Chapter 6Naruto gasped as he bent over, leaning on his knees. He looked up at the staircase like stone gate. Just as he passed its entrance his path was blocked by a shinobi fully dressed in black with a red sash around their waist. The shinobi stood with his arms crossed and was staring sternly at Naruto. To say he was surprised by this person’s sudden appearance would be an understatement. Ignoring the shinobi's stern expression, Naruto grinned at him anyway.
“You're late. Though he doesn't show it, he's been worried.” Kankuro growled.
“Ah sorry. Was caught up in a mission.” Naruto apologized while rubbing the back of his head.
“Hmm.”
“What?” Naruto frowned.
“Kankuro, cut it out.”
Naruto looked behind Kankuro and saw Temari walking up to them.
“Hi Temari!” Naruto smiled and ignored Kankuro, who was grummbling something about woman.
Temari didn’t let it go though.
“Oh shut up. It's your own fault. All you have to do is apologize to her, idiot.” Temari scoffed.
Naruto frowned and looked from Temari to Kankuro.
“Um. Guys?” Naruto asked nervously.
After smacking Kankuro upside the head, Temari smiled at Naruto and gestured for him to follow her. Naruto hesitated and looked at a still grumbling Kankuro, who was now holding his head.
“Don't worry about that idiot. He's just upset because he was dumped not too long ago.” Temari gestured for Naruto to follow again.
Kankuro finally snapped out of his grumbling stupor.
“What the hell! You’re calling me an idiot. What about you?” Kankuro shouted at Temari, who has tensed. “You’re in the same boat as me. The roles are just reversed!"
Before Naruto could blink, Temair had Kankuro slammed up against the stone gate. Naruto's eyes widened. He had never seen Temari like this before.
“While that may be,” Temari growled in Kankuro's face. “At least she was willing to transfer here!”
What the hell is going on?
Kankuro looked away from his sister’s infuriated face. This seemed to snap Temari out of her enraged state. Naruto expected her to just drop Kankuro to the ground. Instead she suddenly embraced him. Naruto thought his eyes were going to pop out of his head.
Ok. I really don't understand woman.
Interesting. Especially since you have the same interest as most of them.
Hey! That's uncalled for!
It’s true none the less.
Why is it that the first thing you ever say has to be mean!?
Hmm. Because it's so fun to tease you.
What!?
And you're so easy to tease.
I swear someday—someday I will get you.
Ooh is that a promise?
Naruto blushed and only turned redder when he heard Kurama laugh. Why had that damn fox have to say it like that? Like they were flirting or something?
Because I live to tease you. Especially since I will always know what you're thinking.
Damn you.
Kurama laughed again.
Naruto decided it would be best to ignore the incorrigible fox. But judging by the stares he was getting from Kankuro and Temari he had decided too late. He blushed again. He hated getting caught lost in his conversations with Kurama.
“Guess you can talk with your bijuu?” Temari smiled.
Naruto gulped, unsure how to respond.
“Don't looked so scared. Gaara used to do the same thing.” Kankuro said while scratching his chin.
“Anyway. We really need to be heading back before Gaara realizes we're—”
Sand suddenly began to form around all three of them. The sand lifted them off the ground and flew them over the village. The sand was not completely sealed so they were able to see the village from above. Naruto was always amazed when Gaara did this because it felt like he was flying. Though he had a feeling to Gaara it was quite normal for him. And judging by Temari and Kankuro's lack of amazement they were used to it no doubt as well. Which made him wonder if he had done this for Lee yet. Naruto was sure Lee would love it.
Gaara was already waiting for them atop the Kazekage building. Gaara was staring at Naruto with his arms across his chest as usual.
Crap. He knows.
Without saying anything, Gaara made his way back inside the building. Obviously expecting for them to follow. Naruto sighed and followed after a grumbling Kankuro. Naruto had a feeling that this would be an interesting visit. First a moody Kankuro, a pissed Temari, and now an impatient Gaara. So much for being able to relax a little after his mission.
When they got to Gaara's office only Gaara went in, while Kankuro and Temari quickly continued passed it. Naruto frowned at their fleeing backs. He supposed they didn't want to have to deal with an upset Gaara. He sighed and made his way into his friends office. Gaara was already sitting at his desk and watched as Naruto made his way in.
“Ah Gaara I’m sorry for being late. You see I—”
“Happy Birthday Naruto.” Gaara stated, interrupting Naruto.
Not expecting for that to be the first thing Gaara would say he was suddenly embarrassed. He couldn't help but smile weakly and rub the back of his neck.
“Ah. Yeah. Thank you.” Naruto mumbled.
Nodding, Gaara looked pointedly at the chair set before his desk. Taking the hint Naruto went ahead and took the offered seat. He wasn't sure what was going on in Gaara's head—not that he ever could really tell. While he had changed a lot for the better he was still as quiet about himself as before.
Well except for when it comes to Lee.
“Naruto,” Gaara said, interrupting Naruto's thoughts. “You were explaining why you were late. But what I would like to know is why you left Konoha in the first place.”
Straight to the point as always.
Naruto leaned forward in his chair and his azure eyes met teal ones.
“I did not run away.” Naruto continued, ignoring Gaara's raised brow. “I have come to Suna for my birthday for the past three to four years. Also I was given mission prior to his return.”
Gaara stared at him without uttering a sound. The silent tension in the office seemed to grow.
Naruto leaned back in his chair and tried to focus on Gaara. Why did he suddenly look so blurry? Confused, he tried to rub his eyes to clear away their blurriness.
Naruto?
"Naruto?"
Gaara and Kurama called out to him at the same time.
Unsure who to answer first he began to respond aloud. At least until he felt his eyes begin to roll back and grains of sand encircle his body.
Then everything suddenly went black.
Naruto looked around and then stared at the flooded floor.
“Well I haven't been here for a while.” He said softly.
“What did you expect, you fool!? You exhausted yourself.” Kurama growled suddenly.
Naruto turned around and found himself nose to muzzle with Kurama. Naruto backed up a little so he wouldn't accidently kiss the fox.
“I passed out, didn't I?” Naruto asked and winced when Kurama only hissed at him.
Naruto rubbed the back of his neck and kicked at the water at his feet. He had not meant to exert himself so much. He had just wanted to get to Suna as quick as he could. He had promised Gaara last year that he would be coming. Naruto never went back on his word and he certainly wasn’t going to start now. Even if it seemed trivial to others.
“Sorry. It’s just—”
“I know, kit. I know.” Kurama sighed. “I just wish you would be more careful sometimes. Even the simplest things like hunger can kill you if you’re not careful.”
Feeling guilty Naruto could only nod. Kurama must have been really worried since Naruto had been so exhausted he couldn’t even talk to him till now. Which made Naruto worry about Gaara’s own reaction to his passing out. And on his own birthday no less! Naruto sighed. He probably overdid it this time. After all he can’t keep any of his promises if he were dead.
“Kurama.” Naruto called softly.
“Yes Naruto. What is it?” Kurama asked, his brow wrinkled.
“You don’t believe I ran, do you?” Naruto asked, finally looking Kurama in his eye.
Kurama stared at him for a second before his eye crinkled. Kurama shook his head and chuckled.
“No Naruto. I know that you didn’t run away.” Kurama smiled. “I am part of you after all. You nor I can hide anything from each other. No matter how irritating that can be sometimes.”
Naruto blinked at Kurama for a second and his lips quivered. Then he was suddenly laughing and grabbing at his waist. Kurama huffed and shook his head not worried anymore.
“So how long do you plan to sleep?” Kurama asked, interrupting Naruto’s laughter.
Cut off mid-laugh, Naruto was still bent over holding his waist when he looked at Kurama.
“Sleep?” Naruto frowned. “How long have I been out?”
“Three days.” Kurama said flatly. “That is, including the day you got here.”
Silence ensued. All that could be heard was the occasional drip of water. Naruto stared at the water surrounding the floor. It had been three days. He had been asleep for three days. While technically he had kept his promise to Gaara, he had only been asleep for his visit so far. Not including his run in with Temari and Kankuro.
“I need to wake up.” Naruto muttered.
Kurama hummed in agreement.
Naruto closed his eyes and took a deep breath—getting ready to breach his subconscious stasis.
“Oh and Naruto.”
Naruto peek at Kurama.
“Just tell Gaara the truth.” Kurama closed his eyes and rested his head back on his large paws. “He’ll believe you.”
Naruto smiled and fisted his hand.
“Right.”
Naruto groaned and wiggled in the bed he was laying in.Wait…bed?
Naruto’s eyes shot open, only for him to wince and shut his eyes against the piercing light. He suddenly felt the light dim from behind his closed eye lids. Cautiously he tried to open his eyes again. At first he couldn’t quite tell what was going on since his eyes were still blurry from sleep. His vision cleared when he began to blink.
Hovering above his head was a small dome arch of sand blocking the light that had blinded him. Naruto tensed and began to search for the sands owner in the room. Looking around he realized he was in the Suna hospital. He remembered it from when he had come here and witnessed Sakura’s development as a medical-nin. The room had a large window, allowing him to see how the village looked underneath the moon.
He found Gaara standing in the doorway of the room. He couldn’t see Gaara’s face thanks to the sand dome in his own face. But he would recognize his friend’s crimson coat and gourd anywhere. When Gaara didn’t move away from the doorway Naruto began to worry. He understood that Gaara was probably pretty upset with him but he hadn’t expected to be ignored. He hated being ignored damnit. Thinking of no other way he decided to break the silence.
“I’m sorry Gaara.” Naruto sighed. “I just really needed to make it here by my birthday. I promised didn’t I? And I never—”
“You never go back on your word.” Gaara said suddenly, interrupting Naruto.
As Gaara slowly made his way over to the still prostrate Naruto the sand slowly crumbled away. When Gaara reached his side all the sand was gone and he could finally see Gaara’s face. Naruto searched his face. He didn’t seem angry but Gaara hardly ever changed his stoic expression. Unless of course his emotions were severely intense.
Or if it has something to do with Lee.
Gaara sighed, shook his head and crossed his arms over his chest. Naruto suddenly felt relieved. He couldn’t help but grin sheepishly at his friend. Deciding he had enough of laying down, Naruto pushed his arms against the bed to sit up. When he felt his left arm give way, sand wrapped around his arms and shoulders to pull him up into a sitting position. He looked at Gaara and nodded his thanks.
“So I’ve been asleep for three days huh?” Naruto groaned and stretched his arms.
“Your inner clock tell you this?” Gaara asked, his right brow raised.
“More like inner fox to be exact.” Naruto grinned.
“Right. Well you picked a great time to decide to wake up.” Gaara chided, pointing towards the window. “As you can see it is already night time. You won’t find many awake around this time.”
“Except for you?”
“And some late night taverns and bars.” Gaara added.
“I wouldn’t mind a drink right now.” Naruto mumbled to himself.
When he looked away from the window to ask Gaara if he could have something to eat, he caught Gaara staring at him.
“What?” Naruto frowned.
“You drink?”
Shit.
Naruto held back a wince and scratched at the back of his head in nervousness.
“Sometimes.” He blushed. “When I felt I needed it.”
Both of Gaara’s brows rose and he blinked.
“Ah! But I would only drink at home of course.” Naruto said quietly.
“Of course?” Gaara frowned. “Why only at home?”
You idiot! Why did you open your big mouth?!
Naruto almost wined when Gaara only continued to stare at him.
This should be g-o-o-d. Kurama chuckled suddenly.
Of course you would enjoy this.
I am not the one who put his foot in his mouth so of course I’m enjoying this.
Man I really don’t want to tell him.
Well doesn’t look like you’ve got much of a choice.
Naruto looked at Gaara, who was still staring at him, and almost groaned.
Looks like it. Naruto sighed. Well I have yet to die from embarrassment so far, here goes nothing.
Kurama chuckled again.
Ignoring the fox Naruto cleared his throat.
“Um. Well. Gaara do you remember when you decided to take Lee out for a drink for his birthday the year you two got together?” Naruto asked nervously.
Gaara tensed for a moment but then nodded.
“Well then let’s just say I have a similar reaction when I drink.”
“You become a drunken fist too?” Gaara asked in surprise.
“Um. No, not exactly.” Naruto blushed. “I react a little differently but almost with the same…um. Intensity.”
Gaara frowned.
“So you don’t become a drunken fist. But you do react strongly?” Gaara asked.
“Yes.” Naruto said, hoping Gaara would let it go.
He had no such luck.
“So what do you do then?” Gaara asked, taking the seat at Naruto’s bedside.
“Um. Well. I—that is. I…”
Naruto could feel the blood rushing to his face.
Oh man. Don’t make me say it buddy.
Gaara continued to stare at him. He looked so interested in what happened to Naruto when he drank that Naruto couldn’t fault him for it. Having Gaara look interested in anything was like looking at a kid in a sweets shop. Naruto groaned. He was really going to have to spell it out for Gaara. Because as smart and as cool as Gaara was Naruto didn’t think he wouldn’t get it otherwise. Not something like this, especially from what he could remember from his conversations with Lee.
Why? WHY?! Why did I open my mouth!?
Naruto tensed really hard from holding in his scream of frustration and embarrassment. Then he took a really deep breath and his shoulders sagged in defeat.
“This first time I drank was when I was studying with Jiraiya. I think I was fourteen. Anyway the place we went to wasn’t just a bar it happened to also be a brothel.” Naruto sighed. “Of course at the time I didn’t realize that. Which is why I was so confused with why the women were dressed so—so revealingly.”
“Anway. Jiraiya gave me some sake saying that he just wanted me to try some. ‘Just a taste’ is what he said.” Naruto groaned. “Well I thought it was juice or something so I gulped it down. Which freaked out Jiraiya at first but when it looked like I was ok he let it go. That is until I started to feel a little funny.” Naruto scoffed and rubbed his check.
“Funny? You felt funny?” Gaara asked.
“Yeah. Aside from the sake tasting really gross at first I started to feel funny. I could feel my pulse begin to pick up. I started to breath really hard. I thought I was going to die!”
Naruto closed his eyes and rested his forehead in his palms.
“Then I could feel my body tense and my stomach ache and tighten at the same time. Before I knew it Jiraiya picked me up and he was racing us back to our hotel room. He dropped me onto the futon yelling and asking me what was wrong. Saying something about me dying young would bring back Kushina to haunt me.” Naruto chuckled. “I didn’t realize at the time who he had been talking about.”
“I told him that I didn’t know what was wrong but that I felt like my heart was going to leap out of my chest. Which freaked him out even more. He said that maybe I was too hot or something so I tried to remove my clothes. But with how bad I felt I could barely move. So he started to help me. Well until he got to my pants that is.”
Naruto could feel his palms warm from the heat of his face.
“He jumped back so quickly he fell on his ass. Scared I asked him what was wrong but he wasn’t looking at my face. I followed where he was looking and saw that he was staring at my pants. It was then that I realized why it hurt so much. It looked like something was trying to make its way out of me which only freaked me out more. By then I was moaning from the pain and ache exhausting my body. Before I could say anything Jiraiya suddenly left but when he came back he didn’t come back alone.”
Naruto could still remember how scared he had been that Jiraiya had finally decide to abandon him. He was glad that hadn’t been the case. Sometimes he wish that what had happened had never happened. Yet at the same time, Naruto felt that what Jiraiya did next somehow showed that he really did care about Naruto—no matter how weird and embarrassing it was.
“Jiraiya had come back with a woman. She was wearing a dark blue and crimson yukata—which made her pale face, ebony eyes and short blue black hair stand out. She was very pretty.” Naruto blushed but continued. “Jiraiya told me that he had spoken to her about me and she knew what to do to help me. He also told me not to worry—that he had known her and her mother since she was a child so Jiraiya trusted her to help me. Then he left. I still lay on the futon in pain when she kneeled beside me. She smiled and told me that her name was Saki. She also told me that I would not die from what I was going through. That I would be ok but she would have to help me do something to make the pain go away.”
Naruto pushed his forehead harder into his sweaty palms.
“I assumed she was going to give me some kid of medicine so I agreed. Then she began to finish removing my clothes the rest of my clothes—and I mean all of my clothes. I tried to get away from her but she told me that in order to help me she was going to have to touch me. Completely naked in front of her I tried my best to remain calm. But that flew out the window when she—when she…”
Oh my god I’m gonna pop a vein.
“When she what Naruto?” Gaara asked, making Naruto jump.
“Well she… She grabbed. Um, you know.”
Naruto gestured towards his crotch area. Making sure not to look at Gaara.
“Well I’m pretty sure I screamed. Without letting me go she whispered into my ear telling me that I was going to be ok. That what was happening was normal and if I still wanted to know afterwards, she would explain it to me. Of course, it was really hard to pay attention to what she was saying when she kept rubbing and whispering in my ear. Before I knew it I had given up and let her do whatever it was that she was doing. That is until I started freaking out again. I suddenly felt like I was going to run out of breath and my heart was going to jump out of my chest. When she started to whisper in my ear again I completely lost it and passed out.”
Naruto subtly wiped and the small stream of blood that had dripped from his nose.
Even just remembering it is making my heart race.
“When I woke up she was sitting beside me and smiled at me when she noticed I had woken up. That was when I realized I was dressed again and was not aching anymore. I shot up and asked her what the hell happened. Which she explained in painstaking detail.” Naruto groaned. “Apparently what Jiraiya and she figured was that I get a-a-aroused when I drink. Add that with being underage and having gulped it down, it increased the affect. She said that in order to get rid of my, um, state I had to relieve the ache. So she had to st-stimulate my, well you know, in order for me to relieve it. She then explained the numerous other ways that I can do so. Which I am not going to repeat. So there you go that’s why I can’t drink except for when I’m alone!”
Naruto kept taking deep breaths to calm his heart. And his slight state of arousal.
Oh man. I really don’t want to see his reaction.
Naruto already knew that Gaara was familiar with some of what Naruto had told just him—thanks to a blushing Lee. He understood now, how Lee had felt when he’d made Lee explain why he’d suddenly blushed one day when he mentioned something about Gaara. Naruto’s anxiety increased when he realized that Gaara had yet to say anything. Though he was afraid to look he just had to see Gaara’s reaction.
When he finally removed his hands from his face and looked up, he found Gaara staring at him. He was still seated beside Naruto’s bed, only now his right leg rested on his left, and he was leaning back in his chair. Naruto bit his lip and tried to examine his friend’s reaction and position. At first it didn’t look as Gaara had any reaction at all. That was until Naruto realized that Gaara’s cheeks had a very slight pink tinge that was almost unnoticeable. Then he wondered why Gaara had moved his leg atop the other. He had never seen him sit like that before.
Oh my god! He’s got turned on. Oh shit. Lee’s gonna kill me!
Gaara cleared his throat.
“Naruto you didn’t have to tell me the whole story if it was going to embarrass you this much.” Gaara said calmly.
“What?! But you wouldn’t drop it. And besides how am I supposed to tell you that without being embarrassed.” Naruto gasped.
“Simple.”
Naruto glared at Gaara.
“You could have just said I drink home alone because it gives me an erection.” Gaara said passively.
Naruto’s jaw dropped at Gaara’s passive tone. Had he heard his friend correctly?
“Um excuse me, what?!”
Gaara sighed.
“Drinking boosts your libido. So?” Gaara sighed again. “Have you ever attacked anyone because of it?”
“No. But wait. Wait. How are you so indifferent towards talking about this?” Naruto asked in shock.
“Why should I be uncomfortable?” Gaara shrugged. “It’s a part of human and animal nature. You shouldn’t be embarrassed either.”
Then Gaara frowned at him.
“Well, maybe giving as much detail about it as you did, might be cause for embarrassment though.”
Naruto felt his mouth fall open again.
“GAARA!”
Gaara nodded and signaled for Naruto to calm down.
“Never mind, forget that. Setting that conversation aside I wanted to ask you something.”
“What?” Naruto asked in worry.
“Well the woman, Saki.”
“What about her?” Naruto asked blushing.
“You said you thought she was pretty. And she was also appealing enough for you to—”
“I get it ok!” Naruto interrupted. “What about it?”
“Well she doesn’t match Sakura’s description at all. But she does remind me of someone.”
Naruto suddenly realized where Gaara was going with this. The only two people that knew about the person he loved were Kurama and Sakura. It was also something he had begun to realize himself when he remembered his reaction to Saki a couple of years back. Even though he had never met her before there was something about her that had reminded him of someone. It wasn’t until he had asked Sakura about her feelings for Ino that he had begun to realize his own feelings. Feelings that signified he was in love with someone of the same sex. Which of course Sakura had socked him for getting worried about when she was the same. While he let that go, he couldn’t let go of the fact that he loved someone who he had a feeling would never be able to feel the same way for him.
Naruto debated whether he should tell Gaara about it or not. It had been something he had debated about ever since he had realized his feelings. He knew that Gaara was his friend through thick and thin. Hell they were practically brothers! Yet he always hesitated. He didn’t want to be rejected by Gaara or disappoint him either. He was a friend that he just couldn’t lose. Not like he had lost Jiraiya or Sasuke. He couldn’t lose someone as important as that again.
“Naruto.” Gaara said softly. Interrupting Naruto’s inner turmoil.
“Yeah?”
“Do you remember when we celebrated my birthday in Konoha two years ago?” Gaara asked.
“Yeah that was when you and Lee got together.” Naruto smiled.
Gaara reciprocated his smile and nodded.
“Yes. I did not understand what I was feeling at the time and almost lost my chance.” Gaara stared at Naruto. “If it had not been for your help I would not know the happiness I have with Lee now.”
Naruto smiled. He understood what Gaara was saying. Deciding to stop hiding he came out with it.
“I’m in love with Sasuke.” Naruto declared.
Naruto was trying to catch his breath when another ball of sand was headed for him. Quickly sliding to the right he dodged, only to get hit by another coming from a different direction. He tried to blink away the sweat running down his forehead and into his eyes. He made sure not to rub at his eyes while covered in sand. He had learned to not do so the hard way and refused to repeat the painful experience. He looked up and found his opponent in the sky, standing atop a cloud of sand. Naruto could counter the long range attacks by going into bijuu mode but he’d rather not.
Why not? You could let me talk to Gaara. Kurama said suddenly.
What for? Besides, I can’t let him SEE you! No one knows about that yet.
I didn’t mean that way. I meant to talk to him through you.
Like I said. What fo—Shit!
Naruto was just able to dodge a massage ball of sand. Look like he upset Gaara by not paying attention. Ignoring Kurama’s whining, Naruto quickly performed the necessary hand signs for his next move.
“Kage Bunshin no Jutus!”
Hundreds of Narutos appeared and began to make a ladder out of each other. Several Narutos quickly made their way up the human ladder to Gaara’s sand cloud. The clones acting as a ladder were not too far behind. Clones were being defeated by the dozen as Gaara created sand bullets and shot them. Gaara had to suddenly divide his attention as he was attacked by five Narutos head on.
Naruto swung at Gaara who dogged quickly and swung back at Naruto. Blocking his swing, Naruto side flipped and kicked at Gaara. Only to hit sand. Gaara defended himself against the now three attacking Narutos. Swirling his hand, Gaara slashed at the Naruto to his left with a blade of sand and it popped into a cloud. One Naruto made a jab at Gaara while the other dropped and kicked at his feet. As Gaara flipped backwards he aimed a kick at the Naruto who had jabbed at him.
Naruto swatted away Gaara’s foot and reached for the other to grab it but missed. He quickly pulled out several shuriken and threw them at Gaara. The shuriken embedded in a wall of sand before they could hit Gaara. There as a sudden hissing sound coming from a paper bomb attached to one of the shuriken’s. Gaara quickly thickened his wall of sand just the bomb exploded.
Gaara looked up towards the sky when he heard a familiar swirling sound. He was just able to cocoon himself in his sand as the Rasenshuriken would have hit. He hardened his cocoon and listened for Naruto’s next move. Too bad he hadn’t had enough time to leave out his eye to view from the outside. Suddenly there was the whirling sound again and the sand in front of him began to crack. He quickly added more chakra and sand to the crack. There was another crack from behind him.
Just as he was done fixing the crack in the sand his fit shook as the floor slowly started to crack. Just as he looked and held his hand out to fix it, the top of his cocoon was suddenly crushed open. Unable to keep its shape the sand cocoon fell apparent just as Naruto’s Odama Rasengan was just before his face. Then just as it was suddenly there it disappeared. Naruto laughed and wrapped his arm around Gaara’s neck to put him in a playful headlock.
“Woo! I’m tired.” Naruto gasped. “What about getting something to eat?”
Gaara couldn’t help but chuckle at Naruto’s quick transition from sparring mode to his usual playful one. But that was just one of the many great qualities that Naruto had.
Knowing Naruto he would want ramen. How he could eat so much of it was beyond Gaara. He frowned when Naruto suddenly became quiet. Worried he was passed out again, Gaara looked up at Naruto from his still head locked position. He chuckled. He shouldn’t have worried—the dummy was giving him a puppy dog look, as if Gaara hadn’t known what Naruto would want to eat. He pushed at Naruto’s arm to let him know he wanted out of the headlock. Naruto let him go but didn’t stop giving him that stupid puppy dog look. And was now also hopping about. Gaara rolled his turquoise colored eyes at his friend’s antics.
“I know already. Calm down or you’re going to fall off before we get there.”
Naruto grabbed onto Gaara again before he could even protest.
“Woo-hoo! Nothing like eating ramen after a nice good exercise.” Naruto hummed excitedly.
Gaara sighed but smiled nonetheless. His sand cloud began to leave the Sand Sea and take them back to his village, all the while Naruto kept talking about ramen. He doubted the day would ever come where Naruto would stop loving ramen. Gaara guessed Naruto was destined to love ramen as much as he did. Otherwise why be named Naruto?
Later elsewhere…He stared at her. Trying to process everything that he was told the moment he stepped into her office. He had not expected to hear anything like this on the night of his return. While his body had been exhausted from his journey from the Hidden Cloud, he felt pretty wide awake now. She had even told him that since it was so late it would be best to leave seeing him till tomorrow. But how? After hearing about all this he couldn’t just not see him!
At the back of his mind he knew she was right about waiting, seeing as it was really late. Two in the morning late that is. He had originally planned to just head to his apartment to sleep then report in, in the morning. For some reason though he had felt he shouldn’t put it off. Now he understood why.
I still can’t believe he’s back.
Kakashi looked away from Tsunade to stare out the moon lit night. Tsunade tensed seeing his eyes suddenly sharpen before he looked at her once again.
“I’m going to see him.” Kakashi declared.
Tsunade sighed knowing that she couldn’t really stop him from going to see his ex-student. Hell even if she were to lock him up for the night she was pretty sure he’d find some way to get out. She really did not want to deal with any of this at the moment. The only reason they were even talking was because she had stayed at the office much later than she had expected. She needed a drink then sleep. Exactly in that order.
“Right.” She sighed. “He’s probably asleep right now though. He’s been working pretty hard but you might be able to talk with the anbu that’s with him.”
“Tired from what? I thought you said he was on probation?” Kakashi’s brow wrinkled.
“Oh if you talk to the anbu you’ll find out.” Tsunade smirked.
She began to head out of her office but stopped short just before leaving. She glanced at Kakashi who had not yet moved from his spot.
“Ah. Also if he tells you make sure to keep it to yourself.”
Kakashi’s wrinkle deepened and he made his way over to her.
“Not many are informed about what he has been doing.” She finished and began to make her way to the Hokage residence.
What the hell?
Kakashi quickly closed her office door and went in search of Sasuke. Tsunade had said he was living in the apartment set up for him by Naruto. Apparently whoever had been assigned to Sasuke now was living with him as well. Or at least that was how Tsunade had made it sound. The damn woman had also made sure not to tell him who was the anbu watching over Sasuke now. It worried him after having also been told what had happened with the first anbu.
Damn Iguru.
Shaking his head he decided to let it go. It happened and now Sasuke was apparently doing better according to Tsunade. But to make sure Kakashi wanted to see for himself. Also he was curious as to what Tsunade had Sasuke doing that would be tiring him. If he was on probation he shouldn’t be able to go on missions. While Kakashi had heard of a small few of nukenin’s reforming it wasn’t very often. Nor had they committed such crimes as the ones Sasuke had.
As he jumped from roof to roof Kakashi also wondered how Naruto was doing. While Tsunade had said he had left without even seeing Sasuke, he knew that Naruto must have done so for a reason. When he got back Kakashi was going to make sure to find out what that reason was. He wondered if Sakura had gone to see Sasuke just yet. Tsunade had said something about them seeing each other while Sasuke was still a girl.
Kakashi shivered.
Still think that’s weird.
He paused on the roof of the building next to Sasuke’s apartment building. He gathered his thoughts before jumping over. He wanted to keep his mind set as logical as possible so he wouldn’t judge the anbu based on Iguru’s actions. Especially if he was helping Sasuke. Just as he was about to jump over he noticed something—someone making their way up the back of the building. It had to be someone quite skilled in stealth because Kakashi hadn’t noticed him until he was already reaching Sasuke’s balcony. Someone opened the balcony door to let whoever it was in.
Swearing, Kakashi quickly jumped over and landed on the balcony just as the two were heading in. He drew his kunai and threw it at the two figures halfway inside Sasuke’s apartment. Both ducked just before being hit. The kunai made a thud as it hit something inside Sasuke’s apartment.
Where the hell is the anbu whose supposed to be watching Sasuke!?
Before Kakashi could draw another kunai someone suddenly busted out of one of the rooms.
Finally some help!
At least that’s what he thought before whoever it was stood beside the two figures in alliance. Suddenly the new person started to launch himself at Kakashi, when he was suddenly yanked back by one of the others. Kakashi thought he was going to be attacked by all three when one of the shadowed figures spoke.
“Go turn on the light.” He sighed. “I have a feeling this has been a misunderstanding.”
Misunderstanding? I feel like I know that voice.
One of the persons, Kakshi had a feeling it was the one who had scaled the wall, went inside. Two seconds later they were all blinded by light. Kakshi winced but made sure to take a defensive stance just in case it was a trick.
“Kakashi-sensei?” Someone asked.
Frowning Kakashi looked at the others. He blinked. It was Sai. The one who went to turn on the light returned, it was also Sai.
So then who…
Kakashi’s eye widened as he saw that the person who had burst out of the room was none other than Sasuke. A really angry looking Sasuke. Kakashi sighed. Well shit. This wasn’t how he had wanted to reunite with his long lost pupil. Sasuke said nothing but made his way around Sai and returned inside.
“Come in Kakashi-sensei.” Sai smiled and gestured for Kakshi to come inside.
Shaking his head at his own royal fuck up, Kakashi made his way inside. At first he didn’t see Sasuke anywhere and wondered if he had just gone to bed. But then he heard some noise coming from somewhere towards what he assumed was the apartments entrance. He made his way past the living room sofas and made his way into to the connected dining room. He could see that Sasuke had apparently went to the kitchen that was also attached to the open living and dining room. It was only separated by a counter and television. Before he could go and see what was going on for himself, Sai directed him towards corner chair at the dining room table. He took the offered seat.
Just as he was about to apologize, Sai’s clone dispersed and he had the ink return to its container. Still smiling Sai sat down at the table opposite of Kakashi.
“Sai.” Sasuke called.
Kakshi tensed hearing Sasuke’s voice. Sighing, Sai got up and headed towards Sasuke. Three seconds later Sai returned with two steaming cups of something. Right behind him was Sasuke who was only holding a steaming cup of something. He took a seat on the same side as Sai had been sitting but left a seat between them. Smiling, Sai placed a cup in front of Kakashi before he sat down. Just as Kakashi brought the cup up to his lips to blow on Sasukes spoke.
“It’s only instant.” Sasuke said just before taking a sip.
Kakashi paused momentarily. He had not expected to be acknowledged so quickly. He quickly looked at Sai and found him grinning at him. Well that was two for two. Since when the hell did Sai know how to grin?
What in the world is going on?
“Ah. That’s alright. Thank you.” Kakashi said cheerfully.
All three men drank their tea in silence. Kakashi had a feeling he was going to be the one who would have to break the silence.
Sasuke was the first to finish his tea. He stood up and went back into the kitchen where Kakashi heard water running—probably rinsing his cup. Both Sai and he finished at the same time moments later. Sai gathered Kakashi and his own cup. Just as he was getting up they were taken from his hands by Sasuke and then running water could be heard again. Kakashi supposed Sasuke was still as neat as when he was a kid.
Sai finally broke the silence when Sasuke sat back down.
“So Kakashi-sensei what brings you here?” Sai smiled and glanced at the clock on the wall. “This late.”
Cheeky punk.
“Ah right. Well first off I’d like to apologize for attacking you.” Kakashi said sheepishly.
“That’s alright.” Sai smiled. “You thought I was an intruder right?”
“Yes there is that.” Kakashi nodded.
“Hmm. Perhaps you just got back from your mission?” Sai asked while side peering at Sasuke.
Kakashi frowned at that. Did Sasuke not know he was out of Konoha? Judging by Sasuke’s sudden twitch Kakashi had a bad feeling that was the case.
“Yes. I just returned a while ago. Luckily Tsunade-same had not gone home yet so I was able to turn my report in.” He glanced at Sasuke, who had apparently been staring at him. “Then I heard the news.”
Sasuke said nothing. Sai smiled.
“Right. So I take it you wanted to see how this sour puss was doing and then saw what looked like an attack. Hell of night no?” Sai chuckled.
Kakashi blinked. Yeah that pretty much summed it up. Including Sasuke’s odd domestic welcome it sure had been one hell of a night.
“Yeah no kidding. I heard something from the Hokage that Sasuke was reassigned a new anbu. I’m assuming it’s you then?” Kakashi asked Sai.
Kakashi caught Sasuke momentarily tense out of the corner of his eye. Sai’s merriment also seemed to dim a bit.
Bad question, huh?
“Ah yes. I’ve been assigned with Sasuke and since he likes me so much I’m temporarily staying with him.”
Oh if looks could kill, Kakashi was sure Sai would be withering on the floor under Sasuke’s glare. If Kakashi didn’t know any better he would say the Sai was the dry sarcastic version of Sasuke. Which might explain some of the subtle differences in Sasuke that he was seeing. At least from what he could remember about him. Deciding it might be best not to overstay his welcome Kakashi decided to head out.
“Right well I heard that you might be tired from a long day so—”
“Heard from who?” Sasuke interrupted.
And he speaks again!
“Tsunade-sama. She told me you were probably already asleep when I mentioned coming to see you.” Kakashi frowned. “But after hearing about Iguru I wanted to just come and check up on you.”
“Well you would be the first.” He mumbled but Kakashi heard him nonetheless.
Sasuke frowned and stood up from his chair. Kakashi stood and watched him head back towards the room he had burst out from earlier. Sasuke paused at his door and without turning around he spoke.
“Tomorrow Sai and I have to be at the orphanage again from noon to evening. But we’re not doing tomorrow morning.” He paused for a moment. “Might even sleep in since we don’t really have anything else to do. Night.”
Sasuke went inside and quietly shut the door. Kakashi stared at the door Sasuke had just disappeared behind.
“Believe it or not, he’s changed a little since he came back.” Sai said softly.
Kakashi looked away from the door to look at Sai, who was still looking at the door.
“Counting right now, he’s been here ten days.” Sai looked away from the door to stare at Kakashi. “Naruto has also been gone ten days.”
“Right. And no one. Not even Sakura has come to see him.” Kakashi said quietly.
“Well yes. But that is not Sakura-chan’s fault.”
Sai gestured for Kakshi to retake his seat. Nodding, Kakashi sat back down.
“Well then why hasn’t she come to see him?” Kakashi looked at the door again. “Even though he doesn’t bluntly say it—it’s bothering him.”
“Well you see the clone you saw earlier was just returning from meeting with her. These past late nights Sakura and I have been meeting up so I can inform her about Sasuke. And the reason she hasn’t visited him is because I told her he seems very tired. I assumed it might be best for him to rest. However perhaps it might have been better to let Sakura drop by after all. As for the others I have a feeling Sakura may have told them that he might not want any visitors at the moment. Especially since not many know about Sasuke going to the orphanage.”
Kakashi thought about everything Sai was telling him. It had already been more than a week since Sasuke had come back but no one had come to see him. Judging by what Sasuke had said and how he had said it, it bothered him. How much, Kakashi was not sure.
“So what are you and Sasuke doing at the orphanage? Tsunade had mentioned him doing something. I just wasn’t sure what it could be since he’s on probation.”
“Ah. Well things have kind of changed at the orphanage recently. However when we started, Sasuke and I were teaching lessons at the orphanage.”
Sai chuckled at Kakashi’s half surprised expression.
“Lessons?”
“Yes. I am teaching art and Sasuke was teaching archery. However one of the caretakers was dismissed two days ago for blinding one of the orphans.” Sai sneered. “She was upset because Sora-kun had run into the kitchen. So she swatted at him with a towel so hard she damaged his left eye. Even though he was taken to the hospital for help, he can’t see out of it now.”
Kakahi’s eye widened.
“I had to actually hold Sasuke back from attacking her.”
Sai nodded and continued at Kakashi’s further stunned expression.
“The orphans are quite taken by him and he seems to be getting a little attached to them day by day. He already had to deal with Keiri-sans sense of authority when she was getting after Sora-kun and Hana-chan for not having picked up their mess—just a doll and a sword, mind you. Aside for the ever attached Hana-chan, Sasuke and I witnessed Sora-kun’s injury. He scared the hell out of the woman that day. So much so that she didn’t argue against her dismissal.”
Sai shook his head remembering Sasuke’s fury. After Urushi had spoken to both Keiri and Sasuke about the incident, separately that is, Sasuke had actually asked to be relieved early that day. Urushi had not even asked why but had agreed as long as they came in early the next day. Seeing how pent up Sasuke was from the events that day Sai had taken them to the Third training ground. There sparing had lasted way into the late night that Sai had been unable to meet Sakura. Sai was just losing his soreness from the fight with Sasuke that night.
“You said that Sasuke was teaching archery? Is he not allowed to anymore for trying to attack that woman?” Kakashi asked, interrupting Sai from his thoughts.
Sai shook his head.
“No. The next morning Urushi told us after having spoken with the retired leading caretaker, who’s still there, they would like for Sasuke to become a caretaker.” Sai smiled.
Kakashi was stunned. He would have never imagined Sasuke ever helping out in an orphanage, let alone being one of its caretakers.
“You should have seen Sasuke’s shocked face it was so funny. They told him they would like him to become a caretaker since in the short amount of time that we’ve been there the orphans have improved. After being with Sasuke all the time and seeing how he is with them, I’m not surprised. However since Sasuke is still under probation, he cannot be a full caretaker so he’s just becoming a voluntary one.”
“Which means what exactly?” Kakashi asked, confused.
“Well he will do a majority of what Keiri-san was already doing except for sleeping at the orphanage. We have to be there earlier than before so were in time for him to wake the orphans. Helping them with other lessons that Ursuhi or Kanpu-san, the retired leading caretaker, don’t have time for. Helping get them ready for bed. Ah, and get this—Sasuke’s being taught how to cook so he can do that as well.” Sai chuckled.
Well that kind of explains the domestic greeting.
To say Kakashi was stunned by what Sai was telling him would be a huge understatement. He would never have imagined this in Sasuke’s future.
“That’s just…” Kakashi trailed off, not knowing what to say.
“I know. It’s crazy. But tomorrow Urushi’s giving him a break since the past two days were pretty hectic I guess. Were you going to come later to see him then?” Sai asked.
Judging by what Sai had told him it did sound like Sasuke really did need his rest. Yet he had a feeling if he didn’t come, Sasuke would believe he had also been abandoned by Kakashi. So it looked like tomorrow he would be dropping in on Sasuke. Maybe tomorrow he could even find Sakura to tag along. He told Sai as much and they both agreed for Kakashi to come around nine in the morning. After saying goodbye Kakashi finally headed home.
Groaning, he removed all his gear and without bothering with a shower, rolled under his shuriken patterned blanket. He glanced up and looked at the picture that sat on his window seal. It had been so long since Sasuke had been in Konoha. He really hoped that this would be the last time team seven was separated. He looked from Sasuke’s annoyed face to Sakura’s smiling one to Naruto’s also annoyed face. Shaking his head at the picture, he turned away and relaxed into his bed.
All we need now is for Naruto to come back.

Note: I just wanted to state that I am not a really fast writer I just happened to have already been updating this story elsewhere. So far I have written up to chapter six. So updates will probably come in a little slower now but I do plan to keep writing. I have made it my goal to actually finish this story. So please bear with me as I write this story that I pretty much left on hiatus for about seven years. But now its been revamped and hopefully improved! I hope you enjoy this crazy story as much as I have started to re-enjoy writing again! (<3 sasunaru16)
