Karin wakes.
Above her, a thousand mirrored tiles form a mosaic of a six-pointed star. She can see herself lying on red sheets in the reflection, distorted and fractured. Slowly, she rises from the bed and heads across the candle-lit room to a set of thick, ornately carved wooden doors. She opens them. Beyond is a long, grey corridor and she shivers a moment. There's a chill in the air and she is wearing little other than a short, sleeveless dress. A curtain wafts across the end of the corridor and a sudden flash of light illuminates everything, followed by the rumble of thunder. Karin moves forward, her boots echoing on the marble, and turns the corner. She pulls the window closed to shut out the storm and locks it. Something moves behind her. She turns, but there is nothing there except another empty corridor, this one lit with slashes of light from the windows running along its length. An empty doorway is at the other end, a vase with dried purple flowers sitting on an end table beyond that. "Hello?" she calls out. Lightning flashes ominously and she winces as she notices the windows rattle with the rolling thunder. A dark shape moves past the doorframe. "Hello?" she asks again and walks to the end of the corridor. A distant skittering noise draws her attention again and she follows it as the wall on her right slopes down, revealing itself to be a large, curving stone stairway and the room she'd entered as a high-vaulted foyer. Red carpet runs down the center of the stairs, stopping as it hits the black and white marble floor, and she can just barely make out a painting at the top of the stairs. She turns, able to see other rooms from here, as well as two great wooden doors, barred and locked. She reaches up and her fingers brush a key, hanging around her neck on a leather cord, and she knows instantly that it will fit the lock. "Is someone there?" she asks. The lightning flashes again. Something pounds on the door and she nearly leaps in fright. "Karin! It's me, let me in!" Sasuke's voice calls from beyond the door. He pounds on the door again. "Please, let me in!" "It's locked," she tells him. "You have the key! Please, hurry!" he calls to her. She starts to reach for the door, but hesitates. She's supposed to keep the doors closed or the storm will come in. Sasuke should know that. There's another flash of lightning and she can hear movement inside the house again. She turns, frightened, and says, "I can't!" "Karin!" Sasuke shouts, kicking the door. It shudders under the force. His voice is no longer pleading, but angry: "Let me in, Karin!" She runs upstairs and pauses before the painting. It's of a pink-haired woman with a lantern, being protected by a blond man. The door shudders violently, splinters scattering across the floor, and Sasuke howls, "KARIN!" Karin turns back to the painting. The blond man is now pointing a finger to the right and, following a line of sight from that, she spots a door. She runs to it and ducks inside, pulling it almost all the way closed. Crouching down, she peeks through. Below, the doors crash open, their hinges shattered, and Sasuke stands as a shadow in the doorway, illuminated from the back only by brief flashes of lightning. Wind gusts through the room, swirling dead leaves across the marble. Slowly, Sasuke steps over the threshold with his blade drawn. He's going to kill her. She gasps, attempting to stifle the sound with her hand. Too late. His head snaps in her direction, Sharingan-red eyes blazing. Karin pulls the door closed, turns and runs down corridor after corridor, not knowing quite where she's going, only that she needs to get away. The floor suddenly drops away in front of her and she flails her arms as she barely stops in time. It's a square hole in the floor, looking down on the intersection of two corridors. She looks up and can see small stained-glass windows near the high ceiling that spill in light. Far above them, on the ceiling itself, there is another mirrored-glass mosaic of a six-pointed star. There's a rumble of thunder. She turns and Sasuke is at the far end of the corridor behind her. Blood drips from his blade. Karin turns and leaps. Suddenly weightless, she floats upwards until she is almost touching the mosaic. It creaks and explodes outwards, the shards of glass like a billion points of light as she continues to rise through the ceiling and into the darkness. "Karin," Sasuke's voice echoes through the void. She opens her eyes and is suddenly kneeling in front of him. His hands are on her cheeks and he gives her a strange, wavering smile as he brushes a lock of her hair aside. "Please..." she whispers. His eyes shift into those awful red stars. "Forget." She wakes in her sunny hospital room, blinking back tears as she raises a hand to her eyes and wipes the moisture away. The nurse looks at her in concern. "Are you all right?" "It's nothing," Karin answers, rubbing her eyes again, "Just a stupid dream." "Then why are you crying?" the nurse presses gently. Karin huffs indignantly and wipes the last of the tears away from her still-stinging eyes. "I'm not!" The nurse sits down on the bed, smiling sadly at her. "It's okay to cry, you know. You've been through such an awful ordeal." The scar on her chest throbs and she can feel the blade of lightning sliding through her again. She clenches her hands, twisting the fabric of the blanket, and tries not to think about how he betrayed her, just like all the others. "I've been through worse," she grounds out through bared teeth. "Not like this," the nurse says, matter-of-factly. "You loved him, didn't you?" "Yes," Karin spits out, "And he used that to use me!" She clenches her fists harder. "I hate him! And I... I wish..." she hesitates, "I wish I'd never met that bastard!" A distant rumble of thunder punctuates the words, the sunshine in the room slowly fading as storm clouds begin to blow in. The nurse looks at her pityingly and stands. With even steps, she approaches the window and refills the water in the vase of Forget-Me-Nots that sits there. The silence seems to stretch on forever between the two of them and then, at last, the nurse speaks: "Where would you be without Sasuke Uchiha, Karin? If he had never existed at all, would you have ever survived the bears in Konoha's Forest of Death? Would you have ever found the strength to rise from the ruins of your village? Could you have had the will to become cunning enough to survive Orochimaru?" Karin petulantly looks away, chewing on her lip. "Would any other Uchiha have had the warm heart necessary to tame their cursed fire and spare another?" the nurse asks. Karin looks down at her hands, slowly releasing the blanket, and draws her legs up to her chest. She rests her head on her knees and resists the urge to cry. "It doesn't matter. Whatever was good in him is cold and dead." The nurse stares at her for a moment and then heads to the door, unlocking it with a key. She pauses a moment, before closing the door completely, and says, "Get some rest." Then, Karin is alone. She cries, even as the sudden summer storm begins to pelt the window with rain."It's getting more aggressive," Inoichi tells him. "She might not be able to hold out much longer."
Ibiki steeples his hands and considers a moment. Risk the girl's sanity and life in exchange for the data they're trying so hard to destroy or let the data die with the girl. "I want you to press her." "That's not a good idea," Inoichi protests. "I'm still trying to get her to trust me and if I press too hard, there's no telling what will happen in response. The genjutsu cast with the Mangekyou Sharingan doesn't behave like a normal genjutsu. It's much trickier, much more complex. If I pressure her the wrong way, it'll just make it worse." "It's a risk we're going to have to take," Ibiki says stonily. Inoichi groans in frustration, standing. "We need that intel," Ibiki reminds him and they both know why. Inoichi grunts and shrugs a shoulder. "Fine, I'll do it. But only under protest." "Protest noted."While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
