A/N: Here’s another chapter for you! Please Enjoy! *********************************************************************** There was no helping it when it came to Naruto. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter Six He wasn’t exactly sure why at this moment he was wondering around the castle looking for the crown prince. He was sure that this wasn’t what a twenty year old man was supposed to be doing; playing hide and seek. He was absolutely sure this wasn’t what a twenty two year old prince like himself was supposed to be doing. To make matters worse, he couldn’t find the damned dobe anywhere! He had searched high and low for Naruto only to come up empty handed. He couldn’t believe that he was this hard to find! Sighing, Sasuke leaned against a wall to rest a bit. All of this moving about was draining him of what little energy he had. Since his near brush with death, he grew exhausted quickly because of his injuries. Sasuke slammed his fist against the wall behind him. He hated it. He hated feeling this weak. Never in his life had he ever been like this. He had always been strong his mother had told him once. Ever since he was a baby, he had been quiet and strong. He didn’t cry easily, if at all. He hadn’t been a trouble maker as a child. That’s what his mother had told him. Usually, he’d just sit with her while she gardened, he’d follow Itachi everywhere he went, or he’d sit beside his father while he worked. He could be silent for days at a time. And the only times he ran off it would be to read a book off alone somewhere. When he grew, his silence and strength was put to use as he was trained as a soldier in the royal guard. Before too long, that’s all he did. He trained. And now to suddenly not be able to move normally, Sasuke didn’t know what to do with himself. What did he do for fun? That’s what Naruto had asked him. Letting his fist go lax, he held up his hand. He stared at his bandaged palm; only his pale fingers were able to be seen. He flexed his hand curiously. The truth was…he didn’t know what he did for fun. He had stopped having fun long ago when his training began. And this, playing hide and seek, he hadn’t played since he was very young. And yet Naruto so freely decided that right then and there he was going to play. It made Sasuke begin to think that maybe in this place, this land that was so different from his own, he could perhaps begin to have fun again… Sasuke pushed off the wall and began to limp down the hall again searching for that blasted crown prince. Suddenly a soft chuckle floated through the air and Sasuke made his way straight for it with a small smirk on his face. Naruto was like if a ninja were to wear some outrageous color like orange. It was impossible to hide for long. Hearing about soft chuckle, Sasuke quietly made his way into an unused study. Stepping into the room, he searched with a keen eye for the blonde haired prince. The couch and chairs were covered in white sheets. The desk near the end of the room had a layer of dust that had compiled over years of disuse. On its edge just a small trace of dust had been disturbed. Perhaps Naruto had brushed it when he went to hide. It was the kind of thing that people didn’t normally notice. Only those specially trained could tell. Rolling his eyes at the obviousness of it, Sasuke limped his way over to the desk and tapped on the top. “All right, dobe, found you.” Sasuke said nonchalantly as he leaned against the edge of the desk. Hearing a groan, he could see as Naruto crawled out from underneath the desk with a bright smile tugging at his lips. “Oh come on, I thought for sure you would never check this room.” Naruto said, blowing out a disappointed breath. They were on the fourth floor and nearly every room up here was unused. Naruto thought it would be the perfect place to hide. “I heard you laughing. You’re not very stealthy.” Naruto laughed, his hand coming to rub the back of his neck. “Yeah, I guess not. I was kind of excited. This is my first time playing after all.” Naruto explained sheepishly. “You’ve never played hide and seek before?” Sasuke asked, confused. He had never met anyone before that hadn’t played hide and seek at least once when they were young. For Naruto it wasn’t as if there hadn’t been children around to play with. Sasuke had seen plenty of nobles and servants alike that were around Naruto’s age. From what he saw here, it didn’t matter what class they were in society. The smile that lit up Naruto’s face fell away at his question and Sasuke instantly regretted asking it. His eyes darkened to a darker day in remembrance. “No…” He said softly, his voice cracking. Sasuke wanted to reach out to do…something to comfort him. It felt strange, this feeling that kept growing inside of him the more time he spent with Naruto, this warm comforting feeling that always began at his heart. “Why?” He asked. A sad hollow smile tugged nearly painfully at Naruto’s lips as the memories from long ago flashed across his eyes. “…Not many kids wanted to play I guess.” Naruto said not louder than a whisper. He began to walk away then suddenly not in the mood to play anymore. However, his leave was halted when Sasuke caught his arm. “Naruto, don’t lie to me,” He said firmly. “Why have you never played before?” Sasuke didn’t like it when others lied to him. It made him feel stupid that they would think he would believe some fabrication such as a lie. Sasuke was smarter than that. He could always tell when someone was lying to him. Naruto’s jaw clenched as the muscles in his arm flexed momentarily. Sasuke could feel it, the anger and resentment that pooled just below the surface, beneath that smile that was always so bright and welcoming. “I wasn’t allowed to…” Naruto said before silence befell them. Sasuke didn’t say a word, couldn’t. he didn’t know what had happened back when Naruto was young, but whatever it was it ate at Naruto on the inside and had gnawed such a hole that if it had been a battle wound, Naruto would have died long ago from blood loss. His hand slipped from Naruto’s arm and fell to his side. He wouldn’t ask questions for now. He knew that Naruto, in time, would tell him the truth just as he would with the truth reason behind his surname. It was strange, Sasuke thought, for a man that opened his entire home up to a stranger so easily that same man held so many secrets hidden within its stone walls. “Come on, dobe it’s your turn to count to ten.” Sasuke said as he brushed past Naruto and into the hall. It took a moment for Naruto to register what had transpired, but once he understood that great big smile plastered itself across his face once more and he shut his eyes shut and began to count. “One!...Two!...Seven!...Ten!” “Dobe! Don’t skip the damn numbers! Do it properly!” ~*~ Sasuke smoothed out his tattered shirt on his bed. He knew that soon he should find new apparel to wear, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Nothing else had the Uchiha crest. And now because of the tragedy that had befallen him, nothing else would ever have the Uchiha crest. He felt naked without his crest. It was a part of who he was, a part of his family’s history. He couldn’t allow it to be forgotten. It was his duty as one of the last surviving Uchihas. He still didn’t want to believe that his brother was dead. His insides got all twisted up whenever he thought about the possibility. But, there had been no news since the massacre. No one had caught a glimpse of Itachi seen that fateful night. Naturally he’d go into hiding, Sasuke told himself. Itachi wasn’t stupid. If someone went through the trouble of killing off their entire clan then they wouldn’t rest until every last one of them was dead. His hand traced over the crest on his shirt. His castle had been filled with this symbol so much so that one could get sick of seeing it everywhere. But now, only this last remnant remained. Sasuke sighed as he donned his shirt once again. He didn’t want to think about this anymore. Naruto was going to be coming soon according to what Hinata said when she changed his bandages that morning. He just had a bit of work to do before he could have some relaxation time. Sasuke was actually looking forward to it. Things seemed to liven up when the blonde was near. It beat staying in his room all day or holing himself up in the library. Suddenly, there was a single knock at his door before it flung open revealing Naruto standing there smiling. It was strange how his own lips began to upturn ever so slightly upon seeing the other. The foreign air must have affected him. “Come on, I want to show you something.” Naruto said, beckoning him over. Sasuke obediently followed the other knowing from past experience that Naruto was going to show it to him despite if he wanted to see it or not. It was just easier to humor the blonde when it came to things like this. This time they didn’t stay in the castle. Instead, Sasuke was led to the vast forest that surrounded the village. It felt strange been outside like this again after being cooped up within the castle grounds so long. It gave Sasuke a chance to see a bit of the village too as they passed through it. Somehow, seeing the shops and the peasants going about their daily lives calmed Sasuke. He supposed it was because; even here so far from his homeland the same tasks were done in the same way. Konoha looked like his own village. For a little while as he followed Naruto, he felt as though he wasn’t in a foreign land that was too hot but in his own country again. And in his gut, the vague ache he had been feeling lately disappeared. His delusion ended the moment the tree line came into view and the village faded into the background. A sigh left his lips as he looked longingly back for but a moment before pressing forward. He hadn’t realized just how much he had missed his own village. They walked for a while after that, weaving through the trees that thickly filled this forest. Sasuke began to see why this village was referred to as the village hidden in the leaves. If someone was in the forest, they wouldn’t be able to find the damn village because of all of the trees and leaves. Finally, Naruto stopped in front of a large tree. He smiled widely as his hand came up to trace the hidden leaf symbol on the trunk. Jumping up high, Naruto grabbed onto a low hanging branch and pulled himself up to sit upon it before looking down at Sasuke. “Oh, that’s right.” Naruto commented, “Can you climb trees in your condition?” He asked, snickering. Sasuke glared at him and crossed his arms. “Hn.” Laughing loudly, Naruto leaned down from the branch and held out his hand to the other to help him up. Sasuke scowled, smacking the hand away as he too managed to jump high enough and grab onto the branch. Wincing as his wounds stretched painfully, Sasuke pulled himself up to sit on the branch as Naruto began to climb upward with ease. Sasuke wanted to strangle the other. Before his injuries, he could have done the same thing just as easily. Sighing, Sasuke began to climb slowly. With each branch, his exhaustion grew until finally he reached the top that Naruto had reached ten minutes ago. Seating himself next to Naruto on the slim branch, Sasuke took a few deep breaths to calm his pounding heart. It wasn’t fair how weak he had become. “This was my favorite tree to climb when I was a kid. Whenever I didn’t want to do my lessons or I just wanted to be alone, I’d come up here.” Naruto said, relaxing. “Hn. Did anyone ever find you up here?” He asked, genuinely curious. Naruto shook his head. “Nah, no one could see me this high up. Heh, I guess that’s why I like it up here so much. You can see for miles, but no one can see you.” Naruto said, a calm smile spreading across his face. Sasuke stared at that smile. He liked these moments they shared, though he would never admit it. “I used to have something like this in my kingdom. I’d sneak up to one of the towers that weren’t used and read.” Sasuke recalled fondly. “My brother always found me though. Then again, I suppose I wasn’t hiding very well.” A small coveted smile wormed it way onto Sasuke’s face as he remembered his childhood. Naruto stared at it, relishing in the feel as it warmed his heart. “You smile a lot when you talk about him.” Naruto pointed out and instantly the smile disappeared, replaced with a scowl. “Huh?” Naruto chuckled and shook his head. “Nothing, nothing. Just talking to myself I guess.” Naruto said. They were quiet for a while after that just enjoying each other’s company. The sun began to set soon casting a bright orange across the sky. “Sasuke, why do you still wear that tattered shirt?” Naruto asked, looking off into the distance. The sun felt nice on his skin as it slowly set. It had been a long time since he had been able to simply sit and stare at the sunset. “I like the color.” Sasuke replied, lying of course. Naruto wouldn’t understand if he told him the true reason why he refused to part with this shirt. Frowning, Naruto blew out a breath. Suddenly, Sasuke jumped feeling fingers lightly trace his clan’s symbol on his back. “It’s because of this, isn’t it?” Naruto asked as he continued to trace the delicate symbol memorizing every detail. Sasuke looked away not wanting to acknowledge the warmth that spread from Naruto’s touch. “Yeah…it is.” There was a heavy silence that rested upon the two men after that as the sun continued to set in front of them. The first traces of cold blew past them and each of them knew soon it’d be time to head back. “Sasuke, do you know the history between our families?” Naruto asked out of the blue. His tone was dead serious as he stared directly at him. Sasuke furrowed his eyebrows together at the question. He hadn’t been aware there had been history between their families. Seeing the obvious confusion, Naruto took a deep breath. “Before I was born, before you were even born, your father tried to take control of my father’s kingdom by force. It went to the brink of war between our kingdoms; however, after months of failure on your father’s part King Uchiha backed down. We haven’t heard a whisper from him since. Now suddenly we hear the entire clan is massacred in the night by some unknown force.” Naruto explained. His voice was devoid of emotion. To Sasuke, that voice chilled him to the bone. “What are you saying?” He asked, not liking where this conversation was going. His muscles tensed as his training kicked in. He didn’t like this situation suddenly. “I’m saying, I need to know I can trust you Prince Uchiha son of the late Fugaku Uchiha.” Naruto said. His eyes borrowed into his own making him witness first hand how truly intimidating Naruto could be. “I have done nothing in my weeks here to warrant this. Don’t you think I would have tried something sooner if you couldn’t trust me?” Sasuke lashed out. He hadn’t done one thing that could be linked to a siege or an assassination. Why was Naruto bringing this up now of all times? Naruto laughed bitterly. “What could you do in your condition? Your body is broken and bandaged.” He said coldly. “But when you get better and that symbol is still on your back…” Naruto didn’t finish that sentence. He didn’t need to. Sasuke knew what he meant. A broken bandaged man was no threat. But, a healthy one with training and a reason…that was a very dangerous person indeed. What would he do when he was healed? Would he try to conquer this land now that he knew what his father had tried to do before his birth? Sasuke clenched his fists at his sides. No, he wouldn’t. Naruto had done too much for him. He wouldn’t turn his back on the other like that. “What my father tried to do is in the past and I plan to keep it there.” Sasuke said seriously. “Besides, it’s too hot here anyway.” He threw in a moment later, attempting to joke. The solemn atmosphere melted the instant Naruto began laughing his normal cheerful laugh again. “You’re just a cold prick, aren’t you?” He commented, laughing more. The sun had set and the moon began to rise behind them and things became as they were before the past had been brought up. Naruto and Sasuke trekked back to the castle and just before Naruto left to his own chambers, he reached into his pocket and drew out his dagger. Encrusted on the handle was the Namikaze symbol. Holding it out to Sasuke, Naruto smiled. “Here,” He said, “A broken bandaged man is no threat. So I don’t have to trust him. But, with a dagger you hold my life in your hands each time we’re together. Don’t make me regret putting my trust in my father’s enemy’s son.” He explained with that same carefree smile that always lit up his face. Sasuke shook his head thinking that this prince must have been crazy, but he took the dagger anyway. He’d make sure that he wouldn’t make Naruto regret trusting him. It was the least he could do to repay the other for saving his life. “Good night, Sasuke.” Naruto said as he walked off down the hall. Sasuke looked at the dagger in his hands before once again at the prince of this land. “Good night, Naruto.” He said. Naruto waved in the distance before disappearing completely around a corner. ************************************************************************ That’s the end of this chapter!
