  • Chapter Six: The End of the Tunnel

He opened the door carefully as not to disrupt or startle the inhabitants of the room. Darkly rimmed eyes peeked in and found everyone asleep in various spots in the room. Stepping into the room he softly closed the door behind him and stepped over the scrolls scattered about the floor.

Green eyes looked over to the open door, the sign above read ‘restricted’ and he smirked. Honestly, it was down right disturbing how much Tsunade tended to know. Of coarse she would feign ignorance, let them take the fall, and punish them accordingly if they were caught by anyone. The fact that he had gotten in here without anyone snapping to attention was a good sign of how exhausted everyone really was.

He looked to Sasuke passed out against the wall, then to Sai asleep in the window his head lulling off to the side, before looking over to the pink haired woman sprawled out over the desk. He sighed and quietly walked towards her and stopped beside her.

"You should go get some rest." He whispered to the medical kunoichi.

"I can stay up as long as you, you bastard." She replied slowly waking up not yet realizing who she was talking to.

"I highly doubt that Sakura." The redhead rumbled.

Sakura shot up immediately as realization snapped her to attention. It hadn’t even accrued to her that someone else had entered the room.

She blushed, "I'm so sorry I thought you were-"

"I know very well who you thought I was." Gaara interrupted her his eyes glowing with amusement.

She looked away and back at the scroll she had fallen asleep over the blush deepening. God that was embarrassing to be caught sleeping and then mistake Gaara for Sasuke. Her hands flattened out the parchment trying to distract herself from the obvious, she was down right exhausted.

"You need to rest," the redhead observed.

"I'm close I know it. I have to keep up for Naruto." She countered

The man sighed, "you won't be able to do anything if you don't get proper sleep Sakura."

She looked down ashamed, knowing he was right, and stared at the paper without seeing.

She whispered, "but I’m just so close.”

He stared down at her his eyes as impassive as always. He couldn’t make her stop, but it was better if she did. Sakura would probably figure it out anyway with no sleep, but she’d make more ground if she took a break and slept. Sakura sighed as her mind came to the same conclusion as Gaara’s line of thinking.

"You're right Gaara." She stood and stretched. "I'll get a couple hours of shut eye and I'll know what the problem is when I wake up."

She briskly walked from behind the desk kicking a sleeping Sasuke's leg in the process. Sakura smirked down at him as he peeked open his eyes at her.

    "Chk Bitch," he scoffed.

"Don't sleep on the job Sasuke-Kun." Sakura purred with a sneer.

Sai yawned and stretched as well, he would simply follow his teammates’ lead. The thought of sleeping in his bed far more appealing than in the window sill he had passed out in. Sleep was an accentual need for ninjas anyway. Stepping up behind the pink haired kunoichi Sai followed her out of the room.

"You should go get sleep to Uchiha," Gaara added.

The two regarded each other for a long moment. One the lover who had taken the place of the one who could have been the lover. They both knew it, both felt it between them everyday. Gaara knew Sasuke resented the redhead for taking his place, but what else was he to have done?

Sasuke clicked his tongue in annoyance, stood, and shoved his hands in his pockets turning to leave. Gaara stood tense, he had nothing against the dark brunette, and awaited the possible confrontation.

"Whatever I don't need this." Sasuke announced and in a poof of smoke was gone.

The redhead took a breath and relaxed, thankfully Sasuke wasn’t in the mood for a fight. Gaara turned his attention back to the forbidden scrolls spread across the desk. They were all so old and faded, he was rather surprised that some of them were even still intact. Scanning over each scroll, trying to decide where he should start, his eyes fell upon a green and gold scroll pushed into the corner of the restricted room.

Walking over he picked it up and saw the Yondaime sign on it. Gaara fiddled with it for a few minuets and realized it wasn’t going to open for him. He sighed and placed it back into the corner, then it occurred him that while it may not open for him, it quite possibly would for the blond.
“Maybe it takes a special chakra signature? Family only?” He thought out loud.

It was a reasonable explanation, it would prevent others from getting involved in family business and prevent secrets escaping. He bit his lip, thinking it over, the redhead could easily get caught. Green eyes hardened and he clenched the scroll in his hands. For Naruto he would risk getting in trouble.

With that thought in place he determinedly walked from the room and made his way towards his lover’s hospital room.

    ******************

Sam stared out his office window trying not to look at anything. It had been a week since Sarah had said she would get him in for new treatment. He sighed, was it that serious of a new thing, or was it that several people were trying it now and there was a waiting list. He wasn't so sure he could handle much more of this strange feeling like he'd forgotten something for more precious than any rare jewel.

The phone beeped on his desk and he swiveled around to press the com button.

"Yeah?" he questioned the small black box.

"It's Sarah on line one sir."

    Thank god!

"Thank you Mary," he politely answered.

    "Your welcome sir."

With that he picked up his phone and pressed for line one. He was practically vibrating with anticipation, he so badly wanted this over with.

    "So?" He asked.

"You're in, three days from now. Tomorrow you come in and fill out all the appropriate paperwork."

He nodded, then realized she couldn’t see him and blushed in embarrassment.

"Good. I seriously think I'm gonna go mad," he paused. "Again," another pause. "If this doesn't get resolved soon."

“I understand. Soon Sam, soon this will be all over.”

He sighed he sure hoped so.

    “Anything new?”

“Yeah, well kind of.” He answered.

    “Tell me about it.”

He spun around in his chair to look back out over the city and began to divulge all his anxieties of the day. Sarah answered back suggestions and they continued to talk over the phone for a half hour. As the conversation ended she informed him he should call it a day and take some time off to prepare for the big day. He had agreed and hung up the phone with a pleasant good bye.

    ******************
Gaara's eyes widened at what he read, in what appeared to be a journal entry of the fourth Hokage of Konoha. His hands trembled rattling the document. Naruto, Naruto had been a still born? It couldn’t be true, how could that be, Naruto was here right now dying. Green eyes looked up over the scroll and glanced at the sleeping man in the bed. This wasn’t making any sense.

Eyes falling back down to the document he unrolled more and read on. He had known, Minato had known that his son was going to be still born. The baby had stopped moving two weeks before the due date. They had checked for a fetal heart beat and had found nothing. Gaara frowned at this information, if that were true…

Gaara’s frown deepened as the implications started to realize themselves in his mind. The fourth Hokage, Naruto’s father, had used the demon chakra to bring back his son. That was a highly taboo jutsu bringing back some one from the dead. He looked back down and read on.

His hairless brow lifted at the change of hand writing, more fluid and articulate if just a little shaky. His expression saddened, it was Naruto’s mother explaining what they had done, leaving her son a message. When the beast had started to attack, they came up with the plan, they knew Minato wasn’t coming back. So in exchange for his life for the village, he was going to bring back his son.

The village had no idea that the child was dead, they only knew that the baby was going to harbor the beast. Naruto’s parents had conveniently left that part out. Gaara winced as the words from his mother explaining she cut the child from her body and made the necessary seals in blood for the plan on her child.

The redhead wasn’t sure if he should be impressed, or squeamish at the thought of some woman ripping her child out of her. The woman must have died bleeding out, and had written this for her son in the future, hoping that the boy understood what they had done.

When Minato had faced off with the demon he sealed the demon's life to his son. The powerful amount of chakra slammed into his son’s body would effectively push life back into the child. Naruto had been given a second chance to live until the Kyuubii and him integrated into one. Naruto’s parents had done the exact opposite of what had happened to him when the beast was sucked out.

Gaara gave a deep frown, "so that's what's really going on."

He glanced up at his lover, the demon couldn't heal Naruto anymore because they were one in the same. Naruto’s parents jutsu had a time limit, they hadn’t known how long, but they figured it was long enough for their son. Gaara couldn’t be sure, but he guessed that at the count down started when the seal was removed when Naruto had faced off with Pein.

Sakura had been right about one thing, the Jutsu by enemy nin had only been a chain reaction. Naruto was no longer here, not really, his time in this world was done and over. His heart constricted in his chest at the thought. Sakura wasn't going to like this either.

One questioned remained, how much more time was left?

    ******************

Sam found himself standing over a sand box as the sun set. His brown eyes sad as he stared down at it. Slowly he crouched down and ran his fingers through the sand and felt his chest loosen just a little bit. It was a little odd that touching the sand had such an effect, but he was thankful for it.

Why had he told the driver to stop? Why now? He'd been back to work for a year now, so why today? What was it about the sand that seemed to call to him? What was this strange effect on him that a simple touch of the sand seemed to smooth his frayed nerves.

Still crouching he took a fist full of sand into his hand and allowed it to sift through his fingers. His eyes grew sad and distant, a conversation echoed through his head, but he couldn't make it out. A voice muffled by the fog of his confused mind called out but he couldn’t make out what was said. Sam sighed irritated and stood up dusting his hand on his pants leg. It was time to go home.

Hopping back into the car the driver said nothing, used to this sort of strangeness from his employer now. The man looked back over his shoulder a smile on his face.

    "Ready to go sir?"

    "Yes"

With that they continued their drive, silence their companion as the drove. Sam was certain he would so much happier once this was all solved.
