Kakashi noted the subtle difference in Naruto's chakra.
Something was off, but he couldn't put his finger on it.
Naruto was twitching uncomfortably while Sakura glared at him.
Act. Natural!
The wedding must go on! Naruto, Ayame and Konoha will be humiliated if it doesn't! Sakura had insisted to Sasuke when he argued against the merits of this charade.
"You said it yourself. Naruto wants to marry Ayame - he just can't do it personally, today. However, if he doesn't today - it will break Ayame's heart! Who knows when she'll get over that! It'll take a whole lot of explaining to get her to accept that Naruto got cold feet!" Sakura had argued, "Besides, foreign dignitaries have come and businesses have been suspended only for Naruto's wedding. If word gets out of his conduct, not only our village, but also Naruto's reputation will be in jeopardy!"
Sasuke had a thousand reasons capable of refuting Sakura's twisted reasoning, which totally makes no sense. But what if she were right? This was his best friend's wedding and his best friend's first day of a new chapter in his life. He wouldn't want to ruin it - would he?
Ayame walked down the aisle, with tears glistening down her cheeks as her long trail of headdress followed suit.
Naruto looked at her with uncertainty.
She was indeed very beautiful with her brown hair hanging just above her waist. Her body was not as toned as a kunoichi's but her well-defined features made up for that. As she held her violet-coated bouquet of roses tightly against her chest, she regarded Naruto with every love in every fiber of her being.
So, this was what Naruto saw in Ayame. But those looks weren't for him. It was for Naruto. He felt a pang of jealously in his heart. Naruto was one lucky bastard.
"Ahem. As I have said: Speak now, or forever hold your peace. Do you, Uzumaki Naruto, son of Namikaze Minato and Uzumaki Kushina take Teuchi Ayame as your lawfully wedded wife?"
"I... I do."
"You may kiss the bride."
Naruto paled. Sakura watched, rapt with attention. Ayame blushed and looked at Naruto expectantly.
Noticing her groom's peculiar behavior, she cooed, "I...It's okay, Naruto, we've done this before, right? Ah... I'll lead, okay?" She leaned in.
Naruto stepped back. Ayame opened her eyes in time to see Naruto leaning back. Hurt flashing through her eyes, she stammered, "W... what's wrong?"
Shit. Shit. Sasuke grabbed Ayame by the shoulders and leaned in. Shit
"Unhand my wife, you impostor!"
The audience gasped, and turned to the entrance of the chapel where the real Naruto was standing.
"That's not Naruto!" Karin screeched, pointing at the Naruto beside Ayame "I knew something was up! His chakra. It's - it's - OH!" Sakura tapped her neck, knocking her out.
Ignoring Karin, Kakashi quickly held the impostor at blade's end and growled, "Who are you?!"
The henge jutsu was called off.
"SASUKE?!" Naruto's jaw dropped, "YOU HAD THE HOTS FOR AYAME?!"
"No, dobe. It's because of what happened outside the chapel," Sasuke tried to relay to Naruto what happened as subtly as possible.
"The... Our first kiss?! I didn't mean it, Sasuke. It meant nothing to me - I -"
The audience gasped again. Sakura snorted. Ayame was near fainting.
"No, Naruto, you tripped and ended up knocking yourself out. Sasuke didn't want to upset you nor Ayame so we henge'd as you until you woke up," Sakura explained.
"You'd do that for me?" Naruto's eyes watered, his face immediately uncomfortably close to Sasuke's. People really have a way of invading the sullen Uchiha's personal space - most especially today.
"Hn," was Sasuke's reply. Shrugging, he turned his back on Naruto and looked away.
"I don't get why you didn't postpone the wedding for a few minutes, dobe. Right, Ayame?" Naruto laughed, holding his shaken bride.
Sasuke glared at Sakura who just shrugged and smiled.
Ayame turned to Naruto, "You smell of wine. Have you been drinking?"
Naruto lowered his eyes, "Yes, I was. For a minute, I was scared. I have never felt this way for anyone before, nor has anyone ever felt the way you do about me. It felt different. I was scared. I didn't know if I'd be able to make you happy and give you what you needed. But now... Seeing you in the arms of my clone just felt so right - except it was in the arms of another man which was wrong - but I... I love you and I want to marry you! Umm... Do I have to propose, again? I do! So... will you?"
"Oh shut up and kiss her," Sakura said, pushing Naruto to Ayame.
Ayame grabbed Naruto's gut-stained collar and pulled him down for a kiss.
Everyone cheered and shouted for the new couple.
Sakura patted Sasuke on the back, "You did good."
He glared at Sakura, "You told me he'd be out for the whole day!"
"I did? I guess I was wrong," Sakura mused as Sasuke fumed, "- like I was about you. Welcome back, Uchiha."
Sasuke froze as Sakura enclosed him in an embrace.
Well, weddings weren't so bad, after all.
He could've sworn he saw a flash of blue dart past him and Sakura.
Must be his minds playing tricks on him.
"The main event for the reception starts in an hour. Don't be late. It's at the arena used in the Chuunin Exam," Sakura had told him before joining Lee.
Main event. Wasn't that supposed to be the wedding? Hn. Whatever.
Sasuke was never one to mingle in weddings and he wasn't gonna start now. He hd an hour to burn and could use a shuteye after all that drama. The forest it is.
Sasuke arrived at his spot to find that someone beat him to it. Sitting on a now-displaced rock was a blue-haired woman with her face buried in her hands.
"I... I thought I was over him. B... but, seeing him in t...her arms, so h...happy. Oh. Oh. Oh. It hurts me so bad. Ni-san," she had said in her quaking voice.
Was she talking about me? Isn't this a bit melodramatic? Sasuke turned to leave.
"Naruto-kun... I... I loved you before she did... Why not me? Oh. God, why do I feel this way? *sniff* I should *sniff* be happy for N...Naruto-kun b...but, Neji-san, it hurts!"
Hinata? Sasuke took a step back and cracked a branch.
"Sasuke-sama?!" Hinata turned up to face him, "W... what are you doing here? D... did they send you to find me?"
Sasuke cursed under his breath, "No, no. I was looking for some place to rest and I stumbled upon -you."
"Oh," Hinata looked a bit crestfallen, "I guess I should go *sniff* now." She stood up to leave, wiping her tears.
"No, no. D... do you want to talk about it?" Sasuke ventured. He couldn't believe he was asking this but he did.
Hinata broke down and cried. Sasuke has never comforted anyone before - but he felt like he owed it to her. Her cousin had risked his life to save him before and she was the only girl in the Academy not to annoy him.
Besides, there was something about this Hyuuga girl that he felt rather strange about. Was it because she was always alone like him? Was it because she grew up similar to him? That she felt like she always had to prove herself? He didn't know.
But she was different.
So, he stepped closer to the Hyuuga and held her shaking arms.
"Sasuke! Naruto told me he only saw me as a friend," Hinata burst, "N...nothing more. Oh. Oh. I... I don't know how to feel about him getting married!"
"Sssh. It's gonna be alright," Sasuke ventured, "Shit happens."
Hinata snorted, "You remind me so much of Neji-san. We used to sit here by the lake and talk. That's what he used to say before he- before he-"
"Let it all out," Sasuke said simply.
"Kiba and Neji said you were an asshole, you know."
He was shocked at Hinata's forwardness. Half an hour ago, she was bawling her eyes out. Now here she was, telling him he was an asshole.
"But, they're wrong," she said firmly, "Thank you, Sasuke-sama."
Hinata bowed. Sasuke smirked and said, "Don't be so formal. But you know, they're right."
Hinata shook her head, "No. What you did - for his wedding, not even I would have done that." Hinata smiled, "You're a really good person - you just think it's cooler to act all brooding and s...s...shit. Oh my, I didn't mean-"
Sasuke had to laugh. This girl had balls. She was far from the shrinking violet she was in the Academy.
Hinata turned beet-faced, "Never mind. You're... an ass."
Sasuke laughed even harder, then glanced at his watch, "Hey, we're gonna be late for the reception. Think you can make it?"
Hinata steeled her resolve, "Yes, I will. You're right. It's beyond my control, Naruto's decision. The least I can do is being happy for him."
She smiled, "I'll get my turn, one day."
Sasuke looked at her and smiled, "Yeah, you will. I'll walk you back."
"I'd like that."
