Shikamaru watched as Sasuke froze, as his back arched, and he began an impossibly slow fall to the ground. He saw the shock register in Sasuke’s eyes, and then he saw nothing in them.
Hinata was at Sasuke’s side almost before he hit the ground.
“Sasuke! Sasuke-kun!” Hinata screamed his name, but could do nothing as his chakra faded.
Shikamaru finally found his voice, and remembered his radio.
“Naruto and Sakura need to get here NOW!” Neji’s radio blared in his ear. “Sasuke is down. Sasuke is…” he could not bring himself to say it… dying, maybe dead.
“Their chakra… changed… and then they were out the window. Please explain the situation.” Neji pushed himself beyond his limits in speed, trying to get to the training grounds. As he went bounding through trees, Shikamaru explained the situation, and relayed questions and answers between Hinata and Neji, before he gave up, and gave the headset to the only one with answers.
“No, Neji-sama. There is no chakra left in his body. His heart has also stopped, minutes ago.” She sounded like she was on the verge of tears.
“No chakra in his body, what about near his body?”
“The tail that flared before…” she had to stop, willing herself to be stronger, willing the lump in her throat to stay in her throat and not break from her body. “The tail is weak, less than an insect, but it is there, for now.”
Neji closed his eyes for a second, knowing that there was no real hope.
“Look at the tail closely, Hinata, is it getting weaker? Is there a slight flare?” That tail was his connection to Sakura and Naruto. If it didn’t leave him when he died, if he were still connected to them…
“It is not growing weaker, but it is not growing stronger eith…” She stopped speaking, mid-word.
“Hinata! What changed!” Neji found himself terrified of the possibility that the little flare had disappeared, and that all hope had been lost.
“Naruto…” Hinata whispered, and Neji would have laughed if the situation weren’t so dire.
Hinata had frozen. She had heard a branch snap, and had looked up to see a very naked Naruto and a very naked Sakura bound out of the trees and race through the field. Every drop of blood in Hinata was currently rushing towards her face, which had gone from red to nearly purple.
Sakura literally pushed Hinata aside as she threw herself on the ground next to Sasuke’s body. Naruto jumped to the other side. His hand traced Sasuke’s cheek, paler than usual. Sakura put her hand on his throat, pulling out the kunai. She tried to heal him, but his dead flesh did not respond – not even their bond could heal him like this. She shook her head and lay next to his body, tears holding in the corners of her eyes as she remembered that only a few hours ago they had lain like this – asleep, alive.
Shikamaru knelt next to her, intending to apologize, to try to say something that wasn’t wrong, but a feral growl made him stop. Naruto was losing control, his eyes were red and pupils slitted, his nails dug into Sasuke’s dead flesh. He growled and coiled, ready to attack. Hinata could see the red chakra rolling off him in dangerous waves, could see that he had formed seven tails already.
Shikamaru didn’t have to see the tails to know. This was what he had been so afraid of when he had learned about the jutsu – one of the things, at least. Naruto never responded well to losing someone he cared about, but losing someone he was literally bonded to, that tore at his self-control, because a piece of him died with Sasuke. So he didn’t fight, didn’t have it in him to fight Kyuubi, because Kyuubi would do anything to protect his host, and Sasuke was part of his host.
It was basic survival.
Shikamaru knew that running wouldn’t help. There would be no warning for the rest of the village if Kyuubi were to be fully released, and the only ninja who could really fight it were already in the field. One was dead. The other was locked inside while Kyuubi raged.
Too far from the field, Neji could still see the exploding cloud of red chakra and knew that Naruto was losing control – had already lost it. There was nothing that would soothe him. Sasuke was dead, and you couldn’t bring back the dead.
“Chiyo!” he suddenly screamed through the radio.
“Chiyo?” Hinata repeated, not understanding.
“Chiyo,” Sakura’s head snapped up. She grabbed Naruto’s hand, ignoring the claws that dug into her. “Naruto – Chiyo-baa-sama – she saved Gaara – you helped her save Gaara.”
Naruto did not respond to her, but he also did not move away. Sakura tried desperately to remember what Lady Chiyo had done, but she didn’t know the jutsu. Instead, she just concentrated on forcing the chakra out of her body and into Sasuke. Her chakra joined with Naruto’s and flooded Sasuke.
Neji arrived, desperately out of breath, desperately hoping that it wouldn’t kill them both. In reality, his only real hope was that it would placate Naruto, and drain the menacing chakra until they could help him in his grief. The secret of the Kisho Tensei, the reincarnation justu, had died with Lady Chiyo of the Sand. But, Neji knew that Sakura had seen it too, that Naruto had given his own life force to help save Gaara, so if there were a chance, this was it.
He arrived, desperately out of breath, desperately hoping it wouldn’t kill Sakura and Naruto, as it had killed Chiyo. He saw that they had begun, that Naruto was almost fully out of control still, but that Sakura was trying to calm him, trying to direct his chakra into Sasuke’s lifeless body. The chakra just pooled in his abdomen, underneath their hands, and along every point of contact where Sakura was clinging to Sasuke.
“It’s not working, Sakura. You have to control it, make it follow his chakra paths, or you are just going to damage his body more.”
Sakura stopped pouring chakra into Sasuke. Naruto growled at her, but she just gently lifted his hands off Sasuke’s body. She pulled Sasuke’s shirt up, exposing his stomach, and felt around, as if she were looking for broken ribs. Finally, she placed only two fingers on his flesh, and began channeling chakra. If flooding him didn’t work, she would try another approach.
Neji and Hinata were absolutely focused on her, nothing else existed, not even the feral Naruto sitting across from her. She channeled the chakra, but got no response. She moved her fingers a few millimeters to the right, and tried again, and again, and again.
Only seconds were passing, but it felt like eternity to her.
“Sakura-chan! There!” Hinata exclaimed. It was subtle, but some of the chakra was filtering down one of the paths. Sakura didn’t have to tell Naruto what to do. He grabbed her free wrist, and unleashed all of his chakra, allowing her to draw it into herself and feed it to Sasuke.
Neji and Hinata watched as the borrowed chakra stole through his body, until every chakra point was flooded with red chakra. But Sasuke did not open his eyes. Sasuke did not draw a breath. His body was filled with chakra, but not with life.
“Sakura-chan, it isn’t going to work,” whispered Hinata. “You can’t save him.”
Sakura responded by clinging harder to his lifeless body. Naruto lay down too, and wrapped himself around Sasuke. Their chakra combined and swirled within him, within all three of them. It should have killed Sakura, but Naruto’s chakra was sustaining all three of them. Slowly, the red was soothed into the bright blue that epitomized Naruto, but the red threads were much thicker, Neji noted, and there was almost nothing of Sakura’s chakra to be seen.
And so they lay, entwined, willing Sasuke to breathe, to open his eyes. They closed their eyes and remembered everything, the good and the bad, they remember everything that tied them to Sasuke, and Sasuke to them.
Hinata looked up at her cousin, helplessly. She had seen death, lost people in the battles that had raged, but this, this felt so much worse. She looked at him and studied his mask of indifference. But she could see that he was upset. His chakra was turbulent and uneven. She had never seen his chakra move so chaotically.
And then it dawned on her. She looked from Neji to Sasuke, and back again.
“The chakra isn’t moving. They got it in him, but it is just sitting there – stagnant.”
Neji’s eyes widened. He hadn’t even noticed.
“Sakura, pull Naruto’s chakra through Sasuke, and then push it back through a different path, make it circulate.”
As a med-nin, Sakura should have realized that. She berated herself briefly before placing her hand on his abdomen and Naruto’s hand on his chest. She forced the chakra up towards his heart, towards Naruto’s hand, where it flowed back into Naruto’s hand. The chakra moved around his organs, and slowly, they felt his heart beat. Once. The pushed the chakra faster. Twice.
They forgot that they needed to conserve enough chakra for themselves and pushed and pulled everything they had, not registering exactly how much they were using up.
His heart beat again. And again. And again.
Hinata watched in amazement as the hole in Sasuke’s throat closed up, and she started crying when she heard him take a ragged breath.
But he didn’t move, didn’t open his eyes. He was alive, but it seemed like it was just a technicality for now.
They drifted off to sleep with his body between them, too exhausted to move, too terrified to break contact.
“It wasn’t your fault, Shikamaru,” Neji finally spoke. Shikamaru hadn’t moved since he had tried to comfort Sakura. He was too busy running through every hateful scenario of destruction, every mistake he made, every assumption, every … well, every everything.
“It was my plan, my kunai.”
“He is not dead.”
“He’s not alive.” And Neji couldn’t exactly argue with that.
