruto had been abducted by aliens in the middle of the night and that his home was now occupied by high-ranking government officials; stupid. Another teen, not ten feet away, was heard telling a group of girls that Naruto had witnessed a crime and was now, at this very moment, heading for a foreign country in Witness Protection; radical.
Sasuke heard none of it. He didn’t even hear Sakura a first, until her shrill laughter pierced his Naruto-laden thoughts. Every teen in the hallway turned to watch avidly.
“Wow, you really are out of it,” Sakura laughed. “Who would have thought the easiest way to dethrone the king would be to go after your queen?”
Sasuke bypassed every stage of emotion and landed on anger in two seconds flat. Rounding on Sakura, he hissed, “What do you want?”
“Oh, I think I’ve made myself very clear on what I want, Sasuke. All you have to do is step back and let it happen, because it will happen.”
“It’s not going to work, so back off!”
“Why should I? We both know I won’t go down without a fight.”
“He’s taken!” Sasuke snapped.
“No, he’s not. I hear you broke things off…very careless of you to do that Sasuke, knowing that I’m waiting in the wings. Naruto’s free game.”
“Naruto has better sense than that. You have nothing going for you after what you’ve done.”
“What I’ve done is open his mind to more than one possibility. Have you forgotten that he’s had a crush on me before?” Sakura paused, watching a foreign emotion swipe across Sasuke’s face. She laughed in delight. “Oh, you haven’t forgotten. Well, Sasuke, that crush has lasted longer than your entire relationship to date. I think I’m in great standing next to you.”
“He won’t accept you, not after what you’ve done,” he repeated, but it sounded weaker.
“I’d be more worried about myself if I were you. You should really ask yourself if Naruto will accept you after what you’ve done.”
“I know he will.”
Sakura scoffed and stepped around Sasuke, chuckling as she passed. Before she went too far, she spoke again. “You screwed up and now everyone knows it. I told you Naruto could do better than a conceited jerk like you, maybe now he’ll realize that.”
It took amazing willpower and discipline for Sasuke not to hit her as she walked away. His fists were clenched so tightly, his nails biting into his skin, that he drew blood. But he ignored the pain.
No one dared to move in Sasuke’s presence, the hostility pouring off the Uchiha in waves enough to freeze everyone within thirty feet. Shikamaru took the initiative, having witnessed everything from his locker; he grabbed Sasuke, pulled him through the corridor, and into an empty classroom.
He pushed Sasuke into an empty desk and waited for him to turn and face him before he slapped the Uchiha with as much strength as he could muster.
“Snap out of it,” Shikamaru demanded.
Sasuke brought his hand up to his burning cheek, shocked. “Why did you do that?” he mumbled.
Shikamaru got him on his other cheek. “Get a grip of yourself! The Sasuke Uchiha I knew never would have let me get away with hitting you; twice! Snap out of it before you lose Naruto!”
That was enough to snap Sasuke out of his stupor, his head jerking to stare at Shikamaru towering over him. “I won’t lose him! Not to that bitch; not to anyone!”
“Good, glad to hear it.”
“I have to get to him before Sakura does…” Sasuke mumbled, his heart pounding with sudden panic.
“Calm down,” Shikamaru said. “You don’t have to worry about Sakura beating you to Naruto.”
“Why not?”
“Because, I have it on good authority that Naruto is home sick with a cold. Is it any wonder walking home in the rain with no umbrella…”
“He has a cold?” Sasuke asked, worry now evident in his voice. “I have to check on him…”
Shikamaru sighed and muttered ‘troublesome’ under his breath. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Sasuke.”
“Why not?” Sasuke demanded.
“He’s sick. How would you feel about an ex showing up to take care of you when you’re supposed to be broken up?”
“But, we’re not broken up…”
“Right, you’re taking a break from one another.” Shikamaru rolled his eyes. “It’s the same difference. I don’t think he wants to see you at the moment, let alone feeling like shit. He should be fine over the weekend. But this actually works in your favor.”
“How so?”
Shikamaru rolled his eyes, again. Sasuke was still too far out of it for his liking; he was tempted, but instead he offered a warning, “Don’t make me slap you again.”
Sasuke glared; Shikamaru grinned.
“That’s more like it. Now, since Naruto is home sick, he won’t have any visitors…not even you. That also means Sakura can’t visit. Now, you have the weekend to plan your ‘counter-attack,’ so to speak, because you know Sakura won’t let him go easily.”
“No, she won’t,” Sasuke admitted, recalling all the times he was on the receiving end of her particular brand of persistence.
“Go home, get some rest, and plan your ‘attack’…just keep it legal.”
Sasuke grunted as Shikamaru turned to leave.
Shikamaru stopped and turned back. “Oh, just so you know…everyone but Sakura knew about you and Naruto being a couple. Really, it was the worst kept secret. But that works in your favor now.”
Sasuke cocked an eyebrow.
“Sakura’s little ploy a moment ago worked against her. Everyone in this school now hates her.”
Shikamaru left Sasuke alone to wonder how he and Naruto could be so obvious. Their relationship wasn’t meant to be a secret, it just happened that way; and with little persuasion from either side. Naruto feared his father’s reaction to being ‘bi’ (no matter how many times Naruto admitted to being gay, Sasuke knew he still admired the female form) and Sasuke feared his fan club/entourage/stalker’s retaliation for their relationship. But everyone knew and no harm befell Naruto…Until Sakura found out. He was right to worry.
Twenty-five minutes later, Sasuke stepped through his front door. He would have been home sooner, but he spent ten minutes just staring at Naruto’s house. His impulse was to go visit and take care of his dobe, but he thought it was better to heed Shikamaru’s advice and go on the offensive. Even if he patched things with Naruto, Sakura would still be a thorn in their side. She had to be dealt with first.
Itachi was sitting on the stairs reading the Konoha Daily, waiting for Sasuke’s return. He closed the paper neatly and laid it beside him on the step, giving his little brother his full attention.
“How was school?” Itachi asked.
“It sucked,” Sasuke admitted.
“Is that because Naruto wasn’t there?”
Sasuke let his backpack slide off his shoulder and land on the floor with a thud. “Do I even want to know how you knew that?”
“Mom called the in-laws today and talked to Kushina. It came up in conversation,” Itachi lied, not wanting Sasuke to know their families had been discussing their problem behind his back.
Sasuke heaved a heavy sigh.
“He’s sick and I can’t visit him.”
“I’m sure he can survive the weekend without your excellent skills in caregiving.”
“Hn,” Sasuke snorted, a small smile forming on his face. All Uchiha were adept at caregiving, which is surprising since no member of the Uchiha ever became an M.D.
“He’ll be fine by Monday,” Itachi assured him.
“I know.”
“So how do you plan to make things right?” Itachi asked.
“First, I’ll apologize.”
“Naturally, so what will you do after that?”
“Make-up sex.”
Itachi laughed and shook his head.
“I don’t think Minato would be happy to hear that.”
“He doesn’t know,” Sasuke said.
Itachi stopped laughing and leveled an even gaze at his little brother.
“Do you honestly think that he doesn’t know by now that you and Naruto were in a relationship? Naruto probably told him last night and that was why they were so quick in cancelling dinner.”
Sasuke deflated on himself, looking paler than usual.
“Do you think he knows?” Sasuke asked. “Oh, God, he probably hates me now!”
“But that’s only if Naruto told him about the two of you,” Itachi teased.
“Does he know?”
Itachi chuckled, delighting in Sasuke’s dismay. Sometimes his little brother made teasing him too easy.
“I don’t know if Minato knows,” Itachi lied, standing up and freeing the staircase so Sasuke could make his escape. “But I’m sure you’ll find out soon either way.”
“How so?” Sasuke gulped.
“Dinner with the in-laws has been rescheduled for Monday evening.”
~~
It was close to dinner time by the time Kushina and Minato made it home from their walk. Minato shut the door behind him quietly as Kushina passed him and headed for the steps to check on Naruto. She tiptoed up the stairs, cracked his door open silently, and sat down on the side of the bed. Her hand found his forehead, the skin warm against her chilled fingers.Naruto shifted and opened his eyes sleepily.
“Hey, sleepy-head, how’re you feeling?” she asked softly.
“Hmm,” Naruto groaned, blinking rapidly to clear the sleep from his eyes. “Better.”
Kushina smiled. “Are you feeling up to coming downstairs and having pizza in the living room?”
“Movie night?” Naruto asked, perking up.
“Yeah, movie night,” she laughed again.
It was a weekly occurrence in their house to devote at least one night to watching movies and ordering out. It was one of Naruto’s favorite nights, because it meant he could eat with his fingers and not worry about silverware. It was an added bonus to be able to eat in the living room.
Naruto threw the covers away from his body and sat up, shivering in the cooler room.
“Bundle up, mister.”
Naruto donned a pair of socks, after his mom demanded it, pulled on a navy blue and orange fleece jacket, and froze.
Kushina noticed the change immediately and tilted her head to the side, asking, “What’s wrong?”
Naruto twittered nervously, fighting back a sudden fit of tears. “Sasuke bought this for me.” He indicated the jacket that he had grabbed without thinking. It was his favorite.
His voice was barely above a whisper, but Kushina heard him perfectly. She pulled him into a hug as he fought back another breakdown.
“I miss him mom,” he admitted.
“Of course you do,” Kushina soothed.
“I made things worse, did I?” Naruto cried.
“Oh, Naruto,” Kushina sighed. “I-”
“I know I did. Sasuke warned me to stay away from Sakura, that he didn’t trust her, but I didn’t listen. I thought if I could be a good friend to her she would leave us alone, that she might actually be happy for us. How stupid was that?”
“Not stupid at all, dear. That’s just who you are.”
“And now Sasuke doesn’t want to see me anymore. He was so angry…”
“People say things when they’re angry that they don’t mean. You know what Sasuke’s like.”
Naruto nodded and pulled away, laughing as he wiped at his tears. “Yeah, he is a big jerk sometimes.”
“I’m sure, once you’ve had a chance to talk, that things will settle down. Everyone has arguments, but it’s getting passed them that matters.”
“You and dad never argue.”
“Of course we do,” Kushina laughed. “You just never hear us.”
“No, mom, not like Sasuke and I…we…It wasn’t nice. It hurt to hear him speak like that, but it hurt worse to know it was my fault. All I had to do was listen to him.”
Kushina sighed and cupped Naruto’s cheeks, tears welling in her own eyes. “You’re dad and I had an argument right before I gave birth to you.”
“Yeah, about my last name,” Naruto said, having heard the story more times than he could remember.
“No,” Kushina said, shaking her heard.
Naruto frowned in confusion. “Then why?”
“Your dad wanted to move to Suna. Just pack everything up, including a wife who was 8 months pregnant, and move. He was offered a job, a very good job that would have meant financial stability for the rest of our lives.”
“You didn’t want to move.”
“Not for a million dollars and trust me, the job was worth that. We argued fiercely, for days on end, and only stopped when I went into labor three weeks early. It was a difficult labor, with complications…” Kushina paused to wipe at her tears and compose herself.
Naruto swallowed thickly. He knew his mother had trouble carrying him, but she always made it seem like it wasn’t so bad. This was the first he was hearing anything different.
“It was rough on your dad too. He worked himself up something fierce and had to be removed from the hospital by security. The nurse had to go all the way to the parking garage to inform him you were born. He was only allowed inside if he behaved himself and escorted by security. He cried the moment he saw us.”
“Is that why we stayed in Konoha?”
“No, actually, I promised we could move to Suna if you had my last name. He agreed.”
Naruto frowned again. “Why didn’t we move then?”
“He had a better offer thrown his way not long after. Fugaku was starting a company of his own and looking for a business partner. It was a risky venture and far from financially secure, but your dad decided to chance it. It worked out in the end. And you’ll see. Everything will work out with Sasuke too.”
“Yeah,” Naruto nodded, deciding that he would apologize the minute he saw him.
“Let’s get going, the pizza should be here any minute, and if we leave your dad alone for too long you know he’ll pick one of those war re-enactment movies he loves to watch.”
Naruto grimaced and made a beeline for the steps. The sound of the doorbell could be heard, but neither paid it mind until Sakura’s voice floated through the foyer and up the stairs. Naruto stalled, sinking to the step to listen.
Minato answered the door, able to hide his displeasure behind a mask of civility. “Sakura,” he said.
“Hi, Mr. Namikaze, I just wanted to see how Naruto was feeling since he wasn’t in school today.”
“He’s sick in bed with a cold.”
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that,” Sakura replied and she actually did sound sorry. “Would it be ok if I visited?”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea. He’s sleeping off his cold medicine.”
“Oh,” Sakura said, disappointed. “Can you let him know I stopped by then?”
“I’ll let him know you did.”
“Thanks, Mr. Namikaze!” She smiled and walked away.
Minato closed the door, shaking his head. A frown was clearly in place.
“I told you I didn’t like her,” Kushina said, walking down the remaining steps.
“You don’t have to tell me ‘you told me so’, I get it, dear.”
Kushina hummed pleasantly as she passed, smiling. She always did love being right.
The doorbell rang again and Minato was relieved it was the pizza delivery man instead. He brought the box into the living room and sat it on the coffee table while Kushina fought with Naruto to cover up with a blanket.
“Just humor me then!” Kushina shouted, shoving the blanket in Naruto’s face and sitting down on the couch with a huff.
Naruto grumbled, but covered up anyway; anything to keep his mother off his back. He leaned forward and snagged a piece of pizza while Minato started a movie Kushina picked. But Naruto wasn’t focused on the movie, his thoughts floating to Sasuke as he picked at the pepperoni. He was determined to apologize, one way or another, even if Sasuke didn’t want to see him right now.
~~
The walls seemed to be closing in on Naruto as he made his way through the hallway towards his locker on Monday. Every step he took, eyes followed him chased by muttering. A few students actually pointed as he passed. He was confused to say the least. He felt himself flush with embarrassment and lowered his head until he reached his locker. Grabbing the books that he would need, he dashed to first period, hoping that the muttering would stop. But it followed him instead.
Everyone in the room turned to look at him, following him to his desk at the back of the class, before resuming in whispers. Naruto frowned and bit his lip, barely raising his head when the teacher entered and called for quiet.
In the wake of silence, Naruto felt a chill about the room despite its warmth. He couldn’t bring himself to lift his head and look around, believing it was directed at him.
“How are you feeling?” Sakura asked, leaning in close to whisper in his ear.
Naruto jerked his head towards Sakura, surprised that she was sitting so close. Usually, she sat towards the front of the class, well away from him.
“Well?” she asked.
Naruto stalled, forgetting that Sakura had asked him a question. He shook his head. “I-I’m fine, thanks,” he whispered.
“Glad to hear it,” Sakura said. “I need to talk to you after class.”
Naruto nodded, but his insides squirmed unpleasantly. He just wanted to find Sasuke and apologize. And hopefully, Sasuke would accept it.
~~
Four doors down, Sasuke was waiting impatiently for the end of class. He knew Naruto was in school today because everyone was talking about it. He wanted to find him quickly and apologize. There was a lingering fear, though, because Sakura shared first period with him, but Sasuke was hopeful, after everything she pulled, Naruto wouldn’t give her the time of day. He just had to get to the classroom before Sakura really had a chance to try.
He’d blocked her earlier by cornering outside the woman’s bathroom, preventing her from approaching Naruto until the first bell rang. But he couldn’t block her all day, so he needed to square things with Naruto and get him to fight for them when she inevitably pushed back. He had to make Naruto see how important this was.
Sasuke was so lost in thought that he missed the bell and only came to when everyone started to file from the room. He cursed his misfortune and pushed through the crowd, making his way to Naruto’s classroom in a hurry.
He was about to enter when Naruto’s voice hit his ears. Stalling, he hid and listened.
“You wanted to talk?” Naruto asked.
“Yeah,” Sakura laughed. “I tried to visit all weekend and check up on you, but your dad said you were still sick in bed. You don’t look sick now?”
Sasuke’s hands curled into fists, angry that Sakura had been trying to see Naruto all weekend when she knew he wasn’t up for visitors. How inconsiderate could someone be?
“I’m feeling better now. Mom made me stay in bed though.”
“Did they tell you I visited?” Sakura asked.
“They mentioned it-”
“Then why didn’t you tell them I could visit?” Sakura demanded.
“I wasn’t feeling well enough for visitors.”
“But Sasuke was ok to visit?!” she spat.
Sasuke felt his anger rising, until he heard Naruto gasp. A squiggle of uneasiness settled over his stomach.
“He didn’t visit,” Naruto admitted sadly.
“You sound almost sad,” Sakura said, but she herself didn’t sound sad. In fact, to Sasuke’s ears, she sounded pleased.
“Wouldn’t you?”
“No, he’s a conceited jerk! Don’t you deserve better than that?”
He heard Naruto laugh nervously. “He is a conceited jerk-”
Frowning as Naruto’s words were cut off, Sasuke peeked around the corner and gasped. Sakura was leaning into Naruto, kissing him in what can only be described as passionately. Numbly, Sasuke pushed away from the wall and walked away, fighting back the prickling sensation in the corner of his eyes. He had lost Naruto.
~~
Naruto stumbled backwards at Sakura’s assault, but managed to get his hands between them and push her away. Hard.Sakura stumbled and tripped over a chair, balancing herself on a desk. Her eyes were wide; shocked that Naruto had pushed her away. She laughed and took a step closer to Naruto, but Naruto shook his head and moved further away.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
Naruto sighed and closed his eyes momentarily. “Look, I’m flattered that you’re interested, but I’m not…” Naruto paused to grimace.
“You’re not what?
“I don’t like you that way.”
“Are you sure? How do you know if you don’t give it a try?” Sakura smiled, taking a step closer.
“I’m sure,” Naruto stated.
“Why don’t you give me a chance? I can change your mind-”
“I don’t want to change my mind. I’m interested in Sasuke-”
“Why!?” Sakura shrieked, turning angry. “He’s a jerk who doesn’t deserve you! I can treat you better!”
Naruto shook his head. “Sasuke is a jerk, but he’s my jerk. He treats me just fine, better than I deserve right now.”
“But, he gave up on you! I heard it around school; they heard him say he wanted a break!”
“You’re mistaken,” Naruto said sadly. “I’m the one who gave up.”
“Please,” Sakura scoffed. “Sasuke doesn’t need excuses for his behavior.”
“It’s not an excuse, it’s the truth.”
“All the more reason to choose me then,” Sakura pleaded. She tried to reach out for Naruto’s hand, but he pulled it away.
“I choose Sasuke.”
“Why! What does he have on you? Is he blackmailing you?”
Naruto was the one to laugh this time. “He’s not blackmailing me. He doesn’t have anything on me either.”
“It doesn’t make sense! You chased me forever and then over summer break you just stopped.”
“So you finally noticed?”
Sakura stopped short and swallowed. “What do you mean by that?”
“I gave up on my feelings for you, because they didn’t hold a candle to the amount of feeling I have for Sasuke. I was so focused on you and my spurned advances that I didn’t realize how close I really was to Sasuke.”
“You’re not making sense. If you had feelings for me, how could you have feelings for Sasuke too?” Sakura ground out.
“That’s the thing. I realized that I didn’t truly have feelings for you. It was puppy love, a harmless crush, infatuation; call it what you will, it lacked substance.”
“You don’t mean that,” Sakura said, shaking her head. “You wanted to be with me.”
Naruto bit his lip nervously, but decided to continue. He knew his words would hurt, but he had to make a stand for Sasuke. “I finally realized the only reason I chased you was because you were chasing Sasuke.”
Sakura laughed. “Please, you’re making this up as you go. Stop fighting me already.”
“I’m not making it up, Sakura. I have loved Sasuke for as long as I can remember.”
“Loved him?” Sakura asked. She was fighting back tears now.
“I love him very much. I was just afraid to tell him, so I hid behind my crush for you. But Sasuke wouldn’t let me hide anymore.”
“But I could make you happy,” Sakura whispered weakly. She no longer fought the tears that threatened to fall.
“You probably could, if Sasuke didn’t already make me very happy.”
“Even with his attitude?” she demanded.
“Even with his attitude,” Naruto repeated. “I’ve loved him from the moment he said I was his ‘wife’ when we were five. I never had to worry when he was around.”
Sakura was shaking with tears and flushed with humiliation. She couldn’t imagine, after everything that Naruto was turning her down. She thought for sure after she had proven Sasuke to be a top-grade jerk, that Naruto would drop him. But Naruto already knew that and accepted it. She no longer knew how to fight it. “Where does that leave me?” she asked, her voice shaking and sounding weaker than Naruto had ever heard it.
Naruto inhaled slowly. “Friends.”
It was a simple answer, but too simple for Sakura. She shook her head. “I can’t be just friends, not when I’ve finally realized what I’ve missed out on. It’s not fair.”
“No, it’s not fair, but there are more than just me and Sasuke in the world. I’m sure there’s someone out there who would love you the way you’re meant to be loved.”
“So it’s over? There’s no chance?” Sakura cried.
“No. It will always be Sasuke; even when there’s no Sasuke.”
Sakura gave a weak nod and reached for her bag. She made it to the doorway and turned back. “I can’t stop myself from waiting for you.” She disappeared into the hallway.
Naruto shook his head before murmuring, “You’ll be waiting forever.”
He bent down and grabbed his backpack, making his way to his next class. He realized that it was already half over and sighed, deciding to wait outside his third period class instead.
“You’re late for class.”
Naruto swung around at the voice, his eyes lighting on Sasuke leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. Naruto couldn’t stop the smile from working its way to his face. “Hey, I was looking for you.”
“Well, you found me,” Sasuke replied stiffly.
Naruto’s smile faltered. “What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
“Yeah,” he muttered. Sasuke dug his fingers into his arms, trying to control the hurt and betrayal he felt in his heart.
Naruto took a step closer, about to lay his hand on Sasuke’s arm, when Sasuke jerked away and snapped, “Don’t touch me.”
“W-why? What’s wrong?”
“You are; that’s what’s wrong.”
“What did I do? Is it about Friday? Look, that’s why I was looking for you, I wanted to apol-”
“Save it!” Sasuke snapped, cutting him off. “I actually can’t believe I regretted saying I wanted a break from each other. Well, one thing is clear, I don’t regret it now.”
“What?” Naruto asked, confused and shaking his head. “I don’t understand. What did I do?”
“Nothing, Naruto, you never do anything!”
He continued to shake his head in confusion. “What didn’t I do?”
Sasuke felt his rage bubble over, ready to be released. “Do you really think so little of me? Huh!”
“I-I don’t understand. I’m sor-”
“I don’t care what you understand or don’t!” Sasuke snapped. “I hope you enjoy her Naruto, because we’re through. I don’t want to ever talk to you again!”
Naruto gasped. He felt numb all over again, but now there was a tone of finality that was lacking from before. It hit him like a boulder tumbling down a mountainside with reckless abandon. There was no chance to make it right; Sasuke wouldn’t let him.
A wave of anger surged through him out of nowhere, and without thinking, he punched Sasuke with his broken arm. “I HATE YOU!” he shouted before running away, distancing himself from Sasuke as fast as he could.
He ran until he couldn’t anymore. Settling himself on a bench, in a park he didn’t recognize, Naruto cried. Everyone and everything was ignored, even the throbbing pain he felt in his broken arm.
~~
Regaining his feet, Sasuke made his way to the nurse’s office, where he held an ice pack to his now bruising cheek and eye. He would have a black eye for sure, something no Uchiha was ever graced with wearing.
“Do you want me to call your parents?” The nurse asked.
“No, I’ll be fine. Can I just have the pass back to class?”
“You should stay here, at least until the swelling goes down.”
“I’ll be fine, can I have that pass?” Sasuke ground out.
The nurse clucked her tongue, but signed the pass anyway. Sasuke shoved it into his pants pocket and made his way through the deserted hallway. He pushed opened the front doors and walked home, deciding that he missed too much of his classes anyway.
He slammed the door shut on his return home, ignoring his parents and Itachi’s shocked expressions. Itachi called after him, even tried to force his locked door open, but Sasuke ignored him and dove head first on his bed. He winced as his tender cheek hit the comforter.
“Sasuke, open the door?” Mikoto pleaded.
Sasuke rolled his eyes and turned his stereo on, blasting the music.
“Oh,” Mikoto fretted, pacing outside Sasuke’s door while wringing her fingers. “What do you think happened?”
“I don’t know. I’ve texted Shikamaru, but he just said that after first period, Sasuke hadn’t shown up to class,” Itachi said.
“Oh, I wish he would turn off his stereo and talk to us.”
“I can’t get him to talk, but I can do something about the music,” Itachi stated. He disappeared and five minutes later, the music stopped as the power to the house was cut. “Has he answered?” he asked, rejoining them.
“No, he won’t talk to me; his own mother!”
Fugaku pounded on the door. “Sasuke, open this door right now!”
He was met with silence, which enraged Fugaku. He wasn’t used to disobedience. “Open this damn door now, before I ship you off to some military school!”
“Sasuke, please,” Mikoto pleaded.
Silence.
Itachi sighed. “You’ll want to open the door before I show mom and dad those pictures of you from our last trip to Suna. You know the ones.”
Itachi counted to five and smirked when Sasuke threw his door open, glaring bloody murder. It was an impressive feat, added by the shiner he now sported. Itachi actually shivered.
Mikoto gasped and reached for Sasuke’s face, examining the black eye. “Who did this?” she demanded.
But Sasuke wouldn’t say. He kept his mouth shut the entire day, refusing to answer, even under threat by Itachi. By the time dinner time rolled around, everyone was exhausted.
“Do you think we should cancel, Fugaku?” Mikoto asked, a sigh escaping her petite lips.
“No, it may do us some good to visit. Besides, Minato has great taste in liquor. I have a feeling we’re going to need it.”
“You’re right, of course. Maybe Naruto will know what’s wrong,” Mikoto whispered, pulling on a light jacket against the chilling February air.
Sasuke’s mood soured further during their walk to the Namikaze/Uzumaki’s, but he didn’t fight going. He was bracing himself for the inevitable. They rang the doorbell and were greeted by a frantic Minato.
“What’s wrong?” Mikoto demanded immediately.
Minato swallowed the lump in his throat. “Naruto didn’t come home after school.”
Mikoto’s eyes widened and she forced her way through the house in search of Kushina, who was in the living room on the phone.
Kushina took one look at Mikoto and burst into tears. “I don’t know where Naruto is!”
“It’s ok,” Mikoto soothed, drawing her friend into a hug. “He’ll be home soon. Did you try calling him?”
“It goes straight to voice mail,” she wailed.
“It’ll be fine. You’ll see. He’s just at a friend’s house and forgot to call. His phone must have died,” Mikoto lied. She shot Itachi a pointed look.
Itachi nodded and pulled Sasuke from the living room and outside.
“What the hell is going on?” he demanded.
Sasuke opened his mouth to respond, but Itachi cut him off. “And don’t you lie to me! Where is Naruto?”
“I don’t know,” Sasuke answered truthfully.
“What happened today? You come home with a black eye and now Naruto is missing. Is he responsible for this?”
Itachi reached out to touch Sasuke’s cheek. Sasuke jerked away and glared at Itachi.
“Wow, I never thought I’d see the day. I say good for Naruto,” Itachi snapped, crossing his arms.
Sasuke ground his teeth and balled his fists. “Yeah, because Naruto never does anything wrong, right?” he hissed.
“Then tell me what happened.”
“He chose Sakura!”
Itachi uncrossed his arms, a look of confusion crossing his face. It was the first time Sasuke had ever seen his brother so confused and if it had been any other time, he would have savored the moment. But he wasn’t in the mood. In fact, he wanted nothing more than to go home and sleep and not have to think about anything again, let alone how he would deal with seeing Naruto tomorrow.
“That doesn’t make sense, Sasuke. He doesn’t feel that way about her, you know that.”
“That’s what I thought, but I saw them together.”
“Come on Sasuke, talking is not a crime!”
“They were kissing!” Sasuke exploded. “I went looking for him to apologize. ME! Apologize! Half this mess is his fault too! But I was going to apologize and take him back. Well, not anymore. He made his choice and now he’ll have to live with it. I’m done!”
Sasuke turned and walked away, deciding that he was going to go home and crawl under his covers and not bother himself with thinking about Naruto for the rest of the night.
“Where are you going?!” Itachi called after him.
“Home!” Sasuke yelled back.
Itachi sighed and shook his head. He opened the door and walked back into the living room where Kushina was still crying. Minato was trying to soothe her, but it was halfhearted. He was clearly worried too.
“Where’s Sasuke?” Mikoto asked.
“He’s gone home.”
“What’s going on?” Fugaku questioned.
“Hopefully, a gross misunderstanding,” Itachi said.
“And if it isn’t?” Minato whispered.
“Then your son is very stupid.”
“What did he do,” Kushina demanded.
“I only know Sasuke’s side and I would rather wait to hear Naruto’s before I say anything.”
~~
Naruto sighed, wiping the last vestiges of his crying fit. Now that he’d calmed, the pain in his arm became unbearable. He was also cold.Standing up, he walked through the park, backtracking the way he came. Nothing looked familiar to him, but he couldn’t bring himself to be worried. He was just tired.
Making his way back into the city, Naruto found that he finally recognized where he was. He walked slowly through the streets, ignoring the dark clouds overhead that were beginning to rumble with thunder. He wasn’t in a hurry to get where he was going.
Walking into the hospital sent chills up his spine. He got a strong whiff of industrial cleaner and grabbed his stomach. The smell always made him feel sick and it was only made worse because he was alone.
The receptionist smiled brightly, too brightly for Naruto’s liking. She maintained her smile, even when she denied him admittance.
“Why?” he sighed.
“We need your parent’s permission to treat you.”
“Can you call them?”
The receptionist plastered on a wider smile. “Of course.”
Naruto was directed to sit in the waiting room after she hung up. He was harboring a small flicker of hope that the waiting room would empty out quickly so he wouldn’t have to sit there much longer when Kushina burst into the waiting room and made a beeline for Naruto, pulling him into a bone-crushing bear hug. Minato followed more leisurely, sitting down on Naruto’s other side in silence.
“Why are you here?” he finally asked.
“I hurt my arm,” Naruto said, tapping a finger against his cast. “Again.”
“And how did you do that?”
“I hit it against something hard.”
“That wouldn’t happen to be Sasuke’s face would it?” Minato asked, turning to look at Naruto.
“I’ll pay for his medical bills,” Naruto mumbled.
Minato sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose. “Why did you hit him?”
“Because he was being an asshole and deserved it. I’ll pay for his medical bills, but I won’t apologize.”
“That explains nothing, Naruto,” Minato reprimanded gently.
“I tried to apologize to him and he wouldn’t listen to me. He said that he never wanted to talk to me again. I…I got angry and hit him.”
“I see,” Minato mumbled. He clapped Naruto on the back and steered him by the shoulder towards the nurse who called his name. Kushina followed close behind, oddly silent.
A few x-rays later, a resetting of the broken bone, and a new cast; Naruto finally made it home. He knew he was in for it from his mother; she’d been far too quiet for far too long. What he wasn’t expecting was to see Itachi and his parents, waiting for their return.
“I think we need to have a talk,” Itachi started, standing up and pulling Naruto through to the dining room.
Naruto was told to sit, which he did, while Itachi remained standing.
“Answer my questions with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’, unless I ask you to explain further. Do you understand?” he started.
“Yeah,” Naruto mumbled.
“Are you dating Sakura?”
“What!” Naruto exclaimed, almost jumping from his seat.
“Sit!” Naruto sat down immediately, fixating on a spot on the table. “Yes or no?” Itachi continued.
“No.”
“Did you kiss her?”
Naruto inhaled. “Yes and no.”
“Explain.”
“She pounced on me and I pushed her away.”
“It was unwanted?”
“Yes.”
“Did you give my brother a black eye?” Itachi couldn’t stop his lips from curving into a smile.
“It’s bruising?” Naruto asked, shocked.
“I’ll take that as a yes then,” Itachi laughed. “Why did you hit him?”
“Because he was an ass and wouldn’t let me apologize for Friday. He said he didn’t want to talk to me ever again.”
“So you hit him.”
“After I got angry, yes,” Naruto whispered. “He saw me kissing Sakura, didn’t he?”
“He did.”
Naruto cried again, lowering his head in his hands. “I pushed her away this time, but I guess it wasn’t fast enough. I wanted to find him and tell him…but Sakura…she wanted to talk to me…I keep messing up!”
Itachi sighed and finally sat down.
“I love him so much,” Naruto whispered, choking on his tears.
Itachi exhaled. He wasn’t used to failure and he’d be damned if someone like Sakura Haruno would beat him. He would deal with her soon enough, but right now, the more pressing matter was Naruto and Sasuke and the ramifications of their fallout.
“We’ll fix this,” Itachi promised. But deep down he was worried. Sasuke wasn’t one to bend, no Uchiha was. This could be difficult.
