Lambs to the Slaughter – Chapter 6: The world keeps turning
---6:55 AM - 9/11/7875 ABT - Hokage Tower, Hokage's Office---
Danzo's sleep was a dreamless, peaceful experience. He thought if death was anything like it, he wouldn't be upset in the least.
He usually had nightmares, and had to endure the blood-soaked corpses of his victims calling him a monster in human form. He believed his acceptance of his new position was what allowed for him to ease his guilt.
Knowing that the village that he killed for and would die for was going to be continuing to thrive made him glad. The sacrifices of enemy, ally and targets were not in vain.
The light filtered through his eyelids, and he rolled to the left to avoid blinding himself before opening his eyes and seeing the portraits of his predecessors along the wall. It was a fitting sight to see on his first morning as Hokage.
The actual ceremony wouldn't take place for about a month, but he was already the Hokage legally and in function. The village couldn't be left ungoverned just because it needed to mourn after all.
Danzo sighed. He had truly liked the Third. Minato had always been a shining light for the village. First when he decided to be a ninja at 5 despite being an orphan. Most children would wait until the village couldn't offer them financial support anymore before deciding, but Minato decided that he would be a Ninja so that he could make sure some children were never orphaned.
When he started training he was frustrated at the lack of resources available to a 5 year old without a clan or any family at all. Thus he offered to become a subject for some experiments that made it out of the stage were lethality was the majority in exchange for some training.
Obviously this didn't happen often, but Orochimaru was giddy at the idea of showing the village how useful his inventions could be. When Minato showed the Hokage, Hiruzen, his use of Burst Step he was given a promotion on the spot. Danzo still remembered how Sarutobi started choking on the beef jerky vividly.
Now he was dead, and all because of such a minor mistake. Such was the life of a ninja.
Danzo picked his head up and prepared for his duties. First he picked up the new set of cloths he would wear while in office.
He wore a set of white, tightly fitting fibermail, which was a mesh similar in strength and design to chainmail but woven from an artificially developed plant. It provided a great balance of protection and mobility that made it standard issue for all Land of Fire troops other than Ninja who could choose different attire. It was among Orochimaru's most successful developments.
It was accented with small flame designs built into the mesh, and had a medium sized ruby inlaid into the base of the neck right below his chin. The ruby shone with a light resembling that of a camp fire, flickering and all. It was the symbol of the Hokage. Each of the other villages of note had a single symbol that identified it's leader.
During the peace talks after the first ninja war, the leaders agreed to make duplication or possession of a duplicate of one of the villages' namesakes would be punishable by death and destruction of the duplicate.
Konoha had its ruby. Kiri had a lava rock that seemed to leak a red mist. Kumo had a light blue stone that would not touch anything save the iron wire that allowed it to be worn as a necklace. Suna had a piece of amber containing a sapphire. Iwa had a tiny dust release cube in a stasis seal. Ame had an orb of water that seemed to swirl inwards indefinitely. Lastly Taki had a beetle made of hard water under a stasis seal.
All of the objects were to be worn around the neck of the leader as often as possible. It was considered so dishonorable to break the code that even when a leader was killed in battle the item was to be returned as soon as possible.
He dressed quickly and looked out the window overlooking the village. He considered if the village could afford a day of mourning briefly, but knew it would be a bad choice. Their last leader had just died, and despite being replaced so quickly by another legend they were disorganized.
This caused an issue that could be exploited if enemies decided to attempt infiltrations. Guard patterns were off, and they couldn't show weakness. The news would surely be spreading around soon, and after running through his options Danzo came to the ideal solution.
“Dark Crow, I have a mission for you.” Danzo said in a tone that betrayed nothing of his intentions. Shortly after he heard a thump as the masked ANBU dropped from his perch overlooking the room. It was an inside joke that the bird themed ANBU always got the job of guarding the Hokage and taking select missions and orders at a moment's notice.
The thump was also intentional. The ANBU were experts in their field, and landing silently would be easy for even the freshest recruit. It was done to show respect and assure that their full attention was on Danzo.
“We need to draw eyes off the village for a little while. It would certainly be horribly tragic if one of those crazy ROOT agents killed that shipping tycoon, Dashi Benkai, and left half his assets behind and business intact to take attention off us. I hope you don't accidentally mention this conversation right outside Gyuuniki's Steak House to a man dressed in black with a single red line tattooed on his left index finger.” Danzo said. If it sounded like he was blatantly telling his ANBU to leak information to his ROOT, it's because he was.
ROOT was a program invented by Danzo and officially disbanded about two weeks later after they failed a sanitation test on the kitchen. It then 'went rouge' and began doing missions that Konoha couldn't accept due to the 'kindhearted' nature of their village.
When an assassination on a child is traced to Konoha, ROOT did it. When someone needed to have the daughter of a political enemy raped, it was turned down by Konoha before a ROOT agent 'overhears' the request and offers to do it.
Konoha ended up getting a large number of requests from villages with no money because of the 'kindness' of their troops. Then when those villages got back on their feet, they ended up paying extra and giving Konoha first choice at any missions needed.
The tactic may not fool anyone with any military or political knowledge, but to desperate civilians they were the go-to village.
“It appears to be a slow day, why don't you leave for lunch early? I'd appreciate it if you could grab me a steak sandwich on the way back.” Danzo said casually. Ordering the death of a man may be a big deal to some, but to Danzo it was just another life sacrificed to ensure the village's safety.
---12:30 AM - 12/27/7875 ABT - High Point, Ame---
Two puffs of smoke signaled the arrival of Hanzo's two closest friends. Hiruzen, Danzo and Hanzo went way back. Back in the first war Hanzo's predecessor had opted to stay out of it, but Hanzo had went on a few undercover missions to find out which villages had the most potential.
After seeing the young Sarutobi succeed his teacher as the second Hokage at the age of twelve, Hanzo kept a close eye on him. About a year later Hiruzen and Danzo became known as Force Squared when they killed the first Kazekage in battle.
They then truly proved themselves as powerful ninja on their own when Sarutobi first killed the first Raikage with a well-timed explosive trap as he was in the bathroom.
Less than a week later, Hanzo personally watched Danzo killed the first Tsuchikage. While the man was well known for his ability to control hundreds of thousands of bees and could swarm entire platoons of troops in seconds, Danzo proved his counter when he sliced through every bee with inhuman accuracy before cleaving a chest wound into the man which destroyed function of both lungs.
With those two villages leaderless and the second Kazekage inexperienced, surrender was announced within the week.
Hanzo was a stealth and poison expert, and could have killed the two a few times. When the second war started up immediately after the disappearance of Old Uzu, who had refused to sell anything to nations other than Konoha and Kiri as well as let select ninja attempt to brave their dungeons, Kumo immediately struck Kiri like lightning. The village was in disarray, and Konoha was at a severe disadvantage.
Then his leader was approached with an offer from Konoha to sell drugs developed by their current scientists to enemy troops moving through and damage the effectiveness of the passing ninja, as well as hurt the enemies' economy and boost their own.
When the first leader of the village turned down their offer, Hanzo publicly challenged him to battle for the position of leader. Despite the man's doubts that winning was possible against the formidable Hanzo, he accepted to avoid looking like a weakling in front of his troops. As the words left his mouth Hanzo held a single hand sign and caused a toxin he placed within the man months ago to activate. His display of skill and forethought caused the troops to embrace his choice to accept the offer.
The war was quick like the first, taking only three years. The agreement he made caused many other small villages accept Konoha's offer, and soon enemy troops withdrawal on the battlefield. When the Second Tsuchikage and Kazekage grouped to invade Konoha in his country, he unleashed a wave of poison that caused the death of not only the leaders but about 1,500 troops.
The next day he heard that the Nanabi's Jinchuriki had walked straight into Kumo and destroyed even the mountain it was resting upon. While the Raikage and about 10,000 troops died in either the battle, the collapse of the mountain or the disease that followed Kumo was able to rebuild rather quickly, still having over 35,000 troops. They had been the biggest village before, and continued to have the highest number of troops to this day.
Later on, Danzo and Hiruzen visited him to talk of the war and peace treaties between the nations. They met in a bar near southern Land of Rocks and ended up in a bar-fight that destroyed the town and almost sparked another war.
The only reason it didn't was because none of the three had died, and all became fast friends. The alliance between the villages became Hanzo's saving grace when Orochimaru invented some odd medicine that allowed Hanzo to maintain the strength he had in his prime.
The reason for this meeting was appearance not a social call, considering the use of a messenger hawk bringing the request.
As the smoke cleared Hanzo's eyes widened briefly as he noticed the change in Danzo's attire. The jewel he wore was what made the biggest impression, because there was only one reason that he would be wearing it.
“My condolences for the loss of such a wonderful young man.” Hanzo said solemnly. He closed his eyes and did a moment of prayer as both a sign of respect and honest regret that he never got to meet with Minato.
“The life of the shinobi takes its toll on all of us. We simply must persevere and strive for a brighter tomorrow.” Danzo said in a grave tone. Hiruzen, who was next to him nodded and stroked his goatee in thought.
“Surprisingly optimistic words for you Danzo. You're usually quiet depressing.” Hiruzen said, but rather than using a joking tone as one might infer his voice was filled with question.
“I suppose that since I live in the light now I had to change a bit. From my position at the top of the tree that is Konoha I must embrace the light and help focus it onto those below me. Otherwise they'll never be able to replace us at the end of this winter of death. Perhaps they will be the ones to break the cycle of hate.” Danzo said. He himself seemed somewhat confused by the end of his speech.
“You really believe that the newest generation can bring a stop to war?” Hanzo asked dubiously.
“No. What do you take me for? An idiot?” Danzo asked rhetorically. When Hiruzen and Hanzo sighed openly his eye started twitching.
“Good, I thought you went senile.” Hiruzen said and Hanzo let out a bark of laughter in agreement. Danzo's eye twitched madly before all three of them burst out laughing simultaneously.
“I needed that.” Danzo said truthfully.
The three then shared some aged wine that Hanzo had hidden as a child and forgotten about until recently while eating fine cheese and bread. The would talk business tomorrow, today was a break that they all needed.
---3:21 AM - 5/22/7881 - Iwaya Kings' Hideout---
Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip.
The rhythmic sound echoed through the cavern where Obutsu the Sniper's base was located.
Obutsu had been an excellent long bowman that rose through the ranks at an astonishing pace. He was incredibly talented, and seemed like he could one day become the leader of the Land of Fire's Archer Corps.
That all changed quickly near the end of the Blood War.
His platoon was providing covering fire for a group of Samurai at the Strike on Koishi, a large Land of Rocks fortress stationing samurai, archers and shock troopers, when he spotted a fast moving drop tank heading further into the Land of Rocks.
He was the only archer capable of both keeping up with the vehicle and taking it down, so he took off in pursuit. When he returned from successfully destroying the tank and preventing a call for backup from going through he realized the cost of his recklessness.
A heavy tank had wiped out the samurai because his archers couldn't penetrate the hull, and therefore his troops were wiped out by a hailstorm of cannon fire.
When he was sentenced to five years of prison for abandonment of his platoon he snapped and broke out of the court. He later founded a group of bandits that had become a major problem of late.
The Cavern they had situated themselves in was well lit from spotlights that would prevent enemy archers from getting accurate shots while providing the defending archers clear sight of their prey. The entrance was too low to bring tanks in and opened up downwards in unevenly spaced stairs to make charging an effort in futility.
The passage leading to the base was also covered in a Chakra inhibiting seal matrix, so any attempts to get in with Genjutsu or blasting giant Ninjutsu wouldn't work.
At the bottom of the stairs was a wall made of wood covered in hardened clay. It was simple in construction yet highly effective at avoiding natural attacks, fire, napalm and other methods.
Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip.
The dripping continued, but was suddenly drowned out by a voice calling out through the cave from somewhere outside.
“I am a messenger sent at the Emperor's request. I don't wish for conflict, and am authorized to negotiate a potential deal.” the voice rung across the cave without a hint of fear or hesitation. This man was a professional messenger, much like the others the Emperor had sent before. They all left safely, as the code of not harming the messenger applied universally.
A few minutes of silence followed, and the dripping came back full force. Then footsteps faded into the mix and echoed around the cave with each step. Another voice, deeper and more guttural rang out in response.
“Come and sit on the red x. I have archers trained on you, so no funny business. I'll send a guard out to slap a few Chakra constricting cuffs on you and escort you in. Tell any guard to remain outside of the cave.”
A medium height and build man entered the cave and walked inwards at a casual pace. He was dressed in a bright orange robe with a deep red mail symbol on the back and front. The suit was worn to assure that messengers were easily identified, and therefore not targeted by anyone with a brain.
He walked in and saw the roughly carved staircase leading downwards about 60 feet. At the bottom was a large wall, so there was only about 10 feet of flat area between the stairs and door wall. The stairs seemed to be carved out of a light red stone, bordering pink. The edges were uneven and seemed sharp or rough at many points. At the bottom, near the area where the wall met the wall of the large cavern, was a red X painted on the ground.
The gate was about 25 feet away, making the width of the cavern taper from 70 feet at the wall to about 20 at the entrance. The wall was at least 45 feet tall, leaving about 10 feet of clearance with the roof, but the bright floodlights prevented the man from seeing any better detail.
After sitting on the X, which no doubt had metal detecting seals to avoid bringing in weapons, the man was greeted by a portly guard with a scar down the left of his face. It was an ugly dark wound, and brought attention to his misshapen nose and missing teeth.
The man placed some metal bracers on the messenger, and offered him a hand to get up. The messenger accepted politely and walked to the now open gate behind the man.
The messenger spotted Obutsu waiting to greet him, and after a nod of respect followed the man into a hut near the front of the rather extensive camp. It must have held at least 150 bandits.
“So, what business does our beloved Emperor have with us today?” the man asked in an unenthusiastic drawl, adding extra venom to the title of the messenger's leader.
“He has the following offer: Leave this country immediately or he will send a group of skilled ninja to destroy you.” the messenger said in a tone that was designed to avoid provoking a conflict. The bandit leader's face grew red with anger, and he quickly responded.
“You can tell him to suck my balls! Leave immediately... what's your name?” the man yelled, before remembering to get the messenger's name for future reference.
“You may call me Mighto Gai, and I didn't wish for this.” the messenger said before whipping a mace with a fiberglass handle and industrial diamond head and smashing the man's knee as he tried to use his Shadow Walk technique, which was a more advanced version of the Burst Step which concealed the new position with a brief darkness in the area.
As it was, the man's legs exploded as he attempted the intense movement. The darkness ended with his legs lying on the ground along a bloody trail from the chair to his bleeding stumps 15 feet away.
He let out a strangled scream that caused the guards outside the room to smash down the door and draw their bows, but they couldn't see the attacker and one rushed to help their hyperventilating leader. He got about halfway to him before the man dropped from the rafters that lined the top of the room and landed on his partner's shoulders.
The assailant wrapped his knees around the man's neck and twisted forward, resulting in a loud snap to reverberate through the room. As the archer turned and drew his bow, a spiked mace head slammed into his face and crushed his skull.
The messenger ripped off his cloak and revealed to be wearing black fibermail with the leaf village's symbol on his chest and upper arms. He pulled a lock-pick from his belt and the constricting bracers fell from his forearms shortly after.
He picked up his mace and pulled a second one off his belt before crossing his arms and closing his eyes briefly.
“Sixth Gate of Wonder, Release!” yelled the man as his eyes snapped open, revealing them to be pure white. The irises and pupils were hidden, and the entire eyeballs brightened to an almost glowing white.
His body was quickly covered in a wave of Chakra, but with the nearly 20:1 ratio of physical chakra to spiritual the coloration changed from blue to a deep green.
A burst of air caused the wooden shack he was in to exploded and a green blur struck into the wall as it exploded outwards. The dripping suddenly turned into a downpour and the entrance flooded as the liquid poured inwards.
It was revealed to be flammable as a match was thrown onto the cascading river and the cave burst into a hell storm. The chakra emanating from the green man's body caused any fire to visibly avoid him. He turned inwards and burst through the camp as he ripped the disorganized defenses apart.
A group ran to the secret exit in the back, and detonated the false wall to escape. As they did the saw a man with white hair framing his face standing before them. He wore a black hood over his head and a mask covered his lover face. A leaf headband proudly rested on his brow, and his dark green camouflage pants and vest covered a wiry body with thin but well-defined muscles.
“Hahahaha, you're so screwed. Prey that whatever god you believe in is merciful, for the Three Judges will not be!”He laughed lightly before narrowing his eyes into a dangerous gaze and finished darkly.
“Fateweaver Kakashi! Oh god!” one of the bandits yelled before drawing his Katana and yelling to charge. While the other bandits showed hesitance, they knew this was their only opportunity to escape alive.
However as soon as they stepped out of the cave they were ripped apart by some invisible blades. This was Fateweaver Kakashi's style, he would fill tiny threads with his special White Chakra, allowing them to be easily visible to him and sharper than steel to his foes.
A few archers drew their bows to kill the man before them before two wicked metal disks flew by and decapitated the outer two. As they returned they bisected an obese man with a longbow, leaving him screaming at the top of his lungs at an unnatural pitch.
He grabbed at his organs as they fell from his gut onto the floor, and his eyes glazed over as the fire drew nearer such that the light reflected in a dazzling and horrifying picture.
The last three archers finished drawing their bows and let arrows fly, but another man recognizable as Obito the Holy Defender landed in front of him and extended his hands. A wall of translucent blue shields phased into existence a split second before him before the arrows connected.
The arrows flew through the shield as if it wasn't there and struck Kakashi in the head, heart and left lung. As the impacted however, they became immaterial blue light before disappearing in a phase effect and appearing in the attacker's bodies. Two fell to the ground immediately before the last began coughing up blood, he died shortly after.
There were five samurai remaining, but they had all destroyed their weapons or arms attempting to cut through the Threads of Fate Kakashi was famous for. Soon a figure landed in the center of their group and pulled a pair of Chakrams covered in additional jagged blades from her back.
She spun so quickly that one would question if she had moved before the area exploded into blood. The men were ripped apart by the brutal assault of The Vengeful Angel Rin, spraying blood across her and the ground.
She lifted her head and smiled into the cavern as the green form of their temporary teammate burst from the flaming wreckage of the camp. A smile graced her face, providing a confusing expression when the blood-soaked weapons and clothing were taken into account.
“Good to see you were successful Gai. I take it there were not complications?” She asked genitally.
“No, my manly flames took them by surprise and left them no chance to defend! The actual surprise helped as well! It's great to see my good friends training so hard! You may become as manly as me one day!” Gai proclaimed. It couldn't be defined as anything less than a proclamation, as the pure passion and energy from the man before them was astounding.
“I have my cute little god-son returning soon, and I'll be damned if anyone teaches him but my team.” Kakashi said while Obito and Rin nodded while Rin muttered under her breath about being fine as she was.
She was dating Obito, she didn't need any more crazy in her life.
The team returned to their village to report the successful mission and collect payment. The Three Judges would keep training, so they could protect their godson from anything.
They wouldn't let their teacher down; his son would be safe.

Well, College is a time-sink. I had a hard time updating, but I think I'm getting used to my schedule now and can update more frequently now.
I finished up the Konoha side of things here, because I doubt you want to spend a bunch of time hearing about policies and such.
I also included the last part because of a few reasons.
1- I wanted to give my readers a taste of the fights heading their way. If you have suggestions on things you would like to change pertaining to them, feel free to tell me. I still would like to hear your reasoning in that case.
2-It shows once again that combat is tricky, and Ninja are specialized as fuck. Gai is an expert at entering situations like this and wreaking the place from the inside. Also note that he did need the fire and to kill the leader first. He would have been wreaked if he tried to fight all those bandits when they were organized.
3-The characters have been changed a bit her too. Rin didn't die, nor did Obito. Kakashi obviously doesn't have Obito's eye. Gai is slightly more serious, and screams about manliness instead of youth. Think of a smaller Alex Armstrong from FMA and you'll have Gai. He's an orphan though, so he won't be yelling about his family.
4-There is a weakness to most moves. The Shadow Walk failed because of Obutsu's broken leg. At that point Gai went to other targets because the fire would kill him anyways.
5- Other things you may have picked up on but I don't feel like writing out now. I have a purpose in what I write, so read underneath the underneath.
Lastly, to anyone who wants to flame me: Just log in. I'll gladly listen to your arguments if you want to log in and stand by them. Show some logic, and don't bitch about this being gross because I've given plenty of warning.
Thanks for reading,
